NTRAMURAL LEAGUE STARTS TEAMS WTH FANCY NAMES SHOW UNFOR- SEEN STRENGTH Our league got under way last week and some very exctng games were played. We have several strong teams entered ths year and t looks as though t s gong to bo a battle from start to fnsh. Due to the fact thut another league s gong to be formed by the Freshmen team, our ntramural league wll play Monday and Wednesday nght nstead of Tuesday and Thursday as t was announced prevous to ths tme. The Freshmen league wll play Tuesday and Thursday nghts and prelmnary to home games. Ths league should be an nterestng one. n the past not much nterest has been taken n ntramural basketball. Ths year we have open house. Grls! Come MO your boy frends play. Brng your roommate along. She can help you yell. Ths week presents a week of "tuff games". The schedule s as follows: Zephyr's vs B Booster, 7:00 Mon. Cagey Cagers vs Sewashers 7:00 Mon. Baughman's Rams vs Y. M. C. A. 7:45 Mon. Delh vs Boyer Sure Shots 745 Mon. Fve Bros, vs Chefs 7:00 Wed. Several members of the ndustral Arts class have been askng ths queston. We understand that n the dstant past several ron park benches were purchased for use on the campus. Snce ther arrval they have rested securely n Shatzel Hall where no one can use them except on partcular occasons. We recommend that these useful artcles be placed n convenent places on the campus durng the summer months, so that tred students could rest between classes, or enjoy a chat wth fellow students. Perhaps ths would be damagng to the moral welfare of our student body. Would t be better to have couples seated on benches on the campus, or have them hke to the cemetery to rest on the tombstone of a Wood county poneer? Durng the wnter months these same benches could be moved nto some of our much frequented buldngs. A few benches n the downstar's hall of the Lbrary would provde a (Contnued on page 2, col. 3) McNght Tells Of Harrson Mrs. McNght, a charmng negro women who spoke at the Church of Chrst last Sunday nght, knew Rchard B. Harrson, the orgnal "Lawd" n the play, "The Green Pastures". Many years ago her grandfather and Mr. Harrson played Shakespearean roles together. Mr. Harrson told of an nterestng ncdent concernng hs part n the play. He was nstructed to carcature "de Lawd" and make the part as rdculous as possble. Beng the type of man he was, he refused to portray that character as anythng but noble. The producers decded that the only thng to do would be to let Mr. Harrson play the part the frst week and then gradually let hm out of the cast. However, the crtcs statements came out, t was evdent that Mr. Harrson had won a rght to play "de Lawd" as he wshed. For, to use Brooks Athknson's words as they appeared n the New York Tmes, when Gabrel sad "Gangway foh de Lawd God of srael and de Lawd entered, the play was a success." nter-socety Formal Dance s Colorful Wentz Drects Event The annual nter-sororty formal dance was held n the men's gym last Frday nght. The local orchestra played behnd a trells fence decorated wth ballons n the colors of the dfferent sorortes. The sororty nsgnas and colors were placed on the balcony around the dance floor. Soft lghts and the swrlng evenng gowns n raony colors made a pleasant pcture of grace and movement. As the frst formal dance of the year t was a decded success, due largely to the efforts of Mss Evelyn Wentz, presdent of the nter-sororty Councl, and general charman of the dance arrangements. CHRSTMAS PLAY TO BE PRESENTED THS EVENNG The Kndergarten - Prmary Club s presentng an orgnal Chrstmas play n the audtorum at 7:30 on Wednesday, Dec. 9. The play, enttled "Chrstmas Eve", s composed and enacted by members of the club. The theme of the play s the anmaton of dolls n a nursery on the nght before Chrstmas. When your "Goom-bye-Ozze" wrote two weeks ago, bewalng the fate of the vctms of "those Englsh crtcs who profess Seely," hs orchds were certanly msplaced. Anyone can be a slave drver, so let's transplant the orchds to the breast of the poor dumb cluck who spends ffty hours on a two hour course. After a tour of the crtcs, have been unable to fnd record of ths worthy now f he wll just kndly step forward. That the crtcs named are demandng more work than others, may be true. They arc faced wth recommendng these same student teachers, n a few weeks, as able teachers. f ths background has been neglected f newer methods have superceded these wth whch they are famlar f dscplne problems rear ther ugly heads- the crtc must make hs choce. He may turn a blnd sde toward these defcences, and "be easy on the student" and as a result f the practce s long contnued, school offcals wll recognze students traned by Mr. X. as ll nformed and careless. The crtc wll be forced to wrte a false recommendaton and rsk hs own poston, or he must wrte a true one, and run the student's chances for a job. The other alternatve s for the crtc to demand a standard of effcency, below whch he wll not recommend any student. f the student s lackng n many ways he wll be very busy; f he s capable and well nformed hs work wll be much lghter. Ths standard, mantaned for a length of tme, wll make pupls of Mr. X, preferred above others, because superntendents wll have become famlar wth hs standard. And so we ask What prce effcency? Must we always roast n effgy those who do most to help us? f the majorty of students need more than they can get n the tme allotted for practce teachng, ther quarrel s wth the currculum. They are f may borrow the phrase, "Throwng ther crutches at the doctor." Now lttle cyncs, f you can make a better world go forth and do t! Dre Prophecy.. Grave problems are facng cvlzaton today. The fate of the entre earth les n the acton of maybe a dozen men. Ths jury wll decde the future of you and me. They have been charged by the great Judge to mantan peace and to promote happness; however they are gnorng ths charge. These problems are grave because we, of ths modern machne age, are not cvlzed. Ths jury s greedy, selfsh, athestc, and uncvlzed. We, the prsoners at the bar, awat ther answer. t s not what we have done that s convctng us but ths nsane jury s so blood thrsty, so full of hatred and ntolerance that the verdct s certan to be gulty gulty of what? The publc, yes the publc, s gulty of gnorance and stupdty. We slde through lfe payng lttle attenton to affars of serous mport and totally gnorng the lessons of hstory. t s a sn to be gnorant and "the wages of sn s death". We, students of the world, must thnk. Let us strve for peace and the freedom to seek happness. We don't want war so let's do somethng about t. Put asde your trval thoughts of athletcs and socal affars and grades and what not. Learn the truth of what s happenng. We are no longer chldren! Students, you are charged to wake up and thnk so that we may "wake up and lve". Edtor's Note: t s well for the reader to bear n mnd that the Bee Gee News s a vehcle for unversty opnon. Conference held n at Albon College, Albon, Mchgan. The confer- (nee convened on Frday evenng at 7:30 o'clock. The outtnnd.ng personalty of the conference was Sherwood Eddy. He spoke at the openng sesson on the subject "The World We Arc Lvng n". n ths lecture.mr. Eddy presented a very realstc vew of the foregn stuaton and the probable consequences that are nherent n t. Th' re were two other speakers worthy of note Dr. Hall, a professor at Albon, who has made several trps to Europe and who lectured n Europe last summer, gave a basc analyss of the atttudes of European youth. Stanley Hamlton, a welfare worker and Quaker who has been workng n the mnng sectons of southeastern Oho and n West Vrgna, dscussed the poston of the mner n our present socal and ndustral lfe. The conference was a huge success n every way. The total number n attendance was around 225 ncludng students and faculty. 5 PAGE 4 Sportrats n Revew B. G.'s Past, Present Athletc Scene Coach Paul Lands, head boss of the Falcon court squad wll trot out hs basketball contngent Saturday njfht for the frst tme, when hs Orange and Brown charges clash wth Bluffton College on the Unversty court. t's the season's opener for the Lands quntet and the redoubtable cage mentor wll place one of the speedest and cagest teams on the floor n the hstory of the Unversty. Lands' squad wll be lackng n heght, but what the Falcons are mssng n sze they can captalze on speed and decepton. Headng hs squad of "speed merchants" s lttle tow headed Clff Conrad, captan and star of the Falcon clan. Conrad wll fll n a guard spot on the rear lne along wth Jm nman, who s fresh from grd fame. nman and Conrad, n makng up the rear guard, presents a fne defensve par. Conrad's speed and aglty wll be used n the fust breuk whle Bg Jm's sze wll help tremendously n the back court n gettng tht rebounds. Glenn Smth, elongated center from Bloomdale s leadng the canddates for the pvot poston. At the forward spots, Lands s stll undecded as to hs entry. He may gve Norman Jones and Harold Conrad the call and then he may swtch hs choce to Harlun Knney and John Collns. Wth the excepton of the annual Rose Bowl classc, and a few other scattered grd frays, the football buglers have sounded ther proverbul "taps" on the '..'H grd scuson. However, after the pgskn hus been put to bed and tucked n for another campugn, one cannot help but look back on a season that was chuck full of upsets that were a-dme-a-dozen and admre the excellent job turned n by Harry Ockerman and hs band of Falcons. Paens of prase can be penned for Wayne Stewart, the pledrvng fullback, and for lttle Matt Dotson and Dale Herbert, tht two dmnutve guards. All t'.ul can be sad of them can't be enough. But ths partcular pece of typewrter pourng s about one of those slent rocks of Gbraltars James nman, or *~ Try our HOT LUNCHES c Parrot Women's Brown Bootees j $2.98 Women's Snow Shoes $2.98 EBERLY'S SHOE j STORE Letter stll, Capt. Jm nman clmaxed hs greatest year n football ths yhbt Harry Ockerman wll vouch for ths. So wll each and every member of the Falcon quad. Beng named captan of the Falcons set some knd of a spark n the manly bosom of Jumes nman. He played as one nspred durng the greater part of the campagn. Responsbltes of leadershp have a- roused hm to magnfcent efforts. n the publc prnt you read more about the bouncng Wayne ; S'wal than Jm nman, hs runnng mate. The reason s obvous. Stewart s what the newspaper men call "good copy." On the grdron, Stewart's head-on slashes shoots towards the spectacular, whle Capt. Jm's chores are of the conservatve und less-spectacular type. OF the grdron as well as on the chalked greenery, Capt. Jm has proven hmself a glorous leader. You could compare hm wth any of the college leaders n the country und fnd that the comparsons would be mghty close. He moves about among hs mates and frends offerng words of encouragement and prase. He has asked nothng for hmself but has gven all for hs team. Yes, let the paens of prase flow for Wayne Stewart, who played an mportant role n the Falcon's success and for lttle Dotson and Herbert, who rose to the occason to fght off oncomng rushes and brng a glorous year to the Unversty cumpus.
