This year we increased our contribution to $1,000. We encourage all our members to attend the dinner on Friday May 16, 2014 at the Rusty Rail restaurant, Route 5 in Canastota, astota, NY. A 5 PM mass will be celebrated by Bishop Robert J. Cunningham at St Pat s Church, 1341 Murray Drive, in Chittenango, NY. Cash bar 6:30 PM with 7:30 PM. 2 Father Seibt Ordination Gift Chaplain Fr James Schultz presented Fr Seibt a travel Mass Kit as an ordination gift from our Council at our Officers meeting on March 18th. As members of our Council, we financially supported Fr Seibt for several years as he pursued his vocation in the seminary. Fr Seibt s first parish assignment was in February to St Rose of Lima in North Syracuse. Friends For Life Luncheon The Friends For Life luncheon is Saturday 4/12/14 at Barbagallo s Restaurant 6344 E. Molloy Rd, E. Syracuse, NY. Coffee at 11:30 am, lunch at 12:00 pm. Admission is $20 per person ($15 for students). Checks (payable to Friends for Life, Inc.) can be mailed to Betty Morrell, 106 Wynthrop Rd, Solvay, NY Further information, call Betty Morrell at or Joan Brown at Food for Needy Families Our annual 40 Cans for Lent program and the new Easter Food Baskets programs address Christ s preaching that we feed the hungry. The 40 cans for Lent contributions can be made from Ash Wednesday thru Easter Sunday. All such items should be marked as designated for Anna s Pantry and delivered to our Council room to the area set aside for these canned goods. The Easter food baskets are a duplicate process of our Thanksgiving food baskets for needy families. Brother knight Leon Bill has volunteered to chair this new project. Anna s Pantry will identify the families for us. Each contributor is asked to bring what they commit to starting on no earlier than April 2nd. Distribution is expected to be made on Good Friday. As with the Thanksgiving program, updated listing commitments have been circulated indicating what people have committed to donate. 2

3 Council Officers All officers are scheduled to be elected each year at the May council meeting. Except for trustees, everyone is elected for a one year term effective July 1st thru June 30th. Elected council officers include: Grand Knight, Deputy Grand Knight, Chancellor, Warden, Recorder, Treasurer, Advocate, Inside Guard, Outside Guard and a Trustee. Remember that to be eligible you must be a 3rd Degree member in good standing in the Council. All officers are expected to attend Council and officer meetings on a regular basis. The nominations committee, composed of DGK Mark Monica, as chair, and members Richard Sokolowski and Tim Parkhurst will recommend candidates to the general membership at the April 23rd meeting. Bishop Cunningham Council is blessed with many capable men who can provide leadership in all the various roles. If you would like to be considered as a candidate for any office, please contact a member of this committee or Grand Knight Ed Szczesniak as soon as possible. Awards The 2014 Knight of the year, Mark Monica, and Family of the year, Fred and Jackie Fietkiewicz, have been selected and will be recognized at our Council s Charter Dinner on June 18, ipad Mini Raffle Fundraiser As part of our effort to raise funds to support our youth programs, we are selling i Pad Mini raffle tickets from now thru the raffle drawing on June 15th. While we will be selling tickets in the lobby to Sacred Heart Church parishioners after masses on several weekends and at the Craft Fair and the Cicero Festival, we are asking brother knights to offer the opportunity to buy tickets to their family, friends, and co-workers (where permitted). Raffle chairman brother George Dapson can be contacted at or gdapson@verizon.net for a supply of tickets. We will be selling these raffle tickets after all masses at Sacred Heart Church on Saturday and Sunday April 12th and 13th, May 3rd and 4th, and June 7h and 8th. Final selling will take place on the weekend of the Cicero Festival and after all masses on June 14th and 15th. The winner will be drawn after the 11 AM mass. All brother knights attending these masses are asked to help Brother Dapson with this project wearing their Knights shirts, jackets or name tags. Finally, we take this opportunity to thank brother knight Kevin Fear for his generosity in again donating this year s ipad. 3

4 Degree Exemplifications A 1st Degree exemplification is scheduled for Tuesday April 15, 2014 at 6:00 PM at Sacred Heart Church-lower level. Utica Assembly 733 is hosting a 4 th degree exemplification on April 5, 2014 at William E. Burke Council #189 at 201 Main Street, New York Mills, New York. Membership Recently we added 2 new members to our Council. Bob Bustin transferred in from a Council in Towanda, Pennsylvania. He has been a Knight of Columbus for over 50 years. Bob has spent a lot of time in Buffalo and Syracuse NY with business interests in Pennsylvania. He said he owes a lot to the Knights of Columbus and continues to want to be of service wherever he can. He already volunteered selling coupon books at Destiny last December. Alexander Turkett is a reactivation also with over 50 years since he first joined the Knights of Columbus. Alexander is a tax accountant in our Cicero community and a Sacred Heart Church parishioner. As Knights of Columbus, we need to provide other Catholic gentlemen the opportunity to participate in our fraternal organization. A member recruitment effort is scheduled at Sacred Heart church after all masses on April 5th and 6th. Every Knight should have an annual personal goal to bring in one new member to our Council. Your father, son and friends are your prime candidates. Remember, you can talk to a prospective knight yourself or give his name and contact information to our membership director, brother Steve Leyden ( ). 4

5 Sustaining Club Grand Knight Ed Szczesniak asks you to remember what Fred Fietkiewicz said in an last month to all brother knights: Almsgiving is part of our Lenten journey, The significant support of vocations and veterans should be enough to stir our compassion, and Now is the time to consider your sacrificial, charitable Lenten commitment to the Sustaining Club. Encourage your family and friends to save the date and be a donor. It is easy and only takes about 45 minutes to donate. So, save your blood for September 18th and Save a Life. 5

6 Update Your Beneficiaries Sometimes it is easy to overlook the simplest of things. Take the beneficiaries on your life insurance policies. If your policy was applied for and issued several years ago, it could very well be that the person you originally selected as the beneficiary is no longer the person you would want to receive the policy proceeds. If you bought the policy when you were single, for example, you may have named your parents as beneficiaries. If you have since married, your policies should be updated to reflect your spouse as beneficiary. Maybe you ve had children who are not named on the policies. Most people list a primary beneficiary, who is specifically designated as the first in priority to receive policy proceeds. We also encourage the naming of a contingent beneficiary, an alternate person designated to receive policy proceeds, usually in the event that the original beneficiary pre-deceases the insured. I routinely call all of my policyholders for annual review appointments, usually near the anniversary date of your policy the date it was originally issued. One of the matters that I ll discuss during this review is the status of your beneficiary designations. If they need updating, and they often do, I can complete the paperwork during that appointment.
