4 March 11, 2018 St. Barbara Parish Page 3 FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT Dear Friends, May the Lord give you peace! For the past two months the Pastoral Council has been doing a focused review of the state of the parish and is now in the process of crafting a pastoral plan to carry us strongly into the next three years as a center of Franciscan evangelization. The plan will serve us all as a map to guide us and hold us all accountable in five key areas: - faith formation growing in our knowledge and practice of Gospel life; - building community strengthening the bonds that connect us; - communication fostering timely messages of information and inspiration; - liturgy bringing our worship and prayer to life for the whole community; - stewardship extending our God given gifts to bring God s love to the world. A separate working group for each area is drafting goals and objectives for each area of the plan, with your input needed at various stages of the planning process. The engagement of every person in the parish is crucial to our success in creating the plan and, of course, in carrying it out! This week the Council and I are asking that you think about the first area named above, faith formation. To help them set goals and objectives, the working group for this area has created a planning tool to gather input from all parishioners. It s a discernment questionnaire asking us all to reflect on matters such as: Where are you right now with regard to your own formation as a disciple of Jesus Christ? What s been your experience in learning the faith? Right now, what content and what methods are most helpful to you in growing your knowledge and practice of the faith? What ways help you learn best: Lectures? Small groups? Panel discussions? The planning document will be available and distributed in various ways over the next two weeks. Please get hold of a copy at Mass or at the parish office and help us by filling it out. The path of love is being opened in marvelous ways and God invites us to walk that path together prayerfully and with great care! Gratefully, Fr. Dan Lackie ofm Pastor TOGETHER IN MISSION WEEKLY UPDATE Peace and all good be yours! The Together In Mission appeal has processed 25,000 donations contributed from parishes across the Archdiocese. To date, more than 130 St. Barbara Parishioners have already contributed to the appeal, we are so grateful for your commitment to keeping churches, parish schools and religious education programs to make the Gospel available to all. If you have not made a donation to Together In Mission, please consider a gift to this important appeal. Envelopes are available at the Parish Office and you may also donate online at and indicate Parish Code Many thanks! Gratefully, Fr. Dan ofm

5 Page 4 St. Barbara Parish March 11, 2018 Prepare for Next Sunday s Liturgy March 18 5th Sunday of Lent First Reading-Jeremiah 31:31-34 I will make a new covenant and remember their sin no more. Responsorial Psalm: 51:3-4, 12-13, Create a clean heart in me, O God. Second Reading-Hebrews 5:7-9 Christ learned obedience and became the source of eternal salvation. Holy Gospel- John 12:20-33 If a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it produces much fruit. Reflection On Next Sunday s Gospel With Holy Week on the horizon, the texts for this day make a bold request that we might partake in the passion with Christ. They also ask that God save us even as we ask to be part of that passion. The entrance antiphon situates us in the position of Christ before the passion, though facing evil and injustice, we are sure that God will be our salvation. The opening collect directly asks that we participate in the mystery of the cross. The prayer over the offerings equates us with the catechumens. Just as they prepare to be enlightened in baptism, so we ask that our offering in the eucharist might be a means to purity for those already enlightened by baptism. Once again the preface and the Communion antiphons are related to the readings of the day, with the preface linked to the Gospel of Year A. If the readings of Year B or C are used, Preface II of Lent is a good choice. The prayer after Communion again brings the image of sacrifice before us as a means to unity with the Christ. All of this emphasis on offering and sacrifice clearly lend themselves to Eucharistic Prayer I.

6 March 11, 2018 St. Barbara Parish Page 5 4th Sunday of Lent Question for Children: Who is one person in your life who supports your faith and helps it to grow? Question for Youth: The Gospel speaks of following God as coming t o w a r d the light. How can you move towards the light in your own life? What is the darkness that needs Jesus healing in your life? Question for Adults: When is it difficult for you to believe? What particular line in this reading helps your faith? Let us Pray for the Sick Susan Djuric Sheryl & Chris Scott Vincent Whelan George Johnson Leopoldo Gaitan Pat Gaitan Robert Boudesseul Luisa Bella Whelan Maya Flores Kathleen Crosswhite Annette Colbert Bob Helman Lucy Hartnett Jovo Djuric Marie Mocny Peter Kruse Zain Haque Ernie Pico Lori Cameron Jack Fletcher Anthony Falcucci Lillian O Reilly Rosenna Vitetta Taylor Marmo Wayne Hoffman Rico Lorelli Dorothea Johnson Barbara Mallin Ron Holehouse Phil Rosenfeld Nancy Goodwillie Hilda Sanchez Juanita Estrellas Glenice Mathews Richard Masters Gary Davila Annie Ardry Mark Morehart Susan Rosas Maggie Carracino Javier Quezada - May they know Christ s healing - Please contact the parish office at , if you would like to add or remove a name on this prayer list. Keeping our Children Safe Establishing boundaries Helping children understand that they have the right to establish boundaries if anyone tries to hurt them or touch them in a way that makes them feel uncomfortable is an important, but sometimes difficult, task. Establishing boundaries around touch is integral to keeping kids safe. Having regular, open conversations about safety is one of the best ways to help keep kids safe. Remind children that their bodies are their own, encourage them to talk about their concerns and listen respectfully when they do. For more information from kidsmartz.org visit, ResourceDocuments/KidSmartz_Setting_Physical_Boundaries.pdf.
