Lovett MEMBER OF THE COLUMBA SCHOLASTC PRESS ASSOCATON RATES: 10c PER COPYj $1.00 A YEAR "QUO VADS?"-THE ANSWER And so another chapter s endng for the class of Four years ago we were the anxous freshmen; today we are about to graduate. Ths, then, s the tme to stop a moment and to fgure up our assets. Behnd us stretch the treasured patterns of sunlght on the quadrangle, of vy leaves rpplng n the wnd, of snapshots taken besde snow fgures, of tenns played early n the mornng, of glee club concerts, and all the vared, happy actvty that enrches college lfe. But far more mportant than memores of ephemeral treasures, far more stable and endurng, there n the past was bult a sold foundaton for lfe. We do not graduate not knowng where we are gong. On the contrary, we are traned for a specfc job-teachng. There s no doubt about what we want to do. Where are we gong? Why, we go to serve n the army of teachers who beleve wth us n the motto "Not to be mnstered unto but to mnster." N SELF -DEFENSE Just as they called those post-world War years the "roarng twentes" some people now refer to the "fumng fortes", the mplcaton beng that our generaton s over-fond of sputterng and defeatst gestures. t seems to be the accepted thng for each successve generaton to crtcze the next. That s one of the prvleges of growng older. Wth tme comes a soldfyng of values and pont of vew, and the ndecsve f10underngs of youth, are, perhaps, rrtatng to those who beleve they have found the way of lfe. t s probably tme that the dsturbed economc and socal state of the world today has frghtened many of us wth the grmness of securng a place n the world. f we have momentarly retreated durng the secure days of college to a vantage place from whch we shake an mpotent fst at the menace of our machne age, t s not a sgn of weakness. t s smply an nnocuous form of revolt aganst a force that even our elders do not qute understand. The test of those who graduate n the fumng fortes wll come n the furous fftes-and there s no reason to thnk they wll be found wantng. To the Senors (wth apologes to Shakespeare) Frends, students, senors, lend me your eyes. 'wrte to. prase ths school, not to censure t. The good that ths college has done wll lve after t; The evl that you have done alas wll lve also-n the records.', So wll t be wth all schools. The noble presdent has told you to be ambtous. Snce justly so, t cannot be a grevous. fault, But grevously have many of you answered t. Here, under leave of my school and the rest, Come to wrte ths admonton. CAMPUS COMMENT May 24, 1940 Pctoral Exhbt Traces Stages n College Growth The teachers are your frends wemeanng and just to you' ' They also bd you to be a~btous. The presdent has sad so, and he S an honorable man. Ths school has sent many students on to fame, Whose records show that they worked wth a wll: Can amhton then be wrong? When that the report cards have come out. some have wept; Whch proves one thng Ambton alone s not enough. t should be backed wth good hard work. The teachers say "Be ambtous But do your assgnments, too" The presdent has sad so, and he s an honorable man. wrte ths not to approve or dsapprove what ths school has done, But what have you done and have left undone. So here am, wrtng of what know You all do love ths school, not wthout cause; What cause wthholds you then to mourn your leavng t? o judgment! be thou far when judgng these senors, Whose mnds are n turmol wth pageant rehearsals And plans for other commencement actvtes. Frends, you have read my thoughtsbear wth me; My heart s n ths school, wth my memores, And, though wat, t comes not back to me. Campus Comment Receves Typographcal Award New dstncton, unacheved before n the thrteen years of ts exstence, came to CAMPUS COMMENT. when t was awarded a specal thrd place a ward among schools of educaton for typographcal excellence at the Columba Scholastc Press Assocaton Conventon. Pctures found here are vared, rangng from a pcture of the old orgnal buldng n 1840 to the last football team n Some of the pctures are valuable. There s one of whch there are only two copes n exstence. One of these hangs n the offce of Superntendent Gould n Boston, and the other was lent to the school by Mr. Archer Nckerson of Boston. t s a pcture of the baseball team of What makes ths pcture partcularly note-worthy s that every one of the men s now ether a superntendent or headmaster of a school. There are also pctures of the great fre whch destroyed the old buldngs n Near them can be found eyewtness descrptons of the fre, wrtten by students of the college at that tme. n the lobby may be found pctures of some of the old graduatng classes. Also n the cabnet are a par of oldfashoned glasses whch were consdered "de rgeur" for the up-to-date teachers of the last century. Faculty photographs are also of nterest, as s the pcture of Mss Elza Woodward, after who m Woodward dormtory was named. Present, too, are pctures of the grls n the gym costumes of that perod. The vy March s beng planned by Elsabeth McLaughln, Vce Presdent Edwn Randall, Secretary MESSAGE from S. C. A. LEADER S. C. A.-just what do the three letters mean? Of course, the o b v 0 us answer-"student Cooperatve Assocaton". t s the largest organzaton on the campus-every student s a member -therefore, t s rghtfully called a "student organzaton". But what a bout the "co-operatve"? t s the sprt of complete co-operaton that s the goal toward whch we constantly strve. You have chosen good leaders for next year, people who wll work hard to arrve nearer ths end; but t can't be reached by them alone. Every student of the college must exert hmself to cooperate to hs utmost n every way. t s to you, underclassmen, that leave the challenge-each of you should realze your mportance as a member of the organzaton, and should do your part n makng t, completely, a Student "Co-opera tve" Assoca ton. t has been a truly wonderful experence for me to work as the leader of the S. C. A. One couldn't ask for a more loyal, wllng, or Jean Whtng, and the Class Ode has been selected by Nance Marquette and Ellwood Jenness. Fun for all at the class pcnc wll be devsed by Grace Wall, charman, rma Wall, George Harrs, Edwn Randall and John Tobn. The Class Gft has been selected by Geneveve Doherty, Martn Kllory and Dave Levenson. GREETNGS FROM PRESDENT KELLY TO THE CLASS OF 1940 Educaton of a few years ago was of an entrely dfferent type from that of the present tme. Formerly t was Greek, Latn, and mathematcs wth lttle else. Today t s everythng that touches lfe. The pace set n these days s vastly more rapd, as the rewards to the successful are vastly more rch than of old. He who expects to succeed by seemng rather than by beng, who reles on appearance rather than on substance, to such a person cannot pont an outlook of promse. The lfe of achevement s a voyage through seas often stormtossed, and the shp whch has as ts hull the flmsy veneer of apfl~arances, and not the stout tmber of purpose and sold acqurement, cannot long survve. n college you prepare for the battle of lfe, as n a gymnasum you strengthen the muscle, qucken the eye, and cultvate the power of nstantaneous decson-a. tranng that afterwards wns success on feld or grdron. He who would get nto the battle of lfe untraned s already half beaten. He who would wn success, whether at playng croquet or governng a kngdom, must lay the foundaton for that success by ntellgent, laborous tranng. There s no short cut, no possble certfcaton to success wthout honest and fathful work. The student who has evaded hs dutes and preparaton n hs college work has cheated only hmself. He has msled no one. He wll fnd hmself greatly handcapped n the work of hs chosen vocaton. "What s the hardest task n the world?" "To thnk", says Emerson n one of hs essays. f you have made honest use of your opportuntes here, you wll leave your Alma Mater wth a more precous possesson than a dploma or a degree-the power of thnkng. To you, the members of the class of 1940, and the poneers of the! next century n the hstory of Brdgewater Teachers College, may extend every good wsh for success and happness. John J. Kelly, Presdent hard-workng councl, than the one wth whch 've had the pleasure of workng. The members deserve a great deal of credt and apprecaton for ther successful efforts. Together we have strven to make our college "bgger and better than we found t"; beleve we have succeeded! t s our councl of that has the honor of closng a bg chapter n the hstory of Our college. t s your councl of that wll have the honor of begnnng a new and mportant chapter. May your pages contan a year of great success and a chevement. Good luck and best wshes to all. Ba1'bara Taylor, Presdent of S. C. A.

Dr. Arnold, from down south, has wrtten three books. They are "Problems n Amercan Lfe", publshed n 1928; "Co-operatve Ctzenshp", publshed n 1933; and "Buldng Our Lves Together", by Banks and Arnold, publshed n Mss Low has wrtten many books, but most of them are for chldren and adolescents. A partal lst of Mss Low's books follows: "The Adventures of Bunny Bobtal"; "Peggy Moran"; "n ~toryland"; "Maureen O'Day"; and "Maureen O'Day at Glengarff". One would naturally expect a hstory teacher to wrte a hstory book, but Mss Smth does not run true to type. She hasn't actually wrtten any books of her own, but she has helped Professor Kerney Adams read and proof-read hs "Study Ad to Harry Elm e r Barnes' "Hstory of Western Cvlzaton." Mr. Hunt has wrtten a book called "Communty Arthmetc". n case you are nterested, a copy of the book may be obtaned from our lbrary. Mr. Doner, too, has wrtten books. One of hs handwrtng manuals s used by schools n the entre Domnon of Canada. One of hs better manuals of handwrtng s called "Everyday Handwrtng", and s publshed by the Zaner-Bloser Company. Dr. Maxwell, strange as t seems, has not wrtten a book on Englsh Lterature, but has an unpublshed Doctor's thess on hs favorte author. t s called "Dckens As A Socologst". Dd you know that Mss Dow was a poet? She s, but the nearest her poetry has ever gotten to a publsher's offce s her waste-basket. Then came Mr. Huffngton.
