I also want to thank Financial Secretary Danny Fulkerson, Treasurer Dick Patrick and Deputy Grand Knight Ron Rosehart for all of their hours compiling the necessary financial data to put this report together. The breakdown of the numbers is that we reported 6,478 hours of volunteer service performed by Knights in our council, $22,570 was spent on council activities and our total reported Charitable Disbursements was $8,414. We can all be proud of our accomplishments in the areas of volunteer hours and charitable giving. The other major report which is submitted to the Supreme Council Accounts on a semiannual basis and is known as the Council Audit Report. With the help of our Financial Secretary and our Treasurer, this report was submitted to Supreme almost a month early. This report shows our council s cash transactions, assets and liabilities. Any Knight from our council in good standing can request a copy of both or either of these reports by contacting me directly by phone or . Some of our other activities in January and February include the Basketball Free throw contest and our monthly recycling fundraising project which continues to make us good returns thanks to Deputy Grand Knight Ron Rosehart. The free throw contest was held here at Our Lady of Grace on January 25, 2018 and was chaired by Brother Mike Retz. This contest starts (see Grand Knight on page 3)

2 MINUTES OF THE 16 JANUARY 2017 GENERAL MEETING The Council was called to order at 7:55 pm with 19 Knights present. Grand Knight Jim Johnson lead the opening prayer. The roll of Officers was called by Reese Pettinger, with all Officers present or accounted for. Minutes: The minutes of the last general meeting held on 21 November 2017 were approved by the membership. The minutes of the last officer s meeting held on 12 December 2017 were also approved. Membership: There were no new applications. John Rodinec reported that there will be a 4 th degree exemplification on Saturday 17 February at the Town and Country Inn in Mission Valley. 2 nd degree exemplifications are scheduled for 28 January, 01 March, and 03 May. Chaplain s Report: Chaplain Peter McGuine was unable to attend. Treasurer s Report: Treasurer Dick Patrick reported the following for the months of November and December: Beginning balance of $15,746.46; Deposits of $3,748.37; Withdrawals of $5,514.69; Ending balance of $13, The Audit Report was submitted on 16 January for signature, and the Sales Tax Report has been filed. Bills: There was discussion about writing off unpaid dues from previous years, and a motion was made to waive these dues. However, the motion was tabled until the next meeting. Correspondence: Received thank you notes from U.C. San Diego, St. Madeline Sophie s Center, and Home of Guiding Hands for the ID drive donations. Received a thank you note from Knights of Columbus Charities for the donation in support of disaster relief. Received a thank you note from Life Perspectives for the council s donation. Financial Secretary s Report: Danny Fulkerson reported that he is starting to collect new dues. To date he has collected dues from approximately 40 members and he is sending out membership cards to those who have paid. He will follow all the appropriate procedures for those Knights who do not pay their dues. Trustees Report: The trustees will report next month. Chancellor s Report: The Chancellor will report next month. Committee Reports: The next Fish Fry planning meeting will be held 25 January in the Knight s lounge; GK Jim Johnson is chairing. The Knights will be serving soup and bread on Ash Wednesday, 14 Feb, and the first fish fry will be on Fri, 16 Feb. Unfinished Business: The recycling drive collected $110; next collection will be on 10 Feb. -- Dick Patrick volunteered to coordinate the Chapter meeting to be held at OLG on 17 August. -- The Essay Contest first, second, and third place winners have been selected. -- The Free Throw Contest for OLG School will be held on Thursday 25 January. Mike Retz will chair. Subsequently, the District Free Throw Contest will be held on the OLG courts on 10 February. New Business: The blood drive will be on 21 Jan. Wheel Chair Sunday will be held on 21 January; volunteers are needed. -- Kevin Kane is raising funds to send donated canes and walkers to India. -- Ernie Bonanno is heading the Superbowl Squares fundraiser; squares can be purchased for $10 each. -- The Pancake Fundraiser will be held on 22 April; volunteers are needed to form a planning team. Insurance Report: Insurance Field Agent Eric Loechner was unable to attend. District Deuty Report: District Deputy Luigi Zoni was unable to attend. Prayers for Brothers and those in need: Please pray for these worthy people: David Byram, Doug Barkley, Danny Fulkerson, Kelley Missey, and Nancy Missey. Good of the Order: The guest speaker was Lauren Robles, RN, who spoke of her experience with essential oils and their health benefits. -- Knight of the Month (December): David Byram -- Knight of the Month (January): Reese Pettinger -- Family of the Month (January): Vince & Yvette Skalka The Knights Communal Mass will be held on Sunday 28 January at 8am. The meeting was closed with a prayer and final adjournment by Grand Knight Jim Johnson. 2

3 Grand Knight (continued from page 1) with students (boys and girls) who attend Our Lady of Grace School ages 9 through 14. We had a total of 59 students (31 girls & 28 boys) participate in this annual event this year. On February 10, 2018, we again sponsored the District Free Throw Contest here at OLG and all of the winners of this contest are from the Our Lady of Grace School and they will go on to compete in the San Diego Chapter Free Throw Contest, again being held at OLG on February 25, By this date next month we will know if any of our kids made it to the state free throw contest. Be sure and stay tuned for the results. Starting on February 14, 2018 (Ash Wednesday) and going through March 30, 2018 (Good Friday) our council will be very busy putting on our bread and soup offerings along with the Lenten Fish Fries. Up until now, our council has been planning this yearly event and I hope to have glowing reports this time next month on how we are doing. My sense is that we have had a very high interest this year in planning for the soup and bread offerings and fish fries and I am sure we are going to put on a good show for the parishioners again this year. The other two projects, one is in the works and the other has just been completed. The RSVP program where our council sponsors 4 Seminarians from the Saint Francis Seminary at the University of San Diego is in the works and the Super Bowl squares fundraiser has just been completed. I need to recognize Brother Frank Sposato for chairing the RSVP program again this year and Brother Ernie Bonanno for chairing the Super Bowl Squares fundraiser. Take inspiration for your Lenten journey from prayer and the reading of Scripture, from fasting and from giving alms. The fasting that we all do together on Fridays is but a sign of the daily Lenten discipline of individuals and households: fasting for certain periods of time, fasting from certain foods, but also fasting from other things and activities. Likewise, the giving of alms is an effort to share this world equally not only through the distribution of money, but through the sharing of our time and talents. The key to fruitful observance of these practices is to recognize their link to baptismal renewal. We are called not just to abstain from sin during Lent, but to true conversion of our hearts and minds as followers of Christ. We recall those waters in which we were baptized into Christ's death, died to sin and evil, and began new life in Christ. REFLECT "By the sweat of your brow you shall eat bread, Until you return to the ground, from which you were taken; For you are dust, and to dust you shall return." (Gn 3:19) PRAY "Grant, O Lord, that we may begin with holy fasting this campaign of Christian service, so that, as we take up battle against spiritual evils, we may be armed with weapons of selfrestraint. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever." Deacon John 3
