Ganesha idol making contest for children by Sanjeevini Peetam Sanjeevini Peetam (5/1, Kavarai Street, West Mambalam) will conduct an ecofriendly Lord Ganesha idol making competition for students in the age group of 7 to 11 on Sunday, Sept. 8 from 3 p.m to 4 p.m in its premises. The idols, which can be a maximum of 6 inches in height, should be made at the venue using dough made with maida. No colours are allowed. Govindaraj (a resident of Ramapuram) has been making and selling clay Vinayagar idols outside Sri Kasi Viswanathar Temple (Easwaran Koil Street, West Mambalam) for more than 35 years. He told Mambalam Times that he hails from a family of potters. He said that he also works as a technician in W. S. Industry Limited (Porur). Govindaraj said that the price of an idol varies from Rs. 30 to Rs. 100 depending on its size. He said that a full time job as a potter is not remunerative and he makes and sells idols only during festival time. He said that he might be the last in his generation of potters as his children are not interested in learning the skill even as a hobby.
