1 THE ANNUNCIATION GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH SUNDAY OF THE HOLY FATHERS (4 TH ECUMENICAL SYNOD) JULY 16, 2017 Rev. Fr. Joseph Gingrich, Proistamenos Altar Boys: All Available Ushers on Duty: Team 5 Epistle Reading Titus 3: 8-15 Gospel Reading Matthew 5: Today s Divine Liturgy Hymns and Scripture Readings: TODAY S DIVINE LITURGY HYMNS AND SCRIPTURE READINGS: HYMNS AFTER THE LITTLE (GOSPEL) ENTRANCE RESURRECTIONAL APOLYTIKION IN THE PLAGAL FIRST MODE Let us worship the Word, O ye faithful, praising Him that with the Father and the Spirit is co-beginningless God, Who was born of a pure Virgin that we all be saved; for He was pleased to mount the Cross in the flesh that He assumed, accepting thus to endure death. And by His glorious rising, He also willed to resurrect the dead. APOLYTIKION FOR SUN. OF THE HOLY FATHERS IN THE PLAGAL FOURTH MODE Most glorified art Thou, O Christ our God, Who hast established our Fathers as luminous stars upon the earth, and through them didst guide us all to the true Faith. O Most Merciful One, glory be to Thee. DISMISSAL HYMN OF THE ANNUNCIATION FOURTH MODE On this day when our salvation is crown d for eternity, and the revelation of the mystery of the ages. With Divine Grace the Son of God becomes the Virgin s Son and Gabriel s good tidings proclaim the news, for this we rejoice in song unto the Holy Theotokos. Hail to You who are fill d with grace, the Lord is with You! SEASONAL KONTAKION IN THE SECOND MODE O Protection of Christians that cannot be put to shame, mediation unto the creator most constant: O despise not the voices of those who have sinned; but be quick, O good one, to come unto our aid, who in faith cry unto thee: Hasten to intercession and speed thou to make supplication, O thou who dost ever protect, O Theotokos, them that honor thee.
EPISTLE READING PRIEST: Let us attend. READER: Be glad in the Lord, and rejoice, O righteous. Blessed are they whose transgressions have been forgiven. PRIEST: Wisdom READER: The reading is from St. Paul s letter to Titus 3:8-15. PRIEST: Let us attend. READER: TITUS, my son, the saying is sure. I desire you to insist on these things, so that those who have believed in God may be careful to apply themselves to good deeds; these are excellent and profitable to men. But avoid stupid controversies, genealogies, dissensions, and quarrels over the law, for they are unprofitable and futile. As for a man who is factious, after admonishing him once or twice, have nothing more to do with him, knowing that such a person is perverted and sinful; he is self-condemned. When I send Artemas or Tychicos to you, do your best to come to me at Nicopolis, for I have decided to spend the winter there. Do your best to speed Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their way; see that they lack nothing. And let our people learn to apply themselves to good deeds, so as to help cases of urgent need, and not to be unfruitful. All who are with me send greeting to you. Greet those who love us in the faith. Grace be with you all. Amen. 5TH SUNDAY OF MATTHEW CH. 5: YOU ARE THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD! A city located on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do you light a lamp and place it under a measuring basket, but on a stand. And so it shines to all who are in the house. 16 Likewise, let your light shine before all, so that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven. 17 Do not think that I came to destroy the law or the prophets. I did not come to destroy, but to fulfill! 18 Amen, I tell you: until heaven and earth pass away, not even one smallest letter or one tiny pen stroked shall in any way pass away from the law, until all things are accomplished. 19 Whoever, therefore, shall break one of these least commandments and teach others to do so shall be called least in the Kingdom of Heaven; but whoever shall do and teach them shall be called great in the Kingdom of Heaven. SCHEDULE FOR SUNDAY, JULY 16, 2017 MATINS AND DIVINE LITURGY 8:15 AM FELLOWSHIP COFFEE HOUR is hosted by AHEPA. 3 Parish Council Mtg. 6:30pm Athenagoras Room FROM FR. JOSEPH -Archon Demet Zonars is looking to retire as our lead usher, and we thank him for his 30 years of service in this capacity! If you are interested in this essential ministry of our parish please come and see me. Demet is willing to help train someone in order for there to be a good transition. -We will begin our Marian Prayer Group on Wednesday July 26th at 3:00 PM and continue every Wednesday after that at the same time. Please meet in the church. This can be done without a priest as well. Thus if for any reason a priest can t be there a layman can lead. -Moving forward youth organizations such as Maids, GOYA or Sons will only be able to host coffee hours when Sunday School is not in session. We are doing our best to put their Christian and spiritual formation first by minimizing classroom disruptions. -Adult Catechism School will begin in the Fall on Tuesday nights. Exact start date and time are forthcoming. The adult classes must be on Tuesday nights because Wednesday and Friday in Lent we have services and Parish Council Meetings are on Thursdays. Due to this I m humbly requesting that no other organizations or committees schedule meetings on Tuesday evenings during the Catechism School year. Your Christian education and spiritual formation must take precedent. Dear Parents, The new Catechism School year will soon be upon us. The curriculum has changed and I couldn t be more excited! The Catechism School made the decision to purchase the new text books for all students in grades 6-12 at no cost to you. We were able to do this through the generous funding we receive from the Parish Council yearly, and we thank our council leaders for this. With the new curriculum there will be two very important changes. 1) Your students in grades 6-12 will be requested to bring their text book to class every Sunday when school is in session. Please help them remember. 2) In grades 6-12 there will be required reading at home. This will not be extensive and we ask you to support this. In fact, you could even do the reading with them as a family and learn together. The primary spiritual formation of children is accomplished by you the parents. As parents you re the first and foremost catechists of your children. You catechize informally but powerfully by example and instruction. You communicate values and attitudes by showing love for Christ and His Church and for each other, by reverently receiving the Eucharist regularly and living in its Spirit, and by fostering justice and love in all your relationships. Your active and regular involvement in the parish, your readiness to seek opportunities to serve others, and your practice of frequent prayer and devotion in your home, all make meaningful your profession of belief. Parents you nurture faith in your children by showing them the richness and beauty of what it looks like to live as a Christian. As parents your vocation to raise Christian children is sacred and I assure you of our willingness to ensure your children get the best Christian education possible. In return I ask that you support and live out the truths and moral principles of our faith in your homes, and that you make having them here every Sunday your first priority. There is nothing more important than the eternal life of the souls of your children. Nothing. With Love in Christ, Fr. Joseph

You can help by donating moderately priced gym shoes and socks for children ages preschool through high school, or dropping your check in the CCM Red Box in the Community Center Lobby. BOOKKEEPER S SUMMER HOURS Please see the summer business hours for Brandee Moran our parish bookkeeper. Monday July 17, am - 5pm Tuesday July 18, 2017 Off Wednesday July 19, 2017 Off Thursday July 20, am - 5pm Friday July 21, am - 5pm PLEASE CONTINUE YOUR STEWARDSHIP GIVING OVER THE SUMMER We are grateful to all of our parishioners who have made their 2017 Stewardship Commitment to the church and have either fulfilled that commitment or are current in their giving. As we approach the summer months, there is a tendency for Stewardship contributions to decrease. This can place the church in a difficult position as regular expenses, as well as expenses in preparation for the Greek Festival, require payment. The parish, just like our homes, must meet its budget monthly. JOY COURTYARD AND MEMORIAL GARDEN UPDATE What is going on with the courtyard project? Why has there been little construction progress? The contractor found that once the work began, a piece of the existing plan was not going to work. After several weeks of exhausting all measures, it was decided that we needed to alter that piece of the plan. The plan has been approved. The contractor will move forward as soon as they can, but we do not expect to be completed by the Festival. The Festival committee is aware of this, and has made alternate plans for outdoor seating. On behalf of the committee, I wanted to inform you of the delay. We want to make sure things are done the right way and we look forward to dedicating the Joy Courtyard and Memorial Garden as soon as we can. Thank you, Deb Pulos PARENTS PLEASE SEND US YOUR COLLEGE CHILDREN S CONTACT INFORMATION Parents of college students, please your children's school address to the church office Dear Parish Family, We would like to provide an update to the HVAC (heating and cooling) project. The replacement is complete, and we are working on adjusting the settings to provide comfort to those in attendance at church. We would like to personally thank all parishioners and organizations who contributed to this important project necessary to maintain the integrity of our church. We ask those who have made pledges to continue to fulfill those pledges. Statements will be coming with payment reminders. The replacement of the heating/cooling of our church is truly only the beginning. Our church has many needs to maintain the function and beauty of the church itself and the community center. A capital improvement committee has been put into place, and they have begun to identify needs of the church and community center. This group will prioritize these needs and work on receiving quotes for repairs. Once a list of needs/costs is complete, this list will be provided to the entire parish community. At that point, we will begin to work on raising funds for the next project(s) identified. We know, many of you are saying/thinking, here we go again, asking for more money. Yes, you are right.we are. For fear of sounding repetitive, this is OUR church, and we are responsible for its upkeep. Little if anything has been asked of the parish financially for many years. We have reached a point where there are many needs and we cannot ignore these needs they must be addressed. One way to avoid having to continually ask for money for various projects is for each of us to actively adhere to the new Stewardship program our parish is implementing. If each parish family contributed 3% of their annual
6 income to the church, the likelihood that we would need to continue asking for money drastically decreases, probably to zero. Our hope is we come together as a parish family and continue to provide the needs of our church and community center. In Christ, Fr. Joseph Gingrich Parish Priest Maria Abboud HVAC Chair
