Nagar & Mambalam Vol. 23, No th Issue : Convict who fled with another convict s gold held Manikandan, a history-sheeter, who was hiding in his relative s house in T. Nagar, was arrested on Dec. 17. He had gone absconding with the jewellery given to him by another convict Dashvath (22) for safe keeping. Dashvath had stolen the jewellery from his house after murdering his mother and had handed it over to Manikandan as he was on the run. Dashvath killed his mother for the jewellery while on bail for an earlier crime but was later arrested. Manikandan confessed to the police that he had sold the jewellery to pawnbrokers. Rs. 12,000 burgled from 2 shops in Ashok Nagar Burglars broke into two shops in 12 th Main Road, Ashok Nagar and took away Rs. 12,000 in cash and CCTV cameras from one of the shops on Dec. 18 night. They first broke into a medical shop on 12 th Main Road and burgled Rs. 8,000 cash and the CCTV cameras installed in the shop, and later Rs. 4,000 cash from a tailor shop on the same road. According to the police, the thieves also took away the computer in which the CCTV recordings were stored. Ashok Nagar Police are investigating the cases. Residential buildings demolished to make way for parking lots Several residential properties on streets adjoining Usman Road, T. Nagar have been demolished to make way for parking lots in the busiest shopping area in the city. While a few are maintained by big showrooms for customers, most are operated as paid parking lots. While some residents of the area said that this helps bring down haphazard parking on streets, others alleged that the parking lots violated development rules of the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA). About 20 parking lots have come up on 10 streets between the bus terminus and Duraisamy Road junction on Usman Road, most of them in the last two years. As several big showrooms in T. Nagar area do not have parking lots on their premises or have inadequate parking space, some have converted residential properties into parking lots after demolishing existing structures though they may be a little distance away. These parking lots sport the names of the showrooms. Private parking lots mostly accommodate two-wheelers on an hourly basis. However, T. Nagar Residents Welfare Association alleged that such facilities operating in residential zones for commercial purposes violate laws. Though it claimed that the land use map of CMDA clearly classifies a majority of the streets in T. Nagar as residential zones where commercial activities cannot be permitted, a CMDA official clarified that reclassification of zone is not required for utilising premises in a residential zone for commercial parking lots. Steep hike in fee for late registration of births, deaths The Tamilnadu Health Department has hiked the fee for late registration of births and deaths. The fee for registration after one year has been increased to Rs. 500 from Rs. 10, while the fee for registration between 30 days and one year has been raised to Rs. 200 from Rs. 5. For registration after 21 days, the fee is Rs The fee for seeking records with regard to births and deaths registration has also been revised to Rs.100 for every year required. FREE

Those interested in supporting the ongoing project of Jaimaa Trust or wish to offer voluntary service may contact Bike thief held during routine check Ajith Kumar of Reddy Kuppam, who had stolen a parked bike from Pondy Bazaar, was arrested during a routine check at Teynampet junction on Anna Salai. During the check, policemen found that his identity did not match with that in the vehicle s registration papers found on the bike. When he gave devious answers, he was taken in for questioning. He confessed that he had stolen the bike parked on the roadside in Pondy Bazaar. Police later recovered eight stolen bikes from him. MAMBALAM TIMES Page 3 Amnesty scheme for unauthorised constructions extended by 3 months Tamilnadu Govt. has extended the amnesty scheme by three months to owners of illegal constructions built before July 1, A gazette notification will be issued soon, said an official. He said that violators have preferred to stay away rather than apply for regularisation of their unauthorised constructions. He said that only 35 persons have applied under the scheme wherein the developer or builder or house owner has to pay multiple infrastructure and amenities charges as penalty, before regularising of the buildings. He said that the scheme, facing legal hurdles over its validity, is now sub-judice, and the court order is awaited. However, applications are being accepted, he added.

When I went to collect the card, I was told to come in the first week of next month. There is still no mobile connectivity in the underground section between Thirumangalam and Nehru Park, which was inaugurated in May. Chennai Metro Rail Limited had assured mobile connectivity within 3 months of launch, but it is still not available. As per recent media reports, CMRL has installed signal boosters which are being tested. Today, mobile is the best medium of contact in case of emergency, and CMRL should take immediate steps to implement it in the underground section without further delay. Vijayaraghavan, Ashok Nagar Shoddy Metrowater work at Alagirisamy Salai / Lakshmanasamy Salai junction The rear right wheel of a truck overloaded with construction material got stuck in an improperly filled trench dug by workers of Metrowater Dept. in Alagirisamy Salai, near its junction with Lakshmanasamy Salai at around 11 a.m on Dec. 21. As the truck could not be moved, a crane had to be engaged to pull the wheel free from the trench. A couple of days back, a MTC bus also suffered the same fate at the spot. Vehicle movement was hampered for close to four hours as the junction was closed to traffic. The trench, which was dug to undertake repair work to an underground pipeline, was not closed properly after the work was completed. Nagar) Page 5 Reprieve for Airtel The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has allowed Bharti Airtel to conduct ekyc verification for its telecom subscribers till Jan. 10 with stiff riders but maintained its suspension order on Airtel Payments Bank. Airtel, India s largest telecom company with 282 million subscribers, got the temporary reprieve with conditions after Rs. 138 crore Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) was repaid into lakh original accounts of its customers, sources said. The second interim order to this effect has been passed by UIDAI keeping in view convenience of customers and also the March 31 deadline given by the Supreme Court for mobile SIM re-verification. The authority will take a view on the issue after it receives a report from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the Telecom Department on Jan. 10. UIDAI had earlier prohibited Bharti Airtel and the Airtel Payments Bank from conducting ekyc e-verification for existing and new customers. This followed allegations that the telecom major had surreptitiously on-boarded customers to its bank while carrying out their Aadhaar verification. The issue of unauthorised linkage came to the fore when the government s social-sector subsidy linked to LPG cooking gas landed in the Airtel Payments bank accounts of many customers. The customers cried foul and said that they had not even signed up for Airtel Payments Bank account. LED conversion of streetlights in T. Nagar Chennai Corporation will replace 1,780 sodium vapour streetlights in T. Nagar (under Zone 10) with LED lights by the end of this month. According to an official, so far LED lights have been fitted to 4553 streetlights and the remaining 1780 will be completed by the month end. He said that LED lights consume less power, last longer and are environmentally safer. In the next phase, their functioning will be automated. The lights will be centrally monitored from Ripon Buildings. Any non-working lights will generate alerts and faults will be detected automatically, he said.
