2 ST. ELIZABETH CATHOLIC PARISH 2 MARCH 8, 2015 FROM OUR PASTOR Dear Parishioners of St. James & St. Elizabeth, This past week we celebrated the Feast of St. Casimir. Many people came to the Mass in which we were honored to have Fr. McDermott, the former pastor of St. Casimir, reminisce with us about the Saint's day as well as some of the history of our parish. Following the Mass we all enjoyed the pot luck dinner. As always there were so many wonderful things to eat. Thank you to everyone who helped to make this day a nice celebration in the midst of Lent. Speaking of St. Casimir, I have had many people ask me what is happening at the cemetery under his patronage. Thanks to a generous gift by Steve Gulan, brush is being removed to make room for a new fence. Also, many of the large trees at the cemetery were Ash trees and needed to come down. As always we are striving for excellence in caring for those who have died. Finally continue to keep those who will be entering the Church this year at Easter in prayer. Being Catholic is a difficult thing to do in our culture right now. We must always give thanks to God when more people continue to be inspired to follow Christ in His Church. Sincerely, Fr. Sean Granger Jesus answered and said to her, "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again; but whoever drinks the water I shall give will never thirst; the water I shall give will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life." - Jn 4:13-14 OUR CATHOLIC FAITH APOLOGETICS To defend and explain the teachings, beliefs, and practices of the Catholic Church Q - Did Jesus tell us not to eat meat on Fridays during Lent, or is this practice something the Church created? A- Many non-catholics don t understand the Catholic practice of abstaining from meat during Fridays of Lent. Even some Catholics wonder about it. How does not eating meat one day a week help us grow closer to Jesus or become holier? It is true that Jesus did not explicitly teach in Scripture that we should abstain from meat on Fridays during Lent, but we need to remember that He did speak about the good that can come from fasting. In Matthew 4:21, we read about how Jesus fasted for forty days and nights in preparation for His public ministry, and He gives the apostles instructions on how to fast for the sake of God s kingdom (Mt 6:16-18). He also established the Church to guide His people in the Christian life. Jesus gave the apostles and their successors, the bishops the authority to bind and loose (see Mt 16:18), that is, to establish discipline and practices for the spiritual well-being of His followers. Since we all suffer the effects of original sin and often commit personal sins, we need to be purified from our self will so we can do God s will. This is the process of conversion. Both the Bible and the Fathers of the Church teach that there are three sure-fire ways our conversion to Christ can be strengthened: prayer, fasting, and almsgiving (see CCC 1434). It is not that there is anything morally wrong with eating meat. But following a spiritual discipline, like fasting, can have a powerful effect of purification on us personally and on the Church as an entity. The Church s call for us to abstain from meat is a wonderful way that we as a truly Catholic and universal community recognize our need for Christ, repent of our sins, and go deeper in our conversions together. If we deliberately ignore the Church s disciplinary laws such as those relating to fasting and abstinence from meat this is really a rejection of the Church and its authority, which is a grave sin. Jesus said to His apostles, He who hears you, hears me; whoever rejects you, rejects me (Lk 10:16). So if we rebel against the teaching authority of the Church, we are rebelling against Jesus Himself. Always be ready to give a defense to anyone who asks you for the hope that is in you, but do it with gentleness and respect (1 Peter 3:15-16) Did Jesus Have A Last Name? - Ascension Press -

Carmel are hosting a pilgrimage to Our Lady of Guadalupe Shrine in La Crosse, WI, on Friday, Sept. 18 to Saturday, Sept. 19, Both parishioners and nonparishioners are invited to join us, including children. Registration fee per person is $230 (private hotel room) or $185 (if you choose to share a room) and covers motor coach bus transportation, hotel room, tour donation, Friday dinner, all Saturday meals, bus and meal gratuities.
