3 May the Lord look with favor on the ancient practice of our Church and the new practice of our parish, and allow the dawn to break for all of the people for whom we light our candles and say our prayers. Amen! Let there be light! Those words call to mind the vision of our Creator who, in the beginning, created the light to break through the formless, cold, dark void. They bring to life the story of Easter morning, when the light of resurrection dawned upon the world, conquering the darkness of sin and death once and for all. When we hear those words, we recall the identity that Jesus gave himself I am the light of the world (John 8:12) and the identity that Jesus has given to us: You are the light of the world (Matthew 5:14). For thousands of years, people of faith have integrated the light of candles into worship. In every Catholic church, a candle burns near the tabernacle where the Eucharist is reserved, signifying that the body, blood, soul, and divinity of Jesus is truly present. There are two candles that burn next to the altar during every Mass: one symbolizes the presence and glory of Christ s humanity; the other symbolizes the presence and glory of his divinity. At baptism, parents are handed a lit candle as they pray that their children will always walk as children of the light, and will keep the flame of faith alive in their hearts. Votive candles are commonplace staples of devotion that are used daily by billions of Christians (including Eastern Orthodox, Roman Catholics, Episcopalians, Anglicans, Lutherans, and Methodists) in churches throughout the world. For many people, one of the first actions upon entering a church is lighting a candle and offering a prayer usually a prayer for a particular need, person, or intention. Here at Christ the King, 100 new votive candles have been placed in the tabernacle area. You are welcome to light a candle (as they are available) before or after Mass as you offer a prayer. Parents and catechists are especially encouraged to teach children about the practice of lighting a candle and praying for particular people and needs. When we are in the church, the burning candles will remind us of the many needs that exist in our community, among our brothers and sisters. They also remind us of the need to pray for those people in our own lives whose burdens are heavy those who are walking through the darkness. We pray that Christ will make known to them the light of his presence, healing, and strength. Long after we leave the church, and the lights in the church are turned off, the votive candles will continue to burn in the presence of the Lord. This signifies our desire to remain present to the Lord in prayer even after we depart and go about our daily business. ALTAR SERVER TRAINING We are looking for new altar servers in grades 4 and up to join us in ministry at Christ the King. Altar Servers assist the priest at the 5 p.m., 9:15 and 11:30 a.m. weekend masses. This ministry is a wonderful way for our young people to become engaged in our liturgies and to serve the community. We will have training sessions on October 21: 3-5 p.m. and October 28: 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. Please contact Heather Skidds if you are interested in becoming a new altar server at hskidds@gmail.com or (401) STEPHEN MINISTRY MESSAGE There are events in our lives that leave us feeling as bereft as if there had been a death. Sometimes, it may even feel that a death might be easier to accept. Kent Krueger wrote, For each of us the sun sets and the sun also rises. Through the grace of our Lord we can endure our own dark night and rise at the dawning of a new day and rejoice. The help of a Stephen Minister can bring a light in that dark night and help bring the dawning of a bright new day. Call Larry Bartley at ( LJBJR@cox.net). Carol Hartley at ( CTK_StephenMinistry@verizon.net) or call the office at for more information. PEACE & JUSTICE NEWS Please join us on Wednesday October 18 at 7:30 p.m. for our monthly Peace and Justice meeting. We will welcome Victoria Strang of the RI Interfaith Coalition to Reduce Poverty, who will discuss legislative priorities for the upcoming legislative year. SNOWBIRDS If you flock south in the winter and receive our budget envelopes, please call Beth in the office with the dates you will be away. QUOTE OF THE WEEK Everything will be redeemed. Everything. - Pope Francis, preaching to pilgrims in St. Peter's Square on Wednesday in a homily that emphasized the need for Christians to persevere and trust in Jesus.
