My prayers go out for the entire Bachmeier family on the loss of Jim. I know we will miss him dearly. You will undoubtedly miss him more. He was a gift to us as brother Knights and a personal friend. Please pray for us, brother Jim, as you are now at peace and in the presence of God. 4 th Degree Knight, 2003 Knight of the Year and past Deputy Grand Knight, Chancellor, Director and Chairman of many events and activities and avid sportsman (I am sure I ve missed a few items) James Bachmeier Knights of Columbus 8233 Page 1
2 Chaplin s report: It is my understanding that the passing of Bill C-407 would amend the Criminal Code to permit euthanasia and assisted suicide under certain circumstances. This proposal is a serious threat to human life in our country and it is both saddening and frightening that its adoption is a real possibility. With limited time and space I find myself unequal to the task of addressing this important issue in the confines of this article. Therefore, I merely offer a few thoughts for reflection. In a number of dictionaries I consulted, the definition of the word "euthanasia" included such phrases as "mercy killing" and "painless death." I found it interesting that the word "euphemism" was just a glance away, often on the same page. For in almost every instance, the word "euthanasia" was defined in euphemistic terms. A euphemism is a delicate or pleasing word or phrase which is substituted for a harsh or offensive one. Unfortunately, as pleasing as a euphemism may sound, it often fails to communicate the true meaning of the item in question. Even worse, it subtly induces us to accept something on a very superficial level. We are not served well by referring to euthanasia as "mercy killing" or "painless death", these terms are inadequate and misleading. When a person is put to death, even when they request it, there simply is no such thing as a "painless death". The emotional, psychological and spiritual pain and anguish of every person in the community is called into question and must be taken into account. The conditions or circumstances that could justify the killing of non-human life cannot be applied validly to that of human life. This basic and essential difference is contained in the commandment - Thou Shalt Not Kill. If we really want to be merciful then we need to honour human life, not destroy it. We need to care for suffering people, not kill them. We need to love them in the fullness of their human dignity which tragically at times includes great suffering. Journeying with suffering people often entails a suffering of its own. We are deeply pained to see our loved ones suffer. Do we have the courage to ask ourselves and to carefully consider whose suffering we are really trying to end? Can we be so sure that our motives are entirely pure and most importantly can we recognize that our good intentions never justify the act of killing. An action must be good in and of itself, independent of intention. Fraternally, Fr. Ray Masse Chancellor's Report: Dear Brother Knights, Please pray for those who are sick, Betty Bering, Ray Bosse, Vince Price, Paul Gignac, Lucille Furlotte, and Penny Toupin. As many of you know, Jim Bachmeier has passed away. Our condolences and prayers go out to all his family. Yours in Christ, Ernie Demarse If you know of a brother or widow in need, please contact me at the appropriate phone numbers or via gherkins@bellnet.ca. Knights of Columbus 8233 Page 2
3 Grand Knight's Report: Our District 21 Father s day draw tickets are now available. As a reminder, we will be working together with the other 4 Councils within District 21 and collectively we re working together to raise funds to make repairs at the Oxley Holy Retreat House. This is an extremely important project and deserving of our full support. Brother Wayne Gow will be scheduling times to sell tickets at Zehrs as well as after Mass each weekend until the draw in June. Please give him your full support when he calls you requesting help. He ll also be calling for support to do some yard work and some general maintenance at the Oxley House. What a wonderful way to get out and enjoy some fresh spring air, get some exercise, strengthen some fraternal bonds with some other brother knights within this district and also help a special place. On Sunday April 23 rd, we had two new gentlemen join our fraternity and completed their 1 st degrees. When you have an opportunity, please offer your own personal welcome to Eric Wall and Wilfred Kobelsky. We re also fortunate to welcome a brother Knight who transferred into our Council this past month. A hardy welcome is also deserving for brother Donald Hancock. This months meeting is important for as many brother Knights to attend as possible. This is elections month for your next Executive. Please come out to show and offer your support for them. There are two second degree s planned in Windsor, one on May 28 th and the other on June 26 th. We have 6 brother Knights requiring their 2 nd degree. Sponsors please arrange to attend one of these dates with the brother knight who needs to progress to their next step. We ll go over details at the next general meeting. At last month s general meeting a committee recommended that we take the offer to exclusively run the french fry booth at Heritage Village. PGK Larry Everaert will be arranging a time in May to begin some training for our newest adventure. Please venture out and learn the abc s of the fryers. I m sure sampling of the tasty french fry s is part of the training. Let s give our full support behind this new endeavour and join together for some fun while we offer our service at some interesting events at Heritage Village. The dates for 2006 are (and please post them on your fridge): Heritage Village June 11 th, June 17 th & 18 th, Sept 3 rd, Sept 23 rd & 24 th, Oct 14 th & Oct 15 th This past weekend, as most of you know who received a phone call. Our council was unfortunate to say farewell to brother and Sir Knight Jim Bachmeier. Jim has been an active member of St John de Brebeuf Council for 7 years. In this short amount of time, Jim has been a staple in our Council and has surely been a positive role model and influence. Jim was full of life, his personality oozed enthusiasm and the spirit of goodwill. Jim was passionate about the Knights of Columbus and the relationships that developed because of the fraternal bonds we all share. Jim knew to become a Knight was a privilege and something to be treasured. Quoting Albert Pines, What we do for ourselves, dies with us. What we do for others and the world, remains and is immortal. Jim s love and legacy remains like a tapestry, woven together by our memories and in the stories we share with each other about this compassionate man we called James Bachmeier. We ll certainly miss this generous and big hearted man. Fraternally yours, David Gelinas, GK Vivat Jesus Knights of Columbus 8233 Page 3
4 Deputy Grand Knight's Report: I have just heard about the passing of Brother Jim Bachmeier. His suffering has ended and he is now with his wife Beryl. He was a good friend of mine and a very Important Member of our Council. Like he always said "No ONE Person Makes a Council, We ALL Make A Council and It's That Involvement that Makes Our Council Strong". I'm going to miss you Jimmy.. DGK Report I'm hoping everyone had a Wonderful and Grateful Easter. My Wife and I were able to spend the Easter weekend with our daughters in Peterbourgh. I'd like to ask all of you to keep our Brother Knights and their Families who are sick or have died in your daily thoughts and prayers, especially Jim Bachmeier, Vincent Price, and Doris Toupin and Betty Bering. Welcome back to God's Country, our Brother Knights who have been away on vacation or just out of town. Guys like Morris Gaffin, Fred Sleiman and George Hric. Damn those tans look good. We are still waiting on Ivan Holmes.. The K of C Councils in Amherstburg, Harrow and the 2 in Leamington and our Council in Kingsville are raising funds for necessary repairs to the roofs of Oxley Retreat House. The Councils are putting on a Fathers Day Raffle of BBQ's and Meat. Ok, Lots of Meat. ( I LIKE MEAT) The Oxley Retreat House has affected each and every one of us in one way or another. I remember going there when I was in grade school as have My Children. When I take summer time drives along the lake, I often passed by the Oxley Retreat House and thought about yesteryears of old. Please support this raffle and have your family buy a couple of tickets for you for Fathers Day. It'll make a great gift and the money will go towards a Great Cause. Tickets will be available after all Masses.. Nominations were held last meeting in April for the executive positions. If you are wanting to be more involved in our council, this is a great time. Show up at our next meeting on May 9th at 8pm and let someone know your interest. Come on out anyways and support Our Brothers who have stepped up and let their names Stand and be apart of the voting process.. A couple of other things. April 11 Edition of the Kingsville Reporter had a Very Young looking photo of Brother Knight Nando Quadrini..Happy 40th Nando. And a Special Salute to a Past Charter Member of our Council who Celebrated 50 Years of Marriage.. Dick and Yvonne Amlin. K of C Photo Directory and Info.. We have a group of guys who will be calling brother knights to make arrangements to get your photo taken and to get some info from you. The info you offer is vital in aiding Future Chairmen to find help for upcoming Events. Also some of the info will help John W. update his records. The day will be Monday May 15 at the K of C Hall from Hoping this will cover all of you who are on shift work. Also we will be available after the Saturday night mass and 10am Sunday Mass on May 6-7 and If this doesn't work, than we go to Plan C... This is also a great time to catch up on your dues, if they are still owing. 4th Degree Dinner.. Our council held the 4th Degree Dinner/Meeting for this month on March 23rd. I would like to thank the guys who took time to help...ray Marentette, Dan Orawski, Tom Gelinas, Dan Simone, Tony Wyard for help me with this event. And Mario Mederios for taking care of the Bar. Youth Thinkfast.. The Knights have been supporting the Youth of our Parish in their 24 Hour Fast since the program started in This Youth Event was held on April 2nd. After their fast, The youths attend mass at 10am and are treated to breakfast sponsored by the knights. I would like to thank Ken Bosse, Lou Costa, Steve Benson and Dave Gelinas for helping me with this event. Knights of Columbus 8233 Page 4
5 Euchre Dinner On April 6th, it was our turn to hold the Euchre Dinner and Card night. I would like to thank the guys who helped out to make this night a success. And honest, this was the best dinner that we've had so far. Thanks to John Popelas, Danny Nelson, Frank Vlasschaert, Hugh Nolan, Rick Lucier who helped this evening. And George Hric who took care of the bar Nice Tan George!!! Breakfast.. The last breakfast of the season was held on Sunday April 9th. It was well attended and enjoyed by all. There was a total of 28 knights who were involved with a total of 81.5 hrs. I'd like to thank Ed Cuschiere and Perry Radu for co-chairing this breakfast. We were able to raise $ for St. Vincent de Paul plus a lot of food donations to fill up their shelves. If I've missed anyone in the above functions, I'm Sorry.. Ted Rocheleau, DGK Ted sweetmembakery@aol.com Wild Game Chairman s Report On behalf of myself and Co-Chair, Tom Dunlevie I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved in making the 2006 St. Patrick s wild game dinner a success. A special thanks goes to all the Knights, their wives and families who worked so hard to make this event so successful. To name names would take too long, so we would like to say a big Thank You to all. Special thanks to all chairs and their helpers for their assistance to make sure everything ran smoothly. Ken Bachmeier and Tom Dunlevie. KINGSVILLE COLUMBUS CENTRE Following the June 13 th General Meeting, the Board of Directors for the Kingsville Columbus Centre will present their annual financial report to the membership. There will also be an election of three members to serve on the Board for a term of 2 years. ONTARIO STATE LOTTERY (Previously CAR RAFFLE) Did you get your lottery tickets yet? This years allotment of Lottery tickets is all sold out. The second weekend of ticket sales at Zehrs ended at about 1:15 p.m. Thanks to a long list of ticket sellers we sold close to 250 books over the two weekends, one in February and the other from April 27 to April 29. The brightly coloured Pontiac Pursuit provided by Essex Auto Sales attracted a lot of attention to our ticket sellers. People were stopping for tickets even as the sold out sign went up. Those individuals having tickets should return them by the next meeting on May 9. Thank you to all ticket sellers, Janet Barraco at the Church office for helping sell tickets. Hopefully, we will be rewarded by a winner locally. FRENCH FRY HUT Following the recommendation of a committee formed a month ago to investigate the feasibility of buying the french fryers and related equipment at the Heritage Village, Council 8233 now owns the said equipment. In addition, the will enter into an agreement with the Village to operate the French Fry Shack. However, the equipment is ours and thus can be moved out of the Village for other functions. Larry Everaert, who has worked with the equipment since its instillation, will be training members in its proper use. We will be setting up a committee to run the Shack. We also need suggestions where we might use the fryers to help realize a profit. We are encouraged to put our name on the French Fry Shack, indicating to the public that we knights are now providing this service. If you are interested in working on this new venture contact a member of the executive. Knights of Columbus 8233 Page 5

Larry Gollnitz, Chairman, Bursary Committee From Our Agent My Brothers, Ahh... May is upon us... the time of the year when most of us have given up on our New Year's resolutions. This is the perfect time to make some real and lasting changes in your life - especially in regards to your financial well being. Your life changes, circumstances change, and so should financial plans for the future. After all, plans made some time ago were based on the facts of our lives at that point. What may have been appropriate life insurance planning, retirement planning, or estate planning some time ago may no longer be appropriate. Adjustments may be needed or required! Bring in an expert to help in this reassessment process. As your Knights of Columbus agent, I have helped many families just like yours plan for the future, and with the use of K of C cutting edge software, I will be very happy to offer you a free professional analysis of your current situation. I urge all of you to take full advantage of your K of C membership. Before 2006 gets away from you, resolve to take a good look at your financial future with the help of a Brother Knight. Yours Fraternally, Jeremie Bornais Ba., FIC jeremie.bornais@kofc.org kofcinsjb@yahoo.ca Knights of Columbus 8233 Page 6
