Looking Unto Jesus - Our Example of How We Should Hate Sin Hebrews 12:2 - Lesson # 6 Introduction: A. Our subject this morning continues to look to Jesus as our perfect example - Hebrews 12:2. 1. In our study thus far we have looked at Jesus as our perfect example. a. As to how we are to respect and use Scripture b.as to how we are to forgive c. As to how we are to Love d.and as to how we are to Live with Humility. 2. In this mornings study we want to look at How Jesus Viewed Sin and how that we can learn from Him to have the same view of sin today. B. There are three basics views of sin that we need to firstly acknowledge: 1. The Lord s View of Sin. 2. Our View of Sin. 3. And Societies View of Sin. C. In order for us to understand Jesus view of Sin we are going to examine three areas of Christ s life: 1. Jesus attitude toward the sinner. 2. Jesus attitude toward sin. 3. Jesus did not allow society to determine His outlook of sin. II. Jesus attitude toward the sinner. A. It is important for us to not confuse the sinner with the Sin. The Lord hates the sin but his love, compassion and forgiveness for the sinner is very clear. 1. Woman At The Well John 4:7-26 a. John 4: A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, Give Me a drink. 8 For His disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.9 Then the woman of Samaria said to Him, How is it that You, being a Jew, ask a drink from me, a Samaritan woman? For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.10 Jesus answered and said to her, If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, Give Me a drink, you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water. 11 The woman said to Him, Sir, You have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep. Where then do You get that living water?12 Are You greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank from it himself, as well as his sons and his livestock? 13 Jesus answered and said to her, Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again,14 but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life. 15 The woman said to Him, Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come here to draw. 16 Jesus said to her, Go, call your husband, and come here. 17 The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said to her, You have well said, I have no husband, 18 for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; in that you spoke truly. 19 The woman said to Him, Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet.20 Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, and you Jews say that in Jerusalem is the place where one ought to worship. 21 Jesus said to her, Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming when you will neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, worship the Father.22 You worship what you do not know; we know what we worship, for salvation is of the Jews.23 But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship

Him.24 God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth. 25 The woman said to Him, I know that Messiah is coming (who is called Christ). When He comes, He will tell us all things. 26 Jesus said to her, I who speak to you am He. 2. Woman Taken In Adultery John 8:1-12 a. John 8: But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.2 Now early in the morning He came again into the temple, and all the people came to Him; and He sat down and taught them.3 Then the scribes and Pharisees brought to Him a woman caught in adultery. And when they had set her in the midst,4 they said to Him, Teacher, this woman was caught in adultery, in the very act.5 Now Moses, in the law, commanded us that such should be stoned. But what do You say? 6 This they said, testing Him, that they might have something of which to accuse Him. But Jesus stooped down and wrote on the ground with His finger, as though He did not hear.7 So when they continued asking Him, He raised Himself up and said to them, He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first. 8 And again He stooped down and wrote on the ground.9 Then those who heard it, being convicted by their conscience, went out one by one, beginning with the oldest even to the last. And Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.10 When Jesus had raised Himself up and saw no one but the woman, He said to her, Woman, where are those accusers of yours? Has no one condemned you? 11 She said, No one, Lord. And Jesus said to her, Neither do I condemn you; go and sin no more. 12 Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life. 3. Eating With Sinners Mat 9:9-13 a. Matthew 9: As Jesus passed on from there, He saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax office. And He said to him, Follow Me. So he arose and followed Him.10 Now it happened, as Jesus sat at the table in the house, that behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and sat down with Him and His disciples.11 And when the Pharisees saw it, they said to His disciples, Why does your Teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners? 12 When Jesus heard that, He said to them, Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.13 But go and learn what this means: I desire mercy and not sacrifice. For I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance. 4. Sinful Woman Anointing Jesus Feet Luke 7:36-50 a. Luke 7: Then one of the Pharisees asked Him to eat with him. And He went to the Pharisee s house, and sat down to eat.37 And behold, a woman in the city who was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at the table in the Pharisee s house, brought an alabaster flask of fragrant oil,38 and stood at His feet behind Him weeping; and she began to wash His feet with her tears, and wiped them with the hair of her head; and she kissed His feet and anointed them with the fragrant oil.39 Now when the Pharisee who had invited Him saw this, he spoke to himself, saying, This man, if He were a prophet, would know who and what manner of woman this is who is touching Him, for she is a sinner. 40 And Jesus answered and said to him, Simon, I have something to say to you. So he said, Teacher, say it. 41 There was a certain creditor who had two debtors. One owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty.42 And when they had nothing with which to repay, he freely forgave them both. Tell Me, therefore, which of them will love him more? 43 Simon answered and said, I suppose the one whom he forgave more. And He said to him, You have rightly judged. 44 Then He turned to the woman and said to Simon, Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave Me no water for My feet, but she has washed My feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head.45 You gave Me no kiss, but this woman has not ceased to kiss My feet since the time I came in.46 You did not anoint My head

with oil, but this woman has anointed My feet with fragrant oil.47 Therefore I say to you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven, for she loved much. But to whom little is forgiven, the same loves little. 48 Then He said to her, Your sins are forgiven. 49 And those who sat at the table with Him began to say to themselves, Who is this who even forgives sins? 50 Then He said to the woman, Your faith has saved you. Go in peace. 5. The Hypocritical Pharisees Mat 23 a. Matthew 23:1-6 - Then Jesus spoke to the multitudes and to His disciples,2 saying: The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses seat.3 Therefore whatever they tell you to observe, that observe and do, but do not do according to their works; for they say, and do not do.4 For they bind heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on men s shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.5 But all their works they do to be seen by men. They make their phylacteries broad and enlarge the borders of their garments.6 They love the best places at feasts, the best seats in the synagogues,... B. Our attitude towards the sinner should be of the same nature as Christ s! 1. Loving? - Mark 10:21; Luke 19:41 a. Mark 10:21 - Then Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, One thing you lack: Go your way, sell whatever you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, take up the cross, and follow Me. b.luke 19:41 - Now as He drew near, He saw the city and wept over it, 2. Merciful? Mat. 18:27; 11:28-30 a. Matthew 18:27 - Then the master of that servant was moved with compassion, released him, and forgave him the debt. b.matthew 11: Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.30 For My yoke is easy and My burden is light. 3. Patient? Mat. 18:10-22 a. Matthew 18: Take heed that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that in heaven their angels always see the face of My Father who is in heaven.11 For the Son of Man has come to save that which was lost.12 What do you think? If a man has a hundred sheep, and one of them goes astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine and go to the mountains to seek the one that is straying?13 And if he should find it, assuredly, I say to you, he rejoices more over that sheep than over the ninety-nine that did not go astray.14 Even so it is not the will of your Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones should perish. 15 Moreover if your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he hears you, you have gained your brother.16 But if he will not hear, take with you one or two more, that by the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established. 17 And if he refuses to hear them, tell it to the church. But if he refuses even to hear the church, let him be to you like a heathen and a tax collector.18 Assuredly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.19 Again I say to you that if two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven.20 For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them. 21 Then Peter came to Him and said, Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Up to seven times? 22 Jesus said to him, I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven. 4. Honest? Mat 19:16-24 a. Matthew 19: Now behold, one came and said to Him, Good Teacher, what good thing

shall I do that I may have eternal life? 17 So He said to him, Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God. But if you want to enter into life, keep the commandments. 18 He said to Him, Which ones? Jesus said, You shall not murder, You shall not commit adultery, You shall not steal, You shall not bear false witness, 19 Honor your father and your mother, and, You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 20 The young man said to Him, All these things I have kept from my youth. What do I still lack? 21 Jesus said to him, If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me. 22 But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions. 23 Then Jesus said to His disciples, Assuredly, I say to you that it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.24 And again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God. 5. Firm? John 8:11; Mat. 15:1-14; 23; Luke 13:3 a. John 8:11 - She said, No one, Lord. And Jesus said to her, Neither do I condemn you; go and sin no more. b.matthew 15:1-14,23 - Then the scribes and Pharisees who were from Jerusalem came to Jesus, saying,2 Why do Your disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat bread. 3 He answered and said to them, Why do you also transgress the commandment of God because of your tradition?4 For God commanded, saying, Honor your father and your mother ; and, He who curses father or mother, let him be put to death. 5 But you say, Whoever says to his father or mother, Whatever profit you might have received from me is a gift to God 6 then he need not honor his father or mother. Thus you have made the commandment of God of no effect by your tradition.7 Hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy about you, saying: 8 These people draw near to Me with their mouth, And honor Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me. 9 And in vain they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men. 10 When He had called the multitude to Himself, He said to them, Hear and understand:11 Not what goes into the mouth defiles a man; but what comes out of the mouth, this defiles a man. 12 Then His disciples came and said to Him, Do You know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this saying? 13 But He answered and said, Every plant which My heavenly Father has not planted will be uprooted.14 Let them alone. They are blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind leads the blind, both will fall into a ditch. c. Matt 15: 23- But He answered her not a word. And His disciples came and urged Him, saying, Send her away, for she cries out after us. 6. Zealous? John 2:14-17 a. John 2: And He found in the temple those who sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the moneychangers doing business.15 When He had made a whip of cords, He drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen, and poured out the changers money and overturned the tables.16 And He said to those who sold doves, Take these things away! Do not make My Father s house a house of merchandise! 17 Then His disciples remembered that it was written, Zeal for Your house has eaten Me up. III. Jesus attitude toward the Sin. A. Once again it is imperative that we see a vast difference between Christ attitude toward the sinner and the actual act of sin. 1. The scriptures say that He hated sin Heb 1:9; Rev 2:15 a. Hebrews 1:9 - You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness; Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You With the oil of gladness more than Your companions.

b.revelation 2:15 - Thus you also have those who hold the doctrine of the Nicolaitans, which thing I hate. 2. Demonstrated in action John 2:13-22; Mat 21:12-13 a. John 2: Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.14 And He found in the temple those who sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the moneychangers doing business.15 When He had made a whip of cords, He drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen, and poured out the changers money and overturned the tables.16 And He said to those who sold doves, Take these things away! Do not make My Father s house a house of merchandise! 17 Then His disciples remembered that it was written, Zeal for Your house has eaten Me up. 18 So the Jews answered and said to Him, What sign do You show to us, since You do these things? 19 Jesus answered and said to them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up. 20 Then the Jews said, It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will You raise it up in three days? 21 But He was speaking of the temple of His body.22 Therefore, when He had risen from the dead, His disciples remembered that He had said this to them; and they believed the Scripture and the word which Jesus had said. 3. Taught that DRASTIC steps should be taken to avoid sin - Mark 9:43-48 a. Mark 9: If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter into life maimed, rather than having two hands, to go to hell, into the fire that shall never be quenched 44 where Their worm does not die, And the fire is not quenched. 45 And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life lame, rather than having two feet, to be cast into hell, into the fire that shall never be quenched 46 where Their worm does not die, And the fire is not quenched. 47 And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye, rather than having two eyes, to be cast into hell fire 48 where Their worm does not die, And the fire is not quenched. 4. Went to the cross!! Mat 26:28; Gal. 1:4; Rom 8:3 a. Matthew 26:28 - For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. b.galatians 1:4 - who gave Himself for our sins, that He might deliver us from this present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, c. Romans 8:3 - For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh, B. Jesus attitude was not one of how close can I get to sin without being involved in the sin. C. This is also true for us today we must have the same hatred for sin as Christ. 1. The only way that we can know if we have this same hatred is in our actions. 2. What are the ways that we are to take dramatic steps to avoid sin? a. Flee from sin, Fight the good fight of faith and Follow after Christ. 3. We need to die to the flesh and the desires of the flesh. IV. Jesus did not allow society to influence Him in his view of Sin. A. Today we live in a society of Tolerance. 1. We are condemned if we don t conform to the norm - Romans 12:2 a. Romans 12:2 - And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. B. But think for just a minute how Jesus did not conform to the norm in his society! 1. Marriage was not seen as a permanent act - yet Jesus says that this was not so from the foundation

of the world - adultery and sin is the result. - Study Matthew Serving God had become a set of rigid laws: a. Christ showed that the Sabbath was made for man and not the other way round. b.the washing of hands was traditional but the keeping of God s Laws were foundational to being pleasing to Him. - Matthew 15 V. Conclusion: A. Jesus is our perfect example on how to hate sin and love the sinner. 1. Ur view of Sin should be like Christ s the question is your view of sin as strong as Christ s? B. So once again let us not confuse the attitude we must have towards the sinner with the attitude we must have towards the SIN! 1. Sin is serious and we should view it as such. 2. Your sins can be forgiven - no matter how bad they are - if you are willing to surrender your heart to Christ in complete obedience to every command. 3. It is also important for us to note that sin can be overcome. a. There is nothing that says I just have to sin - we have a way of escape if we are only willing to look for it - 1 Cor. 10:12-14 (1) 1 Corinthians 10: Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall.13 No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it. 14 Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry...
