Purpose: To provide a safe, friendly, supportive environment where cancer survivors can share their experiences and offer encouragement to one another. In addition to support, community, and learning, the group will provide information on healthy nutrition and exercise habits that can assist the healing process. We are fortunate to have Bob Maher, a cancer survivor and parishioner as the facilitator for the group. Any parishioner who is currently being treated for cancer or has been treated for cancer in the past is welcome. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Bob Maher at: bmaher71@verizon.net. GRATEFUL FOR GOD S PROVIDENCE More than $250,000 pledged so far!! If you have not participated to date, please help us build on this success and reach our goal! We need everyone to contribute to this endeavor in order to be successful! The campaign is based on equal sacrifice, not equal giving. All gifts, no matter the size, are needed and greatly appreciated. The smallest sacrifices, over time, equal a significant contribution to our campaign. Examples of other families sacrifices: $1.75 coffee a day x 30 days in a month = $52.50 monthly pledge $13.99 pizza a week x 52 weeks = $ yearly pledge $50 restaurant meal a month x 48 months= $2,400, 4-year commitment. Quotes of the Week More than 130 U.S. bishops or nearly one-third of those still living have been accused during their careers of failing to adequately respond to sexual misconduct in their dioceses, according to a Philadelphia Inquirer and Boston Globe examination of court records, media reports, and interviews with church officials, victims, and attorneys. At least 15, including Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, the former archbishop of Washington who resigned in July, have themselves been accused of committing such abuse or harassment... Most telling, the analysis shows that the claims against more than 50 bishops center on incidents that occurred after a historic 2002 Dallas gathering of US bishops where they promised that the church s days of concealment and inaction were over. - Failure at the Top, The Boston Globe, November 3, There are still abusive Catholic clergy in America; they must be rooted out and dismissed from the ministry. There are still bishops who don t get it and they, too, must go. - George Weigel, Roots of Catholic Anger, First Things, November 7, I am a man of integrity. - Bishop Richard Malone of Buffalo, in response to questions about his role in covering up abuse after a former assistant released hundreds of secret documents that showed how Malone repeatedly mishandled cases. BIBLE STUDY WITH FR. JARED Our look at St. Paul s Letter to the Romans continues this Wednesday, November 14. We are still in chapter 1, so if you missed the first few sessions, you don t have much to make up! The Letter to the Romans, considered by many to be the most important letter every written, is the legacy of St. Paul and one of the most significant and theological works in all the Bible. Its influence on Christianity is unparalleled. We are not called to be scripture scholars, but we are called to know the Bible! Join us on this journey through the good news of Paul s preaching about the goodness of God, whose will is that all who believe are justified freely by his amazing grace! There are two opportunities to attend Bible study: 1:00pm or 7:00pm. Classes meet in the church hall. All are welcome! Free Bibles for everyone!

5 CHRIST THE KING, KINGSTON STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE Fiscal Year Ended June 30, 2018 SPECIAL COLLECTIONS The regular weekly collection for the year totaled $954,005, a slight increase of 1.8% from the previous fiscal year ended June 30, If we include special collections, they totaled $60,748, up 16% from the previous year - then overall giving for the year was up 3%. The special collections support Catholic charities and missions including: Catholic Relief Services; Operation Rice bowl; The Church in Latin America; Peter s Pence (the charitable works of the Holy Father); and the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. There were also diocesan collections for retired priests and religious, the education of seminarians who are studying for the priesthood, and the annual collection that took place in the summer of 2017 of the visiting missionary preacher from Appalachia (that collection alone totaled $9,928). There are two ways that you can give to these special collections. You can use the weekly budget envelopes from the parish or, if you do not receive weekly budget envelopes, you may use the white envelopes at the entrances to the church marked SPECIAL COLLECTION and drop your donation into the parish collection during the offertory. CATHOLIC CHARITY FUND APPEAL This year our parish family joined together and gave $227,227 to the annual Catholic Charity Appeal. Our donations to the Catholic Charity Appeal support the mission and ministry of our diocesan church, funding various diocesan agencies and ministries including Project Hope; the St. Martin de Porres Center; Emmanuel House; the St. Clare Home; the URI Catholic Center and diocesan campus ministry; Catholic school tuition assistance grants; the Office of Health Care Ministries; AIDS ministry; immigration and refugee services; the Dire Emergency Fund; and the Apostolate for the Handicapped, among many others. Hundreds of thousands of Rhode Islanders who are in need benefit from this appeal! CHARITABLE GIVING Every year, the parish gives away a portion of its regular weekly collection to charities and agencies whose mission is consistent with the mission of the Gospel and the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. These charities and agencies are suggested by parishioners and approved by the Parish Council, the Pastor, and the Bishop. This year s recipients included: Big Brothers Big Sisters of Rhode Island (Cranston); Center for Nonviolence (Kingston); The Haitian Project (Providence); Habitat for Humanity (Charlestown; McCauley House (Providence); RICAN (Charlestown); St. Thomas Food Pantry (Providence); WA.R.M. Shelter (Westerly); Operation Stand Down; Pawtucket Soup Kitchen; Pregnancy Center of Westerly. In addition, the URI Catholic Center received $10,000. Also, Assumption Church in Providence received $13,492. ANNUAL TOTAL All told, parishioners gave more than $1,286,900 to and through Christ The King Church! Keep up your tremendous generosity as together we continue the mission and ministry entrusted to us by Jesus! And be sure to read the parish bulletin and the Mustard Seed Newsletter to learn about all we do together to bring the joy and hope of the Gospel to so many of our brothers and sisters in need throughout Rhode Island and around the world!
