1 26 February st Sunday of Lent 26 Лютого 2012 LENT: A Time to Shoulder Our Christian Responsibilities Vatican (VIS) - During his general audience this week, the Holy Father dedicated his catechesisto the subject of Len, the period of forty days leading up to the Holy Week, memorial of the passion, death and resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Benedict XVI reminded the 7,500 pilgrims gathered in the Paul VI Hall that, in the early days of the Church, Lent was a time in which catechumens began their journey of faith and conversion prior to receiving Baptism. Later, all the faithful were invited to participate in this period of spiritual renewal. Thus "the participation of the whole community in the various stages of the Lenten journey underlines an important dimension of Christian spirituality: the fact that redemption is available not just for the few, but FOR EVERYONE, thanks to Christ's death and resurrection". "The time leading up to Easter is a time of 'metanoia', a time of CHANGE and PENANCE, a time which identifies our human lives and our entire history as a process of conversion, which begins to move now in order to meet the Lord at the end of time". The Church calls this period "Quadragesima" [ Chotyrydesiatnytsia in Ukrainian], a period of forty days which has precise references in Holy Scripture. Indeed, "forty is the symbolic number with which the Old and New Testaments represent the most important moments of the People of God's experience of faith. It is a figure which expresses a time of expectation, purification, return to the Lord, awareness that God is faithful to His promises;... a time within which we must make our choice, shoulder our responsibilities without further delay. It is a time for mature decisions". Noah spent FORTY days in the Ark during the Flood, then had to wait FORTY days more before he could return to dry land. Moses spent FORTY days on Mount Sinai to collect the Commandments. The Jewish People spent FORTYyears wandering in the desert, then enjoyed FORTY years of peace under the government of the Judges. The inhabitants of Niniveh made FORTY days penance to obtain God's forgiveness. The reigns of Saul, David and Solomon, the first kings of Israel, lasted FORTY years each. Continued on Page 5... 4 Our AGM Annual All-Parish Meeting is coming up next month. The Search is on for parishioners willing try their hand at serving the parish family by accepting an office in the parish structure. Basically all offices can be considered open, but since some offices (like Chairperson of the Parish Pastoral Council, or Chairperson of the Finance Committee) allow for a second or even third 1-year term, these office-holders usually are asked to stay on for another term. However, some of our present officers terms are either up or they have asked to pass the torch on to someone else. So We are looking for active parishioners who would like to serve for the following year in any parish position, but especially: Pastoral Council Secretary, Chairperson of the Property Management Committee, Pastoral Council Member at Large, and Parish Auditor (some background in financial matters). Please come forward. If you haven t been contacted and asked by the nominating committee, it certainly isn t because you are not considered as a possible candidate (it s the voters at the AGM that will decide), it is only because they never thought of it. We need you! The AGM is fast approaching and we are wanting to have all of the many reports ready to be printed and handed out in advance so that we can all review them and come to the Meeting prepared to plan for a brighter, more successful future in living our calling as a Christian community participating in the mission of Christ in today s world. It would be very appropriate and helpful if all the organizations and groups that fundraise and disburse money within under the parish umbrella would also submit a financial report along with their activities report. Our Study Days will begin with an introduction to the place of the Scriptures in the Church s life, and move on to reflect on some difficult passages. How are we to understand the Book of Revelation? What is to be made of Old Testament texts where God appears vindictive? These, and many more questions will be discussed in the context of Eastern Christianity s distinctive approach to biblical interpretation. We have confirmed three plenary speakers who will be presenting this theme from different viewpoints. The plenary speakers are Dr. Edith Humphrey (Professor, Pittsburgh Theological Seminary and laywoman of the Antiochian Orthodox Church), Father Andrew Onuferko (holder of the Wynnyckyj Teaching and Research Fellowship at the Sheptytsky Institute in Saint Paul University and Ukrainian Catholic priest) and Father Andrea Spatafora (Dean of the Faculty of Theology at Saint Paul University and Roman Catholic priest). 5 ...Continued from Page 1 In the New Testament, Jesus spent FORTY days praying in the wilderness before beginning His public life and, following the resurrection, He spent FORTY days instructing His disciples before ascending to heaven. The liturgy of Lent, the Pope explained, "has the aim of facilitating our journey of spiritual renewal in the light of this long biblical experience. Above all, it helps us to imitate Jesus Who, in the forty days He spent in the wilderness, taught us to overcome temptation through the Word of God.... Jesus went into the wilderness in order to be in profound contact with the Father. This was a constant aspect of Christ's earthly life. He always sought out moments of solitude to pray to His Father and abide in intimate and exclusive communion with Him, before retuning among mankind. But in the 'wilderness'... Jesus was beset by temptation and the seduction of the Evil One, who suggested a messianic path, a path which was far from God's plans because it involved power, success and dominion, not love and the total gift of self on the Cross". Benedict XVI went on to suggest that the Church herself is a pilgrim in the "wilderness" of the world and history. This wilderness is made up of "the aridity and poverty of words, life and values, of secularism and the culture of materialism which enclose people within a worldly horizon and detach them from any reference to transcendence. In such an atmosphere the sky above us is dark, because veiled with clouds of selfishness, misunderstanding and deceit. Nonetheless, even for the Church today, the wilderness can become a period of grace, because we have the certainty that even from the hardest rock God can cause the living water to gush forth, water which quenches thirst and restores strength". "During Lent", said the Holy Father in conclusion, "may we discover fresh courage to accept situations of difficulty, affliction and suffering with patience and faith, aware that, from the darkness, THE LORD WILL CAUSE A NEW DAY TO SHINE FORTH. 6 Why Roman Catholics Celebrate Ash Wednesday? For Roman Catholics the season of Lent begins with ashes on their foreheads. What is symbolized by this smudging? Perhaps the heart understands better than the head because more people go to church on Ash Wednesday than on any other day of the year, including Christmas. The queues to receive the ashes in many churches are endless. Why? Why are the ashes so popular? Their popularity, I suspect, comes from the fact that, as a symbol, they are blunt, archetypal and speak the language of the soul. Something inside each of us knows exactly why we take the ashes: "Dust thou art and into dust thou shalt return!" No doctor of metaphysics need explain this. It is no accident that ashes have been a major symbol in all religions. To put on ashes, to sit in ashes, is to say publicly and to yourself that you are reflective, in a penitential mode, that you are not in a season of celebration, that you are grieving some of the things you have done and lost, that some important work is going on silently inside you, and that you are, metaphorically and really, in the cinders of a dead fire, waiting for a fuller day in your life. All of this has deep roots. There is something innate to the human soul that knows that, every so often, one must make a journey of descent, be smudged, lose one's lustre, and wait while the ashes do their work. All ancient traditions abound with stories of having to sit in the ashes. We all know, for example, the story of Cinderella. This is a centuries-old, wisdom-tale that speaks about the value of ashes. The name, Cinderella, itself already says most of it. Literally it means: "the young girl who sits in the cinders." Moreover, as the tale makes plain, before the glass slipper is placed on her foot, before the beautiful gown, ball, dance and marriage, there must first be a period of being humbled. In the story of Cinderella, there is a theology of Lent. Native American traditions too have always had an important place for ashes. In some aboriginal communities, occasionally someone would spend time in the ashes. For reasons they didn't have to explain, they would become silent, sit just off the fire in the ashes, eat sparingly, not socialize, not go outside, not wash, not go to bed with the others, but simply sit in the cinders, like Cinderella. Everyone knew that this was a natural thing, that ashes do an important work in the soul, and that sooner or later that person would return to his or her regular life and be better for having spent time in the ashes. The Church taps into this deep well of wisdom when it puts ashes on our foreheads at the beginning of Lent. Lent is a season for each of us to sit in the ashes, to spend our time, like Cinderella, working and siƫng among the cinders of the fire - grieving what we've done wrong, renouncing the dance, refraining from the banquet, refusing to do business as usual, waiting while some silent growth takes place within us, and simply being still so that the ashes can do their work in us. - Fr.
