1 FEATURED INSIDE Join us this weekend to celebrate our parish Feast Day: Solemnity of Christ the King. There will be receptions in the hall after all Masses. Page 2 The Public Religion Research Institute published a report about spirituality and religion in America. According to the survey, 71% of adults who identify as spiritual said that they were inspired or touched by listening to a piece of music in the past week. We are truly blessed to have such beautiful music at CTK! Find out how to listen to our recent concert! This weekend, the last Sunday of the liturgical year, November 25/26, our Church celebrates the Feast of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. As a people of faith, we celebrate the coming reign of Christ as King of the Earth as we look forward to the fullness of the Kingdom of God. Recognizing Christ as King for all time provides the bridge to begin a new a new church year on the First Sunday of Advent, a new cycle of hope and expectation, a renewed longing for the light of Christ to break through the darkness of a sinful world. This is especially meaningful to us as members of the parish of Christ the King, to recommit ourselves to sharing our time, talent, and treasure in service to Christ our King. Please join us for receptions in the hall after each Mass. RELIGIOUS FORMATION No classes this weekend for the Thanksgiving holiday! Classes resume Sunday, December 3 for Pre-K Grade 7. 2 ND GRADE Reconciliation: Morning of Reflection for parent and child on Saturday, December 3, 9-11a.m. Please note this Morning is only for the First Communion student and a parent. The morning will include activities to learn about Reconciliation and will end with the children receiving their First Penance. Grade 5 Retreat / Reconciliation and Mass The grade 5 students will participate in a Reconciliation retreat from 2-6 p.m. on Saturday, December 10. Students will be preparing for Reconciliation and then will have the opportunity to receive the Sacrament. They will also prepare for their roles as ministers at 5:00 p.m. Mass. The 7 th Grade needs FLEECE: As the weather gets colder we are all seeking warmth! There is still a need for fleece please consider dropping off 1 ¼ yard pieces to be used to make blankets for those less fortunate. For approximately $15.00, the 7 th graders can make a blanket! Many fabric shops including Walmart and Joann are running specials on fleece right now add some time into your Christmas shopping to help others. Currently we have enough fleece to make 12 blankets we would like to make at least 50. There is a drop off box in the parish hall or you can send it into class with your student.
3 This year, the annual concert enjoyed its largest audience ever, as more than 2,000 people watched the concert livestream last Friday. Earlier this month, the Public Religion Research Institute published a report about spirituality and religion in America. According to the survey, 71% of adults who identify as spiritual said that they were inspired or touched by listening to a piece of music in the past week. This is a significant majority of spiritually-oriented Americans (those who practice religion and those who don t) who ranked music above meditation and traditional prayer as their greatest source of inspiration. In the Catholic tradition, music and prayer are often seen as one spiritual exercise. It was Saint Augustine who said that he who sings prays twice. And, from Vatican II s Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, we are taught: The musical tradition of the universal Church is a treasure of inestimable value, greater even than that of any other art. The main reason for this pre-eminence is that, as a combination of sacred music and words, it forms a necessary or integral part of solemn liturgy. The composition and singing of inspired psalms, often accompanied by musical instruments, were already closely linked to the liturgical celebrations of the Old Covenant. The Church continues and develops this tradition: Address... one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with all your heart. A 2014 poll found that while 80% of U.S. Catholics believe that music at Mass was very important to them, only 13% percent believe that the current state of liturgical music was wonderful. Well, I know that I speak on behalf of the entire parish family when I say that we are all part of that 13 percent! And, as we celebrate the patronal feast of our parish this weekend, I give thanks for all those who are a part of our music ministry: you are proclaiming the joy of the Gospel to us week in and week out! You lift us up at funeral Masses; you help us to praise our Lord; you echo the joy and devotion that fills our hearts and you offer it to God on our behalf, and this makes you true ministers of music. Thanks especially to everyone who took part in the annual concert last week. The sanctuary was filled with our faithful and devoted music ministers vocalists and instrumentalists, youth and adults and they were awesome! You can still see the concert online by visiting Thanks to our leaders of music ministry, Tom Kendzia and Heather Skidds, for all the many hours of planning, preparation, and practicing not only for the concert, but for every season, feast, and Mass throughout the year. I know that all of our music ministers are honored and humbled to be called by the Lord into such an important ministry in the life of the Church, and I know how much they appreciate our support. All they ask in return is that we sing along what a bargain! QUOTE OF THE WEEK It is greatly disappointing that the U.S. House of Representatives ignored impacts to the poor and families including those who welcome life through adoption or have more than three children and passed the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act without needed changes. According to the nonpartisan congressional Joint Committee on Taxation (JCT), this bill raises taxes on the working poor beginning in 2023, and simultaneously gives large tax cuts to millionaires. The November 9 letter of the USCCB detailed the many deficiencies in the House bill, including the elimination of the personal exemption, which will hurt larger families, and the repeal of the out-of-pocket medical expenses deduction, which will harm those with serious and chronic illness. While we are grateful that the House restored the adoption tax credit, it still repeals an important exclusion for families assisted by their employer to adopt children in need, and eliminates incentives for charitable giving. For families working hard for economic security, the bill eliminates the Work Opportunity Tax Credit, and tax relief for persons paying for tuition and student loans, as well as those who retire on disability, among other things... The Senate must act decisively to avoid the deficiencies in the House legislation, and craft a final bill that affirms life, cares for the poor, and ensures national tax policy aimed at the common good. - Bishop Frank J. Dewane of Venice, Florida, chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops' Committee on Domestic Justice and Human Development, November 17, 2017
