A few words from the pages of the catalog wll gve some dea of the magn: tude of the work and. the excellency of the plan: THE SCHOOL GROUNDS The school grounds comprse nearly one thousard acres. Approxmately four hundred acres of. ths are tllable land wth the remanng sx hundred acres of hll land used as range for the dary and bef cattle horses and sheep of the Agrcultural Department of the school. Ths s a slghtly un... dulatngplot tastefully planted to ornamental trees and shrubs and carefully landscaped to provde for groupng of the shops laboratores and classrooms of the several departments. Broad walks and drves traverse the entre campus renderng each objectve pont easly accessble. THE PRESDENT'S RESDENCE n close proxmty to the dormtory s the pres.. dent's resdence. Whle there s a faculty member lvng n the dornltory who looks after the. welfare and conduct of the boys yet t has proved of dstmct advantage to have the home of the presdent easly accessbl -to the boys. Both Presdent and Mrs. Crandall take' an. ntense personal nterest n the boys' welfare and many of them feel as much at home at the presdent's home as they do n ther own dormtory room. Ad- ; jonng the presdent's home s the campus esdence of the head of the Department of Lght Heat and Water and also the resdence of the head of the Department of Agrculture. Brother' Crandall wll' be remembered by many old Alfred students of twenty-fve or thrty years ago. s home was near ;the Seyenth ' Day Bapbst. church of ndependence N.Y..andMrs. 'CranaU was Mss beaut ful anq suggestve lttle poem on the back page of the cover last week? f you dd not please read t now and thnk of the beautful suggeston about buldng for the ones who must pass ths way' after we are gone.. do not }Vonder that when Treasurer Hubbard and hs good wfe heard the stanzas read at a club meetng by a neghborng mnster ther hearts were strred; for ther mnds were full of thoughts regardng the prop9sed new buldng. THere s more than one knd of chasm to be crossed by those comng' after us who have reached lfe's evenng tme. The old Jl1an n the poem wshed to brdge the. stream as best he could for the feet that must pass hs way after he had gone. What he bult was a tangble materal evdence of hs concern for the younger ones who must travel th'e road over whch he had safely passed but whose feet mght -stumble where hs had not. Hs own pathway had been beset by many ptfalls and he feared for hs loved one who must come that way. So he decded to do all n hs power to' guard aganst such a calamty. He would leave a tangble materal evdence of hs fath as hs day was closng as a help to loved ones comng after. Some of hs fellow' plgrms thought t was not worth whle to waste ther tme n buldng to. help others snce ther owp j ourney was about done and they would never pass that way agan. The old man's answer was so good and suggestve am gong to repeat t her: The bulder lfted hs old gray head 'Good frend n the way ''ve come' he sad 'Thete followeth after me today A youth whose feet. must pass ths way. Ths stream that has' been as naught to me To. the far-hared youth. mght a ptfall l?e. He too must' cross n twlght dm.. Good frend a buldng the brdge for hm'. Frends of our own- good cause some o usa.re: Well throughwth lfe's day 'and our -. journey wll soon end. We have nothng to fear as to the outcome-we shall be. true to the end; lfe's trals for' us are nearly over-but we do fear for those who are comng after. Ther pathway s beset by greater hndrances than ours has been and we have a vson n -materal form-a denomnatonal buldng-that shall speak to thos.e comng after us n unmstakable language.pf our loyalty to the fath of our fathers and of our own fath n our denomnaton's future. There ought to be nspraton and help n the fact that ther fathers were budng for them and n the evdence that ther fathers chershed the memory of those who have gone before. The FebruaryCaleDdar One month of the new calendar s gone by and today we turn the leaf for the February record. Many readers enjo)led the January leaf on account of ts denomnatonal data and hstorc references.. The new leaf for February s qute as full of nterestng data. t shows what boards meet and when; t tells of the term begnnngs n the colleges. and contans a pcture of Elder Wllam Blss once pastor of the old Newport Church and son-n-law of Governor Ward. On the reverse sde -of ths leaf we have data regardng the Eastern and Central assocatons tme and place of meetng and names of ther offcers and the delegates for know of no easer or better way to keep n touch wth denomnatonal movements than to have one of these calendars for ready reference. Ffteen cents wll secure ths data for the year. Alfred PreparD. to n the Alfred Sun s EDtertaD Conference a report to the annual church meetng extensve commttee to have charge f the entertanment of delegates to the General Conference whch meets wth that church n August. Text: ufre shall be kept burnng upon the altlw contnually)' t 'shall not go out.n -Levtcus 6: 13. vsted last year for the second tme n my lfe' a town of my chldhood dreams one used to read about n my school hstory when was a boy. What Amercan boy has not felt a thrll ol'prde.. as he has read the tale of the early struggles' of our patrotc forefathers at Lexngton and Concord! As we drove by Lexngton Green we turned to our rght leavng for the tme the road that leads to Concord and soon stopped at a street corner near the old Clark house. Here we got out and thoughtfully and reverently made our way to the front door and slently entered. Here we were n the very house n whch slept Samuel Adams and John Hancock at the very hour when Paul Revere started on hs mdnght rde to warn the nhabtants of vllage and farm that the Brtsh were comng.. All the older boys and grls know the famlar story of how the Amercan Revo-. luton began. And you know how t ended. t ended n gvng us a free country. Amerca s free and England too s free because Paul Revere Samuel Adams and John Hancock and men lke them loved freedom and were wllng to forsake ther own fresdes that other fresdes mght be safe. There are many nterestng relcs n that old house-the very same house n whch Adams> and Hancock were sleepng that nght sojlong ago. But there was one thng that strred my heart. more than au these. That Was a ple of glowng coals on the ancent\hearth. There was the same old freplace and the sam old hearth. and a. wood fre burnng as t dd. more than a hundred and ffty years ago.. t was not a. blazng cr.acklng fre but a steady glowng fre; and - could magrte Mr. Clark the good mnster sttng by that fre talkng n low.. and serous tones wth hs patrotc guests before senng them upstars to bed. He. was gvng :them shelter btlt also protecton; for. one. nlluedate objet;t. 'of the Brtsh 'solders was to capfure these nen. As the curou& crowd passed by movng hastly from room to roorf1 leaned over wth one elbow. on the mantel and wth head bowed gazed nto the fre. An open fre always has a story to tellany open fre. A wood fre tells the best stores and tells them n the most entertanng way. The story told by any wood fre has lght and shadow and movement and color. But a wood fre burnng low on an old old hearth has the most wonderful stores to tell. At ths hearthstone fathers and mothers for generatons have worked and Joped and loved. By ths fresde for two huddred years chldren have played and laughed and sometmes cred. Here famles have felt the fear of the savage and the dread of war and have knelt together to seek the protectng care of the Father above. What stores of spnnng wheels and of flntlocks of human tragedy and heavenly trust ths fre could tell us. was sorry could nof st down alone and undsturbed on that September day and lsten to ts story and read ts ancent tales n the glowng coals. The stores would not all have been. of war. An open wood fre tells of love and sngs of peace. could have dreamed there of my own boyhood home n the hlls and ts open wood fre and of the days of my youth. The days n whch our young people now lve are better than the old days. Amerca s a better place than t was n the days of John Hancock. Boys and grls of today have many blessngs that we dd not even dream about ffty years ago. But thnk t s not only a happy dea but a helpful practce and a hopefu( sgn that n our furnace-heated houes we provde one open fre where we can dream a bt and warm our hearts as well as our hands and heels. am glad the Clark home n Lexngton s stll preserved ad that coals stll burn n the -old freplace. May the altars of our hearts lke the fre that has been bumng through. the long years glow wth everlastng love; and may our. go od deeds kndle a kndly flame that shall warm other hearts untl peace shall fll the earth and happness rest down upon every home.. tfre.. shalbe:kept bu17nng:upthe alt cantltuallyttshall notg(jout/' :.. But. on the whole. commented to myself 'wonder what group can have fnanced hs. comng to Stockholm/' A few 'days later the lquor queston's turn; at the. conference came. Bshop Can non of the Methodst Church (n U.. s. A.) presented 'the subject. He made-a fne address quotng largely fr'om hs. 'panphlet whch mentoned last week. He urged the affrmatve prohbton vewpont on the confernce. He was folluwed by a Swedsh speaker who explaned the Swedsh lquor stuaton. Then the char announced a Scotchman Rght Honorable Lord Salveson as the next speaker; and when he got on the platform who should t be but my frend of the Drottnngholm excurson! He made the most reactonary speech delvered on the lquor ssue. All the old arguments common n ths country ffty years ago he trotted' out wth solemn emphass. There s no harm n drnkng wne or beer at dnner. No law can make t harmful by declarng t so. A law not backed by publc opnon s unenforceable. Amerca he sad.had tred to put a rel-. gous sancton- back of prohbton. t can. not be done. Bble passages one after another accept drnkng as a normal human pleasure. Chrst made wne at Cana. Lord Salveson asserted (erroneously) that some churches n Amerca had publshed a verson of the Bble omttng all references favorable to drnkng. He wondered f they were tryng to help the modernsts by attackng Chrst's d nty n declarng hm a snner because he drank wne. Why not also he -asked apply prohbton. to tea coffee tobacco theater and dances. You can not make people moral by law. Evdently he' went too far for the bulk of the delegates. He was followed by Rev. Henry Carter a leader of the temperance forces of the churches of Brtan who presented a closely' reasoned statstcal convncng ndctment of the Brtsh lquor trade. t s out of the queston even to outlne hs speech here. had heard the same thng when he had addressd grt temperance rally a. few weeks earher at Lncoln Eng.' n connecton wth the sessons of the Wesleyan Methodst General Conference. He attacked the economc founda;. tols of \he traffc when he asked what effect t would have on productve Brtsh ndustry f the bllon and a half of dollars ( only of course he ddn't say dollars) spent annually' on drnk could be ued to clothng furnture and food nstead. He also ponted?ut he daner. to world peace and: t1teatton1 go. wtlll!l the er steht' smugghng of prhlbltd_jquor nto dry terrtory lke the Unted States. -.tuy Dr. Garve a Scotchman lvng n Lon:.. don made a great mpreson on the conference when he warned the delegates that Lord Salveson dd not represent the feelng of all churchmen n Brtan. But he was especally movng' when n memorable words he chded people for stoppng at Cana on the way to Chrst and pleaded wth them to go on to Calvary. Too many want to vst Cana. Go on wth Chrst to Calvary and learn how to gve up lberty for love. Nevertheless the dfferences at the conference were so great respectng the wsest means of dealng wth the admtted evs of lquor that the fnal statement n the Message to the Churches s deplorably weak. n paragraph seven appears ths sentence: We consdered' next the moral and socal problems of overcrowdng unemployment laxty of morals drnk and ts evls} and the causes of crme. We can not be too well nformed as to the nature of true SabbatLsm as to why JehovaL made the Sabbath and as to ta mportance among the other precept of the Decalogue.
