BSHOP RESTARCK (Contaed from Page.) the Palama and Kalh dstrcts as her specal feld of work. A house was rented and n ths were started even ng classes, a sewng school, a Sunday School and evenng servces. buldng was outgrown and next year a larger one was rented. work grew so rapdly that t became necessary to secure larger premses. From the begnnng the cost of the support of St. Elzabeths has been borne by Mr. Wllam A. Procter of the Docese of Southern Oho. Last May Mr. Procter wrote statng that he would lke to purchase a pece of land on whch a new St. Elzabeths House could be bult. After mature consderaton and consultaton purchased a ste at a cost of $5. After further correspondence the Deaconess and were requested to have plans prepared. result s the buldngs whch have mentoned. ttle of ths property s vested uncondtonally wth the corporaton, " Protestant Epscopal Church n the Hawaan sland?," and represents an expendture for buldngs and furnture of $7,. Ths year Mr Procter wshes to provde means for the further extenson of the work. have wated untl the end of ths account to speak of the remarkable work of Deaconess Drant. Ths must be n a measure famlar to you. Deaconess Drant had n a wonderful degree enthusasm, wholesoule d devoton, and nspng and persstent effort. But the chef reason of her success was the love of her fellow human bengs as chldren of God. y loved her because she loved them, and there arose a remarkable esprt de corps n all who were connected wth St. Elzabeths House. Everyone felt that he or she had a. part and a lot n the work. t was a knd of home to a large number of parsons. t was a gref to me as well as to all others concerned that she was advsed by her physc an to gve up the work, "as she was unable longer to bear the stran. t was a cause of great thankfulness to me that the Rev. Mr. Potwne was on the ground and had a full" knowledge of the work, and an addtonal cause of thankfulness lay n the fact that Deaconess Sands could at once go to lve n St. Elzabeths House. So t s that the work has gone on as before and the ncrease of opportuntes s as marked as ever. Besdes the pad workers there are.twentyfv e volunteers who assst n the varous branches such as cookng schools, the sewng schools one for the Hawaans and one for Chnese, the club for Hawaan boys, the two grls frendly socetes one for Hawaan and one for Chnese, the evenng classes, the Sunday School, etc. CATHEDRAL ENLARGEMENT. Another sgn of progress for whch we are thankful s the fact that there s on hand as the product of the Easter offerng of 94 and other gfts the sum of nearly $, n cash and pledges for the enlargement of the Cathedral. Of the sum mentoned about $$ may be sad to be n the bank. Work wll be commenced at the earlest practcable moment. St. Clements has made excellent progress n the reducton of the debt on ts valuable property. At Waluku repars have been made on the parsonage n order to make t habtable at a cost of $7. whch, however, s not pad for. Land belongng to the church has been leased for thrty years and the house upon t has been are to be ntellgent Chrstans and churchmen they must be gven defnte, postve nstructon n Chrstan doctrne and concernng hstorc Chrstanty and ths natonal porton of the Holy Catholc Church. whole system as outlned n the ; baptsmal servce and Catechsm brngs reconstructed, the one who has the great responsbltes to the clergy that lease bearng nearly all of the expense there may be awakened n the souls of of $2. t s an nterestng fact that the chldren a sprtual concepton of n tearng down the nsde of the house what ther membershp n the Church pror to reparng t the tmbers were of God means. danger s, lest found to be marked: "G. B. W." se chldren should grow up wth mechancal deas of the church and sacra are the ntals of the Rev. Geo. B. Whpple, the brother of the late Bshop ments and worshp. of Mnnesota. Mr. Whpple was frst mechancal vew holds that baptsm s necessary but looks, upon t as Muke a tutor n the famly cf Captan at Ulupalakua e and later was ordaned and lved at Waluku, holdng lfe. t looks, later, upon confrmaton a functon rather than a sacrament of servces also at Ulupalakua n Capt. as a matter of formal necessty, when Makees chapel. t s further of nterest that Mr. and Mrs. Lufkn, who now often those who are confrmed seem the Catechsm s learned and then too lve n the house of whch we are to thnk they have graduated n relgon and they do not bother the clergy speakng, were both educated at Bshop Whpples schools at Farbault and are agan untl there s a chld to be baptzed, a marrage to be solemnzed or ntmate frends of Mrs. G. B. Whpple. A letter from ths lady mentons the bural offce to be read. that Capt. Makee had the church at Such relgon may be better than Waluku celed and panted at hs expense. blght upon the church for when one none, but t s an ncumbrance and mprovements member s weak all suffer. Only were also made n the parsonage teachng, tranng, at Kona, vstaton, exhortaton, prayer and there and at Kohala new organs were purchased. and treless pastoral care Another gratfyng can remedy the formal, note of progress mechancal dea of relgon s that St. Peters Chapel s entrely n ths connecton too spoke small for the congregatons at length and last year. wsh to the offerng on emphasze Easter day. agan whch was the necessty of nsstng that sponsorshp shall mean for the enlargement fund, amounted to $6, whch somethng more wth money now on hand than a complment makes gven $3 n and accepted. the fund. That sponsors ought to be, are expected by the church to be Chrstans n WORK OF THE LATY. Real progress realty and f possble has been made beleve durng church people. How can we expect th&t the year n the enlarged chldren can work of be brought up the laty n the church. n the church to "lead a godly and Chrstan lfe" and to be fathful "solders" of Chrst f the sponsors are not Chrstan people or perhaps ndfferent and neglectful Chrstans. Many of the chldren whom queston do not know who ther sponsors are. Every sponsor should be asked by the clergyman to read over the baptsm servce before actng n that capacty. And now as to confrmaton, the Brotherhood of St. Andrew wth ts staff of lay readers conducts servce tverv Sunday at the Queens Hosptal and frequently at St. Elzabeths, the Seamens nsttute, shps n port and elsewhere. Wth a traned band of laymen lcensed to make addresses much can be done n the future and plans for ths are n mnd. As to sprtual progress the deepenng and enrchng of sprtual lfe, one can make no report. God alone s the udge of ths. But n conversaton wth the clergy there are n many places evdences of a clearer recognton of dutes and prvleges. f the lves of the people are n a larger degree consecrated to God, then all other progress wll come. More communons were made than ever before some comng thrty or even forty mles to church on Easter Day. called attenton last year to the large number of baptsms n proporton to communcants n ths mssonary dstrct when compared wth most doceses on the manland. But when we count the number of baptzed n the last ten years and the. number of com, munkants as gven n reports we are brought face to face wth the fact that there s a fearful leakage. Ths should str the hearts of the clergy as to the paramount mportance of pastoral work. know that the leakage comes largely from the lack of relgous lfe n the home. re s then the greater necessty of pastoral care and dlgence. DUTY TO THE YOUNG. We must ever bear n mnd, that whch s so well known to you, as to what s the churchs system and deal. se baptzed chldren are members of the church. All teachng and tranng have for ther obect that the chldren may recognze and realze ther dutes ;s members of Chrst, and above all that n ther hearts there may be aroused an apprecaton of Chrst and Hs church and the Chrstan lfe. Our chldren are not taught, as some Chrstans teach, that at some tme n the future t s hoped they wll "on the church" as the phrase goes. y are taught that they are members. f they, Anglcan Communon orders that the one who s confrmed shall be "suffcently nstructed." Ths means a great deal more than beng able to say the Catechsm. heard a conversaton some tme ago not far from here. One person sad to the other, "Why was not A. confrmed she knew the catechsm?" answer was, "A. s not ready yet," "Oh, yes, she s," was the reply: " taught her the catechsm." presume f that grl had been confrmed she never would have gone nsde of a churrh agan for years and t s a mechancal dea.whch would attach much good to such a Perfunctory confrmaton. We hear a good deal n the papers and magaznes about the need of a revval. We do need a revval, not of relgous feelng but of relgous lfe. We need a revval of relgous lfe n the homes. We read of the utter lack of honesty and honor n so many ctes and States among legslators. We lead of dvorces and the lack of any sense of responsblty on the part of those who take solemn oblgatons. All ths has come wth the decay of relgon n the home and the best, and truest, the deepest revval that we could naugu rate would be to become earnest n ; a fathful ndance at the house? of Gd and the readng of the Holy Scrpture and prayer n the home. know the rush of lfe n ths age and the dffcultes n the way but the old queston s ths, "s the lfe," the sprtual lfe of ourselves and chldren, "s the lfe more than meat?" answer whch thousands of homes are gvng s that meat and rament ard wealth s more than the "lfe." t. s because of ths that we need a revval and a converson of heart. Ths hstorc church has a work to do here that s mmense mportance because those whom we touch and teach are many of them gong back to the Or ent. Let them not go back wth the dea that Chrstans are ndfferent and that most of them only go once or twce a year to the Heavenly Fathers House. Let them not go back wth the mpresson that many Chrstans socall worshp no God, and serve no God but gan. We hear much of the cryng need of cvc and poltcal rghteousness. Heretofore, n the revval of publc nterest n forestry n Hawa, the bulk of the argument for both conservaton of forests and reforestaton has been based upon the obect of protectng the water resources of the slands. A PRATE POTENTATE. From Srlded Welsh Kar to tbe Command of. Baeoueer Fleet Shp. f Twelve Mr. Frank K. Stockton, n hs "Buccaneers of Our Coast," n St. Ncholas, bays : Sometme n the frst half of the seventeenth century, on a secluded Welsh farm was born a lttle boy. Hs father was a farmer, and hs mother churned and there was no reason to magne that ths baby, born and reared n rural soltude, would become a rover of the seas and one of the most formdable prats that the world ever knew. Yet h nroved to be the case. TJe babys name was Henrv Morgan, and as he a dstaste for farmnggrewth hm. So strong was hs ds lke that when he became a young man he ran away to be a salor. He found a shp bound for the West ndes, and n J ths he started on hs lfes career. He had no money to pay hs passage, and( he therefore followed a usual custom of those days and sold hmself for a term of three years to an agent wao was tak mg a number of men to wort on tne plantatons. se men when enlsted were termed servants, and when they had been set ashore n the new world they were gent rally called slaves, and certanly treutt as such. When young Morgan reached the Barbardoes he was resold to a planter, and durng hs term of offce he probably worked a good deal harder, and was treated much more roughly, than any of the laborers on hs fathers farm. But as son as he was a free man he went to Jamaca, and there were few places where a young man could be more free and ndependent than ths lawless sland. Here were rollckng and blusterng "flbusters," and here the. young man determned to study pracy. He was not a salor and a hunter who by the force of crcumstances, gradually became 2 buccaneer, but he delberately selected hs professon, and mmedately set to work to acqure a knowledge of ts practce. re was a buccaneer shp about to sal from Jamaca, and on ths Morgan enlsted. He was a clever fellow, and very soon showed hmself to be a brave and ablesalor. After three or four voyages he acqured a reputaton for remarkable coolness, and showed unusual ablty to take advantage ol ravorabo crcumstances. se trats became the foun daton of hs success. He was also?ood busness man, and havng saved consderable money, he oned wth :ther buccaneers, and bought a shp, of whch he took command. shp soon made tself a scourge n the Spansh seas; no other buccaneerng vessel was so wdely known and so greatly feared. 3ut the Englsh people n those regons were as proud of the dashng young capt. Morgan as f he had been a regularly commssoned admral, on a law ful cruse. Before long he was recogae d as buccaneer n chef of the West ndes, and he very soon gathered to gether 2 shps and 7 men.
