2 Mass Intentions Sunday, April 28 8:00 a.m. Bernice McCormick 9:15 a.m. Al Bellucci Elizabeth Greene Donna Gentile 11:30 a.m. Richard Keogh Alleluia! Christ is Risen! Shattering the darkness, the great Paschal candle is lit with the Easter fire, with five wax nails of incense embedded the symbol of the crucified and risen Christ. The Paschal Mystery is clearly and joyfully announced forty days of fast yield to fifty days of feast. We proclaim with the psalmist: This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad! (adapted from LTP Sourcebook 2019) CONFIRMATION FOR ADULTS Any adult who has received the sacraments of Baptism and Eucharist but has not received Confirmation is invited to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit during Mass on Pentecost Sunday. Several adults have already expressed their intention to be confirmed at this Mass. While the RCIA program remains in place for those who are unbaptized and have yet to receive the message, this Pentecost ceremony is for Catholic adults who have accepted the message of the Gospel years ago and have been practicing the Catholic faith as initiated disciples who have already been baptized and receive Holy Communion. If you would like to be confirmed during this Confirmation ceremony within Sunday Mass on Pentecost (June 9, please contact Jennifer Marran for more information. RELIGIOUS FORMATION First Communions will start next weekend - thank you in advance to all those front row parishioners who will be displaced for the next four weeks, as the communicants and their families will be sitting in the first two rows. Books, Books, Books; we are missing a number of textbooks and some came back in pretty tough shape! When doing your spring cleaning, check your cars, your mudrooms, and shelves for books. We would love to have them all back. These books are almost $20 each! If your book is bad shape or lost consider writing a check to cover the expense of replacing it. Checks can be made out to Christ the King Parish. There is a textbook return box located in the parish hallway under the bulletin board. Rite of Christian Initiation (RCIA) It is with great joy that we welcome Amy Gannon into our parish family! Amy has spent many months as a catechumen, learning more about the Catholic faith. At the Easter Vigil, Amy received the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist for full initiation into the Church. She joins her husband Scott and son Jack in membership in our community. Congratulations and Welcome, Amy! SHOE COLLECTION Sponsored by the Social Action Committee WANTED: Gently worn children s, men s and women s shoes, boots, sandals. Please place shoes in designated donation boxes Saturday/Sunday April 27/28 Donations to benefit: Clothes to Kids Rhode Island and Soles4Souls.org. Everyone deserves a good pair of shoes. Everyday, children are prevented from attending school, adults are unable to work. Walking becomes unbearable. A new pair of shoes provides relief in many developing nations around the globe, in times of disaster, and helps bridge the economic gap in the United states and Canada.
3 Quotes of the Week The former Pope Benedict XVI ended years of silence to address the abuse scandal in the Catholic church, blaming it on the sexual revolution of the 1960s that he said made pedophilia allowed and appropriate. Ex-Pope Benedict XVI addresses church sex abuse, contradicting Pope Francis. UPI. April 11, Benedict XVI s letter is deeply flawed. The willingness to blame a permissive culture and progressive theology for a problem that is internal and structural is stunning. Julie Rubio, professor of theology at Santa Clara University. Ex-pope says sexual revolution led to abuse crisis, sparking debate. Reuters. April 11, This is an embarrassing letter. The idea that ecclesial abuse of children was a result of the 1960s, a supposed collapse of moral theology, and conciliarity (the Church after the Second Vatican Council) is an embarrassingly wrong explanation for the systemic abuse of children and its cover-up. Brian Flanagan, professor of theology at Marymount University in Virginia. Twitter. April 10, Let s be clear: It wasn t society or modernity or liberalism that normalized child abuse among the priesthood. That was the work of bishops, from the Roman Curia on down. Bishops authorized secret payoffs for victims to stave off criminal prosecutions. Bishops sent offenders on spiritual retreats when society would have clapped them in jail. Bishops hid the records and attacked the truth-tellers. And popes often rewarded those bishops with sinecures. There is no path out of this crisis that doesn t begin with confession and atonement by the hierarchy not in some stilted statement or three-day confab, but concrete and genuine and over many, many years. What s happening is not God s judgment on secular society; it is God s challenge to a corrupted church. Even Francis, with his eyes wide open to the epidemic of pride and deceit inside the Vatican, has struggled to grasp the implications of this long failure of moral leadership and the extent of change it demands. When the emeritus or superfluous pope steps in to offer a shield against the necessary accountability and humility, it s clear the church has a problem. Two popes is one too many. David Von Drehle, Pope Benedict shows us how the Catholic Church went so terribly off-course. The Washington Post. April 12, Benedict told us he was going to live a life of quiet contemplation, said Christopher Bellitto, a historian who has written extensively on centuries of popes. He has not. A former pope should not be publishing or giving interviews. These are actions only appropriate for one who actually holds a pastoral office, said [Richard] Gaillardetz, a professor at Boston College. So now we have a situation in which a former pope is offering a parallel pastoral and theological assessment and a parallel pastoral and theological agenda that cannot help but be viewed as an alternative to the exercise pastoral leadership of the current and only bishop of Rome, he said. Theologians concerned about newly engaged role of Benedict, pope emeritus. National Catholic Reporter. April 12, It s a myopic and reductionist critique that erroneously assumes systemic sexual abuse perpetrated by clergy didn t exist prior to the 1960s. It also ignores the fact that the sexual revolution of the 1960s was largely a Western European and American phenomenon when even by the late 1960s, the majority of Catholics were in the Global South, especially Africa and Latin America, where systemic abuse is even more acute due to less oversight. Andrew Chesnut, chair in Catholic Studies at Virginia Commonwealth University. Embarrassingly wrong : Benedict blasted for blaming homosexuality, sexual revolution for church abuse crisis. USA Today. April 11, When I was in Rome for the sex abuse summit in February listening to bishops for four straight days, one aspect that stunned me was this general sense that if the hierarchy could come up with the best practices and policies and procedures, they could somehow administer the problem away. There was absolutely no sense that the sex abuse crisis had anything to do with the church s limited, taboo-based teaching on sexual morality. There was no sense of a need to re-think the teachings on sex; no need to reckon with the hierarchy s authoritarianism and understanding of its own power as beyond questioning or reproach. In a strange way, Benedict is right to bring sexuality into the conversation on what caused the sex abuse crisis. What he doesn t see is that the rigid, shamebased sexual morality that he enforced for decades only exacerbated the problem. What he also does not see is that the abuse crisis came about not because humanity lost sight of God, but because men decided to act like gods. Pope Benedict explains things to me. National Catholic Reporter. April 12, 2019.

5 MEET THE YOUTH MISSION TEAM On July 8 th a group of youth will travel to Camden, NJ for a weeklong urban challenge program rooted in the Catholic faith tradition offering a point of access to the lives and stories of the people of Camden, Pennsauken and Philadelphia. Meet the pioneer young women: Emily Jalbert, a freshman at the Prout school, CCD second grade teacher, swimmer and Irish dancer can t wait for this amazing experience. Christina Lopresti, also a Prout school student and runner who enjoys taking photographs. Grace MacKrell, an 8 th grader at Davisville Middle school who also runs track, swims, and plays soccer; who enjoys helping others and serving for our church community. She hopes by her example that other newly confirmed students will participate. Ruby Nunnery, a freshman at North Kingstown High school who also runs track, is an accomplished quilter and led her own service project for deployed service members. Alexa Mitchell, our senior member of the group (so far) also attends North Kingstown High School. She loves to read, write, listen to music, dance, learn and everything in between. She has a zest for life and a passion for helping others. She believes that if she can improve one person s day in any way then our mission trip is successful. Bridget Robenhymer, an 8 th grader at Wickford Middle School who enjoys swimming, playing lacrosse, and participating in track and field. She likes working with kids and enjoys their company. It gives me great pride to give back to my community and I look forward to this trip. Giuliana Gallucci, an 8 th grader at St. Rose of Lima who is grateful for the opportunity to be part of her first mission trip and meeting new people. Although she is the only member of her school serving, she shares many of the same interests; playing competitive sports such as basketball, soccer, volleyball and tennis. Lauren Wessman, a freshman at Prout who also plays volleyball and runs track. She looks forward to meeting new people, developing new relationships and sharing her mission experience with our group. She notes that her experience last summer working with refugees and their children in Maine that the experience was very humbling. As you can see, although these young women did not know each other well, they share a lot in common. Join us for the pancake breakfast on May 5 th and meet the pioneer ladies in person. If you are inspired to join us we have room for a few more young people. Applications are online and will close on May 1. Meet the Leaders joining Miss Eva: MaryBeth Nunnery, a seasoned missionary and mother of five, she looks forward to working with the high school students. An accomplished runner, triathlete, she inspires us to persevere. Moira Suryanarayan, a mother of two who has been a parishioner for ten years. She is excited to be part of this trip because she believes it is important to give back for all the blessings given, especially cooking!
