It is a time where self-centered concerns are being put in front of the family and the care of our society as a whole. It s all about me. This all about me mindset which is obviously prevalent and in essence taught, is completely opposed to our catholic faith. Sadly, I confess at times I have lost sight of this, worrying about concerns in my life. In doing this I have often put myself first. Why worry? Did our Lord not say every hair on your head has been counted. There is no need to be afraid: you are worth more than many sparrows? Then He goes on to say if anyone openly declares himself for me in the presence of human beings, the Son of man will declare Himself for him in the presence of God's angels.( Luke12, 7:8) But what does openly declaring oneself for our Lord mean? It does not mean writing a letter to the Star Ledger stating that you believe in Jesus Christ. It does not mean hanging a rosary on your review mirror or wearing I love Jesus t-shirts, though there is nothing wrong with either. It means doing the will of God. Because when we do the His will, we love Him and by doing this all men will know that you are His child and that is an open declaration. Doing God s will should be easy but due to the fall and the temptations constantly before us, it just isn t. There are the false promises of joy and pleasure on this earth which cause us to fall in small things and even in grave matter. Yet our God is merciful and a repentant soul will receive mercy. But a repentant soul must also make good by going the extra step and making his way back and doing works of mercy which truly show our love for God and His church. Jesus said; you shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind and you shall love your neighbor as yourself. (Matthew 22, 37:40) Because it is in doing this that we are truly declaring ourselves for him and that is what we do as brother knights. To do this we need to stick together and support each other in any way we can. The first step in doing this is to pay the annual dues. These dues are the seed money used to maintain our activities. This money supports our works, such as for homes of unwed mothers; the poor, brothers in need, persecuted Christians and many more. Please pay your dues and encourage other brothers to do so as well. If the Lord wills it join us in our works of mercy as well. I end with a wonderful quote I read recently by St. John Vianney. We must love while we suffer, and we must suffer if we love.

Our council is in need of more volunteers to participate in council activities. We need your help by becoming a Council Officer or by taking the lead for some of our events planned for the Columbian Year of We are all volunteers. Manpower is limited with many of us becoming more active in our own parishes that we serve. It has become a challenge. With this feast day, the liturgical season of Christmas is officially concluded, and we begin Ordinary Time. However, it should not be seen merely as a point of transition upon which we shift from one liturgical season to another. There is a reason the Church designates it a feast, and there is much to celebrate because of the event it commemorates. First, it must be said that Jesus was in no way in need of baptism or repentance of sin; He was sinless, after all. John the Baptist eludes to this in Matthew s account of the Gospel (Matthew 3:14-15). Question: Why does He insist that John baptize Him, then? Answer: It was for our benefit, not His own. People and things that have contact with the Lord are utterly transformed and elevated. The blind receive sight; the lame and paralyzed are able to move, walk, jump, and carry; the deaf are able to hear; the mute speak; lepers are cleansed; the woman with the hemorrhage is made

Our Lady of Fatima Pilgrimage Excursion to Portugal July 2018 Contact Dick Rader Richard.rader@verizon.net Chapter 1 Next Chapter Meeting: Friday, January 26 at 7:30 pm hosted by Montclair Council 1277 whole; the possessed are rid of their diabolical, supernatural oppression; even the dead are restored to life; the cross that was an instrument of torture, oppression, and death becomes a symbol of eternal life, freedom, and the end to all suffering. And, the guilty are forgiven their sins. Everything that Jesus touches and/or participates in is made whole, holy, and perfect baptism included. In ancient Judaism (and contemporary for that matter), the ritual of baptism is ceremonial and symbolic; it is an outward expression of inward repentance and desire to be forgiven of one s sins. This is what John the Baptist and the people he was baptizing at the Jordan River believed and understood they were doing. It was Jesus, in the act of being baptized Himself, Who transformed it from a ceremonial symbol and expression of repentance into a powerful, efficacious Sacrament that accomplishes precisely what the penitent desires the forgiveness from all of their sin. As wonderful as that is, to reduce sacramental baptism to the removal of sin (especially if it is original sin only) is minimalist in the extreme. Baptism is in many ways the most glorious of sacraments, certainly for us. When Christ is baptized, the Father proclaims from Heaven, This is my beloved Son in Whom I am well-pleased. At the moment of our baptism, the Father says exactly the same of us. We are truly baptized into Christ, into His life and into His death, into His burial and into His Resurrection. His glory becomes our glory. His righteousness becomes our righteousness. His relationship with His Father becomes our relationship with Our Father. That is how we are able to bear the Holy Spirit in our bodies as a temple. It is how we are true co-heirs to the Eternal Kingdom with Christ. And, it is how we are able to receive all of the other Sacraments. It is how we are able to receive the glorified, resurrected Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of the Eternal Word made flesh in the Holy Eucharist. It is how we are able to be absolved from sin in Confession. It is how we are able to receive the fullness of the power and gifts of the Holy Spirit in Confirmation. It is how our Marriages become holy, sacred, and fruitful expressions of the establishment of the Kingdom of God on Earth. And it is how mere men are able to be made ministers of Christ in the Priesthood, bestowing these supernatural, divine, heavenly riches upon the holy People of God as faithful stewards of God s grace. This is what St. Paul meant when He said, It is no longer I who live, but Christ Who lives in me (Galatians 2:20). May we all truly know and live the tremendous gift that is our baptism.-fr. 5 Welcome our newest member! Our newest brother is a young man from Mountainside. His name is Saverio Zipeto. At Our Lady of Lourdes we are lucky to have him. If you ask the Pastor he will tell you what a great help he was as an altar server and an inspiration to the rest of the young men. He also currently serves on the Mountainside Volunteer Rescue Squad and has started his own business aptly called Zipeto Creations. New Third Degree Members Congratulations to brothers Ben Chiang and Dick Rader on completion of their third Degree! Three of the officers of the council made the trip with them to Jackson for the event; the GK, FS and Inside Guard were present to witness their progression and they both made us proud. Additionally, Ben Chiang accomplished something that the conferring officer told me had never been done before. To find out what ask us at the next meeting. EXTRA Special Thanks! Once again our Christmas gift drive or the ARC of Union County was a success and due to the great efforts of Ed Dicker and his lovely wife Lauren. In our estimation the council raised about $4,000- worth of gifts. Also, thanks to Brothers John Cuzzo and George Royston (pictured) for delivering the gifts. And a great thank you for the support of the Columbia Club as well. To all the brothers, support of this program brings love and smiles to many faces that otherwise may not have received anything.
