3 LETTER FROM THE PASTOR Dear Friends, On this Palm Sunday of the Lord s Passion, we embark on Holy Week and begin to see and experience the full drama behind the words from last Sunday s Gospel text: Amen, amen, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies, it produces much fruit. ( John 12:24) In that same text is the request to Philip by some Greek visitors that they might have a chance to see Jesus. As always with the Gospel of John, something more is going on here; we the readers those whom John is encouraging to come to believe ( John 20:30) are the ones who will be given the glimpse of Jesus and a powerful one it is. In the liturgy of Triduum we will see and experience with Jesus all that the Father has asked of him and maybe more importantly, the response of Jesus in the gift of himself, the ultimate gift of love. All of this suggests to me a way of entering Holy Week that I ve never before considered: holding the prayer we call the Our Father in my mind and heart in solidarity with Jesus through the week. The words of the prayer itself Thy kingdom come, thy will be done unite me to Jesus as He follows his Father s will, as he takes and drinks the cup that the Father gave him ( John 18:11). In whatever way you choose to enter this Holy Week, please know that as your Pastor, I am humbled by the example you have given me of perseverance, kindness, and generosity. With your day to day duties to work and family, through your courage in sickness and loss, through your dedication to service here and all around the city of Santa Barbara, and in so many other ways, you continue to show me the path to life as a child of God. For all of this, as we begin our Holy Week, I thank you! Gratefully, Fr. Dan Lackie, OFM Pastor PASCHAL TRIDUUM THE SACRED THREE DAYS HOLY THURSDAY - MARCH 29 8:00 am Morning Prayer (no Mass) St. Junipero Serra Chapel 7:30 pm Mass of the Lord s Supper Mission Reception of the Holy Oils Washing of Feet Adoration before the Blessed Sacrament until Midnight. 4 LITURGY AND SPIRITUALITY Question of the Week PALM SUNDAY OF THE LORD'S PASSION 1. Question for Children: Name one thing that you will do each day this week to remind you that Jesus died and rose to new life for you. 2. Question for Youth: We hear the story of Jesus death each year. What did you hear differently this year? How has your faith changed in the past year? 3. Question for Adults: Identify and share one way that you personally die. Reflection on Next Sunday's Gospel EASTER SUNDAY Easter Sunday dawns with all the power and hope that a day can have. The first entrance antiphon is less clear, but the second one makes the resurrection and enthronement of Christ as Lord and Savior of all history the central theme of our praise. The opening collect for this day focuses on the resurrection as the means by which we are joined to the life of heaven. It has the added benefit of an explicit mention of the Holy Spirit, a rarity in the Roman liturgy. In the United States, the renewal of baptismal promises is considered an integral part of the liturgy and it replaces the profession of faith on this day. It should be celebrated with full vigor, and the faithful should be able to recall their baptism by word and by being well and truly sprinkled with holy water. The prayer over the gifts names the church as reborn and nourished by the sacrifice of Christ. This recalling of why Easter is such a joyful day tempers our joy with the knowledge of the price Page 4 LOOKING AHEAD March 25, 2018 Palm Sunday that was paid for our joy. Preface I for Easter is to be used, and because this is the first Easter Mass for the vast majority of the faithful, the Roman Canon (Eucharistic Prayer I), using the complete lists of saints. The Communion antiphon refers to Christ, and to the eucharistic elements as the unleavened bread of purity and truth. The prayer after Communion makes clear once again, the reason for all our joy. We celebrate the resurrection of Jesus in the hope of one day being made worthy to participate in that same mystery. The sung Easter dismissal with its alleluias should be sung on Easter Day, even by those ministers who cannot sing. It is a tribute to the glory of the resurrection that even the musically challenged break into song on this day. The sung Easter dismissal with its alleluias should be sung at the Easter Vigil, even by those ministers who cannot sing. It is a tribute to the glory of the resurrection that even the musically challenged break into song on this night. By Glenn CJ Byer, MA SLD 2003, OCP. All rights reserved. Prepare for Next Sunday's Liturgy APRIL 1, EASTER SUNDAY SCRIPTURE First Reading Acts 10:34a, We ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. Responsorial Psalm Psalm 118:1-2, 16-17, and This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad. Second Reading Colossians 3:1-4 Seek what is above, where Christ is. Holy Gospel John 20:1-9 He had to rise from the dead.

5 LITURGY AND SPIRITUALITY Franciscan Spirituality Francis and the Cross of Christ It is not a God who is vindictive, vengeful, sadistic or punishing that speaks to the heart of Saint Francis and calls him forth to live more deliberately his baptismal vocation to follow the Gospel, but a God of love. It is God who suffered on the cross precisely because of love, not despite it. And this love, this passion for humanity, touched the life of Francis in a permanent, life-altering way.
