2 Pastors Column Dear family, This weekend we begin the Annual Catholic Appeal for 2018 in our parish. Again, we thank our parishioner, Mrs. Karin Wrasman, who is the Archdiocesan Director for the ACA, for sharing with us the importance of the ACA at each of the Masses this weekend. The Annual Catholic Appeal is to the Archdiocese as the Stewardship Program is to the parish: it is the major means of support for the work of the Archdiocese. So what do we receive from it? THE EDUCATION OF OUR SEMINARIANS! The training of new deacons nursing-home care for our retired priests chaplins for our hospitals chaplins for our jails and prisons support for our very poor rural parishes Newman Centers at our universities and colleges and all the other ministries of the Church that are not the responsibility of any one particular parish, but of the whole Archdiocese. I am so pleased that last year we made our ACA assessment. If we all do our part, we can make it again this year. Please respond by using the ACA card that was mailed to your home, or fill out the card that is in the pew this weekend. Thank you And many thanks for the almost $15,000 you donated for the care of our retired Filippini Sisters. May God reward your generosity! We want to thank Mrs. Rita Skinner, who for five years as served as Head Lector of our parish. Unfortunately, Rita's work schedule has changed, making it impossible for her to continue in this ministry, in which she has done such a wonderful job. Many thanks to Mrs. Irene El-Genk, who will be the new Head Lector in our parish This Monday, February 5, our Adult Bible Series "Preparing for a Transforming Lent" concludes with a teaching on "Your Life Support System!". No one can live the Christian life alone. We need to find ways of receiving and giving support in living our Christianity. Come discover how the Bible teaches us to have support in Christian living. Everyday Stewardship Sometimes we can feel like we are living the life of Job: everything is going wrong all at the same time. Everyone finds himself or herself in a valley once in awhile. How we got there is not nearly as important as how are we going to get out. Everyday stewards are called to be grateful for all things, large and small. It is easier to be grateful for obvious things like family, health, and life itself, than it is to look for the ordinary gifts in our life. When we cultivate a sense of wonder and thankfulness for the many little things in life we find ourselves more resilient in times of trial. We can look out our window and see all those gifts in creation. We can look around our home and see all the things people take too easily for granted. Imagine life without some of the simplest things like clothing, warmth, water, and furniture. There are people in this world that long for all of those things. But God has given them for your benefit and for you to share with others. Before Lent begins in a couple weeks, take the time to create a list of at least 10 things that you normally take for granted. Keep that list handy and maybe add to it from time-to-time. When life seems hard and that cloud seems to hang over our heads, bring out the list and let gratefulness lift you up and out of your plight so that once again you can be about your Father's work. --Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS 5

Lives have been saved each time 40 Days for Life has been held and many more can be saved when you come out to pray. This peaceful prayer vigil will be held from Feb 14 until March 25 at two locations in Albuquerque: Planned Parenthood s abortion mill at 701 San Mateo Blvd NE, between Lomas and Central (parking is available along Marquette on the west side of San Mateo), and at the late term abortion mill, Southwest Women s Options, at 522 Lomas Blvd (between I-25 and Edith on the South side of Lomas). Join the sidewalk counselors as a prayer partner and help save lives. The counselors are at Planned Parenthood on Tuesday and Friday from 8-11 AM and at the late term abortion mill on Wednesday and Thursday from 7-11 AM. St. Thomas Aquinas parishioners have been asked to pray at these locations on Friday 3/2/18 and Tuesday 3/20/18. GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE February 4, th Sunday in Ordinary Time For most of us, the dynamic between prayer and action is imperfect. Breakfast needs to be made and the kids dressed. Work demands our energy and additional responsibilities fill our evenings and weekends. Then there's the football game or a new TV series to stream. After all, don't we need to relax? We're all busy. But just imagine Jesus' situation in today's Gospel. He heals Peter's mother-in-law, drives out demons, and cures diseases late into the night. With very little sleep, he arises before dawn to capture some peace and quiet, only to find "those who were with him pursued him." How often do we feel pursued by the harried commitments, even when we try to seek rest? Perhaps we can learn something from the response of Jesus. Jesus models two key things: the essential nature of prayer and the essential call of vocation. "He went off to a deserted place, where he prayed." Despite inevitable exhaustion, Jesus prioritizes time with the Father. We might not have easy access to deserts and mountaintops, but today's Gospel challenges us to take intentional time set apart for God. We can designate a "prayer chair" in a corner of our home or leave a little earlier to pick our children up from school so we can snatch time in a nearby chapel. We can pray the rosary on our commute or take the dog for a long walk in silence. However, when the Apostles arrive, Jesus doesn't linger overlong in the deserted place or make an excuse for why he can't return with his friends. Jesus is true to his calling. He continues on in his state of life, serving the people nearest to him. Like Jesus, we are invited to set intentional time for communion with God so that we can be refreshed and empowered for our communion with others. 7
