From the Rector Ash Wednesday and Valentine s day on the very same day a real challenge! How do we square that equation? In my mind it is a rather splendid combination, though it requires that we look beyond heart shaped balloons and romance. Valentine s Day has more serious background than that of romantic love. St Valentine was a priest in third century Rome, who was beheaded on the 14 th of February 269 AD. His crime was that he, against the law of the Emperor Claudius II, conducted marriages. Young couples, deeply in love, came to him in secret and were joined in holy matrimony. The Emperor had banned marriages as he preferred unmarried soldiers in his army. Valentine was found out and caught. During his imprisonment, Valentine became acquainted with the daughter of a prison guard and, shortly before his execution, Valentine wrote her a letter and signed it: Love from Your Valentine. That was the first Valentine card. Lent is about love. Lent reminds us that God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son. Lent is about grasping this and how that affects the way we relate to others. That is the Valentine aspect. The purpose of the season of Lent is to prepare us from God s great declaration of love that took place on Golgotha. Hence, Valentine s day this year reminds us not only about love between people but also about the divine love of God. The season of Lent is a time when many of us decide to do or not do something for the duration of forty days and nights. As part of our spiritual preparation helping us to understand God s great love declaration, we do something physical as well. Many ask themselves: What shall I give up or what shall I take on? The aim is to make us a better person. In addition to give up something that we really like, the Church s Ministry of Healing encourages us in our Lenten self-discipline and self-restraint to focus on and address our negative behaviour. It is so easy to adopt a negative frame of mind. Here are their suggestions to help think positively:

Give up complaining focus on gratitude (Phil 2:14-15, 1 Thess 5:18) Give up bitterness turn to forgiveness (Eph 4:31-32) Give up worry - trust in God (Matt 6:25,33) Give up discouragement be full of hope (Deut 31:8, Is 40:31) Give up hatred return good for evil (1 John 2:9, Luke 6:27) Give up anger be more patient (Matt 5:22, Prov 15:18) Give up gossiping control your tongue (Ps 34:1, Prov 21:23) So, in addition to what we normally would do as part of our Lenten discipline, why not address something in our behaviour that makes us negative and focus on the many positive things in life and remember that the glass is half-full, rather than half-empty. Almighty and everlasting God, you hate nothing that you have made and forgive the sins of all those who are penitent: Create and make in us new and contrite hearts that we, worthily lamenting our sins and acknowledging our wretchedness, may receive from you, the God of all mercy, perfect remission and forgiveness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen, (Collect for Ash Wednesday) May God bless you on our Lenten journey! Articles for the March edition of The Lion Magazine should be with the Parish office by Wednesday 14 February ld be with the Parish Office by Wednesday 18ctober

Amen. C H R I S T I A N BURIAL Funerals were held for parishioners of St Mark s on: 27 th of December 2017 Mary Ann Adair 17 th of January 2018 David McCracken Jesus said: I am the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. (John 11:25-26)

From the Select Vestry Thank you to all our parishioners that financially support St Mark s Parish. Your contributions ensure that we can offer a variety of activities, provide worship services, maintain our properties and pay our staff. Thank you. Over the last few months some parishioners have changed their way of giving to the parish from envelopes to Standing Order. That is of great help to us as a parish. If you support us through Standing Order and still feel you want to put something on the plate, plastic tokens are now available from the Church Wardens. This year we plan two big events in the parish. First a concert with Festival Brass and soloist and a chamber choir of young ladies on Friday the 13th of April. It promises to be an excellent musical experience. In September we look forward to a Flower Festival in St Mark s Church. It is entitled: The Seed is Sown: A celebration of C. S. Lewis and Faith in Harvest tide. So please pencil in the weekend of 28 th to 30 th of September for this wonderful evening. Revision of the Register of Vestry Members The Register of General Vestrypersons is now open and will close Sunday 18 th of February Any parishioner who is not registered and who is over 18 years of age and has paid into Parish Funds in an identifiable way should register. Please see the Churchwardens for relevant forms. Formal Revision will take place at a review meeting on Monday the 19 th of February 2018 at 7.15 p.m. in the Rectory.

Fundraising for the Sound System Cost of New System 31, Fundraising as at , Cost to St Mark s 18, Pie Chart to show Fundraising for the Installation of the new sound system in St Mark's Fundraising as at Messy Church Get ready for Messy Church. It is a world- wide phenomenon and is now coming to St Mark s. It is a way for children to learn about the Christian faith and engage in church through creativity, hospitality and celebration. It is hoped to run five Messy Church events per year. Our first meeting will be a special Valentine-themed messy church on 10 th of February 2018 from 2.00 p.m. to 3.00 p.m. in the Heyn Hall. Registration will be open from 1.45 p.m. as we start promptly at 2.00 p.m. Activities include heart-mending, pancake hunt, pancake race and ninja pancakes. There will also be entertainment. Messy Church always finishes with a party meal as fellowship is very important to the Messy community. It is intended for primary and kindergarten children. Messy Church even has its own web page accessed through the organisations section of the church website

Help is required in administration, crafts, games, catering and puppet skills (YF take note). Anyone interested in helping should contact Chris the Curate. St Mark s Singing Club From Tanya, June, Jacqui and Norah Our little group of enthusiastic primary school singers meets on Thursdays p.m. in the Parlour where we have a lot of fun together and some treats too! Annie loves the songs from Moana, Arthur and Josh like Our God is a great big God, Olivia enjoys songs from Frozen and Jayden's favourite is Every Blade of Grass. If you love singing come and join us for a taster! (Parents/ grandparents welcome.) Confirmation 2018 St Mark s is hosting a confirmation service on Sunday the 8 th of April at 6.30 p.m. A class has begun for young people and they meet in the Wardrobe on Sunday nights. If there is any other young person (secondary school age) who wants to join the class, please speak to Revd Chris St John as soon as possible. A confirmation service in St Mark s also offers an opportunity for any adult who is not yet confirmed to be so. The preparation for an adult is agreed between the clergy and the candidate. At the moment, we are aware of some adults who are considering confirmation. Please contact the Rector or the Curate if you would like to explore confirmation.

St Mark s Flower Guild Margaret Grahame has been very organised and supportive to the Flower Guild in performing her duties by completing the flower rota each month to ensure that the church has flowers in the Sanctuary and Side Chapel. After five years of service. Margaret will be handing over her duties to Hanna Nelson. We will miss Margaret who supported the Flower Guild when we decorate the Church for Easter Harvest and Christmas and contacted the families in a friendly manner each month. It is therefore an appropriate time to review the decorating of the church week by week and with this in mind, we would like to ask families wishing to continue with their donations to provide flowers for the sanctuary and side chapel to re-apply, and for new parishioners to be given an opportunity to make a donation. If the sanctuary is booked for flowed it may be possible to use the side chapel. The symbolic language of flowers has been recognized for centuries in many countries throughout Europe and Asia. Mythologies, folklore, sonnets, and plays of the ancient Greeks, Romans, Egyptians, and Chinese are peppered with flower and plant symbolism and for good reason. Nearly every sentiment imaginable can be expressed with flowers. The signification of flowers, is the memory-knowledge of truth. Like a flower he comes forth and withers. He also flees like a shadow and does not remain. Job 14:2. The grass is withered, the flower faded, the people is grass; but the word of our God abideth forever (Isa. 40:7, 8). We will endeavour to accommodate as many families as possible. Please contact: Johann Henderson Tel: Hannah Nelson Tel:

Book Club From Norman Meharry Almost everyone in the Reading Group enjoyed our January choice, Never Let Me Go (2005) by the Nobel Prize winner, Kazuo Ishiguro. Don t be bothered by his name. He is more English than you. He wrote The Remains of the Day which, if you haven t read it, you ve surely seen the movie. Never Let Me Go however is a slow ignition horror story that the reader gathers to be so along the way, written in an easy deceiving style that makes the shocks all the greater when they come. And they do, big time. I daren t detail the story in case you haven t read it but may do. Suffice to say here that this contemporary-set chilling tale never lets its reader go long after they ve closed it and sat back expecting to recover. Why would our reading group read such a book I hear you (not) asking? It s not overtly a book about faith or directly religious in theme. But can you imagine vulnerable people around you considered soulless and thus ripe for society s exploitation? Anyway, the chatter and counter chatter in 4 Sydenham Avenue on that Tuesday evening was proof enough that this book had detonated in the souls gathered round decent coffee and tea with nice things to eat. P.S.: Remember December? Then we d read Gilead by Marilynne Robinson. Another good read as decided by the group in its majority - smallest town America and one man s narration cum rumination on family, community and faith. It was a big seller of 2004 and seemingly rightly so because we plan to read its follow up later this year. Happy New Year. Programme 6 th of February: Wounds, by Fergal Keane. A family story of a murder, blood and betrayal that tore an Irish town apart and causes men to be silent still. The book club meets at 8.00 p.m. in St Mark s Rectory, 4 Sydenham Avenue. All readers warmly welcomed. For more information, please contact the Rector.

Men s Group From Revd Chris The Men s group will meet again at 7.30 p.m. on Tuesday the 13 th of February Our speaker will be the local Architect Jonny Baird. Mr Baird will speak on his work on conservation and environmental heritage and give us a better idea of some of the changes that are occurring in our urban landscape. This should be an engaging evening, and everyone is encouraged to attend. Tea and coffee as usual will be served with an opportunity for fellowship and meeting friends. Mothers Union From Angela Kerr The branch of St Mark s Mothers Union was delighted that three new members were enrolled during the Service of Morning Prayer on Sunday 14 th January. A warm welcome is extended to Lesley Donaldson, Glynis Smeltzer and Margaret Steed. A very varied programme has been planned for the coming year. This started off with the preparation of emergency washbags for adults admitted to hospital at short notice, particularly men! This is one of the outreaches of Mothers Union, one of the others being providing support for the women and children who are in safe refuges. The Bangor refuge was delighted to receive the gifts that the Sunday School children and parishioners brought to Church on Christmas Day. Our Curate, Chris, will speak at our meeting on February 21 st when he will share his journey of faith with us. In his limited free time, he enjoys Jujitsu, Judo, Russian Sambo wrestling so who knows what he has in store for us! Maybe we should come in our sportswear!!

Mothering Sunday falls on Sunday 11 th of March. As a thank you to all mothers we will be preparing rosebud gifts on Saturday 10 th of March in the Parlour from a.m. Evergreens From Lorna Symmons and Joan Eakin We were pleased to welcome a group from the Royal Scottish Country Dancing Society to our January meeting. The ladies and gentlemen danced several reels, impressing us by making intricate sequences look very easy. Well done to the ladies who were brave enough to join in. Thanks also to our Parish Scottish Dancing leaders, John and Carol Campbell, for helping to arrange an entertaining afternoon. Our next meeting is on St Valentine's Day, February 14 th, at 2.30 pm. We are looking forward to having our Curate Revd Chris St John, join us along with his guitar for another musical afternoon. We hope you can join us. Welcome.

St Mark s Parishioners on Tour Our next tour is on: Thursday February 22 nd. A short guided tour of Bangor Abbey followed by a light lunch in Bangor Heritage Centre. There will be a sign-up sheet at the back of the Church in early February for those interested in joining us. We will travel by car leaving the Heyn Hall at a.m. All ideas for future tours will be gratefully received. Contact Angela Kerr or donang10@btinternet.com

Social Committee Plans are now well under way for a Musical Evening presented by Festival Brass on Friday 13 th of April at 7.30p.m. Noel Thompson has kindly agreed to act as Master of Ceremonies. Ceara Grehan, one of Ireland s leading theatrical and opera singers, will be performing. Ceara first trained at Belfast School of Music and also with Mary Hammond, one of London s top West End vocal coaches. Cruinniu,a female chamber choir based in Arklow Co. Wicklow will also perform at this concert. This group was formed in 2011 under the direction of Rosari Kinselia A.R.I.A.M. who has a history steeped in music from piano teaching to choir conducting. This group performs 2,3,4 and 5-part pieces in a variety of genres, from sacred to traditional, popular to classical. The proceeds from this concert will go towards the Ovarian Cancer Charity, Somerton Hospice and St Mark s sound system. Please keep the date free and make it widely known amongst your friends. Tickets costing 12 will be available shortly, from the Parish office or at the back of the church. There will be some catering requirements for the band and artistes prior to the concert. Please contact the Churchwardens if you could help with this. Thank you.

Visit to Nepal with CMSI November 2017 From Lesley and Philip Burton Setting off on the 9 th of November we arrived in Kathmandu after 24 hours travel and were warmly greeted by Bikash Adhikari, Director of Sundar Dhoka (SD). The drive through the city to our Guest House was our first experience of how chaotic Kathmandu traffic is along with the extremely dusty roads. It was the first of many different experiences we would rapidly adjust to during our visit. Services of Worship are held on Saturdays at SD Church. The congregation is usually seated on rugs on the concrete floor, with wheelchair users parked around the perimeter of the hall. As a concession to our team, chairs were placed among the wheelchairs for our use, as we would have struggled to get off the floor after the 3-hour long service! The length of the service was a big surprise, the first hour spent in very lively praise worship, then preaching and more singing, dancing and clapping in praise of God. The service is so different to our own, but we could see how the congregation was so full of joy to be in Church and to meet with the visitors from Ireland. Additionally, we had the privilege to attend a church service at the Leprosy Colony near Khokana, a medieval Newari town 5 km out of Kathmandu. We spent many evenings in Pharkilo Ghar Residential Home for Disable Children, where approximately 16 children live. Many have amputated legs, some were in wheelchairs and some were blind. We were able to assist with homework, Lesley carried out physiotherapy sessions and we joined in their play and devotional time every evening. Through the links of SD Church we visited other organisations; HRDC Hospital & Rehabilitation Centre for Disabled Children;

NPCS Nutrition Programme & Consultancy Services, with Deirdre Zimmerman Dietician & Nutritionist, we learned how their programmes impart knowledge on the use of readily available foods to improve people s diet; HDCS Human Development & Community Services, where Executive Director Dr Sharma hosted a wonderful presentation on their work to improve access to, and the quality of, health services for impoverished people in rural areas and also providing education facilities for learning disabled children. The mission visit to Nepal was such a rewarding and enlightening experience showing us how God s work is being delivered under very difficult and challenging circumstance. Lesley and Philip will be give presentation of their experiences in Nepal on Monday the 26 th of February at 7.30 p.m. in the Parlour. Welcome

Week of Prayer for Christian Unity: That all may be free This year St Mark s Parish hosted this ecumenical event. It was lovely to welcome our brothers and sisters in Christ from the other churches in Belmont District of Churches. This year the council marked this event in a slightly different manner. We felt is was important to engage with our local community, the needs in east Belfast. Hence, we decided to support the Larder at St Christopher s. We did that through a book sale of second hand Christian books and a pop-up coffee bar in the Heyn Hall. The Christian bookshop the Bookwell, took the initiative to bring books that were sold (buyers paid what they thought the book was worth!) in aid of the ministry of the Larder. St Mark s parish organised the refreshments. The morning raised 950! On the Sunday, members from the different churches in the area gathered for Evensong in St Mark s. Our choir together with a couple of visiting singers sang a beautiful and moving service and as the part of the service there was a conversation about how to be spiritual and physically free and what inhibits us who live in this part of the world. The collection to the Larder amounted to 543. After the service we had an opportunity to chat with each other as the Church Wardens and the Verger had organised refreshments for us. A most memorable weekend. Thank you for your support. Visitors at the Participants at Evensong

The Larder The Larder is a food bank operating out of St Christopher s, 70 Mersey Street, BT4 1EX. They do not require information on background or circumstances the referral card is all that is needed. (Available from: East Belfast Mission, East Belfast Independent Advice Centre or St Vincent de Paul). The Larder is an informal environment where a chat, coffee, tea, toast, sometimes lunch etc can all be part of the experience. We appreciate that coming to the Larder can be difficult enough, so we try hard to make it as simple as possible for everyone. The Larder has about twenty clients per week (and these can represent many more people in the background). This requires a fair amount of food, which comes from individuals, churches and businesses. In a very real way, all we are doing is organising the sharing of the food that is already in the community those who have a wee bit extra sharing it with those who find themselves in a bit of an emergency. What we are doing Ongoing support in the provision of food Providing a place for spiritual and material support Meeting a need for fellowship How can you help? 10 Contributes to running costs of The Larder e.g. carrier bags 20 Helps to keep St Christopher s warm and dry 50 Enables us to provide a week s provision of fresh produce (bread, milk etc) Thank you for your support!

A new Hymn for the Presentation of Christ in the Temple From Billy Adair February 2 nd is the celebration of The Presentation of Christ in the Temple, a weekday service seldom recognised, unless when transferred to the nearest Sunday. But it is important, and has an ancient history in Judaism. When a Jewish boy was born he was involved in three ceremonies: 1) Circumcision, in which he received his name. This took place eight days after the birth and was so important that it could be performed on the Sabbath, if that happened to be the eighth day. 2) The Redemption of the First-born. According to the Law every first-born male was sacred to the Lord (This also applied to cattle!). Apparently, no sooner than thirty-one days after the birth, the sum of five shekels (about fifteen old shillings) paid to the priests, bought back the boy from God. 3) The Purification after Childbirth. After childbirth, if it was a boy the mother was unclean for forty days, but if it was a girl, for eighty days. During this time she could live normally, but could not enter the Temple or take part in a religious ceremony. When this time was over she was to bring the child to the Temple, with a Thanksgiving offering of a lamb and a Sin offering of a young pigeon. For poor folk this was expensive so in Leviticus 12 v 8 anyone who could not afford a lamb could substitute a second pigeon and this was called The Offering of the Poor. That was the offering Mary brought. When the Hymnal Committee were putting together Church Hymnal five, they decided that to properly cover the Presentation a couple of new hymns should be added and one they chose was written on 6 th of October 1880 by John Ellerton for The Church of England Hymnbook. The hymn was Hail to the Lord who comes and it was rejected! Ellerton wrote to the Editor agreeing it was very bad. A year later (1881) it was published in The Children s Hymn Book after being revised by Bishop William

Walsham How, Ashton Oxenden and John Ellerton himself. It now reads well but it is little used. It is No. 191 in Church Hymnal five its first appearance in a Church of Ireland Hymnal. Verse 1 Hail to the Lord who comes, Comes to His Temple gate! Not with his angel host Nor in His Kingly state, No shouts proclaim Him nigh, No crowds His coming wait; Verse 2 but borne upon the Throne of Mary s gentle breast, Watched by her duteous love, In her fond arms at rest; This to his Father s house He comes, the heavenly guest. Verse 3 There Joseph at Her side In reverent wonder stands; And filled with holy joy, Old Simeon in his hands Takes up the promised Child, The glory of all lands. Verse 4 Hail to the great First-born Whose ransome price they pay! The Son before all worlds The Child of man today, That He might ransome us Who still in bondage lay. These four verses tell the story of the Visit to the Temple in Jerusalem which from Nazareth involved quite a journey. The mention of Joseph is

interesting in the background as usual and Old Simeon, who had the promised privilege of not only seeing his God, but actually holding Him in his arms. Just think of it he held God in his arms, and was ready to depart in peace. (See Nunc Dimittis) Verse 5 O Light of all the earth Thy children wait for Thee! Come to thy temple here, That we from sin set free, Before thy Father s face May all presented be. We are all waiting, but as Christians we hope one day to arrive in Heaven and like Simeon see Jesus face to face. Perhaps He will take us in His arms, and whisper Welcome Home.

Parish Chef From Angela Kerr The gentle art of gastronomy is a friendly one. It hurdles the Language barrier, makes friends among civilised people and warms the heart. a wise quote from Samuel Chamberlain. Watercress, potato and pea soup This is a vegetarian and gluten free recipe. 1 large leek sliced (don t use dark green leaves) 2 teaspoons light olive oil 300g of floury potatoes diced 200g of defrosted peas 150g watercress 1 litre vegetable stock juice from ½ lemon Soften the sliced leek in oil in a large saucepan for 2 minutes. Add a pinch of salt. Cover and stew gently for a further 5 minutes. Uncover and add diced potatoes. Cook stirring for 5 minutes. Add stock and bring to the boil. Simmer for 15minutes and then add the peas and cook for further 3 minutes. Stir in most of the watercress and season with black pepper. Place in blender when cooled and add lemon juice. If it is too thick add a little water. Serve with a few sprigs of watercress as garnish. Soup is a lot like a family. Each ingredient enhances the others, each batch has its own characteristics and it needs time to simmer to reach full flavour (quote Marge Kennedy). Haddock with orange and honey 500g of haddock fillets (M&S frozen) defrost 250g of fine green beans trimmed 1 tablespoon clear honey Zest of ½ orange 1 tablespoon wholegrain mustard 500g of baby potatoes

Blanch the beans in boiling water for 1 minute. Cool and drain. Cut 4 pieces of Bacofoil baking parchment (Tesco) and divide beans between them. Place fillets of fish on top. Mix zest, honey and mustard together and spread over fish. Fold over the parchment to make 4 parcels. Bake on a baking tray for about 20 minutes at 180 deg C. Meanwhile boil baby potatoes and serve with the fish. Haddock is a mild tasting fish that is lean white and flaky when cooked. It delivers more than great taste! It is full of essential nutrients. Rhubarb and Apple crumble Donal Skehan an Irish television presenter specialising in food programmes takes a crumble pudding up another level! 500g cooking apples 500g rhubarb 1 tablespoon lemon juice 4 tablespoons light brown sugar 15g butter Topping 200g butter (firm and cut into small pieces) 150g plain flour 150g jumbo oats 175g soft brown sugar Make the topping by rubbing together butter, flour, oats and sugar. Set aside. Chop rhubarb into 1 inch lengths and put in a large bowl. Peel core and Chop apples into 1 inch chunks and add to rhubarb. Mix in sugar and lemon juice. Melt 15g of butter in a saucepan. Add the fruit and cook gently for 5 minutes, stirring to prevent burning. Put the fruit into a large baking dish and add crumble mixture. Cook at 180 deg C or 170 deg C fan for about 40 minutes. Serve warm with cream or ice-cream. ** You may also put orange zest from one orange into the fruit mixture. The crumble topping can have the oats replaced with 100g ground almonds and 50g chopped hazelnuts** Food for the body is not enough there must be food for the soul. This is a quote from Dorothy Day. It seems rather apt in that the Study Group are beginning a 6-week series on Soul Keeping
