2 Grand Knight's Report: Allow me to reflect on July s activities. I was extremely pleased and excited about the large number of brother Knights that attended the general meeting which also held a 1 st degree that evening. We witnessed 10 gentlemen who became brother Knights in the 1 st degree; six gentlemen who are now part of our Council s fraternal family. I wish to extend a welcome to brothers Michael Binder, Dr. Rick Mastronardi, Dan Orawski, Michael Orawski, Randy Tull and Jason Wascher. I look forward to knowing these gentlemen more through any future K of C functions and the opportunity to meet their families. Our July Pork roast dinner was again a fun event and delicious meal for everyone who attended. I wish to thank both chairmen, John Warmenhoven and our most recent PGK Larry Everaert, for their diligent hard work and their passionate concern to see this dinner continue to be a vibrant annual social community event offered by the Knights of Columbus. I m confident that John will have information to share with us regarding this dinner in the near future once details are completed. Our Council is 1 of 7 charity organizations that work together for the annual Kingsville Carnival. I wish to extend my gratitude to all the Knights that were able to offer help for this community event. I was very delighted that so many could donate some time to assist with the main food booth, some even helped with the bartending. This year we had 62 volunteers from our fraternal family offer their time. This is an extraordinary large number and I m very happy to see such strong fraternal bonds and commitment within our Council. I want to extend my gratitude to Larry Everaert and John Warmenhoven for their hard work during the carnival event, and for their commitment during the past year for attending all the meetings in preparation of this large event. I m sure that Larry will report to us once the details of the carnival event are finalized with that committee. Kingsville Community Carnival Committee Volunteer Appreciation BBQ The KCCC has invited all the volunteers to an appreciation BBQ at Cottam Rotary Park at 6:30pm on August 11 th. Please bring your lawn chair and invite your spouse. Please respond to me by Friday Aug. 5 th if you can attend so I respond to the committee the number of K of C volunteers attending. I wish to make a correction in regards to the name of a bursary recipient; I incorrectly spelled the name of a student. Please note that Adam Edwards received one of our Council s bursary awards of $750, congratulations and great success to you Adam. I would like to extend my appreciation to Anthony Rebkowec for accepting my invitation to be our Lecturer and our Right to Life (Pro Life) chairman. I know that Anthony will put forward his best efforts in regards to both responsibilities. I want to express my sincere appreciation to some new chairmen that have accepted either mine or DGK Ted s invitation to help with some of Council 8233 s annual activities. Our new chairmen for this years Oktoberfest (Oct. 29 th,2005) are Moe Gaffan and Fred Sleiman. Our new chairmen for this years St. Patrick s day Wild Game dinner (March 4 th, 2006) are Ken Bachmeier and Tom Dunlevie. I have been assured that the previous co-chairmen will assist these gentlemen. I m also confident that these new co-chairmen are capable of this task and deserving of all our full support; I wish them all great success. Ontario State Council is hosting their 14 th annual Golf tournament on Sept. 24 th, 2005 at Innisbrook Golf Club in Barrie. Only 38 teams (all must be members in good standing) and the price is $80 before Aug. 24 th and $85 each after. It includes the green fees, cart dinner and prizes and it will be a shotgun start. Contact brother Ray Couturier for registration and information (705) Please note that one neighbouring Council is planning a District 21 fraternal golf tourney. It should also be held in September within the county with more details to follow. Please reflect during this month of August on the birthday (12 th ) and the day of his passing to eternal life (14 th ) of our fraternal founder, Father J McGivney. His vision of a Catholic fraternal family is strong and vibrant today with the resent milestone of the 1.7 millionth brother Knight joining. His principles of Charity, Unity and Fraternity are vigorously practiced today and Fr. McGivney is an example that one person, esp. one priest can make a positive difference. 3 This is a reminder that Council 8233 s Installation of Officers will be on Sunday August 28 th. Please bring your family to 10 am mass and the Installation will begin afterward with a lunch to follow at our K of C hall. I ll be calling the executive officers soon to find out how many are planning to stay for lunch and fellowship afterward; so proper amounts of food can be prepared. I wish to thank Tony Wyard for the work he did on our K of C cash boxes. They look great and are better functionally. Good job Tony. Oh, if Dan is reading this while vacationing happy boating and good luck with the fishing. Reminder: Council 8233 general meetings will start promptly at 8pm Finally, I want DGK Ted to know that I ll be thinking of you fella s during this month s general meeting. Months before this year s election of officers my family planned a vacation to a northern location with a cottage on a lake. I ll make it a point on that Tuesday evening that I have a fishing rod in one hand and a coke in the other while I m thinking of all of you. Maybe you could say a prayer that I, or my girls, will catch a big bass or lots of perch sometime during that evening. Fraternally, David Gelinas, GK Vivat Jesus Deputy Grand Knight's Report: Our annual Canvassing for the Arthritis Society will beginning soon...this is a great way to meet your neighbours and people around you. If you have an hour or two a night for a couple of nights, that would be excellent.. All you need to say is "I'm... from the Knights of Columbus and we are canvassing on behalf of the Arthritis Society and we'd love to have your support this year. It s that easy.. If you think you can handle this and get some free exercise at the same time, give Andy Repko a call at or myself at This is just another way of letting our community know what the Knights of Columbus are about... Ted Rocheleau DGK Ps. If you think you are not going to get Arthritis, remember that Arthritis can effect anyone at any Age. I would also like to introduce the new directors for the fiscal year... Church Director...Fred Sleiman Community Director...Curtis Scott Council Director...Wayne Gow Family Director...Rene Everaert Youth Director..Mario Medeiros Membership-Larry Everaert This is a great opportunity for these men to find out what goes on behind the scenes and to possibly develop new events for our council. I trust Your support will be behind them if your ever called upon... Thank you again guys for taking this on... Program Director...Ted Rocheleau DGK MEET YOUR BROTHER: ~ By John Warmenhoven John had to pass this month, but I was recently talking with Brother Dick who gave some positives regarding Brother Vince at the Royal Oak. Vince is doing better but I am sure he d appreciate a visit. I believe he is the original Grand Knight to our council. ED Youth News I would like to remind anyone who has not already heard about our Knights of Columbus LAN Party!!! Will be held August 20th, It's open to all ages young and old!! Up coming Youth events: Lan Party Saturday, August 20th, 2005 Altar Servers Party - No date confirmed 24hr Fast/Breakfast - No date confirmed Children s Christmas Party - No date confirmed Free Throw Competition No date confirmed Be an Active Knight, volunteer your services with the youth and help them grow!! Yours Fraternally, Mario M. Youth Director Have you given blood lately? Do you know how much blood you d need for these Cancer treatment- up to 8 units a week Heart bypass surgery- 1 to 6 units Car accident/gunshot wound- up to 50 units Abdominal surgery- 2 to 4 units Brain aneurysm- 4 units Do you know of anyone who has been treated for any of the above afflictions? That's another reason to give. "Blood. It s in You to Give." PIG ROAST 2005 Although not all bills are in, I expect a profit of about $1000 from this year s return of the Pig Roast. 129 tickets were taken in at the food line. The meat and corn was again prepared by Andy Repko and Stan Balakowski and crew. The rest of the food - cole slaw, veggies, fruit desert were excellently prepared and presented as well as served by Neil Sunderland and Barb Gartner and crew. The bar was in the capable hands of Ivan Holmes and Ted Pageau, who along with helpers kept the beer flowing. Roger Vercruysse again did his usual great job, first raising the pig and then looking after our profitable draw. Jim Bachmeier looked after the booking of our DJ. I want to thank all those mentioned and all others that helped make our pig roast a success. Thanks also to REMARK FARMS for the very generous donation of produce once again. Everything that you provided was up to your usual high standards in quality and taste. Tentative plans for next year have already begun. At present we will have the Pig Roast on June 24, It will be held in cooperation with the St. John de Brebeuf School golf tournament. It is hoped that ideas such as door prizes and raffles will also be included in next year s event. Hopefully, a chairman, or chairmen can be found. J.F.Warmenhoven Update on Ted's Friend Chris.. Remember earlier in the year, My friend Chris L., was going in for a Bone Marrow Transplant in May.. Well, the donor went on vacation in a restricted area and the transplant was called off. Nice... So here we have a young father, fighting cancer and finally finds a match and this happens. To say the least, the family was devastated. As of now, Chris is scheduled for Sept 21st or 28th. Please keep him and his family in your prayers. Ted Knights of Columbus 8233 Page 4
5 MEMBERSHIP Council 8233 continues to draw new members even as some older members become lax in paying their dues. At our last general meeting six new members obtained their first degree. In addition, four form 100's have been submitted to the council for reading at the next meeting. When these candidates obtain their first degree in September our council will reach the 150 mark. Unfortunately, we have the most unpaid members ever entering this new fraternal year. Five members still owe for 2004, 24 members owe for 2005 and 3 of six new members have not yet paid their dues. The amount owing is a staggering $1063. Your council has already paid $ to Supreme and State in per capita and other fees. Membership dues notices were first mailed in January with the January Newsletter. Supreme allows for the suspension process to begin after three months, the end of March. Although Supreme discourages this process, members who have not paid their dues are not in good standing. Should they die in an accident, Supreme might not pay on the insurance due for membership in the order. Spouses and other beneficiaries should ensure that membership dues are paid. Current cards are green. Membership cards for 2006 will be available by the end of this month. Dues will continue to be $36. Those seeking to pay early should contact me. Please contact me if you wish to receive future newsletters by (if you do not already). A saving of $6 per knight is realized if is used versus snail mail. Also, please contact me if you do not receive the Columbia magazine from Supreme or if you change your address. F.S. John F. Warmenhoven Hello Rick Janisse, Ray Marentette, David McLean, Henry Meloche, and Les Menard Knights of Columbus Breakfasts I will be looking for 1-2 chairmen to take over this event for me. I have all the details recorded for the last 3-4 years for everything that has been done. Food ordered, list of guys, what needs to be done and when. You Will Not be walking into this blind as everything is written out, step by step. I will probably be there most times to help anyways but my new position will be keeping me busier than I expected. You Don't Need to know how to cook, so don't worry there. And getting help is easy, as guys are usually disappointed when there are not asked. And, lastly, there is only one mass now so we can start an hour later and we'll get out an hour earlier. We have a breakfast scheduled for Nov 6th. You can make the breakfasts the 1st of each month or what ever you have time for. Fall and winter are the Best times to have them but call me with any questions. Please seriously consider this chairman's position. You'll love it. DGK Ted R. Comments from Dirk: The foreigners went through their steps toward full knighthood in the future. We had a lot of members show up for the occasion. They were treated to a very nice lunch and drink. Ted R served a delicious raccoon dish and it tasted wild, melted in your mouth and was accepted as venison. Bob H was very pleased to hear the freezer has some more room. It was a very successful first degree. KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS INSURANCE: JEREMIE BORNAIS, AGENT FIC AT: Knights of Columbus 8233 Page 5
