The ritual of burning old palms for the ashes on Ash Wednesday is a reminder of our ongoing journey of faith. We held our palms high on Passion Sunday, welcoming Christ, our triumphant King, to Jerusalem. We burn these same palms turning triumph to ash, symbolizing the times we fail to live as Christians. On Ash Wednesday, the dust of the ashes will be marked on our foreheads as once again we begin our communal journey to renewed faith at the Baptismal font on Easter. Baskets will be placed at the doors of the Church for collection of palms on February 23/24 and March 2/3. BIBLE STUDY: ROMANS Fr. 3 Quotes of the Week The closet of the Roman Catholic Church hinges on an impossible contradiction. For years, church leaders have driven gay congregants away in shame and insisted that homosexual tendencies are disordered. And yet, thousands of the church s priests are gay. It is not a closet, it s a cage. Gay Catholic priests speak out. New York Times, Feb. 17, Too many bishops around the world... deny the problem; they treat it as a sin, not a crime; they don t listen to the victims; they believe the priest when he says he will never do it again; they keep him in ministry; they cover up. Thomas Reese, Jesuit priest and commentator, Credibility of Catholic church at stake in sexual abuse summit. The Guardian, Feb. 18, Unless church officials can come to recognize the standpoint of privilege and power that they occupy, and how it might be distorting their understanding of priesthood, of equality, of sex and sex abuse, it is hard in the current moment to see a way out of the crisis they have created. Euphemization has enabled the hierarchy to mask the double truths... that have sustained its consecrated status for many generations of Catholics. Michele Dillon, The Catholic Church s euphemization of power. National Catholic Reporter, Feb. 15, The more a prelate is homophobic in public, the more likely he is to be gay in private. Abuser priests have overwhelmingly been protected by gay bishops who were afraid of scandal and being exposed. I set out to understand how, to quote Pope Francis, the institution has come to be built around lies, double lives and hypocrisy. This lie has had huge consequences... It allows us to understand the misogyny of the clergy, the scandals around the Vatican Bank during the time of Archbishop Marcinkus, the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI, and the revolt Pope Francis is now facing. French sociologist Frederic Martel, who spent four years interviewing more than 1,500 priests, bishops and cardinals, speaking about the revelations of his new book, In the Closet of the Vatican: Power, Homosexuality, Hypocrisy, Shame of gay Catholic clerics distorts church, says author. Agence France-Presse, Feb. 16, We need wide-ranging structural reform. We need checks and balances rather than the feudal governance we have now in which each bishop is the undisputed master of his diocesan fief. Catholic patience is (finally) running out... While bishop leaders will hear from survivors at the Vatican summit, the gathering suffers from its unrelieved homogeneity. No lay person, survivor or woman will have decision-making voice. Once again, we are asked to believe that the clerical system is capable of governing itself. For most Catholics, that ship has sailed. St. Joseph Sr. Christine Schenk, How long, O Lord, must we wait to reform the clerical system? National Catholic Reporter, Feb. 15, Sexual abuse of nuns by clergy has long been a problem in Poland - and it s a very painful matter... This isn t the first time the issue has been raised, and we don t know if it will change much, but it should show some people at least that the time for concealing this problem is over... The cases I dealt with were reported to the superiors of the priests and monks concerned. But I don t know what the results were, and the cases were never made public. Ursuline Sister Jolanta Olech, secretary-general of the Warsaw-based Conference of Higher Superiors of Female Religious Orders, speaking to Poland s Catholic Information Agency, KAI, who also added that one young nun had been forced to leave her order after becoming pregnant, while the priest who fathered her child had remained in his post without any serious consequences. Catholic News Service, Feb. 15, Perhaps this summit can t deliver everything, but from the point of view of public perceptions of Francis and the Church, it had damn well better deliver something. John J. Allen, Jr., Cruxnow.com, Feb. 18, 2019 If we haven t found [ other McCarricks ] yet, it means that we don t know where they are. Archbishop Charles Scicluna of Malta, Church s leading reformer on sex abuse warns of more McCarricks. Cruxnow.com, Feb. 18, It is clear the sexual abuse of women, children and vulnerable adults has been normalized in Catholic clerical culture. Abuse is exercised at every level of ministry, from parish priest to the most senior clerics. Perpetrators are protected and victims silenced. This is aided by a culture of clerical entitlement and opportunity. The Catholic Church is headed for another sex abuse scandal as #NunsToo speak up. The Conversation, Feb. 14, 2019.

4 Quotes of the Week (continued) The product of this stubbornness is a secretive, male culture at the top of Catholicism where large numbers of priests routinely break their vows of celibacy. It is an appalling moral failure and needs to end now, but that will involve rethinking an entire approach to sexuality in Catholicism that is peculiar, punitive and often plain perverse. The Jesus of the gospels had almost no interest in such matters. Why does the Church leadership? It is a question that would take more than four days to answer, were it even to make it on to the agenda in Rome this week. Instead, expect more make-do-and-mend, fine words, dramatic gestures, and then crossing of fingers and hoping it will all go away. It won t. And faithful but despairing Catholics will continue quietly to depart the pews. Peter Stanford, The Catholic church is still making excuses for pedophilia. The Guardian, Feb. 17, There are some missing names on this list that have me wondering. I think some people are still being protected. Domincan Sister Sally Butler, More Than 100 Priests Accused of Sex Abuse Are Named by Brooklyn Catholic Diocese. New York Times, Feb. 15, The Catholic Church is trying to deceptively convince the public that they ve fixed the problem when they are the problem. Attorney Mitchell Garabedian, Abuse victim advocates call Catholic Church defrocking of McCarrick damage control. Boston Herald, Feb. 16, The bishops in this country have lost credibility. Cardinal Joseph Tobin, Archdiocese of Newark, NJ, North Jersey Record, Feb. 15, 2019 The Catholic diocese of Waterford and Lismore [Ireland] has said it did not have enough money to pay its priests wages at Christmas due to a major falloff in the amount of donations collected from parishioners. Administrators already had to borrow from diocesan funds to pay the 60 or more priests last September and had to raise money from parish reserves again in December for the last quarterly salary payment. Now they are waiting for collection returns to see if there will be enough for the next due payment in March or if diocesan funds will have to be used again. Irish Examiner, Feb. 18, 2019 CELL PHONE COLLECTION March 2/3. If you have an old cell phone you are not using, we will collect them for the local Domestic Violence Resource Center. They will be reprogramed for 9ll calls. There will be a collection box in the parish hall after all masses. Social Action Committee ANIMAL SHELTER COLLECTION Thank you to all parishioners who thoughtfully contributed items to the Animal Shelter Drive. The Animal Shelter and we really appreciate your support! Grace Clark, Alex Crowshaw and Margaret Keegan Confirmation Students CATHOLIC SCHOOL TUITION AID Our parish policy is to allocate catholic school tuition assistance to parishioners using a needs-based formula. Aid is considered for students in grades K-12. This year we will again utilize the services of FACTS which is the same process used by the schools in the diocese and most other parishes to allocate their financial aid. We hope by utilizing FACTS we can more efficiently and effectively assist our parishioners in obtaining the appropriate level of aid. Families need to only fill out one FACTS application per family for all children and all schools. When completing the application select Christ the King Rectory Kingston as recipient of the information. The application can be found at and must have a COMPLETED status by March 31. DIOCESAN FAITH FORMATION CONVOCATION Saturday, March 16: Bryant University, Smithfield All adults are invited to be refreshed in your faith, enjoy fellowship with other Catholics, and be equipped to discuss your Catholic Faith with others. 5 MUSTARD SEED MAILING Thursday, February 28, 9 a.m. in the parish hall. STEPHEN MINISTRY MESSAGE The death of someone you love is bad enough. It creates an absence in your life, and your awareness of it rises and falls; its peaks and troughs are as unpredictable and as dangerous as the waves of the sea (Andrew Taylor) Even after years, the loss can seem new and heavy; a burden that needs to be shared. It can seem weak to your family and friends that you haven t recovered after so long. A Stephen Minister is someone in whom you can confide and talk openly about your loss. Call Larry Bartley at ( LJBJR@cox.net) or Carol Hartley at ( CTK_StephenMinistry@verizon.net) or call the office at FRIENDLY VISITOR MESSAGE Has recent wintry weather has made it more difficult for you to get out? Re you feeling in need of some friendly conversation? When you are home and unable to get around as you would like, there is help as close as your phone. A Friendly Visitor will come for a visit on a schedule that works for both of you. Call the office at or Bonnie Feeney at and talk to her about having a Friendly Visitor. A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT In today s Gospel reading Jesus urges his listeners to Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. He also offers several examples of putting mercy into action. Listeners can then reason their way into how to put the values of the Gospel reflected in these imperatives into practice in other situations. Good stewards look for opportunities to exercise God s mercy toward others. They realize that, in doing so, their own experience of God s mercy not only becomes more profound, but affirms their hope of seeing the Lord face-to-face one day. How have we experienced God s mercy in our lives? How might our thinking, attitudes, words and actions reflect God s mercy on someone else today? WORLDWIDE MARRIAGE ENCOUNTER Therefore, my beloved brothers and sisters, be firm, steadfast, always fully devoted to the work of the Lord. Be firm, steadfast and devoted to your marriage by attending a Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekend. The next Weekends are March 8-10, in Duxbury, MA and April 13-14, in Brewster, MA. For more information, call Stephen & Michelle O Leary at or visit them at LENTEN MORNING OF REFLECTION March 9: 9 a.m. 12 p.m. Christ the King Parish Hall The Parable of the Prodigal Son: An Invitation The parable of the Prodigal Son from the gospel according to Luke is very familiar to us all. It is most often used with reference to forgiveness and reconciliation. However, there is more to the parable than that theme. In this morning of reflection, we will focus on the parable of the Prodigal Son as an invitation to look with new eyes at God, at Jesus and at ourselves. In the process of looking we may appreciate new aspects of the parable and Jesus purpose in presenting it, namely to invite us to a deeper relationship with God and with one another. The morning will include presentations, personal reflection time and the opportunity for participants to share from their reflections. Please call the office, to reserve your place. Presenter: Rev. Richard M. Friedrichs is the pastor emeritus of St. Catherine s Parish in Warwick, RI. In addition to the parish ministry experience, his 48 years of ordained ministry has included spiritual direction ministry and the training of spiritual directors; prison ministry; spiritual director at the American College in Louvain (Leuven) Belgium and retreat ministry.
