Directions for Use In the Kids Choir Program at Community Bible Church, we begin with worship and devotional time every week. It is so important that kids have spiritual reference on each song they sing. The inclusion of Scripture into each lesson helps them hide God s Word in their hearts. God told us to worship in spirit and truth, and through an interactive devotional time, you can teach them about God and how to connect with God. We often use the songs we are currently learning as worship material, or supplement with well-known worship songs that correspond to the spiritual truth being taught that day. You will be amazed at how centered the kids become through worship time. It sets their hearts on Jesus, and you can accomplish so much more during the rest of your rehearsal time. You can settle down a rowdy bunch of kids with an energetic praise song followed by a meaningful devotion and heartfelt time of worship. And your programs and performances will become an extension of the worship they do week after week. When we plan intentional times of Scripture and teaching, it will build a foundation in them. So don t be afraid to give up rehearsal time for worship. The Scripture references are kid friendly versions compiled from the New Living Translation, The Message Bible, and GOD S WORD Translation. You may substitute other translations, especially if you come from a tradition of Scripture memory in a certain translation. I hope these devotions will spur your creativity and bless your kids! 2 Unto You For unto us a child is born, unto us a Son is given: and the government will stand on His shoulders: and His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. (Isaiah 9:6) How do we find out what s going on in our town, our state, or our world? Of course, these days you can sit down at the computer and find out what s happening RIGHT NOW clear across the world. A long time ago, there were many simpler ways to find out the latest news, but one way was the town crier. He stood on a street corner and yelled out important information. He would ring a bell and holler, Hear ye, hear ye, then tell his important news. He wanted to get people s attention. We don t say, Hear ye, hear ye, but our song Unto You starts out with, Hey! I ve got some great news! We want to get people s attention and tell them about Jesus! The Scripture that this song comes from was written seven hundred years before Jesus was born. Isaiah was a prophet, which basically is a preacher who tells the future. It s obvious that Isaiah was prophesying about the birth of the Messiah. And what wonderful names He gave to Jesus! Jesus came to be the answer to every problem and to fill every need. We can find good advice in God s Word. The Holy Spirit will speak to our hearts, and we need to always be listening. God is wise, and when we learn to walk in His ways, He takes us step-by-step into the good life He planned for us long ago. He IS our Wonderful Counselor! The Lord is our Father in heaven, who created us, who develops us, and who helps us become who we were meant to be when we obey Him. This Scripture is more than just a dusty promise. We can experience the Lord as our Counselor, our Father, and our Peacemaker. The Baby that was prophesied to come seven hundred years before He was born was born for each of us! Let s pray and thank God for His wonderful gift of Jesus. Pray: Holy God, Thank You that Your Word proves itself over and over. You told us that we would have a Messiah long before He came. Jesus, Your Son, was born, and He is still busy today counseling us, fathering us, and bringing us peace. Thank You that He was born to save the whole world, but thank You the most that He was born just for me. Amen.

Celebrate the Birthday People of all nations, celebrate God! All colors and races, give hearty praise! May God fill you up with joy and peace and the life-giving energy of the Holy Spirit, so you overflow with hope! (from Romans 15:7-13) Don t you love birthday parties? It is so much fun to celebrate someone s life with great food and fun games, and to bless that person with gifts. The best part of parties is spending time with your family and closest friends. And Christmas is the best birthday party of all, because we are celebrating the birth of the Savior of the world! If we were going to throw a birthday party for Jesus, what would it look like? Jesus would probably like playing games and eating good food, just like the rest of us. But the best part for Him would be just hanging out with us. Because that is why He was born to make a way for us to be with Him forever! Our sin kept us apart, but Jesus connected us back to God. Now that s something to celebrate! But somewhere along the way, it seems we forgot about Jesus in all the activities of Christmas. Many people that celebrate Christmas don t even know the real reason we have Christmas. But we do! Today s Bible verse tells us to celebrate God, who will fill us with joy, and life, and energy, and hope, until we are overflowing. And when we overflow, we spill God into the world around us. So let s celebrate Jesus! Pray: Dear Jesus, Help me to understand that Christmas is a wonderful celebration of family and friends, and gifts, and traditions, but it means nothing without You. I want You to be the most important part of my Christmas. You are the Savior of the world. You are the Savior of my heart. Please be the Lord of my life at Christmas and all year through. Amen.

Away in a Manger But now you have been united with Christ Jesus. Once you were far away from God, but now you have been brought near to Him through the blood of Christ. (Ephesians 2:13) What was the first Christmas song you ever learned to sing? Was it Jingle Bells? Maybe it was Silent Night or Away in a Manger. Away in a Manger is like a lullaby sung to Jesus about Himself when He was a baby. If you could sing to the baby Jesus, what kind of song would you sing? Our version of Away in a Manger has a new part in it. We will sing this directly to Jesus. Look at the words. They are very simple. Be near me, Lord. I need You, Lord. The whole reason Jesus came as a baby was to restore relationship between God and man. An easier way to say this is that Jesus came to mend the separation we had from God when sin entered the world. God wants to be near us. One of Jesus names is Emmanuel, which means God with us. God wants to be near us all the time, every day. That s one of the things worship does. It makes us close to God. When we thank Him for all He has done and praise Him for all that He is, He comes near us. The Bible tells us to enter His gates with what? That s right, thanksgiving and praise. If someone says good things about you and thanks you for what you do and who you are, you like to be around that person, and so does God. When we tell Jesus we need Him, He comes running to be with us. He gave up His life so that we can be with Him anytime we call out His name. Pray: Dear Jesus, Thank You for coming into the world as the baby in the manger. Thank You for growing up the mighty Son of God here on earth. You are powerful and great, but you love little children like me. You want to take care of me and bless me. I need You, Jesus. Help me to feel You near me when I worship. Thank You that I can connect with You when I worship. Your presence brings me peace. I like to be close to You. Amen.

Wonderful Savior But you, Bethlehem, are only a small village. Yet a ruler will come from you; His family tree is ancient and superior, His beginning is eternal. (Micah 5:2) What if the president of the United States was coming to our town? We would plan all kinds of receptions and banquets. We would get reservations in the best hotel. We would show him all the interesting places. We would hire a LOT of police officers to make sure he was safe at all times. We would alert the TV stations and newspapers to announce his arrival, and they would do stories about his visit. It would be a BIG DEAL. The town of Bethlehem didn t do this on the night Jesus was born. As a matter of fact, the townspeople acted like they had never heard that this could happen. The city was crowded because of the census. (That s when people showed up in their hometown to be counted.) It was so crowded that there was no hotel, no home, no place for Jesus to be born. You know the story. Jesus was born with the cows and the sheep in a stable quite the opposite of a BIG DEAL. And Bethlehem had been warned. The prophet Micah told Bethlehem, hundreds of years before this time, that a King would come from there a King with no beginning and no end, a King who was superior to all who came before and all who would follow after. And even though Bethlehem was just a little village, it became the throne of God on that first Christmas night. Even though you are just a little boy or a little girl, the King of kings and the Lord of lords wants to live inside of you. If God can come to earth as a baby, He can certainly come into your heart. Although it seems unbelievable, God chose Bethlehem, God chose a manger, and God chose you. Don t feel unimportant, because, to God, your heart is fit for a King! Bethlehem was not ready for the King, but we can be. Pray: Lord, make my heart Your home. Be on my mind, be in my words, be in my actions, and be in my dreams. Help my heart be a place that You belong. Help me to live a holy life so that You are blessed living inside of me. Amen.

Alleluia, Amen Though He was God, Jesus did not demand to be treated special. He made Himself nothing, and came down to earth as a man. He lived a selfless, obedient life, and then died a selfless, obedient death on a cruel cross. Because of His obedience, God lifted Him high and honored Him far beyond anything or anyone, so that all creatures in heaven and on earth will bow in worship before Jesus and call out praise that He is the Lord of all. (Philippians 2:6-11) Close your eyes and think about how perfect heaven must be. No sin. No tears. No worries. No problems. No homework. We can t really imagine how wonderful it is. Jesus lived there. And He left heaven, where angels and special creatures worshiped Him 24 hours a day, where He was the center of attention, where He had no limits. He came to earth and arrived in a human body that would suffer and bleed and die. That should be a pretty bad deal for Him, right? But He did it without complaining. He did it on purpose just for you. How many times are we upset because we think we re being treated unfairly? How many times do we demand our own way? Jesus WAS treated unfairly, even though He didn t deserve it. He took our punishment. That s something to be thankful for! And one day when He comes to take the believers to heaven to live with Him forever and the whole world sees Him, we all will admit that Jesus is the only true God. But we can be worshipers that gladly choose Him now. You gave up Your throne to be with us, Mary and Joseph s tiny One. How could it be that God would come? Alleluia, Amen. Born in a manger for the cross, You bled and You died to save us. You rose from the grave victorious. Alleluia, Amen. Pray: Jesus, I can t believe You gave up everything for me. And You did it because You loved me. And You still love me today. So I praise You, Lord. And I worship You forever. And I thank You, Lord. Alleluia, Amen.

Noel Shepherds were in the fields near Bethlehem, taking turns watching their flocks. When an angel appeared and the glory of the Lord filled the area with light, they were terrified! The angel said, Don t be afraid! I have good news for you! Christ was born today. This is how you will recognize Him: You will find an infant wrapped in cloth lying in a manger. Suddenly, a large army of angels appeared, praising God by saying, Glory to God in the highest heaven, and peace to those who have His good will! When the angels left, the shepherds said to each other, Let s go to Bethlehem. They went quickly and found Mary and Joseph with the Baby, who was lying in a manger. When they saw the Child, they repeated what they had been told about Him. Everyone who heard the shepherds story was amazed. Mary treasured all these things in her heart and always thought about them. As the shepherds returned to their flock, they glorified and praised God for everything they had seen and heard. Everything happened the way the angel had told them. (Luke 2:8-20) Noel simply means a Christmas song. So when we sing, The first Noel the angel did say, Was to certain poor shepherds, it s a fancy way of saying that the very first Christmas carol was sung by angels and heard by shepherds. Those shepherds didn t know they would be a part of God s plan. They had no idea that we would still be reading about them, singing songs about them, and dressing up as them for Christmas programs thousands of years later. You never know when God is going to show up in a powerful way and make you a part of history. You never know how God is going to use you to reach others. The shepherds were simple people doing a simple job. Their faith grew as they recognized and felt God s glory shining down, and heard and saw the angels. And in faith, they followed the angel s directions to find Baby Jesus. In faith, they told the story to Mary and Joseph, and probably all their friends and family for years afterwards. In faith, they praised God and gave Him all the credit because God made it all happen exactly like He said it would. God can take our simple praise, our simple offering, our simple faith, and our simple actions and do amazing things with them. He can make the simple historical. If God can use a bunch of raggedy shepherds, He can certainly use you. Pray: God, the shepherds remind me that You use ordinary people to tell Your story. Show me how to be a part of Your story. Help my faith to grow. Help me obey You and always give You the credit. Help me see Your glory shining down and praise You. Amen.

Joy to the World! Shout to the Lord, all the earth, break out in praise and sing for joy! Sing your praise to the Lord with the harp, and with trumpets and horns. Make a joyful symphony before the Lord, the King! Let the sea and everything in it shout His praise! Let the earth and all living things join in. Let the rivers clap their hands in glee! Let the hills sing out their songs of joy before the Lord. (Psalm 98:4-9) Do you know what the word Christmas means? It means Christ s Mass. Do you know what a mass is? It is a Latin word for worship service. So Christmas literally means Jesus worship service. If everyone took that seriously, the way we celebrate Christmas would dramatically change. The words of the favorite Christmas carol Joy to the World! The Lord Is Come were written by Isaac Watts in 1719, and he based them on Psalm 98. Over a hundred years later, in 1839, a church music composer, Lowell Mason, set the words to music. Joy to the World! is one of the most popular Christian songs of all time. In Psalm 98, all of creation is commanded to sing and shout to God, to break out in praise and sing for joy. And we are supposed to do it LOUD, like a wonderful symphony with all the instruments going full blast. When we say Merry Christmas to someone, we are really saying, Have a happy worship service for Jesus. And that s what Joy to the World! is all about. It reminds us that heaven and nature sings for Jesus and asks that every heart makes room for Jesus. Is there room in your heart for Jesus? Do you worship Him with everything you have, going crazy like a symphony orchestra? Psalm 98 doesn t say, Sing if you feel like it. It says, just do it. Sing. Shout. Worship. Celebrate the King. Because He has come! Pray: Dear Lord, thank You for Christmas. I want my life to be a living worship service for You. I want to bring You praise along with the oceans and the rivers and the mountains. I want to make room in my heart, in my life, in my daily schedule for You. Help me to set aside special time to spend with You. Help others see Your joy in me. You are my King. Amen.

Christmas Hymn Here I stand at the door and knock. If you hear Me calling and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal as friends. I will invite everyone who is victorious to sit with Me on my throne. (Revelation 3:20-21) Do you like to go camping? Sleeping outside is really fun when the weather is nice. Have you ever been on a trip when your parents forgot to make hotel reservations and all the hotels were full? What if you got to your destination and the hotel owner said, I don t have any rooms, but you can sleep in the garage, or the pool house, or the storage shed out back? Can you imagine what it was like for Mary and Joseph to get to Bethlehem and realize there was no place for them to sleep, and Mary was about to have a baby? I don t know if you have ever slept in a barn, much less the feed trough, but it isn t really the best place to lay a newborn baby, especially the Savior of the world! Jesus was born in a simple place, and He wants to be born in our hearts in a simple way. God sent His Son into the world so that we could see Him in the flesh. We needed someone to show us God s love, and to be the substitute so that we would not have to pay for the bad things we do. The Baby in the manger grew up to be the One who died on the cross to save you from your sins. When you come to the time that you realize you need a Savior because you are aware that you are unable to live a perfect life, then you re ready to ask Jesus to come into your heart. Instead of making a barn His home, He wants to make your heart His home. You can pray this prayer and ask Jesus into your heart: Pray: Dear Jesus, Thank You for coming to the earth. I realize that I am a sinner and that my sin gets in the way of being close to You. Thank You for dying on the cross for me. Take away my sins and come live in me. Come and make my heart Your home. You are now my Savior. Help me read the Bible and do what it says. I love You, Jesus. Amen. Now go tell another Christian (a parent or grandparent, a teacher, or a pastor) that you accepted Jesus as your Savior today! They will help you get started in your new life with Christ.

Happy Birthday, Jesus You love Him even though you have never seen Him. Though you do not see Him now, you trust Him, and you rejoice with a glorious, inexpressible joy! (1 Peter 1:8) There are so many wonderful traditions surrounding Christmas. Think about your favorite Christmas food, your favorite Christmas activity, your favorite Christmas tree. Think about your favorite Christmas movie. Is it The Polar Express, How the Grinch Stole Christmas! or Home Alone? What are your favorite Christmas cookies? When does your family open presents Christmas Eve or Christmas morning? Traditions are important. They build families. They give us something to look forward to and something to remember. They make us feel safe and loved and bring us joy. But if all those things went away, we would still have Christmas, because Christmas is not about those things anyway. Christmas is about Jesus. And Jesus will never go away. We get busy with all those traditions, parties, present buying, and decorating because we are trying to make Christmas happen. We try to buy Christmas. We try to make the joy come. But Jesus IS joy. Jesus IS peace. Jesus IS hope. Jesus IS love. Christmas is really about worship. Remember the Christ s Mass, the worship service for Jesus? It is awesome to enjoy the blessings God gives us with our families and friends and to make memories. But the center of Christmas is Jesus. And He wants our time, our love, and our worship. We can t open up Jesus in a present on Christmas morning. But we can remember to thank Him for His goodness in the middle of the busyness. We can schedule activities that include worship. We can even praise Jesus on our own! Like the Bible verse says, We can t see Him, but we love Him and we trust Him, and we feel the joy He brings. Happy Birthday, Jesus is one of the simplest Christmas songs ever written, but one of the most profound. That means it reaches a very deep place in your heart. It reminds us of what s really important about Christmas: Jesus only Jesus. Tell Jesus how much you love Him right now. Pray: Happy Birthday, Jesus. I m glad it s Christmas. I love tinsel and lights and presents, but the real gift is You. I love carols and bells and my favorite traditions, but I want to make this Christmas all about You. I really love You, Jesus. Amen.

The Light Has Come Arise, shine, for your light has come. And the glory of the Lord has risen upon you. (Isaiah 60:1) So shine as children who have Jesus light in them. (Ephesians 5:8) One of Jesus names is the Light of the world. And light is pretty important. Of course, without it, we can t see. Also, plants can t grow without it. And plants make the oxygen we need to breathe and the food we need to eat. So we wouldn t grow either. Since Jesus is the Light of the world, we need Him! The whole world needs Him. It s up to us to tell people about Jesus. When Jesus is your Savior, you have light inside of you that can brighten up a classroom, a soccer field, a home, a neighborhood. That s right! God wants to start using us. We need to let God be in charge of everything we do, because He has chosen each of us to do important things for Him. No one has been left out. You can be a peacemaker. You can be a friend. You can be an encourager. You can be kind and patient and helpful and loving. You don t have to go around preaching (but you can if God gives you the opportunity!). The most important thing is to be the light of Jesus to let His love shine through your actions. Christmas is not just one day. Jesus came, and lived, and shined. And now He lives in us. So shine, as children who have Jesus light in you, all year long. Pray: Dear Jesus, Thank You for shining Your light into my life. Thank You for choosing me to do great things. Help me see the things I can do for You. Help me see the people that need Your light. I want to shine for You. Amen.
