Bishop David Walkowiak will celebrate Mass at 6:30 pm in the Church, with a reception immediately following in the Parish Life Center Gym. All are welcome. St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church Seventeenth Sunday of Ordinary Time July 29th, 2018 Year B New Missal for Weekend Masses Father and the Finance Council have tasked me to research and recommend a permanent missal for use at weekend Mass. We currently use a subscription missalette, which needs to be replaced and re-purchased every year. The reasons for this were to eliminate monetary and paper waste and to increase the number of missals available in the church. After I gathered information, I presented it to the Finance Council and a missal was chosen. However, shortly after this decision, a publisher reached out to me, asking me to preview a new missal that hadn t yet been published. The missal is called Word of the Lord. It is published by International Liturgy Publications (ILP). A few highlights of the book are: Price: $15 (All other missals were at least $20) Size of font: Enlarged type is easy to read Order and Clarity: The three year cycle of readings is organized by year (A, B, C). Included are two sewn-in ribbons to keep place from week to week. The 400 missals will cost $6,000. We invite you to sponsor a missal in your name, or in honor of someone else or a charity. A beautiful bookplate will be placed on the inside with your name and the person you wish to honor. A book sponsorship costs $15. After its first publishing in September, I will have samples for people to view, but you may sponsor before that by visiting the Parish Office or stopping by a table in the back of church after the Aug 14 and 15 Masses in honor of the Assumption. Thank you. Emily
2 ST. MARY MAGDALEN PARISH First Friday Eucharistic Adoration On August 3rd we will have Exposition starting after the 8 am Mass and closing with Reposition at 6:30 p.m. Please consider the benefits of spending one hour in prayer with our Lord with the Blessed Sacrament on the Altar. Sign up form is in the Gathering Area. THANK YOU to everyone who came to our Parish Festival to enjoy delicious food, share fun times with good company and to celebrate our Parish s Patron Feast, St. Mary Magdalen. I appreciate all the hard work of the Festival Committee and wonderful help of countless volunteers. Hopefully, you had a fabulous time. If you have not been to this event before, please make a note on your calendar and reserve this date in July for your family and friends to come next year. It is going to be July 19th through the 21st. I also am grateful for your votes in an effort to have my latest book, Living For a Higher Purpose have a chance to be made into a mini-movie through Cine-Books. There are 46 more days for you to vote. This project, with enough votes to bring it to fruition, will make Living for a Higher Purpose available in a very powerful way to see, listen and read. It will be available nationwide. This is a time when we need to have good materials out there for the public to choose from. There can only be one vote per address so it is very important that we get the word out and ask friends and family, near and far, to vote. Thank You. Fr. With your contribution, you reach thousands through support of priestly vocations, Catholic education, cultural ministries, Catholic charities, catechist training and diocesan-wide communications. Anything raised in excess of our assessment is returned to the parish. Help support our seminarians and priests - Bishop Walkowiak wants your feedback! The Diocese of Grand Rapids will be conducting a feasibility study throughout July and August, and Bishop Walkowiak would like to hear from you. The study will gather feedback on a potential diocesan-wide capital campaign to support our seminarians and priests. A high level of responses from Catholics throughout West Michigan is needed to aid the bishop in making an informed decision on whether to move forward. Potential campaign goals include investing in the education of our growing number of seminarians, supporting specialized education for our priests, and funding the Priest Retirement Fund. The Steier Group, a Catholic development and fundraising firm, has been hired to conduct the study. A final recommendation on the viability of the campaign will be made in the early fall. Visit dioceseofgrandrapids.org for additional details on how you can participate. Stay tuned to the bulletin throughout the study for regular updates. 5 July June 29, 24, 2018 THANK YOU FROM OUR FESTIVAL COMMITTEE In sports, a very good team can have a bad day or not be as inspired as an average team they are scheduled to play. Chances are this top-rated team has a good chance of losing. Many of our festivals have similar scenarios. As a Committee member, the evening before the event I see a depressing forecast for the morning and the better part of the next day. Then try to get some sleep. As 4:30 a.m. arrives, it becomes hectic switching channels looking for the most optimistic weather forcast. The concern is not about the effort in planning and set up. It is more that many will be encouraged to stay away due to weather not cooperating. As early arrivals to the church parking lot, the weather begins to get worse. (Now don t get the idea that I m trying to make a movie out of this!) Steadily, familiar cars arrive. These are the inspired volunteers representing numerous ministries in our parish. Sleeping in was not an option for them; they are also very dedicated. In the rain they set up signs, install tent walls, direct traffic, unload vendors cars, and make and serve breakfast. And they do it with a smile. Then later in the evening, it s time to rest a little and repeat it all over the next day. Aren t we blessed to have a festival with all these volunteers? Aren t we blessed to have such a diverse, caring, giving, dedicated, and faithful parish family. Well this team is already planning for next season. Tryouts are always open The Seventeenth The Nativity Sunday of in John Ordinary the Baptist, Time, Year B THIS WEEK IN THE PARISH Monday, July 30, 2018 Wednesday, August 1, :00 pm Leaders of Elementary Retreat Meeting 7:00 pm.
