The RCIA is a process through which interested adults and young adults are introduced to the Catholic faith and way of life. It is a journey of instruction, reflection, and prayer. The RCIA process is for: Those who have been baptized in another denomination and wish to join the Catholic faith Those who have not been baptized and wish to join the Catholic faith Baptized Catholics who have not yet received First Communion or Confirmation who wish to return to the full practice of their Catholic faith What Can You Do? As Catholic Christians, we are called to be disciples, living and sharing our faith, and spreading the Good News of Jesus Christ in our world. If you know of someone who may be interested, invite him or her to contact us! If you have any questions or would like to register please do not hesitate to contact us: Fr. Joe Upton at URI (college students) or Mrs. Jennifer Marran at Christ the King Parish at (all other adults).
3 On behalf of all the parents of the parish, I extend a warm welcome back to our catechists, as most of them return to the classroom this Sunday morning to kick off a new year of religious formation. It s encouraging for all of us to know and to see that the Holy Spirit still inspires these folks to hand down the great treasure of our Christian faith. Two thousand years after the Great Commission: Go and teach, evangelization remains the church s most important ministry. This year, the parish will see some changes within the Youth Ministry and Religious Formation program. First, we are saying goodbye to Brenda Tougas, who is leaving the parish staff after 19 years as an Administrative Assistant. Beginning this week, Brenda is working at Msgr. Clarke School as the receptionist. On behalf of the parish family, including all the children, parents, catechists, and staff whom she has served so faithfully, I extend to Brenda my sincere gratitude and best wishes as she remains part of the church s mission in a new ministry. Georgann Lardaro remains the Director of Religious Formation, and Eva Mancuso remains the Youth Minister and Director of Grade 8 Confirmation Preparation. Each of them is working on a new program for seventh and eighth graders. Seventh grade students, under Georgann s direction, will leave the classroom setting for a new model that is centered on Christian service. The inspiration for a service year comes from the advice we heard at last week s Masses from Saint James: Be doers of the word and not hearers only. The seventh graders will become doers of the word, working together on different projects that will help them to practice the Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy, rather than merely read about them and memorize them. I look forward to hearing about their new adventures in faith, and I thank Georgann for her passion and enthusiasm as she pilots the new program. This will be Eva Mancuso s second year leading the eighth-grade Confirmation program. This year, the program will extend beyond the Confirmation ceremony itself. Students will receive their Confirmation in March of 2019, at which time the program turns into a spring board that launches them further into youth ministry and the life of the church. This practice will be a better expression of our belief that Confirmation is not a graduation ceremony. Finally, I m happy to be rolling out an all-new sixth grade program that is centered around the sacrament of the Eucharist and the celebration of Mass in the community. The program calls for students to attend Mass throughout the year, and attend three extended class sessions in the church hall (one in November, one in February, and one in May). Designed as a field education program, students will be leaving their textbooks behind and engage in the most important experience in the life of a Catholic Christian: the praise and worship of God in the Eucharist and in the Word, among the members of the community of faith. The new program for grades 6, 7, and 8 is part of a vision that sees young people actively engaged in the life of the church, rather than passively reading a book in a classroom. It reflects the value we place on young people and the role that God calls them to take on within the church not in 10 or 20 years, but here and now! As these new programs unfold, we look forward to hearing feedback from parents. In the meantime: thank you to our parents the first and best teachers of their children in the ways of faith for their support and cooperation. May the Lord bless these seeds that we plant together in His name. GRATEFUL FOR GOD S PROVIDENCE Please Respond Today! We have already seen many households show their interest and support for the goals and plans of Christ the King by indicating their intent to join us at a campaign reception. Please join us for one of the following dates: Thursday September 13 at 12 or 7 p.m. or Monday September 17 at 7:00 p.m. or Wednesday September 19 at 7:00 p.m. * All receptions will be hosted in the Parish Hall. 5 MAKE A DIFFERENCE We are now in our sixteenth year and most of the supplies for making the sewn quilts were donated by Bea Parker, the senior citizen who started this program. Those supplies have all been used. Other materials have been donated by parishioners, and we have purchased the needed batting from monies received from Christ the King. At this time we are requesting donations of material. We need pieces one yard wide and appropriate for children. No fleece at this time. ALPHA RETURNS TO CTK Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. beginning September 11! For more information or to register, alphacommittee.ctk@gmail.com, call Laureen at , or visit us at More about Alpha from one of our 2017 guests: Beth s Alpha Experience Sometimes things happen just at the right time! That was the case for me. I had been inactive from Christ the King for a little over a year and I knew in my heart I wanted to return and continue on my spiritual journey, yet I did not feel connected. This was an unusual position for me to be in as I am very active with other groups, both as a participant as well as a leader. An acquaintance of mine suggested ALPHA and the next thing I knew I was attending the first meeting. It felt just right and that night I decided to continue on with the program for the next 10 weeks. I remained open to receiving whatever came my way. The Tuesday night gatherings were well organized from the dinners, the videos and the small breakout sessions. I had the opportunity to meet new folks. I found the videos to be very thought provoking. The small group discussions were facilitated with ease and comfort; one could sit back and listen to the conversation as well as choose to be an active contributor sharing thoughts etc. Truly there was no right or wrong answer. One s point of view could be shared without judgment. It was very self- reflective and gave food for thought over the coming week. I looked forward to each week and made it my personal quest to meet new people and to trust that my relationship with Jesus would continue to be strengthened as a result of my involvement. Indeed it has. I will return as a team member of Alpha this year and I have signed on to be a greeter at weekend Masses. Being involved in some capacity is allowing me to build a community of new friends in my faith. -Beth LeConte VOICE OF THE FAITHFUL With a theme promoting Progress & Promise, Voice of the Faithful s Conference will be October 6 in Providence. Register for the conference at votf.org and have the opportunity to learn from three dynamic speakers: Marie Collins, a forceful voice for clergy abuse survivors, a lay member of Pope Francis initial Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors, and counselor to bishops conferences worldwide on best practices for protecting children from abuse; Prof. Massimo Faggioli, Ph.D., a professor of theology and religious studies at Villanova, an internationally known theologian, expert on Vatican II and Pope Francis leadership, prolific writer and sought-after speaker. He will address us on Vatican II s legacy for the laity, offering his view on what it means to be a lay person in today s Church; and Fr. William Clark, S.J., S.T.D., who will talk about lay leadership in our Church. Fr. Clark specializes in systematic theology, particularly ecclesiology. His work is about grounding lay leadership in a theology of the people, according to the teachings of Vatican II.
