I D intentional discipleship 2018 serve learn pray tell read give For the Lord is the Spirit, and wherever the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom And the Lord who is the Spirit makes us more and more like him as we are transformed into his glorious image. (2 Corinthians ) /intentional-discipleship
introduction learn God, creation and chaos : learning from the book of Job leaders: John Bimson Saturday 24th March am 3.30pm In partnership with and hosted by the GOLD PROJECT (Bible Society), Stockton House, Stockton Avenue, Fleet, GU51 4NS 15. Resfreshments and a light lunch will be provided on the day The first goal of Transforming Church: Transforming Lives is making confident, prayerful disciples in daily life. The call of Jesus to follow me is a lifelong journey. But because life can often get in the way, we need to hear it too as a call to daily response, daily transformation into God s glorious image, as the Apostle Paul puts it. And so it s a call to confident and intentional discipleship. As it s been said, a call to train, and not simply try, to become like Christ. Bishop Andrew s 2018 Lent Challenge has introduced six action words: Learn, Pray, Tell, Read, Serve, Give. In a world where identity often drives us apart, such rhythms of life form us in our shared identity as people daily becoming more like Christ. This year s Intentional Discipleship (or ID ) programme takes these words and explores them one by one in sessions over the course of the year, in partnership with visiting contributors and other diocesan teams, for discipleship undergirds everything we do. The aim is to provide fresh insight and share practical resources as we work towards a Transforming Church: Transforming Lives. Matt Prior, Adult Discipleship Adviser Discipleship, Vocation and Ministry Team The Book of Job is perhaps the most tantalising book in the Old Testament. It poses disturbing questions about divine purpose and control, and about the place of human beings in God s world. Through his treatment of undeserved suffering the book s author reaches bold and Dr John Bimson taught Old Testament at Trinity College, Bristol, from 1981 until retiring in He developed a module on the Book of Job in the early 1980s, born out of his own fascination with the book. He continues to teach it at Trinity original insights into God s relationship with creation as a whole. Exploring the book s relevance for today, we find rich potential as a pastoral resource and some striking points of contact with the views of modern scientist-theologians. as a visiting lecturer. His other special interests include bird-watching and walking in the Cambrian Mountains in Mid-Wales, where he and his wife Maya run a B&B.
serve called to serve: stepping into the vision leaders: Nigel Drury and Tony Oakden Thursday 19th April. 7.45pm 9.45pm St Paul s Church, Oriental Road, Woking, GU22 7BD pray to work is to pray: the contemplative life leaders: Ian Cowley and Sarah Hutton Thursday 26th April. 9.30am 1.00pm St Nicolas Church, Bury Street, Guildford, GU2 4AW 5 donation on the day 5 donation on the day Life is surely all about relationships. We sometimes speak of our relationship with God as a vertical element and our relationships with others as being on a horizontal plane: in this way we convey a picture of the cross of Christ. This workshop explores Christian community engagement as an holistic outworking of who we are in Christ. How can we be more fully set free to serve: to cross boundaries, break moulds and change perceptions, to make ourselves vulnerable and effective in our contact with others in our neighbourhoods? Ideal for those wrestling with a local vision for TC:TL goal 6! Life for many of us in this part of the world is busy. How then can we learn to be still and to pray ceaselessly (1 Thess. 5.17), not only when we are on retreat, but when we face the seemingly endless demands of everyday life and work? In this morning, Ian will help us explore how to push back against busyness, becoming a contemplative minister (whatever our calling) and learning to live in the present moment. about the leaders: about the leaders: Tony Oakden is the Church and Community Adviser for the Diocese of Guildford. He has a wealth of practical experience with Social Services both as a qualified social worker and manager as well as of setting up and running projects. He can assist parishes in engaging with their local communities. Nigel Drury is Parish and Community Engagement Adviser for the Diocese of Guildford. He served as a missionary in Southern Africa from 1987 to 2010 working in poor communities and networking with a wide range of national and international agencies, including serving organisations in the HIV and AIDS sector. Ian Cowley is an Anglican priest who has served in parish ministry in South Africa, Sheffield, Cambridge and Peterborough. From 2008 to 2016 Ian was Co-ordinator of Spirituality and Vocations in the Diocese of Salisbury. He is author of four books, including The Contemplative Minister (2015). He has recently retired from full time ministry and continues to write and teach. Sarah Hutton is the Spiritual Growth Facilitator for the Diocese of Guildford..
tell beacon event 2018 Sunday 20th May. 4.00pm 8.00pm. Save the date more information to follow! Guildford Cathedral FREE tell talking Jesus Jens Mankel Wednesday, 20th June. 7.45pm 9.45pm. The Merrow Parish Centre, St John s Church, 222 Epsom Road, GU4 7AA FREE Thy Kingdom Come is a global movement of prayer, which invites Christians around the world to pray between Ascension and Pentecost for more people to come to know Jesus Christ. What started out as an invitation from the Archbishops of Canterbury and York in 2016 to the Church of England has grown into an international and ecumenical call to prayer. The focus for this prayer lies at the heart of our diocesan vision: to increase believers as we grow in devotion and discipleship (goals 1 & 2). All parishes, schools and chaplaincies are encouraged to commit to special prayer through this period, which culminates with a Pentecost Beacon Event at our Cathedral. Jesus asked his first disciples to go and make disciples. But telling others about Jesus can be daunting, especially if it feels as if no one is really asking. Life in twenty-first century Britain, with its postmodern struggles of fluid identity and multiplicity of personal truths, seems to pose a challenge to the disciple-making call of Jesus. Yet such struggles are not new, and the Church faced similar challenges in the first century. In this follow-up session to Thy Kingdom Come, Jens Mankel takes a fresh look at talking Jesus today. Useful resources: thykingdomcome.global A video from Archbishop Justin with testimony on the transforming scope of prayer. An incredible range of ideas and resources for church, individual and family praying Sign up at thykingdomcome.global/#pledge2praycounter and track how the movement of prayer spreads around the globe. Jens Mankel is the Church Planting and Fresh Expressions Adviser for the Diocese of Guildford. Jens was pastor of one of the largest churches in Frankfurt for many years, a board member of Freikirchliches Gemeindewerk in Deutschland e.v. and has wide experience of thinking inside and outside the flocks! He holds a Master s degree in Pastoral Theology from Heythrop College.
give a journey of generosity Juliet Evans Wednesday 13th June. 10am 1.00pm read reading texts Julie Gittoes Wednesday 11th July. 7.45pm 9.45pm Holy Trinity Church, Church Road, Claygate, KT10 0JP Church House Guildford, 20 Alan Turing Road, Guildford, Surrey, GU2 7YF 5 donation on the day. A sandwich lunch will be provided 12 The Church of England s Stewardship & Resources team has been working with the global Generosity Path organisation to offer an opportunity to explore God s Word, watch stories of other inspirational givers, and ask God s Spirit to show us how to use the money that He s entrusted to us. This taster morning involves listening and learning together to think faithfully and biblically about generosity and about living the life that is truly life (1 Tim 6:19). Ideal for any involved in promoting generous giving in the life of the church. Lectio Divina is a practice of reading scripture in a Spirit-led attentive way: listening to the text as it is read aloud, followed by a time of silence out of which participants share a word or phrase which resonates with them or which attracts their attention. The group is then drawn into a reflective conversation about what God might be saying to us and our human condition. In this interactive session, Julie will facilitate a reflective engagement with texts drawing scripture into conversation with poetry and literature using Lectio Divina. How might such connections shape our discipleship and witness? Juliet Evans is the Stewardship Adviser for the Diocese of Guildford and has been in the role for just over 6 years. She enjoys working alongside parishes as they think more deeply about stewardship and generosity as vital discipleship issues. Canon Dr Julie Gittoes is a Residentiary Canon (Education) at Guildford Cathedral. She teaches and writes on Christian theology, particularly the nature of the church, marriage and the work of Evelyn Underhill; and she is researching a project on singleness and loneliness.

Through some read reading art (part 2) Julie Gittoes Wednesday 25th July am 1.00pm guided observations of paintings from varied eras and cultures, we will explore these works together. The session will begin by meeting in the front foyer of the Gallery and progress from there. The Lightbox Gallery, Chobham Road, Woking, GU21 4AA FREE, limited to 12 places An opportunity to engage with texts and images from contemporary culture, including film, music, magazines and advertising. How do these things shape our perceptions of what it is to be human? Do we find within them expressions of grace or questions of faith? How do we make connections between culture, discipleship and evangelism? An opportunity to visit the Lightbox in Woking to explore featured work from The Ingram Collection. This collection includes work by the major artists of the 20th century as well as emerging artists of the 21st century, including paintings, sculptures and installations. We will be able to explore the human condition - faith and belief, creativity and power, potential and fragility. Details to be notified nearer the time. about the leaders: Canon Dr Julie Gittoes is a Residentiary Canon (Education) at Guildford Cathedral.
