NAGAR EDITION 83-year-old woman outsmarts burglar Quick thinking saved the day for 83-year-old Lakshmi (a resident of Jai Krishnan Apartments, Jubilee Road, T. Nagar), as she thwarted an attempted robbery in her house at around 4 a.m on March 12. According to Mambalam police, Lakshmi was sleeping when a man managed to gain entry into the house at around 4 a.m. He woke her up, threatened her at knifepoint and demanded all the jewellery in the house. When Lakshmi said she did not possess any valuables, the burglar told her to hand over her gold chain and bangles. Lakshmi then asked the man to wait outside her bedroom so she could remove her ornaments and hand them over to him. After the burglar exited the bedroom, Lakshmi shut the door and raised the alarm. Hearing her scream, neighbours rushed to the scene. The burglar panicked and fled. Lakshmi lodged a complaint in Mambalam Police Station. FREE

The 3.3km. underground line between Saidapet and AG-DMS is expected to open by April. It needs manpower for mechanized housekeeping and manual cleaning, ticket vending, platform management, customer care and parking management services in all its underground stations that are getting ready to open. It includes four stations between Saidapet and AG-DMS which are expected to open along with Central Metro and Egmore Metro this year. The underground stations require efficient air-conditioning, cleaning and ventilation and will need professional agencies experienced in handling such operations. 3 Appeal to join Nathella Depositors Welfare Association Nathella Jewellery closed its business and shut down its branches four months back without repaying its deposit and chit fund holders. In spite of assurances given by Prappanna Kumar (Managing Director), depositors have not been repaid till date. For unified action, some depositors have joined hands and formed Nathella Depositors Welfare Association and registered it on Jan. 5. Nagar Edition LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Yeoman service by veteran neighbourhood doctor Sir, I am a regular reader of Mambalam Times which provides useful information about the happenings in T. Nagar and West Mambalam. I want to give my respects, thanks and expres appreciation for 92-year-old Dr. M. K. Srinivasan, MBBS, FRCS, FCGP (a resident of Moosa Street, T. Nagar). I am among the thousands of his satisfied patients. He is the Honorary President and Medical Director of Public Health Centre (West Mambalam), which was founded by Rajaji in 1953, and has been doing great service in the field of health care, especially for the poor and underprivileged. I was told that he has performed more than 5000 surgeries, most of them free, while serving in Govt. Royappetah Hospital in his earlier days. Dr. Srinivasan with his motto as Service before Self is a great motivator and pathsetter for other doctors. He has received several awards. Nagar Ph: Damaged EB cable in Srinivasa Street unsafe for pedestrians Sir, 2 feet portion of an underground EB cable is lying exposed on the road margin in Srinivasa Street, opposite Sri Sathyanarayana Temple, West Mambalam. Its outer insulation is damaged and the individual cables are lying exposed. Being close to the road margin, vehicle tyres are running over it which could further damage the insulation and the individual live cables, thereby posing danger of electrocution to passersby, especially pedestrians. Being invisible at night, pedestrians are also in danger of tripping and falling while stepping on the cable. I request TNEB officials to take immediate action to repair the insulation of the cable and bury it below the surface. V R Sridhar, Flat 4, Swathi Kanaka Flats, 23/11, Veerasami Street, West Mambalam, EB boxes not maintained properly, a safety hazard Sir, In most areas in the neighbourhood, EB has laid underground cables to supply power. It uses a network of junction boxes to interconnect the underground cables and supply power to houses in the street. Most of these junction boxes are not maintained properly. It is common to see doors damaged or missing, and the whole box and the connectors in rusted condition. These illmaintained junction boxes are a cause for concern as there is danger of electrocution or fire due to short circuit. Many a time the underground cables get exposed due to some digging work carried out by some civic department. These junction boxes also serve as billboards for advertisers. The papers stuck on the junction boxes can cause a major fire. EB should take steps to penalize these advertisers. I also suggest that all junction boxes be painted red and the word Danger marked prominently on both the front and rear sides to caution passers-by, especially children. All metal junction boxes should be removed and replaced with the modern plastic based ones. Srinivas, Ph: Subsidy amount not mentioned in LPG bill Sir, Recently, the Central Govt. increased LPG subsidy from 216 to 228. But the bill issued this time by the LPG delivery staff does not display the subsidy amount. My repeated requests to mention the subsidy amount in the bill has fallen on deaf ears. The SMS I received from my bank stated that Rs has been credited to my account instead of Rs The dealer has no answer why a lower subsidy has been credited as it is directly handled by the company. They should set right the anomaly and mention the subsidy amount in the bill so that it matches the figure announced by the govt. N. Vijayaraghsvan 18th Avenue Ashok Nagar. Ph: Court s direction to mill roads before relaying welcome Sir, K. Bala Chandar (a resident of Chitlapakkam, Chromepet) recently filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking to restrain the Town Panchayat from re-laying the road without milling, to avoid increase in road level. After hearing the PIL, the Chief Justice directed the Executive Officer of Chitlapa-kkam Town Panchayat to relay the road without increasing its height. The advocate for petitioner has stated that the order is not specific to Chitlapakkam and is general and applies to City Corporation and the rest of Tamilnadu. This order is timely, as it has been the practice of the Chennai Corporation to re-lay roads without milling, with the result the level of road goes on increasing every time the road is re-laid. The plight of the residents living in apartments built years ago is miserable because of the elevated road level. During rainy season, the rain water from the road flows into the residential complexes, causing inundation. We request the residents to be vigilant and ensure that the contractor does cold milling while relaying roads in their area. T. Nagar Residents Welfare Assocation, 30, Rangan Street, T. Nagar Post blocks carriageway in 4 th Sector, K. K. Nagar Sir, A private organisation has erected a 20-ft tall post in 4 th Sector, K. K. Nagar next to EB junction boxes and is blocking the carriageway. It could have easily been located further down the road, and without obstruction. The company is not taking any initiative to relocate the post in spite of several reminders. While digging a pit to erect the post, the workers damaged an underground telephone cable thereby disrupting services to 15 residents. K. Ganesan 4th Sector, K. K. Nagar, Ph: Shop diverting waste into storm water drain Sir, There is a big store that sells vegetables and fruits in 33/ 34, Motilal Street, T. Nagar. It is open from 6 a.m to 7 p.m on all days. Its staff wash the shop floor and divert the waste, rubbish and water into storm water drain in front of the shop. This activity will certainly block the flow in the drain and cause innumerable problems to the residents of the street. I appeal to the Chennai Corporation to take immediate action by carrying out an inspection and prevent the shop owner dumping waste and dirty water in the storm water drain. V. S. Narayanaswamy, Motilal Street, T. Nagar Post office staff respond positively to complaint Sir, I thank Mambalam Times for publishing my letter regarding the deficiency of service I in T. Nagar Post Office on International Women s Day when I went to encash my NSS certificates and open a SB account. It had effect, as when I went again to collect the cheque book, the staff were more cordial, accommodative and displayed a customer-friendly attitude. Some even apologized for their callous behavior the other day. I was told that a special meeting was held in the post office after the letter was published to discuss the matter and a circular was issued to improve customer service. I thank the higher officials in T. Nagar Post Office for their immediate action and also the staff for responding to it positively. H. Nagesh, Shri Krishna Apartments, 40, 8th Avenue, Ashok Nagar LPG subsidy should be linked to only one account Sir, As requested, consumers had linked their Aadhaar number with their savings bank account to avail of LPG subsidy. Later, Aadhaar was made mandatory for all bank accounts of a person, as many have more than one account, and in different banks. This has now led to confusion. If a consumer has 3 or 4 accounts in different banks, he does not know to which account the subsidy is credited. It is credited to different accounts at different times. So it is difficult to verify or check the credit. One has to go to the gas agency after a week to know about it. If the subsidy is credited to the account that the consumer has opted for, such difficulty can be obviated. When I approached my gas agency and a senior officer at IOC, they said that it is done by the software and they have no control or say in the affair. It had immediate effect, as the internet service provider took action at once to relocate the pole. The residents had been haggling with him for over a month, but he did not take any action. Bharathan (resident of 19/38, Postal Colony 2 nd Street, West Mambalam) passed away on March 9. He was 63, and had been resident of West Mambalam since birth. He had retired as sub-inspector from Tamilnadu Police. He had served in T. Nagar, Kodambakkam, Anna Nagar, Choolaimedu and Abiramapuram police stations. He was a specialist in bomb detection and disposal. He had received the CM medal for meritorious service and a State award in rifle shooting. Bharathan was also a social worker and supported a number of orphanages and old age homes. He is survived by his wife Rajeswari (Ph: ) and daughters Sujatha and Harini.

5 High Court mandates NCERT syllabus for CBSE schools Madras High Court has passed an order mandating CBSE schools to only follow NCERT prescribed subjects and not to include additional subjects in the curriculum. The order was passed by Justice Kirubakaran after hearing a petition filed by advocate M. Purushothaman. According to the petitioner, the NCERT syllabus prescribed only three subjects for Std. 1 under CBSE mother tongue, English and Mathematics. But in reality, the students are forced to study eight subjects, including computer science, general knowledge and Hindi. This apart, though NCERT has specifically stated that schools should not give homework to Stds. 1 and 2 students, this rule is flouted and loads of homework are given daily to the children. When the plea came up for hearing, the CBSE submitted that it would ensure strict compliance of such NCERT circulars. The board told the Court that it had no financial assistance to implement the Acts enacted by the Central and State governments. The judge then directed the Asst. Solicitor General to get instructions from the Central Government and inform the court by March 27. Nagar Edition Infant falls to death from terrace In a tragic incident, a 2-month-old infant died after accidentally falling from his mother s arms from the terrace of a 20- ft building in Thukkaram Street, T. Nagar on March 13. Maheshwari (a housewife) told the police that she was hanging washed clothes to dry when she lost hold of her 2-month old son Muthuraj, whom she had carried with her to the secondfloor terrace of their rented house. According to the police, the child sustained grievous injuries in the fall and was rushed for treatment to Rajiv Gandhi Govt. General Hospital. The doctors operated upon the child, but he died after 14 hours. An inconsolable Maheshwari told the police that Muthuraj suddenly kicked against her without and slipped out of her hands and fell off the terrace. Her husband Kannan had gone for work at the time. Nagar Corporation officials evicted pavement vendors from G. N. Chetty Road, Thyagaraya Road and nearby roads in T. Nagar on March 11. The temporary structures erected by the vendors were also pulled down and taken away. Mambalam police provided protection for the workers and officials engaged in the eviction. CMRL starts trial runs between Little Mount and Saidapet Chennai Metro Rail Limited on March 12 began regular trial runs on the 4-km. stretch of Anna Salai between Little Mount and Saidapet on which commercial operation is expected to start in April after a delay of nearly two years. According to CMRL officials, the first run went without a hitch. The coach began its maiden test run from the elevated section near Little Mount station and entered the tunnel 18 metres underground through a ramp built across the Adyar River to reach Saidapet station and another 3.3 km. of underground tunnel to reach AG-DMS metro station. The AG-DMS- Saidapet stretch is part of the corridor that connects Washermenpet with the airport. The stretch has four underground stations - Saidapet, Nandanam, Teynampet and AG-DMS. Officials said they expect to inaugurate the Little Mount to Saidapet stretch along with the Central Metro- Nehru Park line on April 14.
