8 Dedication 900 St Albans Cathedral stands on the hillside where Alban, Britain s first saint, was buried over 1700 years ago. Over the centuries there have been many churches here, one replacing another - the church you visit today was built by the Normans between 1077 and 1115 as one of England s greatest abbeys is therefore a very special year for us, marking the 900th anniversary of the building s splendid ceremony of completion and dedication. A series of Dedication 900 events will celebrate our monastic past and our present life as a parish church and cathedral. New Statues on the Nave Screen 2015 will see the installation, dedication and blessing of new, unique statues of Christian martyrs on the Nave screen. An accompanying exhibition explores the process behind their fascinating creation from the initial designs to their handpainted finish. Check website for exhibition dates. The Alban Pilgrimage On Saturday 20th June we welcome two significant church leaders: Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby will attend and preach at the Eucharist, and the Archbishop of Rouen, Mgr Jean-Charles Descubes, will preach at Evensong. See opposite for details. Special Lectures In the spring the Cathedral Study Centre is running a lecture series reflecting on martyrs in our own time. These will focus on martyrs featured in the new statues on the nave screen.
