2 Pastors Column My dear family, Today is the great feast of Pentecost, the day the Holy Spirit descended upon the disciples, the birthday of the Church, and the end of the Easter season. How we need to pray for a renewed outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon the Church today, that we might fulfill the work of Jesus in our own lives and bring souls to Him! We continue our spring Bible Study "You Make Me Crazy" - how the Bible teaches us to have sanity in our relationships! We have so many people attending this series, and I've been very moved at how many people have told me that this practical Biblical teaching is making a big difference in their lives. This week's topic is ESCAPING THE PEOPLE-PLEASER TRAP. What is this about? Few attitudes will cripple your life more than the fear of rejection and the need to try to please everyone. I'll be talking about "peer pressure" and the antidote to "approval addiction" with six Biblical truths to help us change the way we think. Monday, May 21, 7:00 pm - Fr. D'Arco Hall, a one-hour presentation. Everyone is welcome - and bring a friend! Tidings of great joy! I am so happy to announce that our parishioner, Mr. Tim Meurer, son of Dave and Jo Meurer, will be ordained a Deacon this Wednesday, May 23, at 10:00 am, at Santa Maria de la Paz Church in Santa Fe. Of course this is in preparation for his ordination to the Priesthood next year. We're so proud of the soon-to-be Rev. Mr. Meurer, and I ask you to pray for him and the other men being ordained deacons and priests this week. And, next Sunday, May 27, Deacon Tim will serve as deacon at the 9:00 am Mass and preach his maiden sermon! So come and give him moral support! Friends, it's time for our annual reminder. I know it's getting hot - but - that is never an excuse for dressing immodestly in church. The basic rule is very simple: you need to be covered from your neck to your knees, with no breaks in between. We should also always be clean and neat: no tee-shirts with vulgar things upon them. This is the minimum that I ask from everyone. I know this is not the 1950's, but I still think it is a very lovely thing to "dress up" for Sunday Mass (I remember the times when people talked about wearing their "Sunday Best" clothing) - it shows that we understand that the Mass, and the Lord's Day, are special occasions that deserve respect. It has nothing to do with wearing expensive clothes - it is about wearing special clothes. I remember in my first parish in Roy, there were two old brothers who everyday wore denim overalls with a flannel shirt. But on Sunday, when they came to Mass, they added a tie to their outfit! I thought this was charming - they were showing that Sunday Mass was special. Dressing up for Mass is nice. But at a minimum, we must be modest and respectful in our dress. Parents, I need your help in this. You need to teach your children how to dress for Mass. I really, really, really hate having to take a person aside to tell them they are not dressed appropriately for Mass and send them home to change. I hope a word to the wise is sufficient! Thank you for your cooperation in this matter. May our Lady pray that we all love modesty A few more words of tender wisdom: Today, I was feeling down because the results of a biopsy came back malignant. When I got home, I opened an that said "Thinking of you today. If you need me, I'm a phone call away." It was from a high school friend I hadn't seen in ten years. Today, I was traveling in Kenya and I met a refugee from Zimbabwe. He said he hadn't eaten anything in three days, and looked extremely skinny and unhealthy. Then my friend offered him the rest of the sandwich he was eating. The first thing the man said was, "We can share it." A blessed week, Msgr. Doug Raun 2
3 THIS WEEK MONDAY May 21st YOU MAKE ME CRAZY You Make Me Crazy is a 9-part series on surviving relationships God s way. Everyone has crazymakers in life, whether it s a boyfriend, girlfriend, spouse, boss or relative. This series will help bring sanity to your relationships, so you can do more than just coexist; you can connect. ESCAPING THE PEOPLE-PLEASER TRAP Few attitudes will cripple your life more than fear of rejection and the need to try to please everyone. Msgr. Raun looks at the subject of peer pressure and the antidote to approval addiction with six truths to help us change the way we think. 4 Liturgical News Steven Woodbury x105 Feast of Corpus Chris Procession and Benedic on in church Everyday Stewardship On this Pentecost Sunday, if you come to Mass at my parish you will see a sea of red all around. The choir, the lectors, the extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion, the people in the pews, and of course the celebrant and our deacon, will all be wearing red. We are one of those parishes that strive to reflect the color of the liturgy in our dress. It can be a sight to see. What we put on our bodies serves only as a reminder of what is really important during these liturgical celebrations. At Pentecost, it was the Spirit of God that filled those in the first Christian community. We wear red to call to mind that very Spirit, often depicted as a fire or flame. However, if we just use red as a reminder of the power of the Spirit without letting it change us, then our actions become merely sentimental. We are filled with the Holy Spirit through the sacraments of the Church. God touches us and enters into us in a profound way, just like in that upper room at Pentecost. That first powerful movement of the Spirit led to a Church that grew and flourished and remains alive today. What is the movement of the Spirit within calling you to do today? Do we allow God to move us and do great things through us? Red is a bold color to wear at any time. But our actions should be even bolder. --Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS P V : of Fa ma in your home, and to receive Her For Informa on please call Gerri Hoover at 892 Perpetual Eucharis c Adora on Tes monies ST. Vincent de Paul Today, as we celebrate Pentecost, the Holy Spirit wants to make us advocates of God's presence to bring new life to others, especially those who do not know the love of God in their lives. Your gift in the St. Vincent de Paul box for the needy will help the poor to believe in the mystery of God's love for them. 4
