Crowds throng Deepa s house A month after former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa s death, groups of AIADMK loyalists continue to throng the house of her niece Deepa Jayakumar on Sivagnanam Street, T. Nagar, urging her to float a political party. There is no slogan shouting or waving of flags, but the crowd that gathers everyday before the house, waits eagerly to catch a glimpse of Deepa, who by now is known for her routine but brief speeches from the balcony overlooking the street. The compound wall of the house prominently displays her father s name (J. Jayakumar) on the left and her grandmother s on the right (Sandhya Illam; Sandhya is the mother of Jayalalithaa). The abandoned building next to Deepa s house is covered with hoardings and posters with images showing her with Jayalalithaa. This is also causing lot of difficulties to nearby residents. The traffic police have restricted entry for motorists from Venkatanarayana Road to Sivagnanam Street. This picture was taken on Jan. 17. DMK resorts to rail roko in Mambalam Station FREE The rail roko protest against the ban on Jallikattu called by the DMK at around a.m on Jan. 20 turned violent after a large number of party workers broke barricades to enter Mambalam Station. The situation worsened after senior party leader M. K. Stalin and a number of party workers squatted on the track thereby stopping the movement of trains. The protest went on for an hour before policemen could take control of the situation and clear the tracks.

4 Page 4 MAMBALAM TIMES: Ashok Nagar - K.K.Nagar Edition January 22-28, 2017 TAMIL CINEMA 75 - A LOOK BACK By RANDOR GUY Tamil Cinema Music 37 Sambur Vadakarai Subbaiah Bhagavathar was a famed stage and later film star of the 1930s. He was a well-trained and talented Classical Carnatic musician and was a noted gramophone (then known as plates ) singer, and many of his song-discs were hits. His most famous song was Jaya Jaya Gokula Baala. In any play, irrespective of its period, characters, scene or content, he would enter the stage singing this song like a signature tune. In Valli Thirumanam, he played Muruga and he would enter the stage singing Jaya Jaya Gokula Baala. And he did the same even when he was playing Lord Rama! And people cheered him wildly even as the first line was heard. Once, in a play, he was Lord Krishna and he came on stage in an expensive white silk suit with a flaming red tie and gold tie-pin singing Jaya Jaya Gokula Baala!. When questioned about the dress, he is said to have asked, How do you know that Krishna never dressed this way? (Such incongruences were quite common in those days. In a famous hit play Bhoo Kailas in Kannada, performed all over South India by the noted S. S. S (Sri Saraswathi Sahitya) Natya Mandali, Mysore, Ravana (acted by the legendary Kannada stage and screen star of yesteryears, M. V. Subbaiah Naidu) would sing the Thyagaraja composition Rama Nee Samaanamevaru! which was in praise of his arch-enemy Lord Rama! Indeed a friendly, kindly Ravana!) Cinema began to talk and sing in Tamil in 1931 with the forgotten South Indian film pioneer H. M. Reddi s Kalidas. Curiously, in this film, the heroine T. P. Rajalakshmi spoke and sang in Tamil while the hero Narasimha Rao did so in Telugu. Some other characters spoke in Hindi! Even though it was the folk myth tale of the immortal savant of Sanskrit, poet and playwright Kaviratna Kalidas, the hero sang a composition of Saint Thyagaraja Swamigal who lived in the 18-19th century! With classical Carnatic musicians being cast in the lead or other major roles, producers and directors thought it fit to make use of the artistes singing talents and fame to draw the crowds. The grammar of cinema was then virtually unknown and, not surprisingly, early Tamil films were mostly filmed plays or canned theater. Plays were shot by camera in as is where is condition and no attempt was made to invest a film with the elements of cinema. Screenplay-writing was not known in the early years. The accent was on songs and dialogues, and the camera remained static in most scenes. Even the music, just as the dialogues, was recorded on the spot in sets while the camera was rolling. There were no technical facilities to record the music before the shooting in a recording theater as is being done now witnessed the release of a major box-office hit Bhama Vijayam, the familiar mythological tale of Lord Krishna and his two wives, Rukmini and Sathyabhama. It was produced by a successful Coimbatore-based company, Chellam Talkies, at a cost of less than a lakh rupees and it grossed a stunningly incredible 10 lakhs! Directed by the Hollywood-trained Manik Lal Tandon, it had M. R. Krishnamurthy as Krishna and the famous Palayamkottah Sisters, P. S. Ratna Bai-P. S. Saraswathi Bai as Rukmini and Sathyabhama. ( M. R. Krishnamurthy, a singing star of yesteryears, was the younger brother of the legendary Carnatic musician, Maharajapuram Viswanatha Iyer.) As Sage Narada was introduced a new face, a handsome educated young man of good family background destined to create history and become a living legend in the world of Carnatic Music. His name was G. N.Balasubramaniam, later immortalized under his famous initials GNB. M. L. Tandon and the producer A. N. Maruthachalam Chettiar decided to make full use of GNB s musical talents and skills. The film had as many as fifty-nine songs! GNB sang eight of them solo and two more along with others. (To be continued) Tourism mart to be held in May The Tamil Nadu Tourism Department will conduct the longpending tourism mart on May 20, 21 and 22, a statement from the department said. The Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation will be the nodal agency for the function. The department said that an expression of interest will be sought from event management agencies. The mart was scheduled to be held in December 2015 but had to be cancelled due to the floods. An app to explore Tamilnadu The Tamilnadu Tourism Department has joined hands with the promoters of smart phone app Pinakin to supply information regarding places of tourist interest in the state. The Pinakin app is available for free download on both Android and iphones. The information on tourist destinations is available in both Tamil and English. SADANAND TERRACED HEALTH Ever since my son Devanand dragged me 5 floors up to uncoop my old bones from the cloistered first floor flat, the sun-drenched terrace is the best spot in my little kingdom, where I see nothing above me except some aeroplanes flying past. I feel on top of the world, a mini Himalaya. For this exercise, I have shifted from evening to morning as there is less chance of atmospheric pollution so early in the day. The good old blood would welcome unpolluted fresh air which the terrace, during early mornings, is awash with. The criss-cross drill from its inaugural 15 minutes has now reached a half-hour stint. The morning air fills the lungs with oxygen of the purest kind and enters my heart straight. Oh God, I have wasted 83 years without pure oxygen, breathing cabined and confined fake air! What you don t know does not hurt, but now that I know that Nature s gift was always at my command, I feel like shouting You fool, it was there always, all that you had to do was to have faith in Nature. Now I have. As for sunlight, I give the Sun God chap, perhaps the most munificent of the one billion plus Gods who distribute their goods to the occupants of this beautiful globe, a 100% marks. Once the soul is at peace through Sun s munificence, my heart goes out even to the carrot-haired Trump. The whole Universe is the manifestation of love and its opposite is merely playacting. My crick in the back is gone, cured by good thoughts and bolstered by free flowing oxygenised blood leading to freedom from all mundane cravings. For purity of thoughts I didn t have to listen to talks in temples. I never go there as I know that God is within oneself and that my son who persuaded me to ascend what was near was right. Now I may not challenge Usain Bolt but I can manage my own gas. With my son, the terrace and determination, I will celebrate my century on Be there for the feast!! After the first two days, the stock started to deplete fast and the outlet rationed the sale to one dhoti per person and on subsequent days sold only at fixed time. The metro water supplied through pipe is blackish in colour and the water has red coloured worms. Due to shortage in the reservoirs, water is supplied only on alternate days. Off late, the water is not only blackish but has a lot of mud. Every 3 to 4 days, I have to spend money to get the pipe connecting the sump in my house with Metrowater line cleaned as it gets blocked with the mud thereby affecting the flow. The Corporation workers themselves acknowledge it and said that the main line needs to be flushed and cleaned to mitigate the problem. 8 Page 8 MAMBALAM TIMES: Ashok Nagar - K.K.Nagar Edition January 22-28, 2017 Use BHIM instead of cash for commercial transactions Prime Minister Modi launched on Jan. 1 BHIM (Bharat Interface for Money), a simple Android-based App, for making payments from the buyer s bank account to the seller s bank account through the medium of just their cell phones, and without the use of credit or debit cards. BHIM can be downloaded free from Android Play Store. For using BHIM, both the buyer and the seller must have registered their phone numbers for mobile banking in their respective bank accounts. The buyer should create a 4-digit code known only to himself for effecting financial transactions through this App. For completing a transaction, the buyer must open the BHIM App in his cell phone, enter his secret 4-digit code, enter the cell phone number of the seller, enter the amount to be paid and then press Pay. The amount will instantly be transferred from the buyer s bank account to that of the seller, and both will receive SMSs in confirmation at once. Unlike some other applications such as PayTM, this App does not transfer money from the bank to the buyer s wallet (meaning purse ) for subsequent payment to the seller, but transfers money directly from the buyer s bank account to the seller s. The App can be used for transferring up to Rs. 10,000 in a single transaction and up to Rs. 20,000 per day. Until further instructions, there will be no user charge by the banks for these transactions. Since the transaction can be initiated only by entering the secret code number, anyone who steals the phone cannot gain access to the owner s bank account. Shortly, provision will be made in the App for the use of the owner s thumb impression associated with his Aadhar number, instead of the 4-digit secret code, for initiating the transaction, making it fool-proof against misuse by third persons. Fire in building under construction Fire broke out in an 8-storey building under construction on Chamiers Road, Nandanam on Jan. 13. The fire, which broke out at 6.30 a.m in a godown on the ground floor, damaged the material stored there. Five fire tenders from T. Nagar, Saidapet and Mylapore rushed to the spot and put out the fire after battling for nearly two hours. A short-circuit is suspected to have caused the fire.
