2 Chaplain s Good News D ear Brother Knights, wives & families, As I looked around our churches a few weeks ago, I noticed fewer people than usual at Mass. It seems every year, more and more parishioners take the summer off, earlier and earlier. I know there are many legitimate reasons, vacations, sickness etc. but at the same time there are others who only come September through June. It always puzzled me and I wondered if there was anything I could find to address this issue. Lo and behold, I looked to our Pope for his wise words. The following is taken from a homily he gave. I think it s worth reading and passing on. Pope Francis stressed that Mass is where we receive Jesus. It is so important to got to Mass every Sunday because that s where people receive Christ who saves, forgives and unites everyone to His father, church and each other, Pope Francis said. It s also important that children are well prepared for first Communion because..after baptism and confirmation it is the first step toward belonging strongly, really strongly to Jesus Christ. The Pope continued a series of talks on the sacraments of Christian initiation focusing on the Eucharist as the source and summit of the life of the church. In fact, every authentic journey of faith, communion and witness springs from this sacrament of love he said. In his catechesis, Pope Francis said that by celebrating the sacrament of the body and blood of Christ, we participate in the mystery of the passion, death and resurrection of Christ. By making himself broken bread for us, the Lord Jesus pours out to all of us his mercy and his love, renewing our heart, our existence and our way of relating to him and our brothers and sisters. Taking part in the Eucharist conforms us in a unique and profound way to Christ he said, granting Christians a foretaste of full communion with God in heaven, where with all the saints we will have the unimaginable joy of contemplating God face to face. We will never thank the Lord enough for the gift he gave us with the Eucharist, the pope said. It is such a great gift and that s why it s so important to go to Mass on Sundays. Mass is a time not just to pray, but to receive Communion.this bread that is the body of Christ that saves us, forgives us, reunites us to the Father. It s beautiful to do this. Mass on Sundays is particularly important, he said, because it is the day of the resurrection of the Lord, and with the Eucharist we feel our own belonging to the church, to the people of God, to the body of God, to Jesus Christ. (end of quote) As Catholic men, and especially as Knights of Columbus, whether we re single or married, we have the responsibility of being leaders in our homes and in our church. God doesn t take a vacation from us. The life of service to God, family and neighbour is an impossible task without God s grace. We need to be fed regularly at the table of the Lord. In the book of Joshua, the night before he died, he asked the people of Israel to make a decision between serving the one true god, or the pagan gods their ancestors had worshipped. And if you be unwilling to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you Gr and Knight Hello Brother Knights and Families I want to welcome our new Executives and I want to thank all those members who took part in the elections in May and all those who let their names stand. We had a great turnout of 38 Knights and I look forward in an exciting year. At the Convention this past April, it was voted on and passed that our per capita to the Ontario State be increased by $3. Therefore, at July s General Meeting, there will be a vote to increase the dues to $40 from $36. Also an increase to our Honorary Members from to $15 from $10. Please attend this meeting if you have any question. Over the years, there has been small increases that we pay Ontario State to keep up with cost of living avg cents per year The Knights of Columbus set a new all-time record last year for charitable donations and service hours with $175,079,192 in donations and more than 73.5 million hours of service. The numbers were announced at the closing session of the annual Organizational Meeting of State Deputies in New Haven. Our Financial Secretary and I sat down and sent letters to brother Knights who were behind on their dues, one since We have had great response and communication with many but unfortunately we are in the position to start the Suspension process. We will still do our best to work with those members anyway we can. Thanks to all the Knights who prepared the meal at the General Meeting in June; Ray Rice, Hugh Nolan, Rick Janisse, Tony Monteith and George Hric. If it s been a while that you ve been to a meeting, come around 5:00 dress casual; bring about $2 donation for the meal at 5:30, time of fellowship until the meeting starts at 7pm. Bring your Membership Card and $1 for the Good of the Order. If the guys stay focused in reading their reports, the meeting usually lasts an hour and ¼. Just a correction about the Euchre tournament results printed a couple of bulletins ago, Rob Vermeulen took 3rd place overall and not Bob Hollingsworth.. Hard to believe that the Wild Game is already in the planning with Dan McGuire as Chairman. Grand Knight Ted Rocheleau sweetmembakery@aol.com Financial Secretary Brothers: We have a renewal as our newest member, father to Dave Gelinas, Rene Gelinas. Thanks to our Membership Director Dan Dumont and all who helped get a Star Council Award! This has not happened in many moons. Fry hut has had 2 events so far, Soccer Challenge, Roses for Life Programme, Columbian Award Application, were faxed in to Supreme & State. Food for Families was sent in by fax along with Officers Chosen Report. Waterfowl Bar was a very busy night, thanks to chairman John Warmenhoven for taking this on. Fraternally, Bob Phaneuf

3 will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River.but as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord. Let s ponder: Who is the Lord of our household, and whom do we really serve in our lives? Let us pray: Come, Holy Spirit, and fill my heart with Your gifts. Let my love be true and my charity be generous. Help me in all my needs and grant me knowledge to do what is right. Advise me in my doubts, strengthen me when I am tempted, and console me when I am afraid. Graciously hear me, O Holy Spirit, and pour your light into my heart, mind and soul. Help me to live a holy life and grow in goodness and grace. Amen. See you in Church! Yours in Christ, Deacon Dennis Deputy Grand Knight Greetings Brother Knights, Summer is here at last, well it was until today when I had to put on a winter jacket on at work because I was so cold oh well what can I say at least it has not snowed recently. School is finished for the year and Henry is so happy to be on summer vacation, and looking forward to camping and fishing hopefully we will catch a fish this year. Brothers please keep in mind that the British car show is coming up at Heritage village and we will need volunteers in the fry hut. Also remember to donate blood on July 11 at Migration hall, as it is always in need. If you want to help out in any capacity in an upcoming event such as the parish picnic, soccer regional penalty kick challenge, October fest, or our members banquet please do not hesitate to call me at Marshall Heaton Squires Convention chancellor Worthy Brothers; I would like to start off this report with some prayer intentions for our community. At the time of this newsletter, Harrow District High School will have closed its doors for the last time after over 100 years of education. This is a great time of sorrow and transition for the Harrow community so please keep the students and staff in your prayers as they move to new schools all over the county. Congratulations to those worthy students who are recipients of both our Council s Bursary and Excellence Awards. What a wonderful way of helping to secure the future for willing and exceptional students. A very special thanks to Brother Ray Marentette who, as Bursary Chairman, worked tirelessly on these awards. Finally, please take a moment to pray for the following intentions. WGK Ted s Co-worker Bill McGinlay passed away this past Friday. Ann Kuli, wife of Sir Knight Chester Kuli also passed away recently. Also please pray for Brother Ron Schmidt s wife Theresa who is in need of our prayer support. Thank you very much. After studying several similar discernment houses throughout North America, which have assisted greatly in the increase in priestly vocations in many dioceses, we have decided to begin this ministry in London as well. As vocations director, I will be residing at the house and overseeing community life. I am requesting your prayers and also your assistance in proposing this possibility to young men who may benefit from such an experience. I will also require your help to furnish the house (all major appliances are already provided). Please let me know if you are able to assist in this regard. Any questions please don t hesitate to contact me. Here is a description of the discernment house: What is the Dormer house? The Dormer house is a residence for Catholic men (18 yrs. of age and older), who are seeking to discern their state of life vocation in a context of prayer, fraternity and service. The house is operated by the Vocations Office of the Diocese of London. Fr. Patrick Beneteau, Director of Vocations and Seminarians, also resides at the Dormer house. The house is located on Regent St. (near St. George St.), London, Ontario, which is in walking distance from the University of Western Ontario, King s University College and St. Peter s Seminary. The house has a capacity for four residents and includes a chapel. Residents can remain at the Dormer house for a period of one to two years in order to make an informed decision about their vocation, during this time they may be working or studying at a post-secondary institution. A monthly rental fee covers room and board and other formational activities. Interested candidates should contact Fr. Patrick at vocations@dol.ca or for more information. Who is Henry Edward Dormer? Henry Edward Dormer was born in Warwickshire, England, and after studies in Europe and in Ireland, made a retreat at age 19 under Father Rudolph Suffield, a Dominican friar, an event which apparently changed his outlook on life. Stationed with the King s regiment in London, Upper Canada, (now London, Ontario) in 1866 during the era of the Fenian Raids, Dormer is reputed to have led a life of selfless devotion to God, attending to the needs of the poor, sick and elderly of the colonial garrison town. Dormer bestowed money, clothing, food and other necessities to those in need, and gave religious instruction to children and soldiers, if they requested it, all the while wrestling with the question of his own possible vocation to the priesthood. Dormer contracted typhoid fever and died on 2 October 1866, the feast of the Guardian Angels, just as he had decided to enter the Dominican novitiate. As word of Dormer s death spread contemporary newspaper

5 accounts reported that the saint is dead. A plaque in Henry Edward s honour is located at St. Peter s Cathedral Basilica, London, Ontario. He is held as a local example of how growing in holiness assists us in the discernment of our vocation. Sincerely,Fr. Patrick Bénéteau Director of Vocations and Seminarians, Diocese of London Vocations Websites: Cover two people with one policy In this month s article, I want to discuss a type of life insurance product with which you might not be familiar. This product offers a way for you to help your heirs meet estate settlement costs without subtracting from the total value of your estate. After all, you ve worked hard to accumulate wealth or build a business over the years and you want to pass along that value to your family, charity or church in its entirety. To this end, the Knights of Columbus designed a Survivorship Universal Life (SUL) product. SUL is a second to die, or survivorship, life insurance program that covers two people, (usually husband and wife) and the death benefit is paid upon the death of the surviving second person which is normally when an estate would be taxed. This can be an important part of an estate plan. Keep in mind, an SUL policy is one policy that covers two people. This has advantages, including a lower cost than two individual life insurance policies. It is a great option for a married couple with children. It can provide funds for the legal guardians chosen to care for children in the event both parents die, which is especially attractive to parents of a special needs child. If you have a child or children, you need life insurance. If you intend to pass on any property or wealth, you need life insurance. A SUL policy is one option that we can discuss when we meet for an insurance review. 5th Ontario District Golf Tournament will be held at Mooretown, St. Clair Parkway Golf Course. The date is Sunday July 24 at 1:00 PM (Shot Gun start) Tournament contest prizes available and a prize for all participants. 18 holes of Golf plus cart Golf tournament is open to spouses or partners, friends and any 3rd degree members who wish to participate. Dinner will be Steak with all garnishes and desert, coffee or tea. The cost is $65. per participant Confirmation required by July 15th. Please reply to my with confirmation.
