Luke s gospels are commonly noted for his presentation of Jesus focusing on marginalized people of a community. Luke notes Jesus compassion for the outcasts of society. His Gospels are sometimes represented as the gospel of the poor and of social justice. While the apparent focus is on the disadvantaged, poor and otherwise social outcast, the gospels also portray an abundance of food. Fact: Luke s gospels contain nineteen references to stories of banquets and feasts of which thirteen are exclusive to his gospel. It may be argued that the number of references indicates the significance of gathering together and sharing a meal. Jesus participation in the meals often included an opportunity for him to reveal who he was and to reinforce his message. Luke also illustrates how Jesus communicates about his kingdom with his people. The other take away from Luke s gospels is the importance of community. Community is the key aspect of the Kingdom of God above and on earth through His Church. The Knights embrace the concept of community through our core principles of Fraternity and Unity as well as Jesus message of helping those in need or less fortunate than ourselves. Through Fraternity we Knights join together and assist the disadvantage or those in distress. In Unity there is strength. What we accomplish as a group far exceeds our individual contributions. However, it always begins with an individual making that first effort. As such, I am calling all Brothers, family and friends of Summit Council 783 to join together fraternally as we embark on multiple fundraising activities commencing in October. First up is Peanut Brittle. Last year we sold 147 lbs. of Peanut Brittle. At $12 per box this generated a net income of about $716. That is approximately $5 per pound of PB. This year we are upping the ante and producing an additional 70 lbs. bringing us to a grand total of nearly 220 pounds of product to be produced, packaged and sold. Hopefully this will translate into an additional $350 profit.

2 GRAND KNIGHT S LETTER (CONTINUED) Production begins Saturday October 8 at the OLP parish hall at 9:30 am until 4:30. The next phases of production are scheduled for: THURSDAY Oct 20, Paca Club 8AM to approx. 1PM. THURSDAY Oct 20, Paca Club 7PM to approx. 10PM THURSDAY Nov 3, Paca Club 8AM to approx. 1PM To facilitate distribution, we have dates scheduled at each parish during Advent to sell PB along side of our Keep Christ in Christmas magnets and yard displays. (Dates are listed below.) We will need volunteers to man the tables outside of church after each Mass. However, we will first need assistance baking, packaging and distributing/selling finished goods. Thanks in advance to those of you who have already volunteered to assist.! Any questions should be directed to the PB Committee Chair, PGK Paul Vikan. Remember the sales of all PB go towards the four Union Catholic Scholarships of $500 per student. Second, Taste of Italy. The Taste is our biggest fund raiser generating over $2,000 of profit last year. This years event is co-chaired by PGK Fred Cowburn and PGK Dave Janazzo. Most of the sub-committee chairs have been assigned, however, they will be looking for helpers and volunteers to fully man specific stations and tasks, e.g., food prep (meat balls, pasta, salad, and more). Callers will be soliciting volunteers to make sauce or a dessert or both. Any questions should be directed to the co-chairs. Third, Keep Christ in Christmas. Historically, the Council has sold only magnets, however Committee Chair PGK Dave Janazzo has managed to expand our line-up to include exterior nativity sets. Last year we generated over $1800 of profit through the sale of magnets only!. Many thanks to Brother Frank Ponzio for providing the seed money for this program! Hopefully this year we can have another record year and break $2000!!!! The exterior nativity sets have a higher price point (around $100) and must be pre-ordered by November 30 to assure delivery in time for the Christmas season. Additionally, Brother Janazzo has arranged for the Knights to sell Keep Christ in Christmas after Mass during Advent. As mentioned above, we will be selling Peanut Brittle concurrently. The current schedule is St. Teresa November 26-27; OLP December 3-4, and Little Flower December Fourth, Chapter Charity Ball. This event seems early this year falling on Friday November 18. This is an important part of the Chapter programs as it funds the Chapter Scholarship. See From the Financial Secretary s Desk. As you peruse your schedules and realign personal commitments to assist us with these endeavors, be mindful that our continued success depends on our ability to gain new members. Each one of these events provides us with the unique opportunity to market the Knights and to spread the word. Take advantage of these opportunities to share the experience with your fraternal brothers and to also engage fellow parishioners, town folk, friends and neighbors to support or join our Order. 3 Calendar of Events Please review the calendar to determine where you can join in Unity and Fraternity are the Second and Third Degrees We are also in need of cooks for the Business Meetings on the first Thursday of each month to provide dinner for 15 to 20 Brothers. 7 FROM YOUR INSURANCE AGENT Dear Brother Knight: Today, I want to address the growth of the Order. Membership growth is the fuel that keeps this great fraternal engine running. All of our charitable works at the council, state, national and international level are thanks to our hard-working members. And more members equals more charity. We know that the membership blitz is a tried and true way for councils to get more men to join. We see these pushes often in March, in celebration of Founder s Day, and again in October. These drives are successful because brother Knights have increased visibility speaking or presenting during and after Masses and at special events. We must remember that we have a duty to ask each and every Catholic gentleman to join our ranks for the good of the Church, the community and the Order. During the rest of the year, we often forget to ask men to join and to bring their families into the Knights of Columbus family. You probably know an eligible Catholic man you could ask today. What if the only reason he hasn t joined is because no one has asked him yet? When telling a prospect about the strengths of the Order, don t forget our greatest fraternal benefit: our insurance program. This is often a selling point to a potential member who is on the fence. Many members become Knights simply to be able to buy coverage to protect their family. Soon after, they realize the good our charitable works do for their community, and they are proud to be members. 8 O God of Creation, you have blessed us with the changing of the seasons. As we embrace these autumn months, May the earlier setting of the sun remind us to take time to rest. May the crunch of the leaves beneath our feet remind us of the brevity of this earthly life. May the steam of our breath in the cool air remind us that it is you who give us your breath of life. May the scurrying of the squirrels and the migration of the birds remind us that you call us to follow your will. We praise you for your goodness forever and ever. Amen.
