The Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) is the Church s response to assist and empower the poor and help them move toward independence and economic security. The annual CCHD collection funds programs which reach out to those living on the margins and provides them with a hand up, not a hand out. New this year Pope Francis has designated November 19 the World Day of the Poor, a day which calls us to encounter those on the margins and to work to put our faith into action. The Holy Father reminds us that there is a difference between the empty words so frequently on our lips and the concrete deeds against which we are called to measure ourselves. (World Day of the Poor message, no. 1) It is a reminder we hear in next week s first reading where A holy person uses the gifts she has been given, reaches out her hands to the poor, and extends her arms to the needy. (PRV 31:20) Next weekend, November 18-19, is the date of the annual CCHD collection in our parishes. This national collection is the primary source of funding for the CCHD's anti-poverty grants and education programs aimed at fostering a culture of life and hope in communities across the nation. Twenty-five percent of funds collected remain in our diocese to support the projects and programs of local organizations. Last year s collection raised nearly $34,000 and helped fund eight programs, including the Youth Empowerment Program (YEP!) through Community EnCompass in Muskegon and Salvation Army s Congregational Partnership which assists homeless families in obtaining long-term housing and creating a secure future. Your support of this collection makes a difference for people living in poverty in our diocese and across the United States. Please prayerfully consider how you can give to the CCHD this year. For more information about the collection and those it supports, visit Thank you for joining us to support families and communities living in poverty. Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend David J. Walkowiak Bishop of Grand Rapids

2 ST. MARY MAGDALEN PARISH ND ST SE, KENTWOOD, MICHIGAN MASS INTENTIONS Foundations of our Faith : What it means to pray Fostering, deepening and coming to understand our relationship with God. The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) defines prayer, first and foremost, not as a method, and not simply as an act of the human being, but in its fullness prayer is a vital and personal relationship with the living and true God (No. 2558). Prayer taught by Jesus Jesus answered with the Our Father (see Mt 6:515; Lk 11:2-4), which is the basis for all the praying that we do, since it is an acknowledgement of the relationship that exists between us and God. And the Our Father contains all the elements of prayer that we need in order to deepen the relationship. We begin by naming God as our Father and our Creator. We acknowledge him for who he is. We bless his holy name; we praise him. We petition him that his will, not ours, be done in our lives and that his kingdom, not ours, comes into its fullness. We also acknowledge him as the one who provides for us and sustains us in life and, at the same time, trust that he will provide by asking him to give us our daily sustenance. He is also the Father of our eternal life, so we ask for forgiveness of our sins and the strength to persevere through trials, and ultimately death. In short it is a prayer of confidence in God as the one who loves us and will bring us home to him. Another very important aspect to the Our Father is made clear by the first word: It s only three letters our but it is essential to understanding what our relationship with God entails. We do not say my Father, but our Father. In other words, even if we pray alone, we always approach God conscious of the truth that our relationship with him places us in relationship with each other. So neither do we ask for my daily bread or forgive my trespasses, but our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses. We do not expect to receive these gifts if we are not willing to share them with others. If God is good to us, then we are called to be good to each other. 3 November 12, 2017 NEWS TO SHARE Do you have an American flag that is tattered, torn or in disrepair? It may be time to replace it. Throughout the month of November, St. Mary Magdalen's Boy Scout Troop 275 will be collecting flags to be retired. A bin will be located at the entry doors to the Family Center to accept flags. All flags will be retired during a ceremony conducted by the Scouts. Thank you. THIRTY SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, YEAR A FAITH FORMATION/YOUTH MINISTRY Ladies Advent Night 2017 Tuesday, December 55h, 7-9 pm Ladies of the parish, this night is a wonderful opportunity for the women of the parish to gather to enjoy each other s company, share delicious treats and prepare their spirits for the season of Advent. Hostess and attendance information is available in the Gathering Area. There has been an overwhelming response to this event, so if you would like to join us but the tables are full, please contact Molly Wisdom at the Parish Office. For Pope Francis safe travels to Burma: Prayer to St. Christopher while Travelling Dear Saint Christopher, protect me today in all my travels along the road s way. Give your warning sign if danger is near so that I may stop while the path is clear. Be at my window and direct me through when the vision blurs From out of the blue. Carry me safely to my destined place, like you carried Christ in your close embrace. Amen. Thirty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time: As we move toward the conclusion of the church year, our liturgies make a decisive shift. Our readings focus more on the end-times, and we set aside this month of November as a time to remember our beloved dead. As we gather today to contemplate these things, let us pray that by our attitudes and actions, we will eagerly welcome the arrival of the Lord in our everyday lives and wisely prepare for his coming at the end of time.
