2 PARISH OFFICE ADMINISTRATOR In late September we announced that Mrs. Julia Muirhead would succeed Joan as Parish Office Administrator with a handover period. This has now been completed and Joan has retired with effect from 1 st November. As a parish we are very grateful to Joan for all the efforts which she has put in over the past 6 years including developing the Hall booking/doubling the net income, putting the office administration on a firm footing and liaising with our caretaker to establish our management of the buildings and site. On a personal level I have very much enjoyed working with Joan. Through her initiative she has very willingly taken far more from my shoulders than I had imagined possible. She has very kindly offered to work on a voluntary basis to archive our records. This is badly needed and will be a great benefit to us. I am sure that you would all like to join me in thanking Joan and wishing her a long and very happy retirement, with more time for all her other interests. Fr. Tom DONATION We have received a donation for the church of 160 for which we are very grateful. I do not know who the donor was. CATHOLICISM DVD EVENINGS Starting on Thursday 12 th November, we will be holding 10 weekly screenings of the Catholicism series of DVDs: A stimulating and compelling exploration of the spiritual, moral and intellectual riches of the Catholic world. Screenings followed by discussion will be held on Thursday evenings until 11 th February, with a suitable break for the Christmas period pm in the Church Hall. SVP MASS FOR THE DEAD The annual Mass for the Dead will be on Sunday, 15 th November at 3.00pm. Its purpose is to commemorate parishioners and relatives and friends of parishioners who have died during the past year. It will be followed by refreshments in the hall. All are welcome. GALA COFFEE MORNING Joan and Ed s Gala Christmas Coffee Morning will take place on Sunday, 22 nd November, after the morning Masses. We would appreciate gifts of all kinds for the stall, especially Christmas items and NEW children s toys, books, games and puzzles. Offers of small cakes and pies gratefully received. Please leave gifts in the Repository or the Sacristy. Offers of help to Joan ( ). Many Thanks. THE CHRISTMAS SHOP Now open every Sunday. Get your Advent Candles and calendars early! DIOCESAN MAILING We receive one mailing each month from the diocese which includes adverts for courses, lectures, talks etc. With modern communications everyone for miles around can the diocese with details of events but there is no way we can advertise all of them in our Newsletter. INDULGENCES God always forgives sins if we are truly sorry (mortal sins require Sacramental Confession). Indulgences are a reduction of time spent in purgatory for our good works and the prayers of the Saints. A plenary indulgence, applicable only to the holy souls, may be gained once in any church either on All Souls Day, 2 nd November, on the preceding or following Sunday or on the Feast of All Saints, on the usual conditions, viz a visit to a church, where the Our Father and Creed are recited, sacramental confession, Holy Communion and prayer for the Holy Father s intention. Those who visit a cemetery between 1 st and 8 th November and pray for the faithful departed, may obtain a plenary indulgence, applicable to the holy souls (and at other times a partial indulgence). A confession can cover several indulgences but there must be prayers and Holy Communion for each one. Abi Palmer at Kew Neighbourhood Association would like to hear from you and others who would be prepared to be interviewed to help KNA to understand the needs of Kew residents. See Notice Board in the small porch for contact details. ST. RICHARD REYNOLDS COLLEGE seeks a subject leader for Science, to commence in January For further information see the poster in the Narthex or check their website. VOLUNTEER AT AUSTIN FORUM Austin Forum is a project of the Augustinians, based in Fulham Palace Road. They are seeking volunteers to help those who do not speak English very fluently. Among other things this could involve teaching, conversation, preparing CVs, translating and formfilling. If you might be able to help, see the notice in the porch and contact Gabriella Notarianni at gabriella@austin-forum. WORLD YOUTH DAY 2016, KRAKOW, POLAND Are you aged 18-30? Would you like to go as part of the Southwark Group? See notice on the board. No doubt the Parish would help fundraise towards the cost if necessary. (16-17 year olds can only go as part of a school or parish group). See Fr Tom if you are interested. HYMN BOOK REFS Gloria 489 Holy, Holy 490 Lamb of God 495 CHILDREN READERS We have a Children s Mass at 9.30am every second Sunday of the month. If your child would like be a reader for these Masses, please contact Jenny Evans (jennycevans@hotmail.com). Ideally children should be in Year 2 or above. Jenny will arrange a practice before they first read at Mass. INTERESTED IN JOINING THE CHURCH OR FINDING OUT MORE? Do you know anyone who is interested in finding out more about the Catholic Church and what it means to be a Catholic? Are you a parishioner, perhaps married to a Catholic, who worships with us but is not in full communion? If the answer to either of these is yes then contact Barbara Wood ( ) or Fr. Tom ( ) for information on what is involved in becoming a full member of the Catholic Church. Our new course begins in November, but it might be possible to make other arrangements to suit individual requirements. ARE YOU OVER 65 AND LIVING ALONE?

4 Website PARISH DATA BASE If you are new to the Parish please introduce yourselves to both Fr Tom and Canon John and complete and return a data base form. Existing Parishioners There are a surprising number of you who have not yet completed a data base form and for whom we have only old information, or at worst no information at all. I would be grateful if you could help us to bring our records up to date. If you are unsure as to whether you have completed a form, phone Joan in the Office ( ) who will be pleased to check for you KNIGHTS of ST. COLUMBA When did we see you thirsty? (Matthew 25: 31-46). Let us think of the people thirsting for God s word. What can we do to help them? The Knights of St. Columba were formed on the principles of Charity, Unity and Fraternity, with the most important being Charity which is at the heart of all our actions. Therefore we invite more Catholic men to become involved in the Lay Apostolate and Evangelising by contacting the Knights of St. Columba, 75 Hillington Road South, Glasgow, G52 2AE; tel

5 LENTEN LUNCHES These will be held every Thursday during Lent in the crypt of St. Elizabeth s Church in the Vineyard, 12.30pm until 2.30pm. Home-made soup, with bread and cheese, coffee/tea and cake per person ( 4.50 concessions); this year in aid of the charity Missing People. IMPORTANT FOR ALL TO READ! NOISE AT SUNDAY MASS The noise at the end of 9.30 Mass last Sunday was unacceptably high. It is wonderful to see people of all ages at Mass and especially the children. I would not want that to change and I thank you all for the efforts which you make and for the tolerance you show to each other. I have mentioned specifically the 9.30am Mass, because that is where there are the most children, But this highlights a challenge which will always be with us and which can also affect other Masses. Obviously we cannot expect children to be quiet all the time but there must be an age at which they can be trained to improve. I have no doubt that a certain amount of discipline is required at nursery school. As you know, I advise all parents with young children to sit in the centre aisles and show the children what is happening on the altar. If you sit in the side aisles the temptation is to use the aisles and chapels as play spaces, which they are definitely not. We adults must also give a good example to the children. Ideally we should not talk in church, including before and after Mass, as other people may be trying to pray. (I am often guilty in that respect myself). I have also received some complaints about adults chatting while queuing to receive Holy Communion! Clearly, at this point we should be concentrating upon the Sacrament we are about to receive. Of course, I appreciate that there may be some noise and talking if you are bringing children forward for a blessing but this should be kept to a minimum.. LENT IS A GOOD TIME FOR US ALL TO WORK ON THIS. NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS! The new Church Year starts today. May I suggest the following resolutions? 1.Arrive in church in time for the start of Mass (For children s Liturgy participants, this means arriving in the Hall before 9.30am). I am aware of the difficulties of getting children ready, but please do your best. 2.Join in the responses loudly. (EG Amen, And with your spirit ). At Mass the priest leads the celebration In which we all participate. The responses are important for that reason. 3.Join in the singing at the 9.30 and 11.00am Masses. Don t worry about your voice. God gave it to you and loves to hear it. ST. ELIZABETH S SCHOOL: ADMISSIONS The Admission arrangements for St. Elizabeth s Catholic Primary School 2015/16 have been revised to meet the requirements of the Schools Admission Code following a ruling by the Office of Schools Admissions Adjudicator. Attendance at St. Elizabeth s Catholic Nursery is no longer an over-subscription criterion in the Admissions Arrangements. Visit the School Website to view these in full RCIA Do you know anyone who is interested in finding out more about the Catholic Church and what it means to be a Catholic? Are you a parishioner, perhaps married to a Catholic, who worships with us but is not in full communion? If the answer to either of these is yes, then contact Barbara Wood ( ) or Fr Tom ( ) for information on what is involved in becoming a full member of the Catholic Church. PARISH HALL WORKING GROUP UPDATE Oona has received 3 kind offers of participation in the Hall Working Group and 3 substantial written or verbal representations from others who are very interested but unable to join the working group. She will be in touch with those who have come forward during the summer and will convene a meeting in September. It is not too late to contact Oona on if you have ideas to share or would be able to join the group. PARISH DATABASE

6 There are still so many people not registered on the Parish Data Base. (Several parents asking Father Tom about schools are missing, for example) It is really important that everyone completes a form so that we can maintain a correct and up-todate record of parishioners. There are forms at the back of the church. Please return completed forms to the boxes on the tables after Mass or to the Parish Office at other times GIFT AID DONORS If you donate by envelope and would like to switch to standing order, it is easy to arrange. Just speak to Teresa. ( / teresa.chance@hotmail.co.uk) Many thanks to everyone who Gift Aids their contribution to the parish. MASS INTENTIONS Of all the Masses available for your intentions, the most popularly requested one is the 11.00am Mass on Sunday. Please try to give AT LEAST two months written notice if you would like this Mass offered on your behalf. Many thanks. THE GOOD COUNSEL NETWORK The Good Counsel Network exists to promote the values and sanctity of human life, upholding the rights of the unborn. They organise Days of Prayer for Life; train tutors and speakers for pro-life issues; counsel and support the hundreds of young women choosing to give birth, sometimes in the face of great opposition All of this requires finance. Please visit their website for information of how you can help with a donation. There is also a notice on the board in the Narthex. OFFERTORY BY STANDING ORDER You will notice that we are now publishing the Offertory amount collected by Standing Order. We have about 30 parishioners who contribute in this way either weekly, monthly or annually. If you would like to do the same (perhaps it would be more convenient?) please contact the Parish office. You can either set up a Standing Order on line yourself in which case please ask for the Parish Account details, or ask for a Standing Order form which you can fill in and give to your Bank to process. Many thanks WHAT CAN I DO FOR LENT? Prayer, Fasting & Almsgiving is the Lenten tradition. We fast by eating less on Fridays, but giving up something (eg chocolate or alcohol) is also Fasting. Extra prayer is very important; try one of these- *Say some additional prayers each day. *Go to weekday Mass if you can. *Buy a booklet to guide reflection. Bible Alive and My Day by Day are on sale in the porch *Choose one of the Gospels and read it during Lent. *Study the Sunday readings before coming to Mass (the next week s readings are listed in the newsletter). *Buy and read Evangelii Gaudium by Pope Francis. *Come to the Stations of the Cross (5.00pm, Sundays) *Receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation. CHURCH CLEANING The church is cleaned on Thursday each week, between and 11.00am. Anyone who can come along to help will be most welcome. Extra cleaners always needed. ONLY SOFT TOYS, PLEASE! Once again as I do from time to time I appeal to parents to bring only soft toys for their children to play with in church. Please do not bring hard toys wood, metal or plastic as these get banged against the benches and because of the acoustics in church the noise is amplified. Plastic bricks are a particular problem because as well as being banged, they clatter loudly when dropped. Your children can beat the brains out of their favourite teddy or soft toy without making much noise. Can I also remind you that for children from 3 upwards, we provide worksheets each week with puzzles and things to colour; and there is a special bookcase full of books which you can borrow during Mass. Many thanks Father Tom
