2 ST MARY MAGDALEN PARISH PASTORAL COLUMN November 2015 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, During World Youth Day 2013, Pope Francis said, The measure of greatness of a society is found in the way it treats those most in need. Through his words and ac ons, Pope Francis con nues to draw our a en on back to the Gospel message concerning care of the poor and our responsibility toward them. The Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) responds by addressing the root causes of poverty in the United States. November 22 has been designated as the CCHD na onal collec on in our parishes. This collec on is the primary source of funding for the CCHD s an -poverty grants and educa on programs by giving a hand up, rather than a handout. CCHD helps people living in poverty join together to iden fy problems, make decisions, and find solu ons to improve their lives and neighborhoods. Of the CCHD funds collected in our parishes, 25 percent is retained by our diocese to help fund local an -poverty projects. Through your generosity in 2014 four programs in West Michigan received grants. One such outreach is the Salva on Army s Congrega onal Partnership Program. Using the rapid rehousing model, this program assists homeless families to obtain long-term stable housing pairing them with local church congrega ons. Another is Catholic Chari es West Michigan s Pregnancy Support Services which offers help and support to women throughout their pregnancies. CCHD funded organiza ons that address poverty issues in a variety of areas including housing, educa on, neighborhood improvement, and criminal jus ce reform. One such organiza on, Ex-prisoners and Prisoners Organizing for Community Advancement (EPOCA), works to change the future for men and women returning to society a er incarcera on. Since incep on, EPOCA has steadily grown in membership, influence, and vision. Today, its diverse team works with allies to win legisla ve victories that improve the lives of families around the country. The CCHD collec on offers new hope to those living in poverty throughout the United States. May our experience of God s love con nue to open our heart to those in need and move us to ac on. Thank you for your con nued support of this important outreach of the Church. For more informa on about the CCHD collec on and the groups it funds, please visit Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend David J. 3 November 22, 2015 OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST, KING OF THE UNIVERSE THIS ARTICLE IS BEING RESUBMITTED FOR A BETTER VIEW OF THE PIE CHART: The chart you see below is an illustration of how the parish budget is allocated. We divide the operations of the parish into six functions: Worship, Faith Formation, Christian Service, Administration, Social, and Maintenance & Utilities. Here is a brief overview of what these areas cover. Worship There is a lot of effort that goes into providing worship that is meaningful and uplifting, including the music, the worship environment (also known as Liturgical decor), altar supplies, and worship aids (such as missalettes and hymnals). Faith Formation A lot of times, the first thing we think of when we hear Faith Formation is the religious education of the faith. While the classes fall into that category, they are only a part of what the budget includes. Materials for the spiritual preparation for receipt of the sacraments (Baptism, Reconciliation, Eucharist, Confirmation and Matrimony), as well as supplies and expenses that go along with the celebration of them are part of Faith Formation. Youth Ministry (including the annual Mission Trip), Continuing Adult Faith Formation programs, and parish retreats for our youth and adults are also a vital part of Faith Formation, as is the literature available in the back of church, the Lighthouse kiosk, and your subscription to Faith Magazine. Christian Service This is the charitable activity of the church, from which donations are made and assistance is given to those in need. Included in these activities are the Holiday Food Baskets, sponsorship of the monthly food trucks and support for our sister parish in Haiti. Also funding for our programs for homebound parishioners and our funeral ministry (liturgy planning aids and luncheons) and the parish tuition support for those attending Catholic schools comes from this area. Administration Administrative is kind of the bad word for charitable organizations, but these expenses comprise the guts and glue of how we operate and make the other ministries function smoothly. The administrative function sets the direction for the parish as a whole, and provides support services to do that, such as office personnel, insurance, supplies, postage, printing, and technology. Social This is where our parish enjoys fellowship with one another, through the many social activities throughout the year, from the simple (Sunday morning coffee & doughnuts) to the complex (Parish Festival). For all it entails, it really uses a small percentage of resources as so many of the events are self-sustaining. Maintenance & Utilities Maintenance & Utilities are the expenses involved in maintaining the appearance and functioning of our buildings and property, and the cost of providing heat, electricity and water. Budget /16 Total Budget = $740,927 Faith Formation, $182,820, 25% Administration, $180,182, 24% Social, $24,443 3% Maintainence & Utilities, $177,516, 24% Christian Service, $52,156,7% Worship, $123,810, 17%

4 CHRISTIAN SERVICE YOU ARE AWESOME! A Thank you goes to the 30 people who helped sort everything and load the van for John Knox Pantry. The past 2 weekends we had our annual Thanksgiving/ Christmas food drive. Take a look at how much you gave. A big Thank you also goes to the Men s Group for helping vendors unload and load their cars for the cra show last Saturday. Many were grateful for the help we provided. Also a Thank You for helping reset the Family Center that a ernoon so we could have coffee and donuts Sunday morning. Help is needed next Saturday, November 28 to decorate the church for Advent. We will begin around 10:00 a.m. Please take a tag from the Giving Tree and return the unwrapped gi s by December 14 at which me we will sort them. Spartan/Nash stores will be making a change to their Community Rewards program. Please turn in any UPC labels you may have by December 1. All you have to do is cut the UPC off the label and collect them in an envelope and drop it into the collec on basket at Mass with Spartan labels wri en on it and we will see they get processed.
