Senthil Kumar, suffering from advanced stage of oral cancer, lives with his aged mother in Kodambakkam. He is has not been taking any treatment due to poverty. Pitying his condition, his neighbour took him to several govt. hospitals. According to him, Senthil was denied admission due to the terminal condition of his illness. He then approached S. NAGAR EDITION Vol. 16, No. 12 September 24-30, 2017 Missing Std.12 student found in Bengaluru Afreen Arun, a Std. 12 student, who went missing from her house in Pondy Bazaar on Sept. 8, was found in a church in Bengaluru on Sept. 15. A team from Mambalam Police Station and her family brought her to Chennai the next day. She had left for school at the usual time on Sept. 8 but did not return home after school hours. Her family was shocked when the school management informed it that the girl was absent. After lodging a police complaint, Afreen s parents also sought the help of the social media like Facebook and Whatsapp to find their daughter. Her father told Mambalam Times that it helped, as the social media message also reached the officials in the church where Afreen had taken refuge. They immediately contacted the local police station and the family members about Afreen s location and safety.. We will inquire into the reason for the girl s disappearance though at present it seems to be a family issue, said an investigating officer. Private banks open Aadhaar enrolment centers Karur Vysya Bank was the first bank in the private sector to open an Aadhaar enrolment center when it launched the facility last month in its Nungambakkam branch. Now, Lakshmi Vilas Bank has opened an Aadhaar enrolment center in its branch in 4, Abhiramapuram 4th Street, Alwarpet. It will open 53 more centers in branches in the country including the one in 29, Govindu Street, T. Nagar by the end of the month. The service of applying for new cards or updating existing cards will be available to all. Customers can complete the process within 10 minutes with the help of the certified enrolment agents. Businessman jumps into Adyar river, feared dead Reportedly depressed over his mounting debts, 50-yearold Mohan Kumar (a businessman and resident of Lotus Colony, Nandanam) jumped into Adyar River from Kotturpuram bridge at around 5 p.m on Sept.15. He is feared to have drowned but his body is yet to be recovered. According to eye witnesses, he paced the pavement adjoining the bridge for at least 15 minutes. He then handed over his mobile and wallet to a friend who was trying to calm him down, scaled the parapet wall and plunged into the water below. Taken aback, the friend cried for help and several passersby gathered. Someone alerted the fire and rescue services. The firemen employed two boats, one inflatable, in a search for Kumar but in vain. Police said Kumar was upset after creditors went to his home to ask him to repay them. The bridge is an infamous suicide spot, with at least 30 persons trying to kill themselves by leaping off it in the past five years. Chennai Corporation, in 2015, planned a 6-ft high wall along the bridge but the proposal is still pending. 4 Page 2 TAMIL CINEMA 75 - A LOOK BACK By RANDOR GUY TAMIL CINEMA AND MUSIC - 71 Years later, the life of Saint Thyagaraja was filmed again, this time in colour by the noted creative artist and serious filmmaker Bapu. J. V. Somayajulu, who had made a splash in Sankarabharanam played the title role, supported by the multi-lingual star K. R. Vijaya. In spite of them all, the film did not generate interest mainly because of the lasting impression the earlier version with Chittoor V. Nagaiah had created decades ago. As an established star and talented actor, Nagaiah was in demand to do character roles in several Tamil and Telugu Films. During the early 1950s, his old Vauhini friend K. Ramnoth made a film in Coimbatore, Ezhai Padum Paadu (1950) based on the famous French classic Victor Hugo s Les Miserables. Ramnoth cast Nagaiah in the lead role of Jean Val Jean and he made this role one of the most memorable in South Indian Cinema. His splendid performance contributed much to the success of the film, which is today considered a classic. Besides doing the lead role in it, Nagaiah also composed the music along with A. Rama Rao. Many songs in this film became popular and are remembered to this day. Mention must be made of some of them: Ennaasai papa (Nagaiah), Kanivudan unai kaanbeno (P.A. Periyanayaki), Vidhiyi! vilaivaal (Jayalakshmi). The last song was picturised by Ramnoth, the genius of cinema, on the Lux Soap Beauty Kumari N. Rajam in a single shot without a cut, the camera moving all the time through various locations. This is technically a feat even by today s standards and Ramnoth did it more than half century ago with primitive equipment. It is a matter of deep regret and shame that this brilliant movie wizard has been forgotten today. This film was also done in Telugu and later in Hindi. Not many are aware that the Tamil version was released on Deepawali Day, 1950 at Casino cinema, Madras which was till then screening only English movies. Another film Nagaiah acted in for his old friend Ramnoth was Viduthalai (1954) produced by the master filmmaker himself. In the adaptation of a play by the leading English writer John Galsworthy, named First and the Last, Nagaiah played the lead role of a smart and ambitious lawyer who sends his innocent brother to jail. Technically superb and well acted, the film failed the box-office, landing Ramnoth in mighty deep waters. Another interesting film Nagaiah produced and played the hero in was Bhagyalakshmi. It was his first production and was directed by P. Pullaiah in Telugu and released in Besides him the popular comedy pair of Tamil Cinema N. S. Krishnan - T. A. Mathuram appeared for the first time in a Telugu film. The film was a success and one song, a folk melody, Thinney meedha sinnoda! rendered by the noted actress and singer R. Balasaraswathi proved to be one of the most popular hits of early Telugu Cinema. BNR composed the music. Another hit of Nagaiah, a musical, was the Gemini Studios production, Chakradhari (1948). In the story of the Maharashtrian potter-saint Gora Kumbhar, he played the saint and the songs of the film proved a major attraction contributing to the success. Music was composed by the Gemini team, Rajeswara Rao and M. D. Parthasarathy. Some of the songs rendered by Nagaiah became very famous, like Unakkum enakkum enna, Kaakkai siraginile and Ninainthu urugum. Pushpavalli and her sister Suryaprabha played the hero s two wives. The latter-day superstar of Tamil Cinema, Gemini Ganesh, played a minor role as Lord Krishna. He was then on the staff of Gemini Studios, handling the Casting Department During his heyday, Nagaiah was a legendary figure. In his later years, however, he found himself facing severe financial difficulties and faced many hardships. He had to sell most of his assets and he found life harsh and hard. Because of advancing age the great actor had no option but to play even cowboy roles in third-rate curry western Telugu films. Nagar. It is blocking the carriageway causing hindrance to motorists. Corporation maps dengue locations in the city After the proliferation of dengue in the city, Chennai Corporation has taken steps to contain its spread. It has so far identified 179 localities as hot spots for the viral infection. Based on the reported cases, 179 neighbourhoods including K. K. Nagar and Kodambakkam have been identified and surveillance has been intensified in these areas. A door-to-door campaign is under way to remove the potential breeding grounds for Aedes mosquitoes that transmit the dengue virus. Residents have been advised to cover all water storage containers in a mosquito-proof manner and remove discarded items like tyres, tins, boxes and other articles that can contain water. At present, around 2,800 ground workers have been deployed to carry out fogging and breeding check in all the zones of the corporation. Nagar In a pilot project, Chennai Metrowater will soon install net enabled digital water meters in houses in T. Nagar, and consumers will have to pay as per readings in the meter instead of the flat rate being charged now. According to an official, the technology being used is much more advanced compared to the ones tried in Delhi and Mumbai. This will be completely hassle-free with zero human intervention, he said. He said that the Automated Meter Reading (AMR) meter, which will be net enabled, will automatically feed data directly to gateways, then to cloud and to the system without any human intervention. He said that water will be supplied 24x7 to houses fitted with AMRs. OBITUARY SHAKUNTHALA SUBRAMANYAN Shakunthala Subramanyan (resident of Subba Reddy Street, West Mambalam) passed away in her son s residence in Virugambakkam on Sept.18. She was 89, and had been a resident of Mambalam for 70 years. She was the daughter of M. R. Ganapathi Iyer (Gandhian and second signatory to the Memorandum of Association of Public Health Centre, West Mambalam). She was the wife of Late Vai. Subramanyan (a Tamil writer who had served as sub-editor of Dinamani Kadir under Savi). She had worked as a teacher in Sri Sarada Vidyalaya. She was a voracious reader of Tamil and English literature. She is survived by 3 sons, daughters-inlaw and grandchildren. Her eldest son S. Muralidharan was Treasurer of the Public Health Centre in the late 80 s and continued to be an active volunteer for 2 decades. Her eyes were donated.

Ramachandran When EPS1995 scheme was introduced, the Employees Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) kept the Gross PF Salary ceiling as Rs. 5,000 from to ; Rs. 6,500 from to and Rs.15,000 from onwards. 8.33% of the above amount was contributed by the employee to the pension fund. In the case of non-exempted trusts, both employee and employer contributed 8.33% each which was deposited with EPFO and, later, the employer s contribution was transferred to the employee provident fund maintained by EPFO and the balance transferred to employee provident fund maintained by the company. In the case of exempted trusts, the employer s contribution of 8.33% was deposited with EPFO and the employee s contribution was transferred to the provident fund maintained by the company. On superannuation, the amounts available in the EPF account with interest were paid to the employee by both EPFO (unregistered trusts) and employer s trust (exempted trusts). Pension was paid by EPFO to retired employees taking the ceiling amount as the pensionable salary. Following several writ petitions, the Supreme Court gave a verdict in 2015 that employees under the EPS1995 scheme are eligible for pension as per their actual gross salary at the time of retirement if they opt to deposit 8.33% of the difference between the ceiling amount and the actual gross salary along with interest. In the ruling, the court did not distinguish between exempted and non-exempted trusts. As per the Supreme Court order, the recalculated pension will have to be paid from the date of retirement. But the Central Provident Fund Organisation, in its circular dated , has incorrectly stated that the enhanced pension scheme is applicable only to unregistered trusts. There are a number of writ petitions demanding the withdrawal of the circular and sanction of enhanced pension to all employees registered under the EPF1995 scheme.
