3 Top Ten Highlights 1 The Shrine of Saint Alban The Shrine of Saint Alban is a site of national Pilgrimage. People have been coming here for over 1700 years and it is used as a place of prayer and stillness by visitors every day. 2 The Longest Nave in England At 85 metres, St Albans Cathedral has the longest nave in England. 3 Easter at the Cathedral Join us for special services during Holy Week and Easter, which this year falls on Sunday 21st April. See Pages for full details. 4 The Watching Loft From the Watching Loft, monks and townsmen kept guard over the Shrine of Saint Alban. 5 Stunning Medieval Wall Paintings The Cathedral has one of the oldest and most extensive series of medieval wall paintings surviving today, ranging from the late 12th century to the 16th century. 6 The Bell Tower St Albans is the only major church in England with a great crossing tower of the 11th century still standing. 7 Choral Evensong Time your visit to enjoy the beautiful singing of the Cathedral Choirs at Evensong. Mass in E Minor is Bruckner's first masterpiece, combining the simplicity of Italian Renaissance polyphony with rich harmony and powerful combinations of vocal and instrumental texture. 5 Music I Was Glad: A Collection of English Choral Classics Date: Wednesday 13th March Time: 7.30pm The combined choirs, orchestras and choral society of St Albans School and St Albans High School for Girls join forces for their annual concert. The programme will feature choral anthems by Hubert Parry and choral and orchestral favourites from his students William Walton and Edward Elgar. The programme will also feature Vaughan Williams moving cantata Dona Nobis Pacem. Tickets from 10. St Albans Choral Society JS Bach: St John Passion Date: Saturday 23rd March Time: 7.30pm Conductor: George Vass with Orchestra Nova Mark Dobell (Evangelist), Edward Grint (Christus), Kirsty Hopkins (soprano), Rebecca Afonwy-Jones (mezzo-soprano), Mark Dobell (tenor), Samuel Pantcheff (baritone) Composed for Good Friday vespers in 1724, Bach s masterpiece perfectly balances the theatrical with the devotional. In this performance, to be sung in German, St Albans Choral Society is joined by a stellar line-up of soloists and accompanied by the critically acclaimed Orchestra Nova. Tickets from 10. This an opportunity to sing a famous reflection on the Passion in the period leading up to Good Friday itself, and in a wonderful space with a renowned conductor. Price: 12 to participate. 5 for audience members. 8 Call the Box Office on St Albans Bach Choir St Albans Bach Choir (C) Chris Christodoulou St Albans Bach Choir Date: Saturday 6th April Time: 7.30pm John Rutter: Magnificat and Requiem Leonard Bernstein: Chichester Psalms Conductors: Andrew Lucas and John Rutter Elizabeth Atherton (soprano), With Sinfonia Verdi A blend of Biblical Hebrew verse and Christian choral tradition, the first performance of Chichester Psalms in 1965, was a sell-out and its tuneful and contemporary melodies and unusual rhythms have been popular ever since. Rutter's lively and uplifting Magnificat, and his contemplative and intensely moving Requiem (which will be conducted by the composer himself), have become two of his most endearing and enduring works. 7 Special Services Holy Week & Easter Ephiphany and Candlemas Carol Service Date: Sunday 3rd February Time: 6.30pm A beautiful service of music and readings, sung by the Abbey Girls Choir and men of the Cathedral Choir. During Holy Week we are invited to share in Christ s own journey, from the triumphant entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday to the desolation of Good Friday and Holy Saturday and finally the joyful celebrations of Easter Sunday. Passiontide Service Taizé Service Date: Sunday 24th February Time: 6.30pm An evening service with instrumental music, a meditation and singing. Ash Wednesday Date: Wednesday 6th March Time: 8pm Choral Eucharist with imposition of ashes, marking the start of the season of Lent, sung by the Parish Singers. Maundy Thursday 18th April Chrism Eucharist Time: 11am (C) Ryan Fisher Quiet Abbey The Cathedral is kept open every Monday evening during Lent for prayer and reflection, from 8pm until 9.30pm. For further details, please visit A sung Eucharist gathering together the clergy and lay ministers throughout the diocese for an act of commitment to ministry and the blessing of the holy oils for use throughout the following year. Maundy Eucharist Time: 8pm This service includes the washing of the feet of 12 people and is followed by the stripping of all decoration from the altars. A vigil of prayer is kept until midnight. 8 Holy Week & Easter Easter Day Good Friday On the Sunday Jesus disciples found his tomb was empty, then met and ate with the risen Jesus. Easter celebrations continue with festival services throughout the day. 9.30am: Parish Eucharist Sung by the Cathedral Choir. 19th April Today we remember Jesus death on a cross. 10am: Good Friday Children s Activities On Good Friday, the Cathedral will hold a children's event for all primary school aged children. The event will involve a mixture of story-telling, activities and crafts. For more information, please visit the Cathedral website. Easter Monday 22nd April Easter Monday Pilgrimage People, young and old, walk to the Cathedral from across the diocese to meet and gather in the Cathedral from 2pm. Service starts at 3pm. Sung by the Cathedral Choir. 8pm: Unity at the Cross An ecumenical service led by Churches Together in St Albans. Easter Eve Saturday 20th April On the Saturday, Jesus body lay in the tomb. This is a quiet day of preparations for Easter celebrations which start as night falls. 4pm: Evensong The Alban Bun The Original Hot Cross Bun Sung by the Cathedral Choir. For nearly 700 years, the Alban Bun has been a part of the Easter tradition at St Albans Cathedral and will be available to buy this Easter from the Abbot s Kitchen. This predecessor of the Hot Cross Bun is said to originate in St Albans, where Brother Thomas Rocliffe, a 14th Century monk at St Albans Abbey, developed an original recipe and distributed the bun to the local poor on Good Friday, starting in These delicious buns are best served toasted and with butter! 8pm: Easter Vigil This first service of Easter begins quietly in darkness, but ends in joyful light and noise. 10 Exhibitions Family Fun Here at the Cathedral, children s events happen all year round. We especially love to welcome children and families during the school holidays, when we run our free Family Discovery Mornings. (C) Gary Perlmutter Jewish Living Experience Date: Tuesday 26th February Thursday 7th March In partnership with the Board of Deputies of British Jews, St Albans Masorti Synagogue and the local Jewish community, St Albans Cathedral is pleased to be hosting the Jewish Living Experience exhibition. This exciting and innovative experience is an ideal opportunity to learn more about the Jewish faith. For any schools groups interested in booking a visit, please contact the Education Centre on Oaklands College Art Exhibition Date: Friday 5th Monday 8th April Oaklands College students on the Foundation Diploma and Year 2 Extended Diploma are excited to exhibit in St Albans Cathedral. Work will be produced from a variety of creative disciplines including ceramics, photography, painting and drawing, print, graphics, textiles and three dimensional design. The project allows students to take a deep and investigative look at questions being raised by political and social changes happening in the contemporary world and express their responses from a young adult's point of view. For many students this is their first public exhibition before they graduate from Oaklands College to university. For exhibition opening times, please see the Cathedral website. Date: Thursday 21st February The first church was built on this spot over 1700 years ago, and as you can see, we re still building today! Find out how the Cathedral was built, learn about some of the objects found during the recent archaeological dig and enjoy some wonderful arts and craft activities. Animal Fun! Date: Thursday 11th April Springtime and Easter are linked to a variety of animals, and there are hundreds to be found hiding inside the Cathedral. See how many you can find, be creative and make some animal models of your own, and enjoy a taste of our special Easter chocolate fountain! 11 Special Events The Big Sing Festival Date: Saturday 26th January Time: 11am (rehearsal at Marlborough Road Methodist Church), 6.30pm (performance in the Cathedral) Price: Singers - 8 (children go free); Audience - 5 (children go free) Refreshments will be provided. Come and be a part of a magical day at St. Albans Cathedral. This year s Big Sing will be led by acclaimed musicians, Pete Letanka and Natalie Williams. Spend the day learning new songs in a variety of styles from jazz to pop, gospel to soul. In the evening, perform to family and friends in the Cathedral supported by a full band of professional musicians. No prior experience needed. 13 Talks Talks Shakespeare s Major Heroes: Flawed Saints or Deliberate Sinners? Date: Monday 18th March Time: 7.30pm Price: 10 There is a fascinating spiritual and moral aspect to Shakespeare s major heroes: Hamlet, Macbeth, Lear and Othello. This lecture will examine their qualities and failings, and how far they arise from personal weakness or evil intentions. It was a devastating experience for a king only just recovered from an episode of mental illness. Join historian Lauren Johnson as she explores Henry VI s reign and the Battle of St Albans in this illustrated talk, with book signing. Tutor: The Rev d Dr Kenneth Padley, Tutor in Church History Alban: How a Romano-British Martyr Became an Anglo-Saxon Saint Date: Thursday 4th April Time: 7.30pm Price: 10 This talk will explore how the Anglo-Saxons re-shaped earlier traditions about Alban to make him into the first martyr of the English. This talk will cover archaeology and literature, focusing especially on the work of the Northumbrian monkhistorian Bede.
