3 November 19, 2017 St. Barbara Parish Page 3 33RD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Dear Friend, This past Wednesday afternoon, in the small side chapel of the Old Mission Church, six Franciscan novices received their brown habits and put them on for the first time. It was a simple ceremony, a bit emotional, too, honoring another step on the path of these wonderful men Troy, Jason, James, Antonio, Michael, and Luis. As part of the service (called investiture), Father Michael Blastic OFM, a scholar of Franciscan spirituality and a member of the novitiate team, offered the reflection. He spoke about how many times the early biographer of St. Francis, Thomas of Celano, notes the Saint changing clothes during the course of his early conversion. The fine clothes of a merchant s son were tossed off for soldier s garb, which were eventually traded in for the hermit s robe, the accepted religious attire of the day for people devoting their lives to God in prayer. What s interesting is that the hermit s robe apparently didn t quite do it for Francis, so he set it aside for what became his most famous and eloquent fashion statement, a simple tunic, what poor people wore. Recounting all of this, Father Michael gently offered that we friars must never allow our brown robes (habits) to keep us from the expression of our unique Gospel identity and our solidarity with the poor of the world, especially in the communities where we serve. With arms out, our habits happen to be shaped like a cross. It is no coincidence that this Sunday we are being called by Pope Francis to honor the first ever World Day of the Poor. In the materials for pastors planning for special liturgies and homilies, the Pope s Council on the New Evangelization cites the words of Pope Francis as follows: We may think of the poor simply as the beneficiaries of our occasional volunteer work or of impromptu acts of generosity that appease our conscience. However good and useful such acts may be for making us sensitive to people s needs and the injustices that are often their cause, they ought to lead to a true encounter with the poor and a sharing that becomes a way of life. As we continue to grow as a center of Franciscan evangelization here at the Mission, these are words to take to heart. All of us are to be clothed in the poor Christ. Sincerely, Fr. Dan, ofm
4 Page 4 St. Barbara Parish November 19, 2017 Prepare for Next Sunday s Liturgy November 26 Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe First Reading-Ezekiel 34:11-12, As for you my flock, I will judge between one sheep and another. Responsorial Psalm 23:1-2, 2-3, 5-6 The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want. Second Reading-1 Corinthians 15:20-26, 28 Christ will hand over the kingdom to his God and Father so that God may be all in all. Holy Gospel- Matthew 25:31-46 The Son of Man will sit upon his glorious throne and he will separate them one from another. Reflection On Next Sunday s Gospel The passage from Ezekiel portrays God as the shepherd par excellence who will guard the people of Israel and save them from being lost. God will be the good shepherd tending the sheep, rescuing the scattered of the flock, bringing them to rest in good pastures in their own land. All will be made right in Israel when God is accepted and acknowledged as the shepherd. The famous passage from Matthew s Gospel of the last judgment scene was painted spectacularly by Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel. The nations will be divided into two groups: those who have done good deeds and those who have failed to do good deeds. The Christian tasks of feeding the hungry, offering hospitality to the homeless, clothing the naked, comforting the sick and visiting the imprisoned are listed, as is the reward for performing these actions. These activities are to be practiced by the Christians toward the poor and downtrodden of the world. If the nations fail to do these activities, they will go to eternal damnation, while the righteous will go off to eternal life. The passage from First Corinthians offers a reflection on the power of Jesus victory over sin and death. It offers a step by step treatment of what will happen in the end times. At his coming, all the dead will be raised, then he will hand over all of the redeemed creation to his Father. During Christ s reign, all enemies will be put down, while the righteous will be gathered up into communion with the Father. By Dale J. Sieverding 2008, OCP. All rights reserved. Did You Know... Saint Agnes of Assisi s Story November 19 B orn Caterina Offreducia, Agnes was the younger sister of Saint Clare, and her first follower. When Caterina left home two weeks after Clare s departure, their family attempted to bring her back by force. They tried to drag her out of the monastery, but her body suddenly became so heavy that several knights could not budge it. Her uncle Monaldo tried to strike her but was temporarily paralyzed. The knights then left Caterina and Clare in peace. Saint Francis himself gave Clare s sister the name Agnes, because she was gentle like a young lamb. Agnes matched her sister in devotion to prayer and in willingness to endure the strict penances that characterized the Poor Ladies lives at San Damiano. In 1221, a group of Benedictine nuns in Monticelli near Florence asked to become Poor Ladies. Saint Clare sent Agnes to become abbess of that monastery. Agnes soon wrote a rather sad letter about how much she missed Clare and the other nuns at San Damiano. After establishing other monasteries of Poor Ladies in northern Italy, Agnes was recalled to San Damiano in 1253, as Clare lay dying. Three months later Agnes followed Clare in death, and was canonized in Reflections God must love irony; the world is so full of it. In 1212, many in Assisi surely felt that Clare and Agnes were wasting their lives and were turning their backs on the world. In reality, their lives were tremendously life-giving, and the world has been enriched by the example of these poor contemplatives.
