3 LETTER FROM PASTOR Dear Friends, Peace and all good be yours! In last week s Gospel we heard Jesus attempting gently to pry open the imaginations of his listeners through parables. This week s divine pedagogy is a little more drastic: the father of John the Baptist, Zechariah, struck dumb by the angel of the Lord, regains his voice only after readjusting his plans for the naming of his son. John is his name, he scrawls on a tablet, thus complying with the Lord s desire to bring about something new through this child who is given a new name for an altogether new and holy task for life. Each time we come to Mass we too are called to a new and holy task through the new and eternal covenant we celebrate. Every Sunday we dramatize our identity as disciples. As clergy, lay ministers, and parishioners we all have a role to play in this sacred drama. Like John the Baptist we experience the hand of the Lord upon us and seek to grow and become strong in spirit. Through our music and voices, our spirit of hospitality and gestures, our openness and our prayerful responses and Amens! we are shaped, little by little, week by week, into Christ s body for the world. This coming Wednesday night, our liturgical ministers will gather to reflect on how our weekly liturgy here at the Mission can become more and more effectively the source of our life as disciples of Jesus. As we celebrate the birth of John the Baptist, we might all reflect on how the great liturgical drama of the Sunday liturgy sends us out into the drama of the world to be heralds of the Gospel with the powerful actor John as our model. Titus 3:14 Keeping our Children Safe Safety Trumps Manners As parents/caregivers, we teach children to say please and thank you, to play nicely, and to respect other adults. It is also key to stress the importance of safety, and let children know that it is okay to be impolite if they feel threatened or scared. Children should know that it s okay to say NO if someone is asking them to do something they don t feel comfortable doing, and that setting boundaries by saying things like -- Don t touch me there, or I don t like that -- are not rude, but in fact necessary for their safety. Don't Wait Workshop Building on the great response to recent events featuring Frank Ostaseski s presentation, Five Invitations: What the Dying Teach the Living, Hospice of Santa Barbara has organized a series of five workshops. Using clips from Frank s presentation, there will be discussion focusing on where we are in our life and where we want to be at its ending. Each workshop will be focused on one of the five invitations, with the first being Don t Wait.
