INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK Jesus proclaims today the Gospel of God: This is the time of fulfillment. The Kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the Gospel. Jesus challenges us to accept a change of heart, to start believing and thinking differently. The Gospel asks us to take the focus off ourselves and away from self-concern, and place it on our brothers and sisters, especially those most broken and in need, and on our environment. We are called to be stewards of all God has created. This means that we are also called to work on God s behalf ensuring that all that God created and all who God created is cared for and protected.

3 In preparation for the 150th anniversary of the Diocese of Providence in 2022, Bishop Tobin has introduced a new four-year, diocesan-wide capital campaign called Grateful for God s Providence. The goal of this campaign is to raise $50 million, which will be used for various purposes to help strengthen the Catholic Church in Rhode Island: - $8 million will be added to the existing endowment to support seminarians preparing to serve the church as priests; - $8 million will be added to the existing endowment that provides for the needs of retired priests; - $5 million will be added to the Anchor of Hope Endowment Fund, which provides tuition assistance for students attending Catholic schools; - $5 million will support the charitable agencies and social service ministries of the diocese; - $4 million will be earmarked for the endowment fund of the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul in Providence (this will include the replacement of the roof, which is the original roof); - $20 million will remain in parishes for their own local needs. The campaign has begun to roll out in parishes throughout Rhode Island. It is scheduled to launch here at Christ the King at the end of this summer and into fall. Our parish goal is $1,038,000. The path to that goal is built on the premise that each family would take the amount they give each year to the regular parish offertory collection, and pledge that amount to the campaign over a four-year period. This means that if I give $1,500 to the parish in the course of a year (which is the average amount of a contributing family in our parish), then I would consider a $1,500 pledge to the campaign a commitment of $31 a month, spread over four years. Of every dollar that is raised, 40% will remain here at Christ the King and be designated for particular needs and purposes that will sustain the mission, ministry, and future of our parish. In addition to a building and maintenance fund, the parish may also decide to create endowments to serve various needs. In the coming months, members of the parish finance council, pastoral council, stewardship council, and buildings and grounds team will consult with parishioners to determine the specific uses for the parish s share. The Grateful for God s Providence campaign will be introduced here in the coming months. I look forward to working with professional stewardship, development, and campaign consultants from Guidance in Giving, a very successful Catholic development firm that has been at it for 35 years. They have been charged with the oversight of the campaign, which will serve as an opportunity for our diocese and our parish to prioritize our needs, plan for our future, and give thanks to God for all that the Holy Spirit accomplishes through our unity, generosity, and our love of Jesus. There s never a good time to conduct a capital campaign; the conditions will never be perfect. But it s been decades since the last diocesan (or parish) capital campaign, the needs are valid, and there are great things that we can accomplish together as Roman Catholics preparing to celebrate 150 years of Christian service, worship, and community. I ask that you keep this in your mind as you plan your charitable budget for the year, and in light of the fact that we are also beginning this year s annual Catholic Charity Appeal. Most of you have already received your invitation to participate in the annual appeal, along with hundreds of thousands of Catholics in Rhode Island. The annual appeal is the main source of funding for our church s social services and ministries to the poor. Please use the pledge cards and return envelopes in this mailing as your 2018 response. They can either be mailed back in the return envelopes provided, or dropped in the collection basket at any Mass. In the past, the parish has sent its own mailing, but this year, we will not double the effort, so that the extra cost printing and postage can go directly to people in need. Thanks to everyone for your witness, your example, and the many ways in which you respond to God s goodness and providence! QUOTE OF THE WEEK What has struck me... is being more and more aware of how women have been given a lot of reason to abandon the church the sort of disrespect, and even more than disrespect. If you look at the Gospels, Jesus doesn t really get on people for overtly oppressing the poor. What he does get on them for is not seeing them. And I think it s true with women, who often, in particular outside of North America, form the real poor. The first sin is to not see them and to go on your merry way. Or if you see them, to cross to the other side of the road. Cardinal Joseph Tobin, Archbishop of Newark, N.J., in an interview from the current issue of America Magazine (January 22, 2018).

4 OPEN PARISH COUNCIL MEETING Sunday, January 21 at 10:15 a.m. in Swan Hall. (Swan Hall is the large building on Upper College Road where many of our Religious Formation classes are held.) Members of the Council will be present to answer questions and listen to concerns or suggestions you may have about our parish. Limited Special Needs parking is available. It is best to park at CTK and walk the one block to Swan. BLOOD DRIVE The Rhode Island Blood Center is asking for a little extra help now that the real winter weather has finally hit Rhode Island! Simply put, these below freezing temps and snowstorms impact many donor s ability to get to drives and centers and result in blood drive cancellations. More than 200 units of blood are needed by patients every single day, no matter what the weather. All presenting donors during the month of January will receive a $5 Dunkin Donuts gift card. So, bundle up! It may be cold outside, but a nice hot Dunkin' & helping someone else, will warm you from the inside out! DONATION STATEMENTS CTK budget envelope users will receive a tax statement from Cathedral Corporation, our envelope company. They will be mailed by January 31. If you are an online giver through Our Sunday Visitor, you will need to print out your statement from your account. Log in and click View history and tax information, click print on far right and change the dates. Under report type, choose Full detail report and print. If you have any questions, please call Beth in the office, STEPHEN MINISTRY MESSAGE She smiles, she laughs, she hurts, she cries. She holds it all deep inside. These are the opening lines of a poem, author unknown. Keeping emotions inside can be harmful to you, creating new problems emotionally. Someone to listen while you get out your feelings is important. A Stephen Minister would like to be that listening ear. Contact call Larry Bartley at LJBJR@cox.net). Carol Hartley at ( CTK_StephenMinistry@verizon.net) or call the office, VETERANS CORNER The CTK Veterans Committee will be conducting a voluntary survey of veteran parishioners at all masses on the weekends of January 27/28 and February 3/4. Committee members will be in the narthex to collect name, rank, branch of service, dates served, and phone number (optional). This information will be used to create a parish veterans database, and to keep interested veterans informed of pertinent veteran issues and committee activities. If you have served in the military for any period of time, stop by to be recognized for your service and included in our database. CELL PHONE COLLECTION The Social Action Committee is collecting your no longer needed cell phones, which will be erased and reprogrammed to dial 911. The phones will then be distributed to the Domestic Violence Resource Center clients for emergency use. There will be a box in the parish hall until January 21 for your donations. Thank you! COAT DRIVE Sponsored by the Social Action Committee January 27/28 We need new or clean, gently used coats for men, women and children. There is special need this year for warm outwear, hats, snow boots, mittens and gloves for young adults, teens and children. Items will be collected in the Parish Hall before or after all Masses. All sizes, colors and styles accepted! Items will be donated to area schools and Crossroads Rhode Island for families in need or people living in shelters. Please contact Michelle Fonseca at or adfmrf@verizon.net with questions. PLATES/PLATTERS The busy reception/holiday season is behind us; there are many dishes remaining in the kitchen. If you have brought something in lately, please check for your missing items. Anything left after January 21 will be donated. Thank you. MISSION TRIP The Mission Committee has begun planning a mission trip to Orland, Maine, for the week of July 1, working with the HOME organization there, assisting low-income people with housing, employment, and a soup kitchen. There are a maximum of 24 spots available for this trip. If you are interested in going, please Mike Marran at mmarran@cox.net.

This year we will again utilize the services of FACTS which is the same process used by the schools in the diocese and most other parishes to allocate their financial aid. Families need to only fill out one FACTS application per family for all children and all schools. When completing the application select Christ the King Rectory Kingston as recipient of the information. The application can be found at Deadline is April 1 to be considered for aid. The 2018 Lumen Gentium Awards: Nominate someone you know today. Many individuals and groups throughout the Diocese of Providence work tirelessly in support of the work of the Church in their parishes. Often, they do so without compensation or acclaim, yet because of their devotion to the Church, they 'toil in the vineyard' in service to the Lord and those in greatest need. To formally recognize these dedicated individuals and groups, Bishop Tobin established the Lumen Gentium Awards in to be presented in 10 specific categories in recognition of those who have demonstrated outstanding service to the church in their parish, the Diocese of Providence and/or the local community-at-large. A committee, under the leadership of the Vicar General/Moderator of the Curia, was established to solicit nominees from across the Diocese. All nominees are reviewed by the committee and final recommendations submitted to Bishop Tobin for approval. The recipients of the 2018 Lumen Gentium Award will be honored at an Awards Dinner scheduled for Wednesday, May 16 at the Twin River Event Center in Lincoln. Proceeds from the Lumen Gentium 2018 Dinner will be distributed to Diocesan Hispanic Ministries. If you have nominated someone in the past and they have not won, please do not be discouraged and consider re-nominating them. Over the years we have received hundreds of excellent nominations and this year could be their year. We are so very blessed to have so many dedicated and faithful people working for our Church.
