1 Knights of Columbus March 2009 St. John de Brebeuf Council County Rd. 20 Kingsville, ON. (519) Chaplain s Report: Dear Brother Knights and families, We have entered the season of Lent. The word Lent comes from a word meaning spring. There is also a verb form of the word meaning, lengthen, referring to the lengthening of days at this season. Spring is when we experience the renewed blossoming of the world of nature. Lent is a time of preparation for a renewed spiritual life. Fasting has been a part of the observance of Lent from the beginning. Fasting is a penitential discipline and is designed to strengthen the spiritual life by weakening the attractions of lesser things. It was practiced in Judaism and was commended by Christ both by example and by teaching. The forty days of Lent, which exclude Sundays, probably derive from Jesus forty days and nights in the desert. May we truly experience the gift of Christ s graces as we journey throughout these 40 days. Happy Lent, Father Rick Janisse 8233 EXECUTIVE: CHAPLAIN Fr. Rick Janisse GRAND KNIGHT Ted Rocheleau DEP. A time for repentance, a time to strengthen our faith and of fasting and remembrance of our Lord who gave up much; that WE may have everlasting life. Lent is a time of abstinence from meat on Ash Wednesday and on Good Friday but we should also try on every Friday to abstain from meat as we offer this and all things that we have given up for Lent. It is good to pray the rosary or offer prayers from the heart daily; that we may show our faith, hope and love in our God. This Lenten season, let us remember and keep in our prayers those less fortunate in our community and those on our pray list. Including Andy Repko, Anthony Rebkowec, his mother Lorrian, Cathy Rimer, Ed Cushieri, Ron Royal, Danny Nelson, Casey Moody, Guy Riendeau, Mark Simpson son in law of Ivan Holmes, Margaret Jezierski wife of Andrzej (Andrew) Jezierski, Joseph Boutros brother of Tom Boutros, our Advocate Patrick Kierans, Fr.Elie, Fr.Chris. 3 Deputy Grand Knight's Report. Brother Knights, on February 17 th our First Degree Team welcomed 16 new members into our Order by conferring these men with the First degree of their Knighthood. This degree took place at St. Anthony s Maronite Council #13797, in Leamington and this Council received 10 new members that night. After the installation I congratulated the, GK Elias, on his recruiting 10 fine men; men of differing ages and differing backgrounds, each of them with their own reasons for joining. There was one gentleman that was joining with his Son and it reminded me of when I joined; I also joined with my Son and completed all my degrees with him. It certainly was special for me and I knew how this gentleman was going to feel after this night was over. The GK was gracious and thanked me for my kind words but reminded me that there was a very real and serious problem that is occurring throughout the Order. The problem was not getting new members to join, this was not that tough; BUT keeping them was a very different story, and he is right. We in our own Council do a very good job of getting new men to join us; but are we going to be able to keep them??? I think that the answer is YES, but we have to work at this; we simply can not ask someone to join and then never pay them any attention. It is not only the candidate s proposer s duty to keep this new member in our Council; it is every one s responsibility. The Council is not made up of just one person; it is made up of many; so please let us keep our new members by not forgetting about them once they join. It would appear that our Wild Game Dinner is a sell out, there can t be more than a dozen tickets left, so great job to the Chairmen Dan McGuire and especially Ken Bosse for their hard work on this annual event (The Big One). Please consider helping out by either saying Yes when I call or by calling me first and volunteering. Thanks. As I will be stepping down as Breakfast Chairman after this last breakfast (April 5 th ) I am looking for a Knight to take my place, if interested Please see me at the breakfasts or contact me. I can get you a police clearance form; see the previous bulletin for more details. Don t forget the recycle box in the church basement, let s save the environment and help another by getting them a wheelchair, as I have also stated in previous bulletins. Fraternally, Vivat Jesus. Dan Orawski phone kofcdan@gmail.com Notice of Motion: A motion to budget $650 for the annual Children's Christmas party by Larry Everaert. That a donation not to exceed $600 be made to Canadian Legion Branch 188 to support the Troop Morale Fund by Dave Gelinas THE SQUIRES REPORT... After a lengthy search we finally found out from the Provincial Board where the award for our 1st place Circle Committee Award Plaque was. It is a well deserved accomplishment for our squires and the Knights who participated in the Blue Mass that we had at our church. It will be presented to our circle at the next meeting March 9th by our District Deputy Rick Renaud. I would like to ask all our Counsellors as well as any other Knights to come out to the presentation at 7 pm at our hall. On April 18, the squire s will be hosting a bowl-a-thon; all are welcome to come and have some fun and help us win the trophy. More details will follow. I don t know about anyone else, but I was greatly impressed at all the squires that came out to the Goofy Chilli night we had at the hall. In the 16 and under goofy golfer category, we had Mario Badircea as the winner with a reputable score of 45 and for the 16 and over winner of goofy golfers, we had Reg Morin with a score of 43. We also wanted to let you know that we pray the rosary at the church on the 5th of every month at 7 pm. All are welcome. And finally, this month s writing contest entry is from Jonah Ross: I have become a squire and am charter member for 2.5 years. I joined because my friend was in it and it sounded like fun. I like helping society. I like helping out at the church and squires events. I ve learned that helping society makes you feel good knowing that you are helping others and I get to do it with my Knights of Columbus 8233 Page 3

4 friends. I might become a knight this is because I can do more with bigger fund raisers and help out more people. The best time I had as a squire is when we had our Golf Tournament. The writing contest will be judged from 1 to 10 and all the knights get vote on this either by or in person at the next General meeting. ESTO DINGUS (be worthy) Chief Counsellor Steve Benson 2. We want to say a big thank you to this family for all they do. Darryl is one of the top notch police officers in Kingsville and Jennifer teaches at St. John de Brebeuf School where she actively supports and helps out the youth of our community. Jennifer also led the Children s Christmas play this past year. They have been active in our parish and in many different events. You will find Darryl assisting most often with the knight s breakfast. Lauren is involved in the school choir and sings at the school Masses. Fraternally, Greg Coulter Pro Life News This Lent, from February 25 to April 5, 2009, a number of Canadian cities will participate with more than 125 cities across North America and around the world, joining together for the largest and longest coordinated pro-life mobilization in history -- the 40 Days for Life campaign. The mission of the campaign is to bring together the body of Christ in a spirit of unity during a focused 40 day campaign of prayer, fasting, and peaceful activism, with the purpose of repentance, to seek God s favor to turn hearts and minds from a culture of death to a culture of life, thus bringing an end to abortion in America. 4 Lives Possibly Saved in Only Two Days at 40 Days for Life Vigil in Ottawa (LifeSiteNews.com) - Fasting, prayer and constant vigil before an abortion centre in the Canadian national capital is literally saving lives, and the vigil only launched two days ago. In Canada, Campaign Life Coalition (CLC) has undertaken the organization of 40 Days for Life vigils at various locations across the country. CLC's Ottawa 40 Days campaign has seen, according to reports from 'ground zero,' possibly four lives saved since commencing Wednesday. Nicole Campbell of CLC told LSN that there are 130 cities in the current campaign all across North America, with another in Australia and two in Northern Ireland. The 40 Days for Life movement has already saved at least 1200 children in total during the last three campaigns, Campbell said. Knights of Columbus 8233 Page 4

5 State Car Raffle For Arthritis The tickets sales have been great as we only have approximately $ worth of tickets left, we will be selling them at the Wild Game Dinner. I want to thank all the brothers who took time to help sell tickets at Zehrs. Curtis District 21 Basketball Free Throw Challenge We had four 1st place winners from our council at the District 21 Basketball Free Throw Challenge: 9 year old boys - Jayden Fetter 10 year old boys - Tino Riosa 12 year old gorls - Isabelle Maheux 14 year old girls - Caitlyn Longmuir Thanks Randy On Divine Mercy by Mike Weston On February 22, 1931, Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ appeared to a simple nun Sister Faustina (Helen Kowalska), bringing with Him a wonderful message of Mercy for all mankind. Saint Faustina tells us in her diary under this date: "In the evening, when I was in my cell, I became aware of the Lord Jesus clothed in a white garment. One hand was raised in blessing, the other was touching the garment at the breast. From the opening of the garment at the breast there came forth two large rays, one red and the other pale. In silence I gazed intently at the Lord; my soul was overwhelmed with fear, but also with great joy. After a while Jesus said to me, 'paint an image according to the pattern you see, with the inscription: Jesus, I trust in You.'" Some time later, Our Lord again spoke to her: "The pale ray stands for the Water which makes souls righteous; the red ray stands for the Blood which is the life of souls. These two rays issued forth from the depths of My most tender Mercy at that time when My agonizing Heart was opened by a lance on the Cross...Fortunate is the one who will dwell in their shelter, for the just hand of God shall not lay hold of him." The official Vatican explanation of the Feast of Mercy is this: According to Jesus, the Feast of Mercy is to be celebrated on the first Sunday after Easter. Jesus is showing to us the close connection between the Easter mystery of man's redemption and this feast. The Feast of Mercy is to be not only a day designated for the worship of God's mercy, but also a day of grace for all people, particularly for sinners. Jesus attached great promises to this feast. One is the promise of complete forgiveness of sins and punishment. In other words, this grace is equal to the one we receive in the sacrament of baptism. It offers a completely new beginning. The image of Jesus given to represent His Divine Mercy is to be blessed and venerated on Divine Mercy Sunday. Jesus told St. Faustina that He is in the confessional, just waiting there for us: When you approach the confessional, know this, that I Myself am waiting there for you. I am only hidden by the priest, but I Myself act in your soul. Here the misery of the soul meets the God of mercy. Make your confession before Me. The person of the priest is, for Me, only a screen. Never analyze what sort of a priest it is that I am making use of; open your soul in confession as you would to Me, and I will fill it with My light. Every time you go to confession, immerse yourself entirely in My mercy with great trust, so that I may pour the bounty of My grace upon your soul. Tell souls that from this fount of mercy souls draw graces solely with the vessel of trust. If their trust is great, there is no limit to my generosity. (from the Diary entry 1602, 1725, 1728) If you haven t had a chance to make your yearly confession, don t miss out on this great opportunity, the feast of Divine Mercy. If we go to Confession and receive Holy Communion, we can obtain the total forgiveness of all sins and the punishment due to them. That means you could go straight to Heaven! 6 Mini-golf and Chilli fun night Report Here is a summary of the golf and chili night: We had approximately 46 people who joined us and we raised 87 canned goods for the cupboards of St. Vincent DePaul. Winners of the golfing were Reg Morin for adults and Mario Badircea for under 16. The chili cook off was a success as we raised $53.23 for St Vincent. Stephen Benson s chilli won the cook off and for his prize he won a beautiful fireman helmet, while his poor wife Wendy won a well deserved gas mask and fire extinguisher. Every one had a "Gassssss" can t wait till the next one! Curtis HELP WANTED... With the difficulties of the automotive, high tech, financial services, housing and pharmaceutical arenas, consumers face significant challenges when deciding how and where to safely place their money. These economic trends hit North Americans squarely in their financial solar plexus. As cash flows constrict, typical consumers may consider risky financial options. They may push for speculative investments in order to generate emergency cash; cancel their life insurance to get at their cash values, leaving their children unprotected should they die; or pull money out of their annuities even though it triggers a taxable event, surrender penalty, or both. Knights of Columbus Insurance provides stability amidst economic difficulties. For more than 126 years, the Knights of Columbus has offered its members financial stability through conservative portfolios of life insurance, long-term care insurance and annuity products. Since its founding in 1982, the Order s primary mission has been to protect families against the financial ruin caused by the death of a family s provided. According to a 2008 Standard & Poor s rating report, The Knights of Columbus insurance program has a stable outlook. Its capitalization is expected to remain extremely strong, and liquidity is expected to remain extremely strong. The Knights also received an A.M. Best Company rating of A++ (Superior) for the 33 rd consecutive year. The Knights of Columbus is one of only five insurance providers in North America to receive the high-test ratings from both Standard & Poor s and A.M. Best, as well as certification from the Insurance Marketplace Standards Association for ethical business practices. For consumers, best practices include doing your research and working with those you trust. If you want a stable and secure insurance company to provide for your family s future, you have found it with the Knights of Columbus.
