2 LIBRARY STATE COLLEGE BOWUNO QRBEN, a VOL. XVIII. BOWLING GREEN STATE COLLEGE, DECEMBER 13, 1933 No. 13. CITIZENSHIP EDUCATION In hs remarkable autobography, the journalst, Lncoln Steffns, says that the nspraton whch changed hm from a reckless rah-rah boy to a serous student was the realzaton that nothng had ever been done yet, or done rght. The greatest book had not been wrtten nor the most beautful pcture panted. He found he had the opportunty, net to study past perfecton, but to mprove upon what exsted. If the opportuntes for materal and cultural accomplshments n hs day fred a young man's enthusasm, how much more nsprng wll be the vson for that future generaton whch shall tre of the lure of mechancal nventons we can't manage socally, and shall turn ts attenton to the real work of cvlzed man the buldng of a socety ft to lve n. Socal ntellgence today s just breakng through the murk of greedy, grabbng ndvdualsm. "The forgotten man" dea made Roosevelt the people's canddate, and, n my estmaton, the recent upsprngng of human compasson s the most dstnctly elevatng nfluence Amerca has felt snce Wlsonan dealsm was thrown nto the dscard. We are on the way toward an understandng of what ctzenshp means. There are two reasons, t seems to me, why ctzenshp has been at a low ebb. The frst s that as lfe becomes more complex and people more multtudnous the ndvdual seems less mportant and therefore altrusm and humantaransm are dscouraged. To cur mnds the drownng of ffty Irshmen s bgger news than the death by flocd of ffty thousand Chnese. Why s one Irshman you never knew closer to you than a thousand equally unknown Chnese? What the entre Irsh naton does s poltcally nsgnfcant. Chna could wreck the whole world. Lord Bryce has ponted out that although the ndvdual ctzen feels less mportant as hs country ncreases n sze, actually he becomes more powerful. Then, you wll be more mportant than any ndvduals who have ever lved on the face cf ths earth! A lack of good ctzenshp on your part wll destroy cvlzaton, f we bequeath you any. Unfortunately we do not tran up good ctzens. Our second weakness s that, n spte of our learnng, we apply less psychology than does many a savage trbe that never heard the word. Cvlzed people are always tryng to substtute some "system" for horse sense. It seems more scentfc. The psychologst wll tell you that f you wsh to be a good ctzen you should frst make a frm resolve and a ceremonous be- (Contnued on page 6, col. 1) QUIPUS COLUMN The Key s more than a record of the year's events; t s an expresson of the unty of the student body and ts ablty to formulate and carry out a defnte project. In our classrocms and n our nformal dscussons, we theorze about and agree that the greatest need of present socety for any socety, s for unted, coordnated group thought resultng n effectve, purposeful actvty. Moreover, we are preparng ourselves here ether to become group leaders, to attempt to brng others to feel and yeld to the deal of ntegrated, drected actvty for the realzaton of socal goals; or to so apprecate socal values and the value of cooperaton, that we may more easly adjust ourselves to the groups wthn whch we lve our lves. "But, what have these abstractons to do wth the Key?" ycu ask. The Key s one of the few nsttutons en our campus whch s bult upon group ntatve and support. To all of us who scorn the man who fals to practce what he preaches, and who sncerely dealze cooperatve group projects, t s a challenge to get behnd ths year's Key and support t some by contrbutng ther tme and talents, and the rest of us (most of us) by speakng optmstcally for, and jonng n demandng and supportng a Key. Upon the popular enthusasm and actve support wth whch we buld our Key, upen what we put nto t, depends the qualty and meanng of the book to each student. Howard Brathwate Three Kays Sponsor Dance The Three Kay Sororty sponsored the Snowball Dance, an all-college functon, Dec. 9, n the Men's Gym. The decoratons of the gymnasum were smple but attractve, snowballs, evergreen, and a real snowman. The dance programs, whch carred out the dea of the party, were n the form of lttle snowmen. Refreshments consstng of cder and pop-corn balls, "snowballs" were served throughout the evenng. Marrage That marrages of college graduates are, en the average, 25 per cent more successful, was ndcated n answers to the questonnare recently crculated by the Unversty of Chcago among 6,000 young marred couples. Another nterestng fact gleaned, was that the deal perod of engagement was from three to fve years. Cty couples, t was stated, fnd t more dffcult to lve harmonously than those n the country. The Maverck, Tonkawa, Okla. CIVIC ENLIGHTENMENT Our country seems to be experencng not only a depresson but also a perod of transton to a new knd of socal order. We do not yet vsualze that order, but ens thng s obvous, we are n our restlessness turnng a crtcal eye upon the whole scheme of thngs socal, poltcal, and eccncmc. The students of our colleges not only share ths state of unrest, but they must assume responsblty for leadershp n fndng solutons for our vexng cvc problems. Presdent Hutchns of the Unversty of Chcago sensed the problem and last summer warned the framers of the recent Democratc platform that f the old partes dd not shed some of ther tradtons they would be submerged by a rsng tde cf new leadershp the youthful thnkers of our colleges and unverstes. It has occurred to the wrter that all of us would be profted by a seres of artcles by dfferent students and teachers on some such general topc as "cvc enlghtenment." Surely t should gve us some concern, for example, to be told that our systems of local government represent an ox cart cvlzaton. Or perhaps some of our dormant neurones are aroused by Brsbane's statement remndng us that the state of Mchgan wth a populaton of less than fve mllons has forty-three thousand publc offcals, whle England wth more than thrty-seven mllon people has only about two thousand publc offcals. Such challenges can be extended ad nfntum. Some of the questons whch have occurred to the wrter as beng of nterest are as follows: 1. Has the old county unt of government been outgrown? m 2. Do voters need a program, of cvc educaton? 3. Is our multple track system, of taxaton the best? M, 4. What wll be the effects n Oho of: the new Home Rule Amendment? 5. Do we need a gold standard for money? G. Should the proft motve be removed from all busness and ndustry? 7. After repeal of the 18th amendment what? 8. What can be done to combat the feelng of futlty among votng ctzens? o o Several colleges n the Unted -States are older than the Unted States, to wt: Harvard, Wllam and Mary, Yale, Prnceton, Washngton and Lee, Columba, Rutgers, Salem, Transylvana.

I obtaned by frst glmpse of Knute Rockne on the campus of Notre Dame at South Bend, Indana, a few years ago. He was talkng to several students at the tme and I was unable to get a good look at hm. However, I dd notce the ntent nterest hs lsteners gave hm whle he was talkng to them. It was at Frankln Feld n Phladelpha that I saw the real Knute Rockne. Notre Dame was playng the Unversty of Pennsylvana n what was doped to be a close, hard fought game. My seat was drectly above the Notre Dame players' bench and I was able to observe all of ths great coach's actons. Before the game started he was extremely nervous. He walked out on the grdron and talked to each of hs players, examnng ther shoes and equpment and seeng that they were n proper shape to play. As the game got under way he was not quet a mnute but walked up and down the sdelnes, a cgar n hs mouth, hs hat pulled down over hs eyes, seemngly about to explode from nervous tenson any moment. When Notre Dame began to wn he became somewhat calmer and sat down on the players' bench. There he remaned the rest of the game wth the excepton of a few tmes when there was somethng wrong wth the Notre Dame attack. Then he was on hs feet agan, pacng nervously. Whenever a substtuton was sent nto the Notre Dame lneup, Rockne offered the lad encouragement and sent hm nto the fray wth a pat on the back. The same thng occurred when a player was taken out of the game; the Notre Dame mentor consoled hm and saw that he was well taken care of. It was planly evdent that the members of the Notre Dame squad dolzed Rockne, and t was easy to understand why Notre Dame turned out such excellent football teams under hs coachng. 4 PAGE 3 TRUE EDUCATION QUILL-TYPERS WHAT IS COURTESY? : : The followng artcle appeared recently n the Falmouth Outlook, Kentucky end may be apprecated by students of Bowlng Green College who are seekng a "true educaton." "True educaton must be the nstrum3nt by whch all problems are solved. True educaton deals absolutely wth understandng as ts goals. False educaton has the acquston of knowledge as ts goal. True educaton enables the student to realze ntellgence. False educaton cultvates an ntellect... Intellgence s recognzed by smplcty, whch s never dvorced from truth. There s nothng complex n ts operatons, nothng techncal. Intellgence s not proud of ts accomplshments except as they orgnate n truth. Meekness s the manfest human qualty whch dsplays ntellgence. It s absolutely necessary that our people begn to seek true educaton that they may acqure an understandng of thngs n the world today as they really are. False educaton has establshed false values and has hung, as t were, a great cloud over our people. A man or woman may be book-wse, hence ntellectual, but he s not for that reason ntellgent. College degrees... the systematc pursut of book learnng do not provde an ndvdual wth ntellgence. They merely gve hm convenent workng tools whch should cooperate wth the utlzaton of ntellgence... Untl educaton shows thought the way to sprtual truth and eternal and joyful qualtes of mnd and character, educaton wll be lackng true usefulness, and the people of the world wll contnue to flounder n the nets created by ther own materalbased mnds, caught n the complexty of ther own creaton. Inherent n each ndvdual are sprtual qualtes whch are often overlooked. There s no boy or grl, man or woman on earth today who does not possess ntellgence* yet there are many poor, msguded creatures who are unaware of ths possesson. Hence ntellect calls them stupd, dumb, half-wtted nsane. Educatonal leaders must revse ther systems so that they wll awaken sprtual qualtes. We vew the result of false educaton today. Persons of ths world are unhappy because of false educaton. Materal reasonng has gone wld and has run amuch, smply because there have been no manfest sprtual qualtes n many of our people to restran the madness of the ntellect. We must cease reservng thngs sprtual for Sunday, whle we "lve accordng to other standards durng the week. We must forsake a double standard. Complexty of thnkng engendered by materal educaton must gve way before smplcty of thnkng and sprtual truth, awakened nto realzaton by true educaton. Truth s always clear, plan, and smple, (Contnued on page 6, col. 2) The Qull Type Commercal Club enjoyed r. Thanksgvng party at the home of Professor E. G. Knepper, faculty advser, en November 28. After a short busness meetng, Mss Nelle Ogle, faculty advser, took chag3 of a program ncludng contests and games. The evenng was termnated wth a danty luncheon beng served by Mrs. E. G. Knepper and her three sons. Twenty members were present. » SEVEN SISTERS Last Tuesday evenng was an eventful evenng at the Seven Sster House. That evenng marked the clmax of the term of pledgeshp for one of our number and the begnnng of a term of pledgeshp for seven prospectve Seven Ssters. The formal and mpressve ntaton servce was read for Inez Gorsuch, after whch the actves welcomed her as a sster. The pledge servce was read for Kathleen Amos, Portage; Alyce Davdson, Custar; Wnfred Dunpace, Bowlng Green; Valeska Lambertus, Pleasant Cty; Yvonne Steffan, Bettsvlle; Janet Wood, Gerard, Pa., and Grace Zegler Bowlng Green. The Seven Ssters are lookng forward to many happy relatons wth these new pledges. Plans for the annual Chrstmas party are now beng made. o LAS AMIGAS SORORITY We have a full house now! All the grls are back and workng hard. Our seven pledges Edna Arn, Olve Becker, Margaret Henegh, Jane Mercer, Betty Mller, Dorothy Pace, and Martha Schaub have completed ther frst degree. Good work grls keep t up! Medtatons Tcdy n ths world of mprovement and gan When Satan's potent nfluence tends to reman, We need more than ever to worshp and prase, And prayers of repentence and Thanksgvng rase. Amerca's expanded, she's progressed and ganed; Gladdened at sunshne and sorrowed at ran. She has contnued her struggle thru' peace and thru' war, Prasng the uprght and adng the poor. Now that she's down hearted, sad and sore pressed, Pessmstc and warlke, poor and depressed; May she turn from these sorrows and seek for the sun, Look only to Chrst and the cause to be won. Dear Mram: I yam a lonely cowboy and a would-be gentleman. In behalf of myself and other wounded "gentlhomme" I offer ths protest to the co-eds "pet peeves." Frst I dffer n the matter of chvalry that s ntmated as a desrable trat n men. The lades lke to consder themselves equal to men; yet they ask, "Why don't gentlemen extend courteses to the lades such as tppng ther hats?" It s an evdent fact that college men seldom wear hats and have no money to tp wth. The reason they e;.on't walk down the asle ahead of ther guests s because the women gallop ahead and would net be satsfed wth any seat a mere man could pck out. In the restaurant ts embarrassng to have to "say, "One hotdog please, wth water." It seems strange that so much comment was aroused over the phrasngs of ntroductons. I wonder how wde of a masculne acquantanceshp the grls would have f they depended on the conventonal form of ntroductons. Of course a gentleman was "at one tme" expected to rse when a lady entered the room, lay hs cloak n the mud for her to walk on, and other superfluous gestures of respect. Accordng to your artcle, the majorty of the co-eds prefer conservatve dressng n men. Red-necktes are taboo. Yet men are supposed to apprecate women's decoratve creatons whch are chefly patterned after fckle fads. If excuses for lame dancng embarrass the young lades, they have no come-back. What do they expect n answer to those paned glances an Arthur Murray? It appears that the lades who receve the 8 o'clock calls don't fully apprecate the ngenuty of the caller by lnkng hs preconceved knowledge of the results wth the sncerty of hs words. Women's conversatons turn toward the subject of ther wearng apparel, but a gentleman cannot consder ths :as a topc of conversaton because of ts brevty. Furthermore, I yam a lonely cowboy and only wants to know f t wasn't a concesson that nspred your artcle. I close to shave for my eght o'clock date. (Hope she'll be ready by nne.) Gentleman Joe "How dd you get that black eye, Mrs. Hggns?" "Well, sr, me husband came out of jal on hs brthday." "Yes." "And I wshed hm many happy returns." From the Polytechnc Reporter comes the news that a Unversty of Colorado student, tryng to work hs way through college, washed a hundred and ffty thousand wndows n four years. : Besdes boastng ranch grls, desert queens and mnng czarnas, the Unversty of Arzona now has n ts enrollment the granddaughter of Schumann-Henk.

5 m PAGE 4 GENERAL RULES FOR INTRAMURAL SPORTS It s the objectve of the department of Physcal Educaton to have all men n the nsttuton partcpate more or less regularly n some form of physcal actvty. The equpment and facltes are furnshed and all the ndvduals needs to furnsh s the desre and wllngness to take part n some type of physcal recreaton. Every effort s beng made to realze the hghest possble development of the ntramural program. Intramurals offer to every student an opportunty for recreaton n a wde range of sports, many of can be played n later lfe, an opportunty for healthful exercse wth the fun and zest of frendly competton, and wde socal contacts wth other students. The department thnks t advsable to have avalable and readly accessble nformaton concernng the more mportant tems and actvtes of the department. Nne teams ncludng approxmately eght-one grls were formed. Games wll begn the week before Chrstmas. Any grls who have not yet joned a team, but who would lke to take part may report at the Phys. Edu. offce. Watch the bulletn board for practce notces. <> o W. A. A. BASKETBALL TEAMS ARE FORMED Forty new W. A. A. members were ntated at the Sports Supper gven Wednesday, Dec. 6 n the Ad. buldng. Twentytwo old members asssted n the ceremony whch w^s conducted by lone Blessng, presdent of the organzaton. Mss Shaw awarded W. A. A. honors to those members who had earned the requste number of ponts. W. A. A. emblems were awarded to Marjore Armbruster, Wanda DeMongeot, Helen DeTray, Neva Trawatha, and Helen Hastngs. Hope Conrad and Ann Rmelspauch receved sngle chevrons. Vrgna Pollock and Dorothy Zeg, double chevrons. Whle the hghest W. A. A. honor, a slver pn, whch s gven only to grls who have won 1,800 ponts, was awarded to Mllcent Gamber. Other features of the program were a tap-dance gven by Katherne Duffy; two rrngs, "Sylva" and "The World s Watng for the Sunrse", by Evelyn Wentz, and an rmusng skt, "A Fatal Tragedy", n whch Helen Brooks played the part of the Kng, Mae Myrce, the Queen, Lllan Hankel, the handsome Duke, and Lenore Slva, the beautful Prncess of the Land. Margaret Herrot gave a strkng performance n the role of the curtan. WOMEN'S ATHLETICS MORE POPULAR HERE THIS FALL Women's athletcs are growng more popular n Bowlng Green State College. Perhaps the grls feel the athletc urge mere strongly ths year. Perhaps ths year's Freshman crop has rased the percentage cf women athletes. In any case, a comparson of the W. A. A. records for the fall of 1932 and the fall of 1933 shows that many more grls have taken part n athletc actvtes. Thrteen more grls went out for hockey ths year than last year; twenty-one more took part n tenns actvtes; three more n archery; and four more n soccer. Hkng and ndvdual sports showed a slght decrease ths year. Grades at the Unversty of Chcago are used merely to provde a record for the student n case of transfer to other colleges. >_,. V * :«..
