3 CLOWN/HELPING HANDS MINISTRY Our ministry to the homeless and needy depends a great deal on the generosity of our volunteers. Several volunteers regularly go beyond what they are asked to do. A few weeks ago for instance, we were part of the Lyndhurst parade. It was a rainy, gloomy day, and many thought the parade would be canceled. Ten of our volunteers participated in the parade, several dressed as clowns and the other in Helping Hands t-shirts (and raincoats). We distributed candy and brought some sunshine and smiles to those who came out to watch the parade. When our group approached the reviewing stand, the announcer said, Here comes the Saint Paschal Clown and Helping Hands Ministry. They bring laughter and joy to so many, but more importantly, they feed the needy in Cleveland and even in our own area. Let s give them a great cheer and thank them for all they do for so many. After the parade, we picked up blankets from Saint Clare s Blanket Day. Special thanks to our volunteers who participated in the parade. Even though it was a parade, God used us to evangelize and show others how Catholics reach out and care for those less fortunate. Thank you to our volunteers who make this a ministry of love, especially to those who feel unloved. GOD IS GOOD ALL THE TIME. ALL TH TIME GOD IS GOOD. GIFTS PROGRAM DONATIONS GIFTS (GIVING ( IS FUNDAMENTAL TO SUCCESS!) Receiving the GIFTS Annual Appeal making up the difference between the amount we request for tuition versus the actual cost for each student. We thank these folks who have already contributed to the GIFTS Annual Appeal: Earl Swan Robert Horvath Mr. and Mrs. Esperon Judy and Larry Strah Robert and Joan Hinkle Walter J. Kosmatka Catherine Smith Dina and Thomas Connole Dan Kearns ENDOWMENT FUND We appreciate the many who continue to invest in our award-winning school, insuring a strong endowment fund for the future of the school. Each year, whether we have a profit or not, we use $60,000 of the funds to support the operating costs of the school. We are grateful to the following that have showed their support this year: Michael and Barbara Rowane James and Judith Nainiger THE SYMBOLON CATHOLIC FAITH EXPLAINED The Last Things: What Happens after We Die The Church has long taught that prayerful consideration of the Four Last Things death, judgment, heaven and hell is an essential part of our growth and maturation as Christians. Unless and until we take these things seriously, our life here on earth will lack meaning and focus. Come to the October session of Symbolon to come face to face with topics we often avoid. You may attend either session: at St Paschal on October 8 from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. in the Eymard Room or at St Clare on October 11 from 12:30 to 2:00p.m. in the Harvest Room. There is no registration fee, so please just come and become part of this exciting adult faith formation program. This is the last session of Symbolon for this calendar year. If you have any questions or would like further information, call Rosalie Lewis at

4 JUST THOUGHTS FROM THE SOCIAL ACTION COMMISSION Life and dignity are actually two sides of the same coin or like the right and left hand of the body of Christ, the church. You cannot have one without the other, which is why organizations only concerned with the unborn, or organizations only concerned with social justice do a disservice to each other and the entire teaching. The Saint Paschal Baylon Social Action Commission meets the 2 nd Wednesday of every month at 7:00 p.m. in the Kazel Room in the rectory. All are welcome. If you would like to receive our s, spbsocialaction@gmail.com. Our next meeting is Wednesday, October 10 th. YOUTH MINISTRY Remember kid, there s heroes and there s legends. Heroes get remembered but legends never die; follow your heart kid, and you ll never go wrong. -Babe Ruth in The Sandlot Thank you to everyone who attended our Youth Group s Family Outdoor Movie Night! We hope you had a great time. It s one of my favorite things we do as a parish family! Last week we focused on how we are going to THRIVE this year. One thing I try to reiterate is how we need to dig deep into God s word, and how we need to reach out and share the love of God with everyone we meet. We hope and pray our youth group will continue to THRIVE all year! Next week we will head to Villa Serena and serve lunch to the residents and talk and get to know them. On Sunday at our meeting, we will focus on how we are CHOSEN! 5 FROM FATHER LANE, SSS, OUR 8 TH PASTOR: 25 th Sunday in Ordinary Time: Even though Jesus made it clear in last week s Gospel what type of Messiah he would be, the disciples still do not even get it. He told them the type of death he would have, and he tells them again. Then they move to thinking about who is the greatest and as we know, Jesus continues to teach them and remind them about the type of leader he is: a servant leader. Isn t it great that we are reminded again and again too? We don t get it at times, and need the helpful reminders to enlighten us to a deeper sense of our call and service. And sometimes that service is to the least the one that we may not want to serve. God calls us to serve anyway; this is our Christian living and witness to the Gospel! As the letter of James would echo: this is how we are doers of the Word. September s Great Events! I am grateful to Tim Salcer and all the adults and youth who assembled a great team to have our 10 th Annual Nick s Knights Sports Camp for Special Kids, the Athletic Association for leading a great Mass, tailgate party and bonfire and for all who participated in our annual Leadership Day. We had an excellent facilitator Tuesday night, September 11, Patriot Day, Rick Krivanka, who led us through a review of our Pastoral Plan. We started this plan in 2015 after a two-year process to put it together. It s been amazing to see our work, with God s help, come to birth in our parish s life. We celebrated what s great about SPB. Here are a few of the highlights and summary of the evening remarks: Music ministry has grown with new choir members; ministry has seen growth as musicians Athletic Association has had 400 youth in sports, lots of championships (300 parishioners showed up at 11:00 p.m. to support the team in the championship game) Flock of Friends is now participating in service projects such as helping the Carmelites with landscaping, and at Ronald McDonald House Helping Hands continues to touch folks lives through service and the meaning of service and care SPB Moms Group grew to collaborate with the Ladies Guild; has evolved into the Young Families Group to include everyone, incorporating all family members Young families are active in the life of the parish, with much personal growth and outreach Play Like a Champion training occurred in our parish (for coaches helping others change peoples lives); not mattering if you are the best athlete we are youth ministers supporting and encouraging our youth as future leaders Family Service Night held with Helping Hands Ministry: made blankets for Villa Serena; made cards & toiletry bags for the homeless; many families attended; activity completed sooner than expected because of the number of families attending Social Action Commission is back after a 20-year hiatus, having a Catholic voice on issues again and sponsoring educational sessions Over the past few years, enormous growth with all the youth and family groups; from Bible Camp to Movie Nights: this year s Bible Camp - 60 youth volunteer, 10 adult volunteers Spring Fling has been a positive stewardship opportunity with so many people involved, building community and fellowship it has grown and developed so well, especially with the addition of a family night.

6 The different liturgies of the Triduum have been so spiritual and meaningful The Holy Thursday liturgy is so special, especially the interfaith foot washing moment, and inclusion of other cultures to welcome them and be of service The RCIA and new people joining the church and the culmination and joy of the Easter Vigil it is so meaningful and beautiful; it is to walk with the folks who become Catholic New Catholics and visitors to our parish are amazed at our many ministries; we are so blessed to have so many involved ministries. The Scouts are doing great work; it s both male and female scouts now; developing the next generation of leaders by nurturing the value of respect; many service projects giving back to the church and community Lot of behind the scenes governance goes on by the Finance and Pastoral Councils; there has been so much more transparency and have increased communication, letting folks know of the decision-making processes, publishing minutes to meetings; we have Facebook and Twitter, Paschal Life and the bulletin has improved tremendously in its layout 22 nd anniversary of the Rosary Making group; meet once a month to make and distribute rosaries, to rehab and hospitals for classrooms and more; we service missions in Jamaica and Uganda, 17 members have made 120,000 rosaries. Recently, the group was sent pictures of the children receiving rosaries and the children made baskets for us; everyone received a gift of thanks! We are making connections across the world! How our liturgies are so engaging; focus on details to make the celebrations special from music to homilies and the overall preparation; it is edifying to know and see the liturgical ministers saying prayers before Mass in the sacristy to prepare for the liturgy Opportunity to have intimate spiritual growth here from youth to adults; people are friendly, and our parish has an awesome vibe. Our school helps our students be successful in academic and spiritual growth. There is such a strong focus on being a Eucharistic-centered parish through the Prayer (adoration ministry), communion to the sick as part of the Mass s Communion Rite. We are always taking the Eucharist out and living it! Community awareness is strong and the focus with outreach to our first responders (Blue Mass), Highland Heights Home Days and other ways our parishioners are leaders in the Hillcrest area. Received another STEM award, Green Knight award and great to have the DARE program to encourage leadership School has really evolved and so many wonderful compliments to be much more welcoming, great website and user friendly. Smooth transition to our new school year and leaders continuing to build on our successes Love the new logo and theme for the parish and song. Love the music during PSR Night Prayer Prayer Shawl ministry is so awesome powerful impact in giving the children a shawl when they are baptized, to the sick and those in need and they are so moved to be touched with the weaving of prayers and love PSR has grown due to the leadership in building up the program; there were in 2010: 200 students, 16 volunteers in 2018 now 275 students and 45 volunteers/catechists Impressed with the music, liturgy and impressed that the community wants to learn new songs. Small group faith sharing groups have grown seven seasons of sessions and themes, from 20 people to 70 and one is in Spanish too working with our cluster parish, Saint Clare Symbolon an adult faith formation program has sessions that are free, no books, just handouts, come when you are able feeling, another cluster of our parish program with Saint Clare Eymard Spiritual Group joined with the youth group to form Eymard Buddies (junior high students) joining for lunch intergenerational conversations and care for one another From Father Choy and other missionaries from other countries (SSS and other visitors) have said this (with an international perspective): Wonderful commitment to Prayer in the parish s life and the folks who come, with so much enthusiasm to be involved in so many ministries.

7 In a future Paschal Life, we will share the hopes we have for the future as we begin the process to start another pastoral plan, beginning with the Feast of the Baptism of the LORD Thanks for helping us achieve our pastoral goals! Reminders: Don t forget to resign up for eoffering! You may have noticed that since the glitch that collection is ½ of what it used to be and it surely affected our income for August leaving us with a $24,000 deficit so far this year. Please return your census card Thanks for helping us with the gap between the actual tuition and the cost of a Catholic education by contributing to the GIFTS program. Respect Life Month is coming join in the special recitations of the rosary on Wilson Mills Sunday, October 7 at 1:00 p.m. and Saturday, October 13 at Noon. A (Green K)night to Remember!
