The Knights Tale Davis Lambright Council #4101 Fort Worth, Texas Newsletter for November 2016 Grand Knight s Report Greetings Brother Knights, The month of November is here at last, and we can see that the end of this calendar year is now in sight along with the holiday season. The work I've seen from everyone is awe-inspiring, and I hope to see more of it especially now on this month. As many of you are aware, our Tootsie Roll Drive, which is our biggest fundraiser for our council, will be taking place on the 25th and 26th of November. We will begin at 9AM and conclude our operations at 3PM. We will meet inside Cowtown Bar-B-Que, located in Ridgmar Farmers Market across from the mall. It is vital that we have committed members come to assist in this event, as this happens only once a year. So in conclusion, we must make this count. Of course, we must also remember that this is also the month of Thanksgiving. The history actually stems from the English colonists we call Pilgrims, who celebrated days of thanksgiving as part of their religion. But these were actually days of prayer, not days of feasting, as so many know it to be now. We too should be thankful for all that we have in our lives, and above all else, we should thank God for giving us a road to redemption through his only son, Jesus Christ, for without Him, we would be lost. So as we reflect on what we are thankful for in life, let us remember the words from the book of James: "Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change." - James 1:17 Thank you, and may the Lord watch over us all. Fraternally yours, Lorenzo R. Mendez, Jr. - Grand Knight
Pope Francis Names 17 New Cardinals, Including 3 Americans It was believed to be the first time in recent history a Vatican ambassador, known as a nuncio, would have the rank of cardinal. The pope has made numerous appeals for an end to Syria's war and last month he urged forces to stop bombing civilians in Aleppo, warning them they would face God's judgment one day. The four new cardinals over 80, who get the position as a symbolic honor to thank them for long service to the Church, include Father Ernest Simoni, 88, an Albanian priest who spent many years in jail and forced labor during the communist dictatorship of Enver Hoxha, who died in Francis, making the surprise announcement during his weekly Sunday address, said the ceremony to elevate the prelates, known as a consistory, would be held on Nov. 19. With the current batch, Francis has named 44 cardinal-electors, slightly more than two thirds of the total of 120 allowed by Church law. It will be his third consistory since his election in 2013 as the first non-european pontiff in 1,300 years and he has used each occasion to show support for the Church in far flung places or where Catholics are suffering. The Central African Republic, Bangladesh, Papua New Guinea, Malaysia and Lesotho will have a cardinal for the first time, underscoring Francis' conviction that the Church is a global institution that should become increasingly less Euro-centric. Last year the pope visited Bangui, capital of the Central African Republic. Amid some of the tightest security ever seen on his trips, he preached reconciliation in the nation racked by bloodshed between Muslims and Christians. Only one of the 13 cardinal-electors will take on a Vatican job. The others would remain in their posts around the world. Three are from the United States: Archbishop Blase Cupich of Chicago, Archbishop William Tobin of Indianapolis and Bishop Kevin Farrell of Dallas, who was recently appointed to head a new Vatican department on family and life issues. In addition to Simoni, the Albanian priest, the other three cardinals over 80 come from Malaysia, Italy and Lesotho.
Here is the full list of new cardinals: Archbishop Mario Zenari (Italy), Vatican ambassador in Syria Archbishop Dieudonne Nzapalainga of Bangui, Central African Republic Archbishop Carlos Osoro Sierra of Madrid, Spain Archbishop Sergio da Rocha of Brasilia, Brazil Archbishop Blase J. Cupich of Chicago Archbishop Patrick D'Rozario of Dhaka, Bangladesh Archbishop Baltazar Enrique Porras Cardozo of Merida, Venezuela Archbishop Jozef De Kesel of Malines-Brussels, Belgium Archbishop Maurice Piat of Port Louis, Mauritius Bishop Kevin Joseph Farrell, former Bishop of Dallas and head of a newly created Vatican department Archbishop Carlos Aguiar Retes of Tlalnepantla, Mexico Archbishop John Ribat of Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea Archbishop Joseph William Tobin of Indianapolis Archbishop Emeritus Anthony Soter Fernandez of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Archbishop Emeritus Renato Corti of Novara, Italy Archbishop Emeritus Sebastian Koto Khoarai of Mohale's Hoek, Lesotho Father Ernest Simoni of Shkoder, Albania Pope photobombed at Vatican by grinning dog The Pope is normally the center of attention when he appears at the Vatican. But on this occasion he was upstaged by a dog. The smiling pooch was pictured behind him when he met a dog training group in Saint Peter s Square. The owner of the grinning animal had held it aloft as Pope Francis was passing during his weekly audience. The result was an impromptu photobomb that will probably go down as one of the greatest pics ever taken at the Vatican. Pope Francis eventually blessed the animals and also petted them. The mutts were accompanied by officials from the Italian Federation for dog sports.
Pope, in surprise visit, comforts survivors of Italian earthquake ROME (Reuters) - Pope Francis made a surprise visit on Tuesday to towns and villages devastated by an earthquake that killed nearly 300 people in central Italy in August, comforting residents who lost everything and praying together for the dead. The Vatican, which kept the trip secret until he arrived, issued pictures showing him standing alone and praying amid the rubble of Amatrice, one of the hardest-hit towns, with its still-standing church bell tower in the distance. Addressing distraught residents with a megaphone, he said he wanted to come earlier but he did not want "to bother anyone" and preferred to let things settle down, particularly the building of a makeshift school. "From the first moment, I knew I wanted to come here, simply to say I am close to you. That I am close to you, nothing more. I pray for you," he said. "In this moment of sadness and pain, let's move forward while remembering our dear ones who died here under the rubble. Let us pray for them," he said. He visited the "red zone", which covers the center of Amatrice and is closed to the public because it is still dangerous, with most of the buildings either leveled or considered too badly damaged to live in. A parent broke down in tears in the school as he greeted the pope. Other residents stopped his car to touch his hand from the window as moved past tent cities to visit one devastated place after another, including Accumoli, Pescara del Tronto, Arquata del Tronto and San Pellegrino di Norcia. The visit took place on the feast of the pope's namesake, St. Francis of Assisi. He also visited a base camp for fire brigades and made a surprise stop to share a meal with residents of a home for the elderly, many of whom lost their houses in the quake. Luca Cari, spokesman for the national fire brigades, said during the visit to Amatrice's "red zone" the pope stopped to pray with the rescue workers and thanked them. On the plane returning from Azerbaijan on Sunday, Francis said he had been given a choice of three days when he could visit but would not reveal which one he had chosen. He said he wanted to visit "privately, alone, as a priest, as a bishop, as pope, but alone, privately. I want to be close to the people." The government estimates that the Aug. 24 earthquake northeast of Rome caused damage of at least 4 billion euros ($4.5 billion).
Vatican: No more scattering of cremation ashes VATICAN CITY (AP) -- The Vatican on Tuesday published guidelines for Catholics who want to be cremated, saying their remains cannot be scattered, divvied up or kept at home but rather stored in a sacred, church-approved place. the dead. The new instructions were released just in time for Halloween and "All Souls Day" on Nov. 2, when the faithful are supposed to pray for and remember For most of its 2,000-year history, the Catholic Church only permitted burial, arguing that it best expressed the Christian hope in resurrection. But in 1963, the Vatican explicitly allowed cremation as long as it didn't suggest a denial of faith about resurrection.
