3 June 25, 2017 St. Barbara Parish Page 3 Dear Parishioners, May the Lord give you Peace! 12TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME I believe that most of you are aware that we had a very generous donor who helped us refurbish the Blessed Sacrament Chapel in the rear of the Mission Church. It was named after the chapel in Assisi where the Franciscan movement began and where St. Francis died. It was called the Porziuncola which means small portion of Land. It is located inside the Papal Basilica of Saint Mary of the Angels which is several miles from the center of the City of Assisi. I would like to have the Chapel open during the day for parishioners and visitors to avail themselves of a time for private prayer and devotion. This may take a few weeks to get organized and make sure that the sacred objects are secure. I will keep you informed as to when the chapel will be open. It was suggested that a sodality may be a way to ensure that someone is present while the chapel is open. If you are interested in participating, please contact me. Also Fr. Larry and I will be using the Blessed Sacrament Chapel to hear confessions instead of the confessional in the rear of the Church. This is to implement one of the decisions of Vatican II, to allow people to go face to face with the priest or remain anonymous. A screen with be set up for those wanting to go the traditional way and a chair will be available to those wanting to go face to face. This is also an excellent way to utilize this sacred space. We will begin Saturday the 1st of July. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch with me. Know of my prayers for you and your families as we move forward providing the beacon of light that radiates from this holy hill over the city named for Saint Barbara. Did You Know... The Nativity of Saint John the Baptist June 24 Saint John the Baptist s Story Responsorial Psalm Psalm 89:2-3, 16-17, (2a) For ever I will sing the goodness of the Lord. 2nd Reading Romans 6:3-4, 8-11 Buried with Christ in baptism, we shall walk in the newness of life. Gospel Matthew 10:37-42 Whoever does not take up his cross is not worthy of me. Whoever receives you, receives me. Reflection on Next Sunday s Liturgy of the Word The reality of early Christian discipleship always had the potential of being harsh. Hard choices had to be made and these choices could affect one's relationship with one's family. Keep in mind that family membership, identity, support, and care were held in highest honor by the culture of Jesus. Family was everything. The teaching of Jesus does not say that one should value and love family less, but it does say that one must value and love Jesus more (Mt 10:37). If ever one had to choose between family or Jesus the choice always had to be Jesus. This is a true test of discipleship and some would find it impossible. Disciples must know that the way of discipleship is not a way of glory, power, and wealth. It is, at its core, the way of the cross (Mt 10:38). Without the cross, there is no resurrection. Without death, there is no new life. For a disciple, what really constitutes life will appear like death to others, and what others see as death will be life for a disciple (Mt 10:39). Discipleship is fundamentally a counter-cultural way to live. The disciple represents Jesus on earth. Therefore, whoever receives a disciple in effect actually receives Jesus. In turn, whoever receives Jesus will actually be receiving God (Mt 10:40). Often this all takes place anonymously. Christian prophets who were often itinerant missionaries deserve to be received as those who speak in the name of God (Mt 10:41). This was not always easy to determine and was sometimes a judgment of faith. Still whoever is willing to risk and to reach out to meet even the most basic needs of a disciple will receive a just reward (Mt 10:42). 2005, OCP. All rights reserved. Jesus called John the greatest of all those who had preceded him: I tell you, among those born of women, no one is greater than John. But John would have agreed completely with what Jesus added: [Y]et the least in the kingdom of God is greater than he (Luke 7:28). John spent his time in the desert, an ascetic. He began to announce the coming of the Kingdom, and to call everyone to a fundamental reformation of life. His purpose was to prepare the way for Jesus. His baptism, he said, was for repentance. But one would come who would baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire. John was not worthy even to untie his sandals. His attitude toward Jesus was: He must increase; I must decrease (John 3:30). John was humbled to find among the crowd of sinners who came to be baptized the one whom he already knew to be the Messiah. I need to be baptized by you (Matthew 3:14b). But Jesus insisted, Allow it now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness (Matthew 3:15b). Jesus, true and humble human as well as eternal God, was eager to do what was required of any good Jew. John thus publicly entered the community of those awaiting the Messiah. But making himself part of that community, he made it truly messianic. The greatness of John, his pivotal place in the history of salvation, is seen in the great emphasis Luke gives to the announcement of his birth and the event itself both made prominently parallel to the same occurrences in the life of Jesus. John attracted countless people to the banks of the Jordan, and it occurred to some people that he might be the Messiah. But he constantly deferred to Jesus, even to sending away some of his followers to become the first disciples of Jesus. Perhaps John s idea of the coming of the Kingdom of God was not being perfectly fulfilled in the public ministry of Jesus. For whatever reason, when he was in prison he sent his disciples to ask Jesus if he was the Messiah. Jesus answer showed that the Messiah was to be a figure like that of the Suffering Servant in Isaiah. John himself would share in the pattern of messianic suffering, losing his life to the revenge of Herodias. Reflection John challenges us Christians to the fundamental attitude of Christianity total dependence on the Father, in Christ. Except for the Mother of God, no one had a higher function in the unfolding of salvation. Yet the least in the kingdom, Jesus said, is greater than he, for the pure gift that the Father gives. The attractiveness as well as the austerity of John, his fierce courage in denouncing evil all stem from his fundamental and total placing of his life within the will of God. from Saint of the Day Franciscan Media.org
