Book a place through bookings@peterborough-diocese.org.uk of More details at: Continuing below is an excellent article by Dave Hill of the Church of the Good Shepherd, Colorado, defining the words in common use within the church broken up under various headings: These are general terms used in the church that don't fall into the other categories. Burse: From the Greek byrsa ("bag"). A burse is one of the furnishings of the altar for communion, and is a pocket case made from two squares of some rigid material covered in cloth of the seasonal Colour. The burse sits on top of the chalice, paten and veil, and serves to hold a corporal. Often, the burse also serves to hide an extra purificator. Chalice: From Latin calix ("cup"). A chalice is the cup used to contain the wine (and a little water) used at Communion. Charcoal: Substance upon which incense is burned in the thurible. There are various types of "self-lighting" charcoals. Chrism: A mixture of olive oil and balsam, blessed by a bishop, and sometimes used at baptisms, confirmations, ordinations and some blessings of altars and other church fixtures. Chrism is not the same as other holy oils such as those used for the unction of the sick. No balsam is added to oil used for unction. Ciborium: A cup that resembles a chalice, except that is has a removable lid. A ciborium may be used to hold communion wafers during the Eucharist, or to hold the Reserve Sacrament in the aumbry or tabernacle. Corporal: From Latin corpus ("body"). A large, square piece of linen laid on top of the altar cloth (or fair linen) at Communion, upon which the chalice and paten are placed. The corporal may be kept in the burse when not in use on the altar.

Lighting Up The Past Lightingupthepast.co.uk ARTISTIC IRON WORK MADE TO YOUR DESIGNS WEATHER VANES, CANDLE HOLDERS, CURTAIN POLES MADE BY LITTLE HARROWDEN CRAFTSMAN MICK HOOPER New life At the moment I find I often wake up to the wonderful sound of the dawn chorus the sound of feathered courtship, the precursor to nest-building, egg laying and hungry young chicks. If those birds could think of the hard work ahead of them perhaps they wouldn t sing so loudly and beautifully! But nature s call to multiply and fill the earth is very strong not even the certainty of sleepless nights puts us humans off producing families. Our fields are now full of lovely new lambs delighting us with their races and games. Village and church life go through the same cycles as country life organisations and events that were once much enjoyed begin to age and change, and some die out. And then someone comes up with a new idea and the cycle begins again that s just life, but it doesn t stop us worrying about what is happening in our communities. New things are usually vulnerable they can go off in the wrong direction, they can even be snuffed out. Cuddling my new grandson reminded me once again of the fragility of infant life. His three-year-old sister rebels loudly when her parents won t let her go off in a particular direction (she d spend her whole life on the ipad if she could!). We worry about how children will turn out, and sometimes our advice is helpful and sometimes less so. Life has changed since some of us brought our own children up. Village and church life is very much the same. When someone tries to start something new they often have good ideas and great enthusiasm. Advice from those who ve been involved with community events can be helpful sometimes, but not always because life is moving on. New things need space to grow and bloom in their own right so they can meet people s needs as our older organisations have done so well for so long. I was intrigued to hear recently that the Scout Movement needs many new leaders to cope with lots of would-be young members AND because they need to adapt to the changing shape of volunteering. At the end of May I will be venturing into retirement, a new unknown life-style for me. Downsizing to a small two-bedroom bungalow means disposing of furniture and things I ve gathered over my adult life-time, all full of memories. Change is not easy but it does need to happen if new life is to be born and allowed to grow into its own life-giving shape. I have every confidence that our villages and our churches will adapt and continue even in the four years I ve been with you I ve seen new ideas take root and develop you are such great communities! May God guide you all through the changes ahead and long may you blossom! Mary

For more information contact Alan Lodge or Sheila Waters Homeowners are being encouraged not to buy goods or services from cold-callers after a spate of complaints about suspected rogue traders. The recent warmer weather has resulted in a number of calls to Northamptonshire County Council s Trading Standards from people who have been offered maintenance work on their property by doorstep traders. Some of the complaints received relate to coldcallers who have offered roofing work which has been unnecessary and over-priced, and the householders, who are often elderly, have said they felt pressured to hand over cash payments. Trading Standards are advising people never to buy goods or services from a cold-caller on their doorstep, even if it is claimed the work needs doing immediately. All too often, this work is never completed or carried out to a poor standard. If you are concerned about a caller at your door or suspect that rogue traders or distraction burglars are operating in your community, contact the dedicated Doorstep crime Action Network (DAN) on , or if a crime is in progress, dial 999.

20 May Gardeners Corner By Alistair Peak of PGS May may be the month of May Blossom but there are lots of other things to enjoy and see in your gardens as well this month. Plants are in full flow as they are growing vey fast day-by-day, so do watch them particularly climbers as the may need tying to prevent them getting blown around and broken! With this in mind, you do need start to thinking about staking your herbaceous plants. If you do this early enough whist they are young you can keep them under control and it also prevent having to truss them up like a Turkey and keeps them looking natural. There are many different ways of keeping your plants upright, you can either put canes around and then use string to tie them together - be careful not to poke your eyes - also you can use pea sticks these are mainly hazel sticks, which you collect when the plants are dormant. Another thought is that when you do any pruning over the winter, keep the pruning and then use them later in the year. You can also buy numerous systems of staking up from your local garden centre. Usually when you do the staking etc. this can be seen at this time of year. However, as everything is growing so quickly, you will soon lose the sight of them. This can be a busy time in your garden with lots of planting, weeding and mowing to do but do remember to also think about keeping the edges of your lawns clipped, if you are busy with life there is a saying which goes If you can only mow your lawn and clip the edges, it can hide a lot other things that need doing in your garden. I personally do not like plants that hang over the edges of paths or the border onto the lawns, which in turns kills the grass. So think about keeping the plants lifted off the lawns with one of the above methods. In your greenhouse the temperature can rise very quickly, do keep them well ventilated but also watch for cool nights. As mentioned above, plants are growing quickly at this time of year and so will your weeds so keep on top of weeding with your hoe or fork. Alistair s Tip: If you have planted any bare rooted plants over the last Autumn/Winter ensure you keep them well watered for their first year and also weed free. pytchleychurch@outlook.com Pytchley Parish Council Clerk to Pytchley Parish Council Anna Palmberg 23 Old End Piddington Northampton NN7 2DF Tel: Notice of Annual Parish Council Meeting The Annual Parish Council Meeting will take place on Monday 22 nd May at 8.00 pm in Pytchley village Hall Reports will be given by the Parish Council and village organisations. The public are invited to attend and ask questions. A normal parish council meeting will commence at 7.00 pm and be adjourned at 8.00 pm for the purpose of the Annual Parish Council Meeting. Following the Annual Parish Council meeting the parish council meeting will reconvene to conclude their business. The public are also welcome at the parish council meeting but may not speak at this meeting. Pytchley Parking issues Please avoid parking cars on pavements so as to restrict access for prams. Cars so parked forces mothers to walk in the road exposing them to unnecessary risk. Please park sensibly. Similarly where possible please do not park on grass verges as this churns up the grass, spoiling the image of our village
