2 Pastors Column Dear family, I know how busy we all are, getting ready for our Lord's Birth. Celebrate deeply, celebrate with joy, but keep your eyes fixed on the Birthday Boy! Christmas falls on a Monday this year, and when that happens, things get confusing. Here's the bottom line: you have to go to one Mass for the 4th Sunday of Advent, and another Mass for Christmas. You can't go to Mass only on Christmas Eve and get a "two-for-one" special! So - I've put this special schedule on the front of the bulletin. You have to attend one purple Mass and one red Mass. I know, it makes scheduling challenging (especially if you are a priest!), but it is a small sacrifice of love for all our Lord did for us We want to be spiritually preparing during this week. That is why we pray the Christmas Novena the nine days before Christmas at both the 9 am and 6 pm Masses. Make it if you can. Pray at home. How beautiful if we pray the joyful mysteries of the Rosary each day of the novena - especially if we pray them as a family. Also, all this week there will be confessions, with multiple priests present, from 8:30-9:30 am, and 5:30-7:00 pm. The most important thing we do to prepare for Christmas is make a good confession. Come early in the week! The last confessions before Christmas will be on Saturday, Dec. 23, from 5:30-7:00pm. There will be no confessions on December 24th (it's just impossible, with all the Sunday and Christmas Eve Masses.) I've been so happy with the excitement generated by our Advent Outreach project. To see all those yard-signs and bumper-stickers our there is so cool. They have people talking - about Jesus, about Christmas and its true meaning, about us, the Church (they didn't know there we so many of us!) We are going to have an amazing number of visitors at Mass this Christmas. Just like last year, we are going to give each one a book by Matthew Kelly which is an introduction to accepting Jesus and living the Christian life. I know that we are going to bring a lot of people to Jesus this Christmas. Of course, all of this is free, but that doesn't mean it's cheap. By the time it's done and over, I bet the Advent outreach project will cost - well, a lot of money! And none of it is budgeted! Our dear Business Manager, Michael Gonzales, is probably ready to have me committed. And the Finance Council will turn me over to the Inquisition! But I'm not worried. I think the Holy Spirit wanted us to make a little splash this Advent, to show our community that we Catholic Christians are here, and to remind people of the true meaning of Christmas. I think we are going to gain many souls for Christ. And what cost can we place on even one new soul we bring to Jesus? Money spent on evangelization isn't an expense - it's an investment. God will provide. Anyhow, it seeing the good news of Jesus this Advent shared so publicly brings joy to your heart, and if you think it brings joy to God's heart, think about this. What joy it would bring the infant Jesus if this Christmas you made an offering above and beyond you regular tithe. Can you imagine going to a birthday party - and, by the way, who's birthday is Christmas? It's not yours. It's Jesus' birthday! What are you giving the Birthday Boy for Christmas? Can you imagine going to a birthday party and everybody gives gifts to everybody else except the person whose birthday it is? What's wrong with this picture? (continued Pg. 3) 2
