Toronto West Seventh-day Adventist Church Newsletter Volume 1, Issue A JUBILEE YEAR AT TORONTO WEST Consecrate the fiftieth year and proclaim liberty throughout the land to all its inhabitants. It shall be a jubilee for you. Lev. 25:10 Golden Jubilee Cause for Celebration! A Golden Jubilee. 50 years. 5 decades. Half a century. A long time? Depending on which side of 50 one is on, opinions may differ! However, opinions aside, the reality is that over the span of 50 years, a lot has happened. 50 years ago, the Toronto West Seventh-day Adventist church officially began. In the early 1960s, 8 new settlers to Canada - Iva Saunders, Milton Saunders, Sheila Smith, Neville Smith, Eulice Ferdinand, Urich Ferdinand, Lurline Sulker and Roy Sulker felt the need to do something more about their spiritual life in Canada. They faced challenges, particularly adapting to the cool culture of the Great White North attitudes, worship services and temperature included. However, they were determined to make the best of life where they felt God had placed them. Dr. A.S. Markham of the British Methodist Episcopal church allowed this small, eager, group of individuals to rent his church located at 460 Shaw Street. With a place to call their own, this sparked a desire to reach more and more individuals, particularly the West Indians who were longing for a friendly familiarity. On December 14, 1963, with 34 charter members, it was officially organized as the West Toronto Seventh-day Adventist church. Encouraged by the growing number of attendees, the small congregation fundraised until in 1969 they IN THIS ISSUE Page 2 The Aeolians Page 4 A Question from God Page 8 Farewell Pastor Chichester Continued. on page 2 Page 15 A Matter of Convenience

Page 2 T his was it - the 4 th May 2013, the day the Aeolians would come to the Toronto Centre for Performing Arts. The announcements, flyers and videos, had informed us that the visiting choir was of world-class stature. A product of Oakwood University, they had won 3 gold choir Olympic medals, and had been classed number 1 in the world in genres of, jazz, pop and spiritual. This was indeed Toronto West s 50 th anniversary and as Brother Wayne McClean, chair of the 50 th anniversary committee highlighted, it was indeed deserving of something special. Others thought so too, judging from the variety of people that attended the concert. From the conversations throughout the hall before concert began it was evident that many were in anticipation of the blessings they would receive. For some, it was a first-time experience, whilst others had heard them sing before, either at church, the General Conference Session, or on 3ABN. As the concert began, the Aeolians made a captivating first impression - stage lights came on, the choir members stood with backs turned, as the opening lines of the old Negro Spiritual, Steal The Aeolians By Johanna L. Bannis Away, warbled through the hushed auditorium. Throughout the concert, Maestro Jason Max Ferdinand, the choir s director, (and incidentally the nephew of one of the founders of the Toronto West SDA Church), clearly enjoyed engaging the audience in the singing of old hymns such as How Great Thou Art and Lead Me, Guide Me. Observing this choir, it soon became clear that this was not merely a choir singing, but rather an anointed ministry. Of course, making it even sweeter was the fact that a Canadian was in the midst. Aaron Manswell, a member of Apple Creek SDA church and soon-to-be-graduate composed a song called Again which the Aeolians proudly performed for us. After hearing the SDA Chorale sing, led by Rose Heavens-Worrell, and hearing the musical talents of young pianist, Rashaad Allwood, one could hardly come away feeling unchanged or uninspired in some way. For those graduating from Oakwood, this was a bittersweet moment - leaving something they had lived and experienced for so long. However, one thing is for sure, that almost 70 years since the Aeolians were formed, they will continue to impact the world in a mighty way one song at a time. Cont d from cover were able to purchase their own building at 10 Harvie Avenue. There they remained for 30 years before moving to their current location at 1621 Albion Road, Toronto. To appropriately commemorate their Golden Jubilee a 50 th Anniversary Committee, chaired by Wayne McClean, was struck to orchestrate programs and events reflective of the history, culture and legacy of Toronto West and suspended by the theme: "50 Years: Reflecting, Celebrating, and Awaiting His Return, a suitable reminder of the journey and mission of the Toronto West Church. From January to July, 2013, topical themes such as Beginnings, Education, Health and Community, Music and Youth were celebrated. A range of local and international speakers and musicians graced the celebrations including Dr. Roy Adams, Norman Brown, Dr. Maria McClean, Donald McLeod, Matthew Feeley, world class choir The Aeolians, and Dr. Henry Wright. On the final anniversary Sabbath August 3, held at The Queensway Cathedral, the Sabbath school program

Page 3 began with a heavenly theme, drawing our minds upwards in preparation for Divine Hour. An array of special items took place throughout the program such as the Anniversary Choir singing Battle Hymn of the Republic and the Pastors litany consisting of former and present associate pastors of the Toronto West SDA church. Dr. Carlton Byrd gave us a message based on Psalm 100 appropriately based on praise for who God is and how He had played a part in Toronto West s legacy. The evening program was just as special. A Jubilee parade led by a combined Pathfinder drum corps from Toronto West, Apple Creek and Perth commenced the program. Civic, church officials and members of each daughter church followed. Each of the daughter churches came forward to congratulate mother church, Toronto West, with blessings, gifts and well-wishes. They are Toronto Perth, Apple Creek (formerly known as Agincourt), Bethel, Malton, Toronto Central, Heritage and the newly formed Nigerian Fellowship. Dignitaries also congratulated the church by way of speeches, video messages and letters. keep on dreaming and achieving big, no matter what the circumstances. The celebrations culminated on August 4 th with a grand Legacy banquet featuring food, comedy, music, art, and photography for members and well-wishers through the years. 50 years. A legacy lives on. It s a reminder of what happened in the past and what we re looking forward to for the future. May Toronto West Seventh-day Adventist church march on continuing to reflect on God s goodness, celebrate where we ve come from and await His soon return. Congratulations Toronto West on your Golden Jubilee! By Johanna.L. Bannis Various other specialties were sprinkled through the program one poignant moment included a slideshow, created by Simone Douglas (Toronto Perth), in remembrance of those who had passed away, to the meditative hymn It is Well with My Soul sung by Rose Heavens-Worrell. Pastor Dennis Marshall, General Vice President and Director of Education for the SDA Church in Canada, gave us the homily for the evening, reminding us to

Page 4 A Question From God By referencing the work of Ellen G. White, Pastor White used lighthearted humour to capture the congregation as he taught us about Hezekiah, the "praying rascal" who forgot about God's House and asked us to reflect on the places in our hearts and homes where we can show visitors that we pray. He asked, "how do the things in our homes bring glory to God"? And stated that if what is in our bodies is not right, then what is in our physical homes will also be contaminated. We should allow God to take over our hearts and minds and all other "houses" will be looked after. O n July 27th service at Toronto West was an impressive setting of Seventh-day Adventists coming together to refresh, reconnect and to revive their souls. Pastor Henry Wright delivered a message about the three houses of God- The House of God, the house of your heart and your physical house. Relying on his 49 years of service and experience with the Lord to guide him, he took the audience back to that faithful day when God questioned Hezekiah about exactly what he had shown in his house. Pastor Wright explained that though Hezekiah was a blessed man with many belongings, he did not honor God in showing the House of the Lord. He instead chose to show the materials things. From this, Pastor Wright implores God's people to end all praises of man and material things, and encourages us to instead praise God's work in man. The scripture, 2 Kings 20:12-15, was contextualized when Pastor Wright posed the same question as God to the congregation. He asked, "Where do you stand in relation to God's word?" He took us to the beginning of chapter 20 in order for us to understand the importance of God's question to Hezekiah. Hezekiah was sick unto death and should be so full of thanksgiving that he would shout praises to God as people entered his house. We are to accept the responsibility of our blessings and use every opportunity to share them with the world as a means of testifying about God's love for us. Pastor Wright concluded his message by sharing that God has given us the treasure of truths and he implores us to display it. We should celebrate God's transforming grace in our lives as prayers are answered, sins disappear and victories are won. In speaking through Hezekiah's experience with God's questioning, Pastor Wright filled our hearts and minds with the word of God and left us endeavoring to stand as a unified church consolidated around bringing glory to God and His house. 5 Helping Handz Summer Camp Page 5 In its 8th year, Helping Handz Summer Camp (HHSC) has become more than a regular camp; it has become an integral part of the growth of our children and youth both in the church and the community. With a staff not only representing T-West but Brampton and Perth SDA too, HHSC provides quality programming with innovative ideas. From arts and crafts to "Kids in the Kitchen," to a daily Academic study, campers are strengthening their skills in many areas. Not to mention, with daily worship and Christian beliefs upheld, campers are building their spiritual lives too. Reflecting on one of the 50th Anniversary's goals of "passing the torch", HHSC has begun a Leader in Training program to mentor our youth with skills that may not only be used in camp but that are transferable to other pro- As HHSC continues to be a safe haven and beacon for our community and church campers, please keep us in prayer that we have another blessed summer in 2014! We will continue to keep you in prayer as well. Many Blessings! Tricia Cater-McKenzie Camp Director

Page 6.ROC'N Highlights 2013! By: Triciana Loftman and Caroline Ambrose W elcome to ROC Season 6 ( )! Can you believe another season has come to an end? It has been six years and the Rexdale Outreach Choir is still going strong and will be with the continuous support of the church and community. ROC bounced into the New Year at the President Barack Obama Inaugural Community Inspirational Celebration in Toronto on Monday, January 21 st, 2013 at the St. James Cathedral. On Saturday March 16, 2013 Roc was invited to participate in the album release for the Woodbridge Brothers. From then on ROC was books solid with events like the 1 st Annual Student Success Gala on Saturday, April 6, 2013 presented by Marcia Brown founder of Trust 15 - Ladies on the Rise and Men of Distinction). the DAREarts Leadership Awards Gala en on to the RISE Gospel Showcase, and many more. They ended another accomplished milestone with their annual spring concert on at the Toronto West Seventh-day Adventist Church on Sunday, June 9, 2013 where the theme was "The Curse is Broken. This was an exciting evening for the choir because more family and friends were able to attend this event. The climatic event was when ROC was invited tothe 9 th Annual Choirs and Groups Celebration (CGC) Awards where they received the Total Prayz Awards of Excellence at The Church of God Sabbath Keeping Ministries on Saturday June 15, WOW, ROC got so big they even turned events down! The choir has indeed been blessed and we can be sure that even bigger things are in store for them in 2014! Roc has been a source of relief and strength for many within the Rexdale community and their concert themes has thoroughly represented the struggles and endeavors that they ve all faced and overcome. In, , they showed the Rexdale community that we were More Than Just the Music In 2009-ROC learnt that although they were Diamonds In The Rough, they can still shine brighter than anything else. Through hard work and dedication they were able to overcome their struggles and that s why in 2010, they decided that they were Moving Forward. In 2011 the struggles were still there, but they knew where they were going and that s why I Am became their theme. They were striving to be all that God wanted them to be, so this year they proved to us how and why The Curse Is Broken. We believe the choir was ordained, to do big things in the GTA area; therefore, we need to continue to pray and ask God to lead the directors, the board members, musicians and choir members in the right direction. Something great was started six seasons ago: let us continue to support ROC with a positive attitude as they continue to soar and gain new heights. On behalf of the ROC board, we would like to extend a warm welcome to the new members for the year and a welcome back to the old members. We know that this season, Season 7, will be a success because ROC is ministering in the name of our Father Jesus Christ. If you have any questions or comments for ROC please speak to any of the leaders: Vernon Smith Choir Director, Deon Flash Musical Director, Rochelle Atkin Coordinating Manager or rexdalecgc@hotmail.com Stay tuned for more ROC'N Highlights!

Toronto West Annual Anti-drug/violence March: A Newcomer s Perspective By Aquelia John Page 7 The day could not have started off any better: sunny and hot! Recently becoming a member in March 2013, this was my first Anti-Drug and Violence March of any kind and I was looking forward to it. I ve got to admit that I did not know what to expect and, to be honest, really did not open my mind to possibilities. I wanted to join in fresh and remain open to something new. Mission accomplished. Many of them told me that they appreciate this march very much and that no matter where you live, or what colour, creed you may be, we are all affected. Thank you T-West for helping me be my brother s Keeper. Amen! Peace! I was very impressed by the level of organization and the message inherent in the simplest things. For example, the March was led by the T-West Pathfinders followed by a caravan of vehicles with floats, music, walkers, and pick-up trucks. There was also a hearse! The message from its presence was loud and clear Drugs and violence kills people. Then, there were the police escorts on horseback, bicycles, cars. Not only did this March show that a local church was supportive of its own community and taking a very public stance against socially deprecating practices of drugs and violence but it received affirmation by police presence. Also in attendance were the MPP and MP of Etobicoke. We marched around clockwise starting from the intersection of Martin Grove and Albion, Kipling, John Garland, Jamestown Court, back onto John Garland, and finally Martin Grove. The March was well attended by the T-West congregation which meant a lot to me. Though there were no media but our own present, this was no problem, This March was a message to the community not a quest for notoriety. I believe the message was delivered loud and clear. The greatest lesson I took away from this march was the pleasure of getting out into the community, circulating tracks and flyers, and bonding with people often stigmatized for valuing, guns. On the contrary, these are regular people who want a simple yet quiet life but have their backs against the wall and sometimes feel abandoned. 8 Page 8 Farewell, Pastor Chichester By Marsha Birkett A s Seventh-day Adventists, we are all aware of the fact that every five years or so, our pastors are shuffled from one congregation to another. While this practice allows for various congregations to benefit and grow from the spiritual gifts of many different pastors, it still is not always easy to say goodbye to pastors and their families when it is time for them to move on. Over the past nearly eight years that Pastor Allan Chichester spent with the Toronto West church family, he and his family have become very dear to the congregation, and they will be greatly missed. The following article is made up of some of the thoughts and reflections of Pastor Chichester as he leaves us to go to lead Toronto Central. Pastor Chichester remembers arriving at Toronto West on January 6, 2006 and feeling right from the beginning that he had come to a warm and friendly place. He came with two important missions in mind: to develop a strategic plan to guide the vision of the church, and to develop a stronger community mission emphasis. Although a strategic plan was developed while he was here, Pastor Chichester cites its development and implementation as the greatest challenge he faced while at Toronto West. During his nearly eight years with us, Pastor Chichester was able to work on some of his own personal goals. One such goal was the commencement of his doctoral studies. With the goal of working to extend the ministry of the church further into the community firmly planted in his mind, Pastor Chichester incorporated that into his studies, and the community in which the church is located become an integral part of his doctoral dissertation. While he has many memories of being at Toronto West, Pastor Chichester fondly reflects upon the fiftieth anniversary celebrations as

Page 9 Eye on TWest Newsletter Volum his most cherished memory. The monthly celebrations allowed for the retelling of the rich history of the church, which for Pastor Chichester, was one of the greatest lessons he learned while pastoring the congregation. The past eight years have been busy ones for Pastor Chichester and the Toronto West congregation. However, some of the highlights of the years that he would like to be remembered for include among others, the paying off of the mortgage, and the establishment of the streaming of the services. Pastor Chichester counts it a blessing to have been at Toronto West and would like to remind the church that the journey continues. Indeed it does as the Adventist community in Toronto and abroad continues to press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus (Phil. 3:14). We will miss you.

A Trip Down Memory Lane by Michael L.J. Scott TORONTO THE GOOD : T-WEST THE BEST A lthough I was very apprehensive about my trip to Toronto in October, 2013, I still love/ appreciate the learning I experienced while I sojourned in that clean, laid-out city. Most of that education was the result of being enrolled in that excellent educational institution - West Toronto SDA Church. So long before I landed at Pearson International Airport, I travelled down memory lane. The 401 highway took me back to October, 1972, when Aldon George took me to the church on that Wednesday night and I met people who became a part of a group of Caribbean people who became my mentors, tutors and friends forever. The likes of Ron Francis, Monica and Neto Nash, Juanita and Dennis Marshall, Luan and Willie Cadogan, Gwennie and Eglon Wilson, Jane and Leslie Williams, Oneta and Aldon George, Brenda and Sebert John, Royson James, the Hutchinson s, Wayne Mc Clean, Pamela and Collis Ambrose, Benjamin Wilson, Earlyn Alexander, Gary Nurse, the Birkette s, The Messiah Singers, Winston Grant, Sammy Mc Kenzie, Gloria and Milton McKenzie, Deana Easie, Pauline and Thoywell Kennedy, Robert Kennedy, Bro. DaCosta Mc Donald, Lionel Frampton, the Woods, the West Toronto Cricket Team, Angela Prescott- Wheeler, Narvello St Hillaire, Jenny and Rex, Molly St Hilaire and Kent Spooner, Pearl and Winston (Cherrie)Thomas, Andy and, and, and. What a long list! Trust me, it's long! Let me get down to the meat. West Toronto taught me how to cope with studying at the tertiary level at York University, University of Toronto School of Education and their graduate School of Education, (OISE). I will never forget Eglon, Dennis, Willie, Netto, and Carolyn Joy Cooper. They took the time out and schooled me and made the pathway like the Baber-Greene smooth. By the second year of my undergraduate degree, I was like Christopher Cross sailing. I cannot forget the long night when Eglon and I sat down and wrote that paper on "Participatory Democracy in Trinidad and Tobago". West Toronto taught me building construction. All those Sundays at 10 Harvie Ave. repairing that great heritage center, home for many a migrant black from wherever, were very instructive. Ben Wilson gave me a construction job one summer and it was another building construction class. I 10 Harvie Avenue learnt a great deal with him. I worked with Collis Ambrose in Washington DC and on his Toronto home. More classes: Aldon, Collis and Cherrie taught me to drive in now and on the highway. West Toronto taught me about the brotherhood of the saints. Those Sabbath day greetings, the Sabbath School and the sermons - good, not so good, and excellent- were all part of the menu of total development. So were the social interactions - on Saturday nights in the basements, the brams with the Messiah Singers or those lovely Summer picnics to those scenic and picturesque parks. West Toronto taught me how to organize, follow, think outside the box and play a leading role in the church and wider community. Royson James and Willie Cadogan as AY leaders hallmark quality-, Eglon Wilson, Jane Williams and Dennis Marshall excellent Sabbath School Superintendents: - Bro Robert Taylor, a modern day Moses; Wayne and I can certify to that. West Toronto gave me the opportunity to lead their children. That JAY and AY band with the Birkett sisters, Gary Nurse, Andy and Abi, the Leacock sisters, the Seales brothers, and Curtis and Wayne. What a composition! I did not have a clue at the beginning about playing brass and wind instruments but they played and they took the forefront. We were able to combine all skills and the rest is history. It would have never happened if the church did not allow that idea to germinate. No heavy hand was used, no dictatorship from the board room or the AY department. Roy and Willie saw it could work and we worked it. West Toronto taught me music. Under the baton of Juanita Marshall, Earlyn Alexander, Sister Daphne Lewis, and Angela Prescott- Wheeler and the then radical music of Reseculata with Melville Peters, my musical mustard seed blossomed. The Messiah Singers - what a group! West Toronto taught me critical consciousness. It was Mars Hill, our Areopagus, our Capital Hill, our Westminster, the Roman Senate. Participating in unplanned debates after

AY horned my literary and verbal skills. It also built brotherhood. West Toronto taught me how to be my brothers keeper. We were a family back then. We networked long before that concept became a marketing tool. We informed one another about jobs and opportunities not shared willingly to Caribbean immigrants by potential employers. We shared information on funding for tertiary education, on the latest development in the world church especially on the happenings south of the border. We played cricket, soccer and table tennis. In the church basement on Saturday nights, we watched our children play floor hockey and roughed it up just as the Maple Leafs. We took them ice skating and watched them as we froze standing in the open winter. We even did Gyap. We had Sousou and Partner. We did stuff. Although we were immigrant SDA s in a dominant different culture that was so different to our own, all these doings made us strong and gave us the strength for tomorrow. As I spent that awesome Sabbath in October 2013 at the new church at Albion I saw that tomorrow in the children of the 1970 s, that second generation with their children commanding the respect and dignity that God, as no respecter of persons, has provided for all men, be it immigrant or Canadian. I saw a church of immigrant descendants expand into Perth Avenue, Malton, Central, Parkdale, Apple Creek, Heritage and other SDA churches where all people of whatever Diaspora can find shelter and refuge from the bitter winters of social Canada while having and living the Advent hope and Mission. Whether they like it or not, West Toronto has changed the landscape of Toronto and I have no regrets being a little screw that helped tighten that grip. We even did Gyap. We had Sousou and Partner. We did stuff. Michael L. J. Scott Ordinary People Page 11 The West Toronto pioneers came to Canada as domestics, labourers, and students. Their children learned hard lessons, and thrived. 12 Page 12 Stewardship Feature Still Thrifty at 50? By Sherene Cole-Watson 50 years! Half a century. Hitherto hath the Lord brought us. The message is still the same: He s coming back again! Be vigilant, be sober. Trust and obey. Faithful is our God. Practice systematic benevolence. Systematic what? Ah, tithes and offerings. Here we go again. But alas it s the whole duty of man. Really? It s my money, isn t it? Even in the 60 s the debate was on about whether to return tithes on the gross pay or on the net pay. Opinions differed but the principle was embraced. That debate still rages. But wait a minute. Isn t stewardship about the management of the resources that the Lord has entrusted to us, including our time, talent, money, our bodies and the environment? 50 years ago the focus on stewardship was all about the money. We were preached at bring ye the tithes into the storehouse; will a man rob God? It is true that money continues to be the biggest competitor with God in our lives. How we choose to manage finances has a direct impact on how we manage the other four stewardship resources. What happened to the old time values of: thriftiness and satisfaction; godliness with contentment would indeed bring us great gain. They seem to have been replaced by the need for more and more, and more. It was SC Schofield who said: don t show me the tattered pages of a man s bible; instead show me his chequebook & I ll show you where his values lie". Some would contend that the more things change, the more they remain the same. Really? The past 50 years suggest one evolution that is debatable. Behavioural trends seem to indicate that church goers switched from being stewards to consumers. Instead of focusing on what can I do for the Lord or for others, the focus now seems to be what can the church do for me in exchange for my financial contribution. It s like that investment we make in the stock market with the expectation of a tangible return. Many want to give to get rather than to give in obedience to the Lord s word. Have we ever stopped to think that the windows of heaven pour out not only monetary blessings. Are you enjoying good health? Did your child ace that test? Did you miraculously avoid that collision? Great is God s faithfulness, and morning after morning new mercies we will see when we order our steps in His word. Haggai 1:7-9 paraphrased says Consider your ways! You look for much, but behold, it comes to little; when you bring it home, I blow it away. Why?, declares the Lord of hosts. Because of My house which lies in ruins while each of you runs to his own house. Ever heard of a pocket full of holes? You know that money with which you plan to do something specific and something more urgent presents itself you and you fall deeper in debt? Hmm, did you return your tithes first? Food for thought! So where do we go from here? It is not too late to shake it off, stomp on it and rise a little higher. Purpose in your heart to store up treasures in heaven, wisely manage all five resources entrusted to us: our time, talents, the body, the environment, and yes, our money. In doing so, you will contribute to advancing the Lord s cause to hasten His return. For He has told you, O man, what is good: and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God? Micah 6:8. Fifty years later: The message is still the same: He s coming back; trust and obey; be faithful.

Reflections on our Humble Beginnings By Bernice McDonald Page 13 The 1960 s and the 1970 s were a time of new beginnings for Caribbean immigrants migrating to the land of promise and bringing with them their diverse cultures, religion and aspirations. During this time there were not many -- if any -- public social venues in Toronto; there was no GTA then. We contributed to the building of the GTA, and so many new immi- grants on arrival learnt about a bunch of black folks of Caribbean origin meet- ing or worshipping at Shaw Street on Saturdays. 14 Toronto West Soccer Champions by Richard Balfour (Coach) Page 14 The Sovereign Soccer League began in May The aim of the league is to bring to the GTA quality, organized, low cost, clean and safe soccer for all Christians. Toronto West initially started to form a soccer team in 2010, where we practiced and played a few friendly matches with a few GTA churches. But there was no league. So when the Sovereign Soccer Club approached us we had guys that were willing and ready to play. On June 2 the start of the season we lost our first game. We figured out were our strengths and weaknesses were. Our adjustment proved right as we made it to the finals. On July 14 th the first game was played between the All Stars and the GTA Pastors. Pastor Palmer expressed his thanks this way thank you for doing this and for giving me an opportunity to fellowship and exercise (I badly needed that). The sun was hot and excitement was in the air as both team played with heart and soul. TW supporters cheered and sang as TW was holding on to a 2-1 lead. When the final whistle blew jubilation and excitement filled the air as Toronto West became the Sovereign Cup Champions for Thank you to Holly Watson (Manager), Anthony Brown (Asst. Coach) and Adrian Constantin (Captain). We are looking forward to 2014 were we can continue to use this tool of witnessing for the Lord. Reflections Left to right Anthony Donna, Earl, Holly, Richard, Sovereign Representative and Adrian T-West also took the championship in all sports categories: Soccer, Football, Volley ball and placed 2nd in Basketball, Hats off to you T-West!

My Story: A Matter of Convenience by Aquelia John Page 15 I 've been a Seventh-day Adventist from since childhood. But, because I always felt that the Lord could be served on any day, I ended up attending a Sunday church for 6 years. When I was a full time student (pre/post secondary), I never found the time -correction, never made the time- to read my Bible. I depended on my mother -- then perceived as a lecturer; but, now as an inreacher- and church sermons to understand my faith. I felt that those were enough. My poor mother -- the prayer warrior that she is -- had tried so hard to convey the importance of Bible studying. But, I only learned of its potency and value once I moved out and was on my own. I moved to Toronto in 2006 and immediately began looking through the phone book, for a SDA church that was within walking distance from where I lived. But, much to my chagrin, could not find one... in English. (The listings went by the church name and not denomination.) I did not yet take out a library membership to gain access to the computers (the Internet) which would have made the search so much easier and efficient.) Then, my Sunday church going friend invited me to his church which is where I remained until October (Oddly enough, when I stepped into the church for the first time a voice said, "Turn around! This is not your church. You will regret it if you remain.") There was no one but my friend and I at the door. Soon after being baptised at this church, I became a leader, in fact, a very, very busy leader. I had more responsibilities than I could have counted. Satan had kept me so busy that I completely forgot to resume my search for a (local) SDA church. But, then, I began thinking, "I am working for the Lord. So, this cannot be wrong. I must be in the right place." But, now and then, the Spirit would try to talk to me, saying I have to leave. But, I was too busy to listen. Same excuse as when I was a full time student. Only now, the excuse was church work (Sunday church work.) I was too distracted. Fortunately, during that same year (2006) I had taken up Bible studying. I always felt God's presence; but, it got more intimate after I started to dedicate myself to regular Bible studying. I dedicated myself to reading the Bible from cover to cover and did. My second answer to turn around arrived in 2008 after a three day fast and prayer. But, this time, the excuse was, "I don't want to offend anyone by leaving." Finally, October 2012, I could tell God's patience was wearing thin with me because after another three day prayer and fasting, His answer was clear and ominous. I responded immediately. I began attending T- West in October 2012 and got baptised (with water), March Funny, my first official visit to T-West yielded an unknown brother saying, "Stay. You won't regret it." He only knew that I was a first time visitor. Now, I'm here, willing to stay, and ready to work. The commute is not so bad and the stigmatization imposed on the area has been lifted from my eyes. So, all I can say is I'm glad I finally "turned around." Sunday worship was convenient. Sabbath worship is divine (destined). Remember the Sabbath Day to Keep it Holy Ex. 20: 8

Eye on TWest Newsletter Page 16 Passing the Torch by Eileen Ross Volume 1, Issue 3 I n 1928, at the Olympian Games in Amsterdam, the Olympic Torch represented purity and perfection. It was passed from runner to runner to signify the continuation of the journey. And so today, the journey of a spiritual torch continues, setting the goal for the youth and the entire church to perfection changed lives, strengthened families, and inspired youths. As Pastor Clarke took us through the history of the torch, he encouraged us to recognise that it is time for a transition, to carry the torch to the New Jerusalem. As we embrace the hope of tomorrow, our youths must be willing and able to take the torch and run with it, he stated. On Sabbath, July 27 th, Toronto West passed the Torch to their youths in an auspicious ceremony. Karen Bingham highlighted the fact that T West has a legacy of youth focused ministry. She took us back to a family oriented place where there was no TV, no cell phones, no internet. A time where they had to provide their own entertainment of socials, drama clubs, slide shows. These activities bonded them together. Karen then took us down memory lane by asking the question, What is you favorite AY memory? Here are the responses and advice respectively of the participants. Bernice McDonald: Morning Watch / Memorise your bible verses Norman Brown: MV impacted his life with leadership skills / Stay in the church: the church molds you. Nadine Thompson: AY equipped her with leadership skills for life / Get involved; do not allow someone else to take your seat. Tricia Merraro: Socials and gospel skate at Scooters / Do not let anyone stop you from praising your God. Lean on God and a trusted friend. Paul Jones: Wonderful camping trips and dumplings / This is your church, stay in it. Marsha Birkett: Ingathering / Get involved so church will not be boring. Royson James: Leadership skills are acquired in church / Act NOW Andrea Shoga: Taking the children to camp in Quebec / Mentor at least one child. Pastor Henry Wright, the guest speaker for our Sabbath Celebration, concluded the evening s program with encouraging words for the youth and prayer.

Legacy Banquet 4th August, 2013 by Johanna L. Bannis celebrate the journey of 50 years from Shaw Street Page 17 E legance. Class. Sophistication. Style a night that would surely be worthwhile. Ladies looked beautiful in fancy shoes and pretty gowns, while the gentlemen looked dapper in bowties and button-downs. For those of you who were not able to attend, and missed out on this wonderful dining and entertaining experience, let me tell you what transpired... Young as well as old, male as well as female, couples as well as singles, all came together to celebrate the culmination of the 50 th anniversary celebrations. The evening began with a welcome from our witty hosts, Janice Anderson and Greg Birkett. Following this was an impressive fountain of sparklers if one stopped for a moment, one might have mistaken it for a mini-canada Day display! With such a dramatic beginning, what other marvels were we to expect? With anticipation, those who had taken their seats waited for their taste buds to be tantalized, whilst being treated to the smooth background sounds of the live band which included Toronto West s own Dennis Hall on the keyboard. While guests chatted away at their tables, they expressed to me the joy of having the opportunity to Celebrate the journey of 50 years from Shaw Street to Albion Road, being able to support the A short play by Yvonne Rodney and Adrian Constantin gave us a snapshot of pioneer life in the early 60 s, reminding us that there were many challenges to be faced in particular cultural differences and sadly, racism. Despite this, however, we were able to see that through their own determination, and God s leading, they continued forward. Throughout the evening, we were treated to not one, but two, brilliant comedians - Jay Martin and Sabu and judging from the peals of laughter that rang out in the banquet hall, they were very much appreciated. To finish off the evening, a special song was rendered by Angella Wheeler, Sylvia Stewart and Marcia Thomas about banana trees, an undisputable reference to Toronto West as the mother church, which gave birth to daughters - Perth being the eldest - over the years. All in all, it was an exquisite evening - well-planned, well-attended and very much enjoyed; a perfect way to conclude Toronto West 50 th anniversary celebrations. By Johanna L. Bannis

Page 18 Baptisms, Baby Dedications & more D ecember 14 was a very special day at T- West. There were 5 babies dedicated and 2 young precious souls dedicated their lives to God. This brought to 35 the total number of babies blessed in and praise be to God for the 28 who gave their lives completely to Christ through baptism. I By: Eileen Ross Toronto West is very active in ministry, as demonstrated by its continued growth. In this our year of jubilee, today, December 14 makes exactly 50 years since this great church was formed. Toronto West loves its seniors, and Josephine Thompson and Kathleen Allen who celebrated their 83rd year, and 89th birthdays, were honoured with lovely bouquets of red roses. This was especially touching as we were also celebrating Seniors day. The senior choir, decked in their red and black brought a festive aura to the sanctuary, and their melodious voices brought praises to our hearts and to God s throne. Special recognition was given to Dolly Kong and her associates, who faithfully prepare delicious and nutritious meals for the seniors, each and every Sabbath. Thank you Sister Dolly and Company. On a more solemn note, five of our members peacefully went to sleep in their graves in Sisters Laura Crooks, Winnifred Mitchell, Anita Matthews, Amleth Bennet and Rosanna Cuffy. Sleep in peace dead sisters; we are almost home. Their were three weddings in 2013 at T-West! What a day! What a year! What a celebration! What a Tra-La La!

Straight From the Heart of the 50th Anniversary Chairperson Reported by Johanna Bannis A s chair of the 50th Anniversary committee, Bro Wayne McClean described the 50th celebrations as good, and in his estimate, all events (from January to August) went equally well. Giving the church the celebration she deserved was the task this was 50 years, and a lot of important events and celebrations had occurred during this time. As the committee met and discussed important events, they struggled to narrow down 50 years into 8 months, but with God s guidance, they were able to come up with and plan for specific events representative of Toronto West SDA Church. Bro Wayne mentioned that it was sometimes a little overwhelming and understandably so, seeing the meticulous planning and organization that went into each event. Despite this, though, it was an anniversary well celebrated and in his words well worth it. The thing that stood out most when talking to Bro. McClean was his insistent praise for his fellow committee members, remarking that he would not have been able to continue on without their help and support and in his words, a leader is only as good as his team. Although the 50th anniversary celebration may have come to an end, let us follow the example of the committee Royson members, James at the but Gala more on importantly August 4th. the Bro. words Royson of 1 Thessalonians James described 5:11, the Therefore 50th anniversary encourage celebrations one another awesome and build and each inspiring. other up, Of just course, as in planning fact you on are such doing. a large-scale would require an immense amount of as organization, and naturally everything did not always go as planned.
